Most Pixel features are not hidden behind secret codes; they are tucked into gesture, multitasking, privacy, call and AI menus. Start with Settings search, type the feature name, and then confirm your Pixel model, Android version, country and carrier. The same menu can look different after an Android release or Pixel Feature Drop, and some tools are limited to newer phones.

This guide covers the shortcuts and tools that are easiest to miss: Quick Tap, split screen, Android 15 app pairing and Private Space, Call Screen and other Call Assist tools, Notification History, everyday check-and-navigation gestures, and Pixel AI features. Each section explains what the feature does, how to find it and the limits that determine whether it appears on your phone.

Check your Pixel before looking for a feature

Feature availability is not uniform across the Pixel range. Before troubleshooting a missing option, record three details:

  1. Open Settings > About phone and note the model name.
  2. Open Settings > System > Software update and install any available update.
  3. In Settings, use the search field for the feature name, such as Quick Tap, Private space or Notification history. Search is the safest fallback when Google moves a menu between Android releases.

Country, language, carrier, account type and the app version can also control access. A feature being documented for Pixel phones does not mean every generation has it. If a search result does not appear after an update, your model or region may not support that feature.

Use Quick Tap to trigger an action from the back

Quick Tap turns a double tap on the back of the phone into a shortcut. Google documents it for Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones. It is useful when your other hand is occupied or you need a control faster than opening an app.

Set up the back-tap shortcut

  1. Open Settings > System > Gestures > Quick Tap to start actions.
  2. Turn on Use Quick Tap.
  3. Choose the action you want. Depending on the phone and software, choices can include taking a screenshot, pausing or resuming media, opening an app and other available shortcuts.
  4. Return to the previous screen and double-tap the center of the back panel to test it.

A screenshot is the easiest first assignment because the result is immediate. Flashlight control, media pause and launching an app you use repeatedly are also practical. Try the gesture while holding the phone normally; tapping the case, a desk or the extreme edge of the phone can be less reliable.

Stop accidental triggers

Quick Tap has an option for a stronger tap. Enable the stronger-tap requirement in the Quick Tap settings if the shortcut fires while you pick up the phone, put it in a pocket or set it down. A thicker case can also change the force needed. If the gesture still misfires, assign a less disruptive action or switch Quick Tap off rather than accepting unwanted screenshots or media changes.

Put two apps on screen with split screen

Split screen is launched from the recent-apps view, not from the home-screen app icon. It is useful for reading a message while checking a calendar, following directions while entering an address or copying information between apps.

Start a split-screen session

  1. Open the first app.
  2. Open the recent-apps view using the Overview button or your navigation gesture.
  3. Tap the first app’s icon at the top of its preview.
  4. Choose Split screen.
  5. Select the second app from the recent-apps carousel or app list.

Drag the divider to give one app more space. To leave split screen, drag the divider fully to the top or bottom, or return to the home screen. Some split-screen behavior and menu labels require Android 14 or later.

When split screen is unavailable

An app can refuse split screen because its developer has not enabled the mode or because the app’s current screen cannot resize. Banking, camera and some games commonly restrict resizing. Try a different app, update the app, rotate the phone once and check again. If the Split screen command never appears for a particular app, that is an app limitation rather than a Pixel fault.

Reopen a combination with Android 15 app pairing

Android 15 adds app pairing for two-app combinations. After you create a pair, the recent-apps interface can offer a single shortcut to reopen both apps together. The exact button placement can differ by Pixel launcher version, so look for an App pair or pair icon in the split-screen or recent-apps controls. Pairing saves setup time; it does not make unsupported apps resizable.

Keep selected apps in Android 15 Private Space

Private Space creates a locked area for selected apps on Android 15. When the space is locked, those apps are hidden from the app list, recent apps, notifications and Settings surfaces that would normally reveal them. It is designed for separating sensitive apps from your everyday app list without requiring a second phone.

