Start with the Indian service that owns or catalogs the record, then verify the underlying document with its responsible university, publisher, patent office or data-producing agency. Use Shodhganga for deposited theses, ShodhGangotri for research synopses, and Shodh-Chakra for broad scholarly discovery. For patents, search through IP India’s links to InPASS and WIPO PATENTSCOPE, then check the official status record and e-register. For government data, search data.gov.in and confirm the publisher, definitions, dates, files and license in the agency’s documentation.
A search result is a lead, not proof. Discovery services can surface a candidate record; only the responsible authority can establish what was published, deposited, granted, updated, licensed or legally in force.

These routes are complementary rather than interchangeable. A thesis repository is not a journal index, a patent search result is not a legal opinion, and a government-hosted file is not automatically complete or suitable for every analysis.

Discovery is not verification
Discovery answers “where might the record be?” Verification answers “what exactly is this record, who is responsible for it, which version is current, and what can I safely claim?” Keep those questions separate in your notes.

- Discovery evidence: a search-result title, snippet, index entry or aggregator record.
- Verification evidence: the publisher’s article page, a university’s deposited thesis record and document, the patent office’s register and notices, or the dataset owner’s documentation and file.
- Claim limits: do not infer peer review from a PDF in a repository, grant from a patent application, enforceability from a status label, or data quality from a government domain.
For every item, save the stable identifier, the date you checked it, the record URL or catalog location, and the version you actually used. This makes your citation auditable when a portal changes its interface or metadata.
Find and verify papers and theses
Use Shodhganga for completed Indian theses
Shodhganga is INFLIBNET’s open-access digital repository for electronic theses and dissertations submitted at Indian universities. It is built on DSpace and uses recognized interoperability standards, allowing records to be searched and harvested across systems. Search by title, scholar, university, subject or distinctive terms, then open the repository record and the deposited document. Do not rely on the snippet returned by a search engine.
- Enter a distinctive phrase from the research question, then broaden with synonyms if the first search is too narrow.
- Filter or inspect the result for the scholar, university, subject and submission year.
- Open the full repository record and note its permanent handle or other stable identifier.
- Download the deposited document and compare its title page with the metadata.
- Record the document’s version, access date and any restrictions before quoting or analyzing it.
Do not mistake ShodhGangotri for a completed study
ShodhGangotri contains approved research synopses and related proposals or outputs described by INFLIBNET. A synopsis describes planned or ongoing work; it is not a completed thesis or a peer-reviewed paper. Some synopses may later be mapped to full-text theses in Shodhganga. If you find only a synopsis, label it as such and search separately for a later thesis or publication.

INFLIBNET describes Shodh-Chakra as a research-lifecycle portal with a single search box spanning major metadata fields and resources such as Shodhganga, Google Scholar, IRINS and Crossref. It is useful when you do not yet know the repository or publication venue. Treat every hit as a candidate: follow it to the original journal, conference, repository or DOI landing page before citing the work.
Verify a journal or conference paper
Compare the candidate record with the responsible publisher or conference page. Check all of the following as one identity test:

- Exact title, including subtitle and punctuation where it affects meaning.
- Every author, in the published order.
- Journal or conference name, volume, issue, pages or article number.
- Publication date and, where shown, online-first date.
- DOI or another stable identifier.
- Version and document type.
A preprint, accepted manuscript and version of record are different publication states. A repository copy may be legitimate while still differing from the final article in pagination, corrections, figures or licensing. Cite the version you consulted and state when a repository manuscript is not the version of record. The presence of a PDF does not prove peer review or formal publication.
Verify a thesis record and identity
Match the Shodhganga metadata against the document’s title page. Confirm the scholar’s name, university, supervisor, degree, submission or award date and any stated department. If an identity or award detail conflicts, check the university’s own repository or contact the institution. The repository demonstrates that a document was deposited; it does not independently certify every factual claim, result or credential in the work.
Assess whether the paper answers your question
After identity is confirmed, evaluate scope rather than treating a match as automatically relevant. Read the abstract, methods, sample or data description, study period, geographic coverage and limitations. Record whether the item is empirical research, a review, a protocol, a thesis chapter or a proposal. This prevents a thematically similar synopsis or commentary from being presented as evidence for a result it did not test.
Find and verify Indian patents
Start with the official search gateways
IP India’s Public Search page links to InPASS and WIPO PATENTSCOPE. Use keywords, inventor or applicant names, classifications, application numbers and publication numbers. Search spelling variants, transliterations, acronyms and relevant synonyms; a single wording can miss records that describe the same technology differently.
- Write down the technical concept, likely synonyms, inventor names and any known number.
- Run a broad keyword search, then narrow it with classification, applicant or inventor fields.
- Open each promising record and capture the application number, publication number, filing date, applicant, inventors and title.
- Check related family members or earlier and later publications where the system exposes them.
- Move from the search result to the official record, file history and status services before making a legal or commercial statement.
Distinguish application, publication and grant
Report exactly what the record represents: an application, a published application, a granted patent, or a lapsed or expired record. An application number identifies a filing; publication means the application was made public; grant means a patent was issued. None of these labels alone tells you whether rights are currently enforceable.

