ChatGPT is more than a text box. Depending on your plan, workspace settings, platform and current usage limits, your account may also offer web search, Study mode, file and image tools, data analysis, voice, Canvas, Memory, Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. The fastest way to discover them is to start with a real task, inspect the tools available in that chat, and run a small experiment rather than trying to memorize a feature list.
This guide shows where to look, which tool fits which job, and what to check when a capability is missing. Menus and limits change, so treat the controls visible in your account as the authoritative list.

Start with a task, not a feature list
Write down what you are trying to accomplish before opening menus. A useful first question is which information ChatGPT needs:

- Your own document, spreadsheet, image or audio: use an upload or data tool if your chat offers one.
- Guided learning: try Study mode.
- A project that will continue over several conversations: create a Project.
OpenAI’s capabilities overview describes the broader menu, while its ChatGPT FAQ explains that access and limits can vary by subscription and settings. Use those pages for the latest account-specific details instead of assuming that another person’s interface is identical to yours.

Find the current tool controls
Open a normal chat and look around the message composer for the tool picker, attachment control or other icons. Labels and placement can differ between web, iOS and Android, and an organization can restrict tools in a managed workspace. The capabilities overview and FAQ both note that availability depends on plan and settings: capabilities overview and FAQ.
- Choose the platform you actually use. A feature visible on the web may have a different entry point on a phone.
- Open a fresh, ordinary chat. Some modes have exclusions; for example, Study mode is not available in Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects.
- Open the tool picker or attachment menu. Look for search, Study, file or image options and note which ones are enabled.
- Run a low-risk test. Ask for a small, verifiable result before committing sensitive information or a long workflow.
- Check the relevant Help Center article. Limits and names can change, and a workspace administrator may disable a tool.
Use web search when the answer must be current
Web search is for a new question whose answer may have changed: a current regulation, a recently released product, a live event or a set of up-to-date sources. OpenAI says ChatGPT search can find current information and provide links; see Searching the web with ChatGPT.
Try a first search
- Start a regular chat and select the web-search option if it appears in the composer’s tool picker. In supported experiences, ChatGPT may also invoke search automatically when it is useful.
- Ask a question with a date, location or other boundary. For example:
What changed in the 2026 EU AI rules? Cite the official sources and identify the publication dates. - Read the linked sources, not just the generated summary. Check whether each link actually supports the statement beside it.
- Follow up with a narrower request such as
Compare the two official definitions and quote the section headings, not unsourced commentary.
Web search is the right choice when freshness and external links matter. It is not a way to locate an old conversation in your account; use sidebar Search for that.
Improve the result without overcomplicating the prompt
- State the region and date range when rules, prices or availability differ by location.
- Ask for primary or official sources when the decision has legal, financial, medical or safety consequences.
- Request a source list and open the links yourself.
- Separate discovery from judgment: first ask for the relevant sources, then ask for a comparison grounded in those sources.
Find saved chats, projects, images and files
When you remember discussing something in ChatGPT but do not remember where, use the account’s sidebar Search. OpenAI’s guide says Search can surface chats, projects, images and files, although result types and connected sources can vary: Finding your chats, projects, and files in ChatGPT.

Search on the web
- Open the left sidebar and choose Search.
- Enter a distinctive phrase you remember from the conversation, rather than a broad topic such as “work.”
- Open the matching chat, project, image or file and confirm its context before continuing.
- If you remember only a fragment, try a second unusual word or phrase from the same conversation.
On the web, the same Help Center article documents Ctrl+K on Windows and Cmd+K on macOS as shortcuts for opening Search.
Do not confuse the two kinds of search
Sidebar Search looks through material associated with your ChatGPT account. Web search looks outward to online sources. If you ask sidebar Search for a breaking-news article, it will not search the public web; if you use web search to recover a private conversation, it is the wrong tool.
Use Study mode for guided learning
Study mode is designed to teach through questions, stepwise explanations and checks for understanding instead of simply returning a final answer. It can work with supplied course material when uploads are available. OpenAI documents the mode in Using study mode in ChatGPT.

- Open a regular chat and select Study from the composer’s tool picker, or use the study-mode entry point described in the Help Center article.
- Tell it your level, objective and time limit. Example:
I am preparing for a first-year biology exam. Ask one question at a time, give a hint before an explanation, and check my reasoning. - Attach a permitted worksheet, textbook excerpt, image or other study material when the upload control is available.
- Answer its questions instead of asking only for a finished solution. If it moves too quickly, say
Slow down and ask me one question at a time. - After the session, ask for a short list of concepts you still need to practise.
What to do when it gives the answer too soon
Study mode is intended to guide you, but OpenAI warns that it can sometimes answer directly and can make mistakes. Ask explicitly for a hint, a worked example with a missing step, or a check of your attempt. Verify important facts against your course material or instructor.