Create and lock the space

  1. Open Settings and search for Private space. On many Android 15 builds it appears under Security & privacy.
  2. Follow the setup prompts and choose whether to use your existing screen lock or a separate lock for the private area.
  3. Install or move the apps you want inside Private Space.
  4. Lock Private Space when you finish. The protected apps should disappear from the launcher, recent-apps view and notifications until you unlock the space.

Remember the unlock method. Losing access to it can prevent you from opening the apps or their data. Private Space is a privacy boundary within one phone, not a replacement for a separate user account, work profile or separate device. Notifications and data behavior can change when the space is locked, so test time-sensitive apps before relying on them.

Use Pixel Call Assist to handle unknown callers

Pixel Call Assist groups several call tools, but availability varies by country, language, carrier and Pixel model. Google describes Call Screen this way: “Call Screen uses Google Assistant to help you find out who’s calling and why before you pick up.” The tools are not a guarantee that every spam call will be blocked, and a supported menu on one Pixel does not prove that the same menu is available on another.

Call Screen

Call Screen asks an unknown caller to identify themselves before you answer. On supported phones, open the Phone app, enter its Settings, and look for Call Screen or a Spam and Call Screen section. Review the screening choices for unknown or suspected spam calls, then test the feature with a non-critical call. Depending on your region, the assistant may show a transcript or let you read the caller’s response before deciding whether to answer.

Keep the language and country requirements in mind. If Call Screen is missing, check the Phone app update, the device language and your carrier support before changing other settings.

Direct My Call

Direct My Call displays the choices spoken by some business phone menus, allowing you to tap an option instead of remembering the sequence. Look for it in the Phone app’s Call Assist or call settings. It works only with supported numbers and languages; a business’s audio system can prevent the choices from being recognized.

Call Notes

Call Notes can capture useful details from supported calls using on-device Gemini Nano processing. Because processing and availability depend on the Pixel model, Android version, language, region and call conditions, treat the feature as an aid rather than an official transcript. Confirm important names, dates, account numbers and commitments yourself, and follow local recording and notification laws before using any call-recording or note feature.

Recover dismissed alerts with Notification History

Notification History keeps a record of recent notifications so an accidental swipe does not permanently erase the alert. It is especially useful for one-time security prompts, delivery updates and messages whose app you cannot immediately identify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn it on before you need it

  1. Open Settings and search for Notification history.
  2. Open the result and turn on Use notification history.
  3. Afterward, return to this page whenever you need to review dismissed alerts.

History is not a recovery system for every past notification. It starts collecting after you enable it, stores a limited recent window and may omit content that an app deliberately hides. If an alert contained sensitive information, remember that anyone who can unlock your phone may be able to read its history.

Learn the small gestures hidden in everyday settings

Pixel’s gesture menu contains several conveniences that are easy to overlook. Open Settings > System > Gestures and use Settings search if the labels differ on your Android release.

Tap to check phone

Tap to check phone wakes the display when you tap it, letting you see the time and notifications without pressing the power button. Enable it if you often want a quick glance while the phone is on a desk.

  • The best phone camera under $500 - Take photos and videos so amazing, you won’t believe you actually took them. Capture small details, create perfect group shots, and even get vivid ones at night.
  • One ask, done across your apps - Save time by asking Gemini to find information and get things done for you across your Google apps – like Maps, Calendar, Gmail, and YouTube Music. It’s multitasking made easy.
  • Talk things out live - Instead of typing, use Gemini Live and have a natural, free-flowing conversation. Gemini follows along, even if you change the topic or switch the question mid-sentence.
  • Take the picture. And be in it, too - Add Me makes sure no one is left out of a photo. Take one with the group, then swap in the photographer, and Pixel magically merges both photos.
  • Tiny is epic - Use Macro Focus to reveal vivid color and striking contrast in photos and videos of the smallest details – like raindrops, flowers, or sprinkles.

Lift to check phone

Lift to check phone wakes the display when you pick up the device. It is convenient for checking an incoming notification, although repeated movement can wake the screen more often than you want. Turn it off if accidental wake-ups affect battery life or privacy.

