This process is written for Manager Career in EA SPORTS FC 26. Menus, filters and player data can change between editions and squad updates, so treat every rating, value and potential figure as a snapshot of your save.

Start with the right edition and squad update
A player described as a bargain in one Career Mode database may be expensive, older or already transferred in another. Before scouting, load the current squad data:

- Open Settings.
- Choose Edit Teams.
- Select Download Updates.
- Start or continue the save only after the download has completed.
EA’s Career Mode guidance prompts players to download squad updates for the latest transfers and player ratings. A useful shortlist therefore needs three labels: the game edition, the squad-update date and the save’s financial context. A club with Champions League income can call a player “cheap” when a newly promoted side cannot. Transfer budgets, wage budgets, board expectations, existing contracts and the player’s intended role all change the calculation.

If you are reading an old list, separate its current overall, potential, market value and age before trusting it. Those fields are in-game data, not permanent characteristics.
What “cheap wonderkid” should mean in your save
“Wonderkid” is community shorthand, not a guarantee built into the transfer system. For a limited-budget club, a useful target usually combines:
- An age that leaves several development seasons.
- A potential rating materially above the player’s current overall.
- A fee and wage that fit your actual budgets, not just the displayed market value.
- A position and role your tactic can use.
- A credible route to minutes through starts, substitutions, cup matches or a loan.
A low market value is only the first filter. A player with a short contract can have a lower fee but demand a signing bonus or higher wage. A release clause can make the final cost predictable, while a long contract may make the selling club reject an offer far above the displayed value. A prospect who never plays can be a worse investment than a slightly older player who immediately fills a weak position.

1. Open the Global Transfer Network
Use the Global Transfer Network rather than searching every available player without a brief. Scouting instructions turn a huge database into a manageable report. The exact labels vary by edition, but the current interface includes filters for position, age, contract length, overall condition, PlayStyle and Player Role.
Begin with one footballing need. Examples include a ball-playing centre-back, a box-to-box midfielder, an inverted winger or a goalkeeper who can start next season. A broad instruction such as “any position, any age, any quality” creates noise and makes it harder to compare reports.
2. Set an age and quality range
For a development signing, set a young age band rather than selecting “all ages.” You can widen it later if the report is empty. Set the quality brief high enough to avoid players who cannot contribute, but not so high that the search returns only established stars. A sensible sequence is:
- Choose the position or role your squad lacks.
- Set a young age range appropriate to your rebuild timeline.
- Ask for a quality level that could earn minutes in your current team.
- Add a contract-length filter when you need a lower transfer fee.
- Use PlayStyle filters only when a particular trait is central to your tactic.
Do not stack so many restrictions that the scout returns nothing. If the list is too short, remove the least important filter first—usually a specific PlayStyle—rather than abandoning the position or age requirement.
3. Hire scouts for information, not prestige
Career Mode allows up to six scouts under the current interface guidance. Scout Experience affects the size of the returned selection, while Judgment affects the quality of the players identified. A club with limited funds should prioritize the combination that produces useful reports for its chosen market instead of automatically filling every slot.
Assign one scout to the immediate senior need and another to a different region or role only when you can process both reports. More names are not automatically better; an unreviewed list does not improve recruitment.
Turn a scout report into a transfer decision
1. Shortlist before negotiating
Initial scouting results are leads, not purchase approvals. Add credible targets to the Transfer Hub and keep a shortlist larger than the number of players you expect to sign. Three to eight candidates for one position is usually easier to compare than an entire league.
Group the shortlist by role: immediate starter, rotation option and long-term project. This prevents a high-potential teenager from being compared directly with a ready-made starter on the wrong criteria.
2. Request the full report
A completed report can reveal the player’s overall rating, market value, weekly wage, release clause and expected transfer fee. It may also expose contract conditions that change the negotiation. Wait for that information before making a serious offer.