Check status in the patent register and file history
IP India’s e-services directory includes a patent status service, patent e-register and utilities covering expired patents, disposed applications, First Examination Reports, section 146 working information and status by field of invention. Use the specific application number to inspect the latest entry, notices and relevant dates. Save a copy or citation of the record you relied on and the date checked, because status can change.

It also says the information should not be used for legal purposes. Treat dashboard results as orientation, then rely on the official file and seek qualified Indian patent counsel for a legal decision about ownership, expiry, infringement or enforceability.
State territorial limits
Patent rights are territorial. An Indian filing or grant does not itself establish protection in another country. If your question concerns foreign rights, inspect the relevant national registers or international family records separately and identify which jurisdiction each status describes.
Write a defensible patent citation
Include the title, inventors, applicant or recorded assignee, application or publication number, filing and publication or grant dates when available, the status label, and the date you checked the register. Say “published application” rather than “patent” when that is what the record shows. If ownership or status is disputed or the dashboard is incomplete, describe the uncertainty instead of converting a search result into a definitive claim.
Find and verify Indian government datasets
Search data.gov.in, then identify the owner
data.gov.in is India’s Open Government Data Platform, designed, developed and hosted by the National Informatics Centre under MeitY. The portal states that content is owned by the relevant ministry, state, department or organization and is licensed under the Government Open Data License – India. The individual record still controls: check which agency published that dataset and which license applies to that particular file.

- Search by subject, geography, indicator, department and time period.
- Open the dataset record and record its catalog ID, publisher, description, update date and reference period.
- Read the documentation before downloading: definitions, units, collection method, geographic boundaries and known limitations.
- Download the actual file and compare its columns, row counts, dates and units with the metadata.
- Save the file name, checksum or other local version marker, access date and license terms.
- Check for revisions, archived releases, missing values and breaks in series before calculating trends.
Follow the producing agency for authoritative definitions
For Indian government data outside the portal, identify the statistical or administrative agency responsible for the subject. Its publication, registry, documentation or release is the authority for definitions and revisions. A portal entry can point you to a file, but the agency’s methodology explains what each field means and how the observation was collected.
Use the MoSPI compendium as a map, not a current dataset
MoSPI’s 2024 Compendium of Datasets and Registries in India catalogs datasets and administrative records. Its description of intellectual-property records points to the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks and identifies annual reports and the Official Journal as dissemination formats. Because the compendium is a dated catalog, follow its referenced agency to the current publication, registry or journal before using the information.
Record the metadata an analysis depends on
Before analysis, capture:
- Producing organization and contact or documentation page.
- Release date, update date and reference period.
- Geographic coverage and unit of observation.
- Definitions, classifications, collection method and sampling or administrative process.
- File format, schema, code lists and missing-value conventions.
- Revision history, breaks in series and known quality warnings.
- License and any attribution or reuse conditions.
A government host provides useful provenance, but it does not guarantee that a dataset is current, complete, error-free or fit for your question. Test the file against the documentation and explain material gaps in your methods.

- Identify the object. Decide whether you have a paper, thesis, patent application or grant, or dataset. The object determines the correct authority.
- Capture a stable identifier. Save a DOI or repository handle for scholarship, an application or publication number for patents, and a dataset record or agency catalog ID for data.
- Confirm the responsible owner. Use the publisher or university for scholarship, the patent office and recorded applicant or assignee for patent documents, and the producing agency for data.
- Check dates and versions. Separate publication from deposit, filing from publication and grant, and dataset reference period from update date.
- Inspect the underlying record. Read the article landing page or manuscript version, thesis record and document, patent register and notices, or dataset documentation and actual file.
- State the limits. Label preprints and theses accurately; distinguish application, grant, status and enforceability; identify data gaps, revisions and license terms.
- Preserve your evidence. Note the access date, identifier, version and exact record you used so another reader can reproduce the check.
How to choose among discovery services

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Citing a search snippet
Snippets can truncate titles, merge metadata or display stale text. Open the underlying record and cite its stable identifier.
Calling a synopsis a thesis
ShodhGangotri describes approved or proposed research. Label it as a synopsis and search Shodhganga or a publisher for completed work.
Treating a repository PDF as peer reviewed
Repositories may hold preprints, accepted manuscripts, theses or other documents. Verify the venue and publication state on the publisher’s record.
Calling every patent hit an enforceable patent
Check whether the item is an application, publication, grant, lapsed or expired record, then inspect the register and notices. Do not rely solely on a dashboard result.
Assuming a government file is self-explanatory
Read the agency’s definitions, units, collection method, revision notes and license. Compare the downloaded file with its metadata before analysis.

Ignoring dates
Always separate filing, publication, grant and status dates for patents; deposit, submission and publication dates for scholarship; and reference period, release and update dates for data.
A practical record-keeping template
Create one entry for each source with these fields: object type; title; authors, inventors or publisher; responsible organization; stable identifier; version or status; key dates; geographic or disciplinary scope; access date; file or landing-page location; license or access terms; and limitations. Add a short note explaining why the item answers your question and which claims it cannot support. This simple log prevents a later draft from confusing discovery metadata with verified evidence.