Navigation gestures

Under the navigation settings, choose gesture navigation or the three-button layout. Gesture navigation generally uses a swipe up from the bottom for Home, a swipe up and hold for recent apps, and a swipe from either side for Back. Three-button navigation is easier to discover and can be preferable when a case or accessibility setting makes edge swipes unreliable. Android release updates can change the explanatory animations and exact labels.

Find Pixel AI tools without assuming every model has them

Google highlights several AI-assisted tools, including Audio Magic Eraser, document scanning and Gemini access from the power button on supported Pixel phones. These are model-, Android-release-, language- and region-dependent features.

Audio Magic Eraser

On a supported Pixel, open a video in Google Photos and look in the editing tools for Audio Magic Eraser. The tool can help reduce distracting sound categories, but the available controls and processing time vary by device and software. Keep the original video before saving an edited copy, especially when speech or evidence matters.

Document scanning

When a supported scanner is available, look for a document or scan option in the camera or the Google app that is handling your capture. Use a flat, well-lit page, keep all four corners in frame and review the resulting PDF or image for missing text. If no scan command appears, search Settings and the relevant app for document scan; the capability may be supplied by an app update rather than the phone hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gemini from the power button

On supported configurations, pressing and holding the power button can open Gemini instead of the traditional power menu. The assignment is controlled by the phone’s gesture or assistant settings, and the label can change after an Android update. Confirm the assistant language and account requirements before treating the shortcut as available.

A Pixel 9a technical data sheet published by Telquest International in 2025 lists Audio Magic Eraser and states seven years of software updates from first availability on the US Google Store. That update figure is specific to the Pixel 9a specification; verify Google’s current policy for any other model before relying on it.

Troubleshoot a feature that is missing or unreliable

The menu is not where the instructions say

Open Settings and search the feature name instead of browsing every category. Google can move a setting between Android releases and Pixel Feature Drops. If search finds a similarly named result, read its description before changing it; “Tap to check phone” and “Quick Tap” are separate gestures.

The feature appears but does nothing

  • Install the latest Android and relevant app updates, then restart the phone.
  • For Quick Tap, test a firmer double tap and enable the stronger-tap requirement if needed.
  • For split screen, test with two apps known to support resizing.
  • For Call Assist, confirm the device language, country, carrier and Phone app permissions.
  • For AI tools, check that the phone has enough free storage and that the feature is listed for your model.

The feature works on another Pixel but not yours

Compare model, Android version, carrier and language rather than assuming a hardware fault. Pixel Feature Drops can introduce a function to one generation before another, and regional services can be enabled or withdrawn independently. A missing feature after all updates usually means the phone is outside the supported combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and battery checks

Review notification previews if you enable Notification History or Private Space, because a lock-screen preview can reveal information even when an app is protected. Gestures that wake the display may increase screen-on time. For AI editing and call tools, keep originals, inspect generated notes and avoid sending sensitive material to a service unless you understand where processing occurs.

A practical five-minute Pixel feature tour

  1. Search Settings for Quick Tap and assign a screenshot, then test the stronger-tap option.
  2. Open recent apps and verify whether your two most-used apps offer Split screen.
  3. If the phone runs Android 15, search for Private space and decide whether its lock boundary suits your needs.
  4. Open the Phone app’s settings and note which Call Assist tools are actually offered in your country and language.
  5. Enable Notification history so future accidental dismissals can be recovered.
  6. Browse Settings > System > Gestures for Tap to check phone, Lift to check phone and navigation choices.
  7. Open Google Photos and check whether your model exposes Audio Magic Eraser or another supported AI editor.

The useful definition of a “hidden” Pixel feature is therefore practical rather than secret: a capability already on the phone but separated from the main home-screen experience. Settings search, your exact Android version and the support limits for your model are the fastest way to find what your particular Pixel can genuinely do.