Record the values in a simple table or note. The displayed market value is an estimate, while the expected fee is closer to the amount the selling club may accept. Neither figure includes the player’s wage, signing bonus or possible add-ons. A target can therefore be “cheap” in transfer-fee terms but unaffordable over several seasons.
3. Compare the total squad fit
Check the following questions for every shortlisted player:
- Can the player perform the role your formation actually uses?
- Are the relevant attributes strong enough for current matches?
- Will the player receive enough minutes to justify the wage and fee?
- Does the contract situation make negotiation realistic?
- Would a loan, rotation role or immediate start be the honest squad promise?
- Does signing the player block an academy graduate or another position that needs investment?
When two players have similar potential, choose the one with the clearer pathway to playing time and the lower recurring wage. Cash saved on the fee cannot compensate for a salary that prevents you from filling another weakness.

4. Approach to buy or loan only after scouting
The Transfer Hub lets you approach a club to buy or loan a player. Use a purchase when the player is ready for a defined role and the total cost fits the season’s plan. Use a loan when you need to test a player’s fit, lack the cash for a permanent fee or cannot promise regular starts yet.
Keep a reserve in both budgets. A negotiation that consumes every available coin can leave no room for wages, emergency cover or a late opportunity. If the selling club’s demand is far above the expected fee, move to the next candidate instead of treating the first name as irreplaceable.
How to compare senior targets at a glance

Use current overall and potential as separate columns. A high potential with a very low current overall may require a loan or several seasons of managed minutes; a player already near your starting level can contribute while developing.
Run Youth Academy scouting in parallel
The Youth Academy is the lower-transfer-fee pipeline. You pay for scouting and wages after promotion, but you do not negotiate a normal transfer fee for an academy graduate. It is slower and less predictable than buying a senior player, so treat it as a second pipeline rather than a replacement for immediate recruitment.

EA recommends sending scouts to regions that fit the club’s style. A technical possession team might prioritize regions where the reports are likely to produce technically suitable profiles; a physically demanding side can choose a different brief. The important point is to align the assignment with the positions and attributes you can develop.
Set academy instructions
Choose a position or player type instead of asking for every kind of prospect. Current academy scouting instructions can run for three, six or nine months. A shorter assignment gives faster feedback; a longer one can produce a broader pool but ties up the scout for longer.
When reports arrive, inspect current overall, potential, attributes and positions. In FC 26, EA says scouts consider potential in both senior and youth talent reports. That makes the potential field useful for prioritization, but it is still a forecast rather than a promise of a specific final overall.
Promote gradually
Do not promote every interesting teenager immediately. Keep a prospect in the academy while you assess whether the position is real, the potential range remains attractive and the first-team pathway exists. Promotion is sensible when:
- The player has a position your squad can use.
- The current overall is close enough to earn occasional minutes.
- The squad has a development plan rather than a crowded depth chart.
- You can protect the player from being overused or left unused.
EA’s guidance recommends gradual promotion and giving academy graduates minutes. A player who is not ready for senior football may benefit from staying in the academy longer or moving on loan after promotion.

Judge potential against current readiness
Potential answers “how high might this player develop?” It does not answer “can this player help me now?” Use a two-axis decision:

Inspect attributes for the chosen role rather than relying on the overall number alone. A full-back may need pace and defensive awareness; a central midfielder may need passing, stamina and reactions; a striker may need finishing, movement and composure. The best profile is the one whose strengths match your instructions and whose weaknesses your tactic can cover.
Use loans as a development and budget tool
Loans solve two problems at once: they avoid an immediate permanent fee and can provide regular match time to a player who would sit on your bench. Before accepting or arranging a loan, identify the player’s likely minutes and role. A loan that produces little football is not automatically better than keeping the player for controlled substitute appearances.
For a small club, a loan can also fill a position while cash is reserved for a permanent target. For a larger club, loaning out an academy graduate can prevent a development stall caused by a crowded squad. Review the player when the loan ends rather than assuming that a season away guarantees a particular rating.
Check free agents at the start of each season
EA recommends checking free agents at the beginning of each season for low-cost depth. This can uncover a useful backup without a transfer fee, but free-agent status says nothing by itself about age, potential or tactical suitability.
Apply the same checks as with a transfer target:
- Current overall and role-specific attributes.
- Weekly wage and any signing demands.
- Age and likely usefulness across the contract term.
- Position fit and available minutes.
- Whether the signing blocks a better academy option.
A free agent can be excellent emergency cover even when the player is not a wonderkid. Treat that as a squad-building win, not evidence of high potential.
Give prospects a development plan that can work
Development depends on use, not just recruitment. EA’s FC 26 Pitch Notes state that match experience and form are crucial to the speed of youth development. Substitutions in Youth Tournaments can provide match experience and form, while the broader Career Mode guidance recommends loans for prospects who need regular playing time.

