The reliable way to stop earbuds hurting or falling out is to fit each ear separately: start with the supplied tips (often the medium pair), insert and rotate the earbuds as the manufacturer shows, then change size until you have a secure, pain-free seal. Use a model-specific fit test when available, and consider wings, hooks or stability bands only if your earbuds support them. Apple, Bose, JBL and soundcore all emphasize adjustment rather than forcing an earbud deeper into the ear; their instructions are model-specific, so begin with the guide for your exact product.
What a good earbud fit feels like
A well-fitted earbud should remain stable when you turn your head, talk or walk, without creating a painful pressure point. The tip should sit in the entrance of the ear canal rather than being pushed in as far as possible. You should be able to remove it with a gentle pull, and the housing should not press sharply against the outer ear.

Fit is personal. The shape and size of your left ear can differ from your right, so the same tip size is not automatically correct for both. Apple and soundcore explicitly allow different sizes on the two sides where the product supports that choice. Treat each ear as a separate fitting job.

JBL’s in-ear guide explains that a poor seal can make music sound thin, reduce bass and perceived loudness, and let more outside sound through. A comfortable fit is therefore both a retention issue and a sound-quality issue.

Fit your earbuds in this order
Use the following sequence before buying replacement tips or accessories. It works with the supplied parts and keeps the number of variables small.
- Identify the sides. Check the left (L) and right (R) markings and put each earbud in the matching ear. The acoustic angle and any wing or hook are designed for that side.
- Read the model’s wearing instructions. Look for the manufacturer’s specified angle, twist or seating motion. Different housings lock in differently; copying the motion for another model can make your fit worse.
- Start with the recommended supplied size. If the instructions nominate a starting point, it is commonly the medium tip. Apple tells AirPods Pro users to begin with the medium tips, while JBL advises trying the supplied alternatives and rotating the tip to find a seal. Insert gently rather than forcing the nozzle inward.
- Adjust the position before changing parts. Try the instructed angle or a small clockwise or counter-clockwise twist. A few millimetres of rotation can change where the silicone contacts the ear without changing tip size.
- Test movement. Turn your head, speak, walk and open your jaw. The earbud should stay seated without a painful pressure spot. If it loosens or falls out, continue to the size check instead of pushing it deeper.
- Change one ear-tip size at a time. Try the next supplied size in the ear that feels wrong. Test left and right independently; a mixed-size pair can be correct when your ears need it and the model allows it.
- Run the manufacturer’s fit check if your model has one. Follow the exact app or device prompts, then refit and repeat if the result is poor. A fit check is a product feature, not a universal standard, and its availability depends on the model and required software.
- Add a retention part only when the model supports it. If size and placement still fail, check whether your earbuds accept a wing, hook or stability band made for that exact model. Do not stretch an incompatible accessory over the housing.
Choose the right ear-tip size
Signs the tip may be too large
On the Bose models covered by its wearing guidance, a tip that creates pressure or a “squished” feeling can be too large. Try the next smaller supplied tip and repeat the movement test. This is a model-specific cue, not a rule that applies identically to every earbud.
Signs the tip may be too small
Looseness, a tip that loses its seal when you move, or an earbud that repeatedly falls out can indicate insufficient contact. Bose lists looseness and falling out during head movement as reasons to try another size. A larger tip may help, but first make sure the earbud is rotated and seated according to its instructions.
When the “right” size differs by ear
Do not reject a comfortable combination simply because the boxes are labelled as a matching pair. If the left ear seals with a medium and the right needs a small or large, use that combination when the manufacturer’s design permits it. Apple and soundcore both describe selecting sizes independently for each ear.
Do not use depth as a substitute for fit
Pushing a tip farther into the canal can increase pressure and make removal harder without improving stability. The manufacturer material reviewed here provides product-fitting guidance, not medical advice or a universal depth standard. Stop adjusting if the fit causes pain.

Why the seal changes sound and noise blocking
The silicone tip forms a seal at the ear-canal entrance. When that seal is incomplete, low frequencies can leak away, so bass and overall loudness may seem reduced. Outside sound also enters more easily, which can make noise reduction less effective. JBL describes these effects in its In-Ear Fit & Comfort Guide.
A seal that is too tight is not automatically better. Excess pressure can make you remove the earbuds quickly, and the resulting constant readjustment can be less stable than a slightly looser but comfortable fit. Judge the combination of comfort, retention and sound rather than chasing the strongest possible pressure.

After changing tips, listen to a familiar track at a moderate volume and compare speech or environmental awareness. This is a practical check, not a measurement of noise reduction. If your model provides an in-app seal test, use that test instead of assuming that louder bass proves a correct fit.
Use built-in fit and seal tests correctly
Apple AirPods Pro
Apple documents the Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation). On supported devices, open the AirPods settings while they are connected and follow the Ear Tip Fit Test prompts. Apple also documents an Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3 with the software required by that generation. Because the test name and requirements differ by generation, follow the instructions for your exact AirPods model in Apple’s ear-tip guide.
soundcore models
soundcore describes fit tests for supported products, including its Liberty Buds 2 guidance. The menu and test behavior are product-specific; use the soundcore app or the instructions supplied with your model rather than assuming every soundcore earbud has the same test. The relevant fitting steps are documented in the Liberty Buds 2 support article.

