Find the screenshot button on your HP EliteBook
Look for these labels
Scan the upper-right area of the keyboard for PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen. The exact wording and position vary by EliteBook layout, but these labels refer to the same Windows screenshot function.
Check whether Fn is required
Some HP laptop keyboards assign Print Screen as a secondary function. If pressing PrtSc alone appears to do nothing, hold Fn and press PrtSc. This is the first compatibility check HP recommends for laptop layouts.
Choose the shortcut that matches what you need

Take a screenshot step by step
Copy the entire display
- Show the content you want to capture.
- Press PrtSc. If the key is a secondary function, press Fn + PrtSc.
- Open Paint, a document, an email, or another app that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl + V.
- Use that app’s save command to create the image file.
This method does not itself create a file. The image remains on the Clipboard until you paste it or replace it with another copied item.

Copy only the active window
- Click the window you want so it is active.
- Press Alt + PrtSc (or the corresponding Fn combination if your EliteBook requires it).
- Paste with Ctrl + V into Paint, a document, email, or another image-capable app.
- Save the pasted image from that app.
Save a full-screen PNG automatically
- Press Windows + PrtSc. Use Windows + Fn + PrtSc if the keyboard requires Fn.
- Open File Explorer and go to PicturesScreenshots.
- Open the new PNG or copy it to the folder where you keep your captures.
This is the quickest choice when you want a complete display saved without first opening Paint.
Capture a selected region with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the desktop darkens, choose rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen mode.
- Select the area or window.
- Open the notification that appears.
- Use Snipping Tool to crop or annotate, then save the result.
Use this method for a small error message, one control, or a specific portion of a page instead of exposing the entire desktop.
Where your screenshot goes
Clipboard captures
PrtSc and Alt + PrtSc copy an image to the Clipboard. They do not automatically place a file in Pictures. Paste immediately with Ctrl + V; if you copy something else first, the earlier capture may no longer be available.

Automatically saved captures
Windows + PrtSc saves a PNG in PicturesScreenshots. If you do not see it, open File Explorer and check the Pictures folder associated with your Windows account, then sort by date.

Snipping Tool captures
Windows + Shift + S first places the capture in the snipping workflow. Open the notification to edit and choose where to save it; do not assume that merely selecting an area created a permanent file.
What to do when PrtSc does nothing
1. Try the Fn combination
Press Fn + PrtSc. HP documents that some notebook layouts require the function modifier.

2. Use the Windows fallback
Press Windows + Shift + S. This bypasses uncertainty about the Print Screen key and opens Windows’ region-capture overlay.
3. Check whether PrtSc is assigned to snipping
If PrtSc opens a darkened snipping overlay rather than copying the complete display, Windows may be configured to use Print Screen for screen snipping. Review the setting under Accessibility > Keyboard. Turn it off if you want the traditional clipboard behavior, or leave it enabled if the overlay is your preferred workflow.
4. Confirm the destination
If the shortcut worked but no file appears, you probably used a clipboard method. Paste into Paint or another destination and save manually. Only the Windows + PrtSc method has the documented automatic path, PicturesScreenshots.

5. Capture the correct window
For Alt + PrtSc, click the target window immediately before pressing the keys. If you need a region that crosses several windows, use Windows + Shift + S instead.
A practical choice for common situations
- Need the whole desktop as a file: use Windows + PrtSc.
- Need to paste a complete screen into a message: use PrtSc, then Ctrl + V.
- Need one application window: focus it and use Alt + PrtSc.
- Need a cropped or annotated excerpt: use Windows + Shift + S and Snipping Tool.
- Need a shortcut that works even when the HP key behavior is unclear: start with Windows + Shift + S.