- Monitor form before increasing responsibility.
- Move the player on loan when your squad cannot provide a realistic run of games.
- Reassess the position and role after the season rather than chasing a number alone.
Do not promise that any one training method, loan or match total guarantees maximum potential. Development speed can vary with the player’s experience, form and opportunities.

A practical low-budget workflow
Before the window opens
- Download the latest squad update.
- List the positions that need an immediate starter, rotation player or project.
- Set a maximum fee and maximum weekly wage for each need.
- Reserve a portion of the budget for wages and late-window opportunities.
During the first scouting cycle
- Give the Global Transfer Network a narrow position, age and quality brief.
- Review the returned selection and discard players who fail the role or budget test.
- Add the strongest candidates to the Transfer Hub.
- Request full reports and record fee, wage, clause and contract information.
- Rank candidates by readiness, upside, total cost and minutes pathway.
Alongside senior scouting
- Send a Youth Academy scout to a region and role that match the club.
- Run the assignment for three, six or nine months according to how quickly you need information.
- Keep academy players until their position, potential and pathway are clear.
- Check free agents at the season start and identify loan destinations for blocked prospects.
At negotiation time
- Make an offer only after the full report is complete.
- Compare the club’s demand with your pre-set fee limit.
- Check the wage request against the existing squad structure.
- Walk away when the player’s role, cost or minutes plan no longer makes sense.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Trusting an undated wonderkid list
Symptom: The player is missing, has a different rating or costs far more than the article claims.

Fix: Check the edition and squad-update date, then verify the player inside your save. Ratings, transfers, values and potentials can change.
Sorting by potential alone
Symptom: You sign a teenager who never reaches the pitch.
Fix: Compare current overall, role attributes, squad depth and a specific minutes plan before making the offer.

Confusing market value with total cost

Fix: Use the full report and evaluate fee, weekly wage, clause, bonuses and contract conditions together.
Giving scouts an impossible brief
Symptom: Reports return almost nobody.
Fix: Remove one restriction at a time, usually a PlayStyle or narrow quality threshold, while keeping the essential position and age criteria.
Buying more prospects than you can develop
Symptom: Several high-potential players receive no meaningful minutes.

Assuming a loan guarantees growth
Symptom: A player returns with less progress than expected.
Fix: Choose a destination and role that can provide football, then monitor form and reassess after the season.

Loans and free agents support both routes; they are budget tactics, not substitutes for a clear scouting brief. A balanced rebuild often uses a senior signing for the weakest position, an academy pipeline for future depth and loans for players who need minutes.

What to verify when using external player databases
Third-party databases can help you filter by age, position, rating, potential, value, wage, club, league and nationality. Use them to generate names quickly, not as a replacement for in-game scouting. Verify every promising entry against the current edition and squad update because the database may use different data, an older update or different assumptions about potential.
The game’s full report remains the authority for your save’s expected fee, wage and contract conditions. External lists should shorten discovery time; they should not decide the transfer.
Final checklist before signing
- Is the game edition and squad update current?
- Does the player solve a defined position or role need?
- Have you separated current overall from potential?
- Is the full report complete?
- Can you afford the fee, wage and contract demands together?
- Will the player receive realistic minutes or a suitable loan?
- Does the signing leave room for academy graduates and other squad needs?
- Would your club still want the player if the potential forecast does not fully materialize?
If the answer to those questions is yes, the player is a sensible value target for your save—even if the community never labels them a wonderkid.
