To see the security patch already installed, open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Android version. Read the line labeled Android security update. That screen also lists the Android version, Google Play system update, and build number as separate entries.
To look for a newer release, open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the prompts. Menu names vary by manufacturer, model, Android version, and carrier. Before installing, connect to Wi‑Fi and charge the phone to at least 75%.

What the Android security patch date tells you
The date labeled Android security update is the phone’s reported security-patch level. It is not the same thing as the Android version, the Google Play system update, or the build number. Google lists all four details separately on the Android version screen, so record the exact label when checking support status or reporting a problem.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Entry | What it identifies | Where to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Android security update | The security patch date currently shown by the phone | Settings > About phone/About tablet > Android version |
| Android version | The main Android operating-system release installed | Same Android version screen |
| Google Play system update | A separate Google Play system component and its displayed date | Same Android version screen, or a separate System and updates area on some phones |
| Build number | The software build identifier used to distinguish the installed release | Same Android version screen |
Do not use the Google Play system date as a substitute for the Android security-update date. If someone asks which security patch your phone has, quote the value beside Android security update, along with the phone model and Android version when those details matter.

Find the security patch already installed
- Open Settings. Use the gear icon in the app list or notification shade.
- Open About phone. Tablets normally use About tablet. The wording can differ slightly on customized Android interfaces.
- Tap Android version. This opens the software-information page.
- Read Android security update. Write down the complete date exactly as displayed.
- Record other identifiers if needed. Note Android version, Google Play system update, build number, manufacturer, and model. Keeping these together prevents confusion between two phones that have different software even when they run the same Android version.
If you cannot find Android version immediately, use the Settings search field for “Android version,” “security update,” or “software information.” Search results still depend on the manufacturer’s labels, so confirm that the page contains the separate Android security-update entry rather than only a general device-information page.
Another location on some Android phones
Devices that provide a Security and privacy section may place update controls under System and updates. That area can expose separate entries for Security update and Google Play system update. These are two different update categories; open the security entry when you need the Android security-patch status.
Check for and install a newer update
- Prepare the phone. Connect it to a reliable Wi‑Fi network and charge it to at least 75%. Updates can be large and may take time.
- Return to Settings. From the main Settings page, open System.
- Tap Software updates. The phone checks whether an update is available. On some devices, the equivalent control has a manufacturer-specific name or appears under a different system menu.
- Read the result. If an update is offered, review its version or patch information and the available storage requirement shown on the phone.
- Start the installation. Follow the on-screen download and installation prompts. Keep the phone connected to power if the device requests it, and do not intentionally switch it off during installation.
- Allow the required restart. Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet activate a downloaded Android update after the next restart. Many other Android devices restart automatically during installation. Wait until the lock screen or normal home screen returns.
- Check the result. Reopen Settings > About phone/About tablet > Android version and verify the displayed Android security-update date, Android version, and build number.
A notification is not required to begin this process. A manual check through System > Software updates is the normal way to look for an update after dismissing or missing a notification.

When the menu names do not match
Android manufacturers customize Settings, and carriers can control when software is released. Treat Google’s general route as a starting point rather than a promise that every phone uses identical labels.
| What you see | What to try | Why the wording may differ |
|---|---|---|
| About phone | Try About tablet, Device information, or search Settings for “Android version” | Phones and tablets, manufacturers, and software editions use different labels |
| No System menu | Search Settings for “software update,” “system update,” or “update” | The manufacturer may move update controls into another top-level category |
| Security and privacy | Open System and updates, then choose Security update for the patch date | Some interfaces separate Android security and Google Play system controls |
| Update notification but no visible download button | Open the notification, or run a manual check under the phone’s update menu | The notification may hand off to a vendor-specific updater |
If Settings search does not reveal an update control, use the manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model. Do not assume that a path documented for another brand, region, or Android edition applies to your phone.
What it means when no update appears
The phone reports that it is up to date
This means the update service is not offering a newer package to that device at the time of the check. It does not establish a universal release date for every Android phone. Rollouts depend on the device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier, so two phones running the same Android version can receive a patch at different times.

Check the model name and carrier before contacting support. The manufacturer or carrier is the appropriate source for an exact rollout status for that combination. Pixel owners can also consult Google’s Pixel update information for Pixel-specific timing.

Restart the phone if the update screen suggests it, then run the manual check again. Google’s help guidance notes that an interrupted download may retry automatically over the next few days. Keep Wi‑Fi stable and maintain the recommended charge level when the device retries.
The update is offered but installation fails
- Return to the update page and read the exact error message before trying again.
- Reconnect to Wi‑Fi and ensure the battery is at least 75%.
- Restart the phone, then check for the update again.
- If the same error returns, record the model, Android version, Android security-update date, build number, and carrier. Give those details to the manufacturer or carrier support team instead of installing a package intended for a different model.
The available evidence does not support treating every failed installation as a security problem. A failed download, a staged rollout, and an unsupported device require different remedies.

The phone is older
Older devices cannot always run newer Android versions. A missing major Android release may therefore be a support limitation rather than a broken updater. Check support for the exact model and carrier before assuming that the newest Android version should be installable. The security-patch date and the Android-version number can stop advancing at different times, so assess each entry separately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why patch dates are not the same on every phone
There is no single Android-wide calendar that guarantees a particular patch date for every model. Timing varies by device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier. Carrier testing, regional distribution, and model support can all affect when an update is offered, but the exact schedule for a non-Pixel phone must come from its manufacturer or carrier.
For a useful status report, include the following details:
Best Value
- Manufacturer and exact model name or model number
- Mobile carrier, if the phone is carrier-supplied
- Country or region, when support asks for it
- Android version
- Android security-update date
- Google Play system-update date
- Build number
- Whether Settings currently offers an update
This information distinguishes “the rollout has not reached this device” from “the phone is not eligible” and from “the updater encountered an error.”
How to verify that an update really installed
- Wait for the installation to finish and for the phone to restart, whether that restart is automatic or initiated by you.
- Open Settings > About phone/About tablet > Android version.
- Compare the displayed Android security update date with the date shown before installation.
- Check the Android version and build number for the newly installed values.
- Look separately at Google Play system update; it may show a different date because it is not the Android security patch.
- If the date did not change, open System > Software updates again and read the status message. Capture the exact message before contacting support.
Do not judge success solely by a notification disappearing. The Android version page is the authoritative place on the phone to confirm the displayed patch date and related software identifiers.
Quick Recap
Safe habits during an update
- Use Wi‑Fi before downloading, as recommended in Google’s Android update guidance.
- Charge to at least 75% before starting installation.
- Allow enough time for a large download and restart sequence.
- Do not confuse the Google Play system date with the Android security-update date.
- Keep the exact model and carrier information available when asking why a patch has not arrived.
- Use only the update offered through the phone’s own Settings or instructions from the device maker; do not apply a package meant for another model.