Where Study mode will not appear
The Help Center says Study mode is available globally across plans on the web, iOS and Android, subject to ordinary plan and rate-limit rules. It is not available in Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects, and workspace configuration can affect tools. If you cannot find it, first switch to a standard chat and then check your workspace and account controls.
Organize ongoing work with Projects
A Project keeps related chats, reference files and instructions together for an objective that continues over time. The documented feature and its controls are covered in Projects in ChatGPT.
Create a useful Project
- Choose New project from the sidebar.
- Give it a specific name, such as
Q4 accessibility audit, rather than a vague label such asWork. - Add the reference files and write project instructions that apply to every conversation, such as the audience, preferred format or definitions to use.
- Keep related chats inside that Project so its context remains together.
- Review the files and instructions periodically; remove obsolete material so new answers are not based on an outdated reference.
Project file limits depend on your plan and workspace settings. An administrator may also disable tools within Projects. Because Study mode is unavailable in Projects, use a normal chat for that learning workflow or move only the necessary material into an eligible conversation.

When a Project is better than one long chat
- Use a Project when the work has several deliverables, recurring reference material or shared instructions.
- Use a single chat when the question is self-contained and you do not need continuing context.
- Use sidebar Search when the material already exists but is not yet organized; you can then decide whether to move related work into a Project.
Explore the rest of the menu safely
The official capabilities overview lists additional possibilities: image input and generation, file and audio uploads, data analysis, voice, Canvas, Memory, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. Their exact controls, limits and availability are not universal, so use the overview as a map and open the dedicated Help Center guidance before relying on one for important work: ChatGPT capabilities overview.

Image input and generation
If an image control appears, try a small task such as asking for a description of a diagram you provide, or requesting a simple concept image. Confirm that the output matches your intended subject and disclose when an image is generated rather than documentary.
Files, audio and data analysis
When uploads are enabled, start with a non-sensitive sample. Ask the tool to identify the columns, summarize the audio or describe the document before requesting a transformation. For a spreadsheet, specify the exact question and desired output, then inspect calculations and assumptions rather than accepting a polished number without checking it.
Voice and Canvas
Voice can be useful when speaking is easier than typing; Canvas can help with work that benefits from an editable space. Look for each in the current interface and consult the feature’s current help page for supported platforms and limits before planning a workflow around it.
Memory, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs
These features can change how ChatGPT retains context, performs recurring work or follows specialized instructions. Treat them as optional experiments: read the current settings, understand what information is involved, and start with a harmless reminder or a non-sensitive custom workflow. The capabilities overview is the appropriate starting point because availability and controls vary.

You do not need to enable everything at once. Use one real task per day and keep only tools that produce a measurable improvement.
- Day 1 — Current question: use web search and inspect every linked source.
- Day 2 — Retrieval: use sidebar Search with a distinctive phrase to recover an old chat or file.
- Day 3 — Learning: use Study mode on one lesson and request hints before answers.
- Day 4 — Organization: create a Project for a continuing objective and add only its essential references.
- Day 5 — Your data: test an available file, image, audio or data tool with a non-sensitive sample.
- Day 6 — Interaction: try voice or Canvas if the controls appear on your platform.
- Day 7 — Review: keep a short note of the task, tool, time saved, errors found and whether you would use it again.
This method exposes the practical trade-off: a feature is valuable when it fits a recurring need and produces a result you can verify, not merely because it exists in a menu.
What to check when a feature is missing
Do not assume a missing button means the feature was removed. Availability can depend on several independent conditions.
- Plan: your subscription may not include the capability or may impose a limit.
- Workspace: an administrator can restrict tools, including tools inside Projects.
- Platform: web, iOS and Android can expose different entry points.
- Chat type: some modes are excluded from Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects.
- Usage limit: a temporary rate limit may hide or block an action until it resets.
- Interface changes: the label or location may have moved.
- Switch to a standard chat and refresh the app or browser.
- Check the tool picker and attachment menu again.
- Confirm your plan and workspace permissions.
- Read the current Help Center article for that capability.
- If the feature is still absent, continue with an available alternative rather than sharing sensitive material in an unverified workflow.
Choose the right source for the information
The most important discovery habit is matching the tool to the information’s origin. Web search is for current public sources. Sidebar Search is for material already associated with your account. Study mode can use learning material you supply when uploads are available. Projects provide an organized home for continuing work. Mixing these roles leads to predictable mistakes, such as expecting account Search to know breaking news or expecting a Project to provide Study mode.
Uploads and account-specific tools should remain optional. Before sharing private, confidential or regulated information, review the current settings and Help Center guidance for your account; the feature pages establish how to access the tools but do not constitute a complete privacy or data-handling guide.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the answer likely to change? Search the web.
- Did you already see it in ChatGPT? Search the sidebar.
- Do you want to learn a method, not just obtain an answer? Use Study mode.
- Will the work continue with the same references and instructions? Create a Project.
- Does the task depend on your spreadsheet, image, audio or document? Use an available upload or analysis tool.
- Is the feature absent? Check chat type, plan, workspace, platform and limits before concluding that it is unavailable.
Feature discovery works best as a series of small, verifiable experiments. Start with the task, select the source of information it requires, inspect the controls your account actually provides, and keep the workflows that make a repeatable job clearer or faster.
