If the photo is no longer in a bin, look for a copy in OneDrive, Samsung Cloud, Smart Switch, or another device. A backup can restore only pictures it already contained; if every bin is empty and no copy exists, Samsung and Google do not promise a way to recover the file.
Restore a photo from Samsung Gallery
- Open Gallery.
- Tap Menu, then Recycle bin. Depending on your Galaxy model and One UI version, the label or location may differ.
- Select the photo or photos and tap Restore.
Samsung says deleted Gallery items remain in the Recycle bin for 30 days before automatic permanent deletion. This retention period is stated in Samsung Canada’s support article, updated June 18, 2026. Samsung’s Recycle bin guidance

Check My Files separately
My Files has its own Recycle bin, so check it even if Gallery’s bin is empty.

- Tap Recycle bin.
- Select the deleted file and choose Restore.
Samsung also describes a Storage management view that can display deleted items by app. Availability and labels can vary by device and software version. Samsung’s Recycle bin guidance

Look in Google Photos Trash
- Open Google Photos and confirm you are signed in to the Google account that backed up the pictures.
- Open Trash.
- If the photo is there, select it and tap Restore.
Google’s current help page says deleted photos and videos remain in Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion. Samsung UK’s guide, updated June 20, 2026, says 60 days, so the published guidance conflicts. Check the Trash in the correct account for the item and its current availability rather than relying on a universal retention promise. Google Photos Help · Samsung UK guidance
Check OneDrive for an existing copy
If you used Samsung Gallery–OneDrive synchronization, open the OneDrive app and check Photos for a copy that had already synced. Samsung says Gallery–OneDrive synchronization ended September 30, 2026; previously synchronized files remain in OneDrive. You can also check OneDrive’s own Recycle bin for deleted cloud files. Samsung says OneDrive Camera Backup can still save future photos, but do not look for a setting to restart the discontinued Gallery sync. Restore from a Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch backup
These options help only if a backup made before deletion contains the missing pictures.
Samsung Cloud
On supported devices, go to Settings > Samsung account > Samsung Cloud > Restore data. Choose a suitable backup and check its contents before restoring. The available categories and menu labels may vary.

Smart Switch
If you backed up the phone to a PC or Mac, or to supported external storage, use Smart Switch to restore that backup and select the photo category if offered. Samsung documents restoring from a computer or supported USB OTG storage; verify that your phone supports the storage connection. Neither method recreates a photo that was never included in a backup. - Messaging-app conversations and their media folders
- Downloads, Pictures, and Videos in My Files
- Other cloud accounts or devices where you may have saved the image
- A computer or external storage used for transferring or backing up photos
Samsung says native recovery is no longer possible in the cases it describes when more than 30 days have passed or the recycle bins have been emptied.