What a failed result means
A failed fit result tells you to change the placement or tip size for that ear. It does not prove that a different brand or a universal accessory will work. Refit one side, run the check again, and keep the size that combines a passing result with comfortable pressure.
Retention designs: tips, wings, hooks and bands
Plain silicone tips rely mainly on the canal seal. Other earbuds add a contact point in the outer ear:
- Ear wings or fins press gently into a fold of the outer ear to resist rotation and movement.
- Ear hooks loop around the ear and can provide extra support for active use, but they add bulk and must match the left/right shape.
- Stability bands fit around the earbud housing and use the outer ear for retention without replacing the main tip.
These parts are design-dependent. Bose’s guidance for supported QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) says a different eartip or stability band may be needed for each ear, while soundcore’s Sport X20 instructions describe wearing a model with an integrated retention design. Read the exact instructions for your model before buying or fitting one; a part that fits the nozzle may still interfere with charging, microphones or the case.
“You may need to try a different size eartip or stability band for each ear.”

Compare earbuds by the features that affect fit
When comfort and retention are your buying priorities, compare the physical and software features below rather than relying on a generic “one size fits all” claim. The sources document these as features of particular products, not as proof that one design is universally best.
| Fit factor | Questions to ask before buying | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Retention design | Is it a plain in-ear tip, or does it include a wing, hook or stability band? | Extra contact with the outer ear can help when a plain tip rotates or slips, but it adds parts that must fit your ear and case. |
| Included tip range | How many sizes are supplied, and can each ear use a different size? | More supplied sizes give you more chances to find a seal without immediately buying accessories. |
| Fit-test support | Does the exact model offer an Ear Tip Fit Test, Acoustic Seal Test or app-based check? | A guided check can reveal a poor seal, but test names, supported generations and software requirements differ. |
| Replacement availability | Are tips, wings or bands sold for the exact model and nozzle shape? | Compatibility is specific; a physically similar accessory may not seat correctly or fit in the charging case. |
| Wearing motion | Does the guide call for a twist, angle or hook-over-ear placement? | The correct motion can improve stability without increasing tip pressure. |
Troubleshoot “my earbuds keep falling out”
They fall out as soon as you move
- Confirm that each earbud is in the matching ear.
- Repeat the model’s specified twist or seating motion.
- Try the next supplied tip size in the affected ear only.
- If the model offers a fit test, run it after the change.
- Check for a compatible wing, hook or stability band before purchasing a third-party part.
The Avantree support wording “earbuds keep falling out” describes this common problem, but accessories discussed for its Aura Loop are product-specific. Do not assume that an Earfin or similar part fits another model.
They feel painful or create pressure
Remove the earbud and try a smaller supplied tip or a less aggressive seating angle. Check whether a wing, hook or band is pressing on the outer ear. Do not continue wearing an earbud that causes pain, and do not force it deeper. The manufacturer guidance available for this topic does not establish a medical diagnosis; persistent ear pain or other symptoms require advice from a qualified clinician.
The fit feels secure but the sound is thin
Recheck the seal on that ear. A slightly different rotation or a larger supplied tip may close the gap. Confirm that the tip is fully attached to the nozzle and that the earbud is not sitting at an angle that leaves part of the canal open. JBL specifically links poor sealing with reduced bass, loudness and unwanted-sound blocking.
One side passes while the other fails
Refit the failing side independently and allow different tip sizes. Ear asymmetry is normal, and Apple and soundcore both describe per-ear selection. Do not enlarge both sides just because one ear needs a larger tip.

Remove any aftermarket wing, hook or band and check whether the original tip seats fully in the charging case. A retention accessory must be compatible with both the earbud and its case; if it prevents the charging contacts from engaging, it is the wrong part for that model. Try every supplied tip first. If none works, search for Choose wings, hooks or stability bands only when the manufacturer lists that part for your model. An accessory can improve retention while making the fit less comfortable, blocking a sensor or preventing the case from closing. Replacement availability is therefore a model feature to check before purchase, not a guarantee that generic tips will work. Use this checklist whenever you change tips, share a pair between listeners or begin using a new model: The Tool Desk A correct fit is secure and comfortable, not merely tight. Stop experimenting when an earbud repeatedly causes pain, leaves a persistent pressure point, or cannot stay in place despite the supplied sizes and the model’s instructed placement. At that stage, the earbud’s shape or retention design may simply be a poor match for your ears. Select a model with a different housing, a wider range of supplied tips, or a compatible wing, hook or stability band rather than forcing the current one.
