For a clear first look at how a galaxy like the Milky Way can form, start with the European Space Agency’s Vintergatan animation. To explore the underlying particle data, try the FIRE project’s Firefly examples; for datasets and comparisons, use FIRE’s Latte pages, Illustris, or FlatHUB. These resources serve different purposes: some tell a visual story, some let you inspect model data, and others help you browse or compare datasets.
Where can you watch a Milky Way formation simulation?
Start with ESA’s Vintergatan animation
ESA’s Vintergatan page, dated 21 March 2024, presents a simulated Milky Way-like galaxy from the early universe to 3 billion years ago. It shows dark matter structures assembling, followed by gas and star formation, and marks a collision involving the young galaxy. ESA credits the animation to “Vintergatan – Renaud, Agertz et al. (2021).” It is a model history of a galaxy like ours, not a recording of the Milky Way’s actual past.

Read the labels as part of the explanation: the video uses redshift (z) and gigayears (Gyr) to mark time. Its legend assigns blue to gas, white to stars, red to dark matter, and green to iron. That color key applies to this animation only; other simulations can use different colors or visual encodings. ESA notes that the video contains third-party content and must not be modified or reused in other productions without explicit authorization.

A formation simulation represents a galaxy’s history with model data, such as particles representing dark matter, gas, and stars, and renders selected properties so people can examine the evolving system. A simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy is not a time-lapse observation of our own galaxy. It is a theoretical model used to study how a comparable galaxy can develop in a cosmological setting.

For example, FIRE’s Latte overview describes high-resolution FIRE-2 simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies, including m12i and m12f. The page frames them as a way to study galaxy formation in a cosmological context. Their focus on Milky Way-mass analogues differs from a broader cosmological project that simulates many kinds of galaxies.
How can you explore a simulation interactively?
Use Firefly to inspect particle data
Firefly is a web application for interactively exploring 3D particle data; it is a viewer, not the simulation that generated the data. Its examples include FIRE visualizations with different emphases: a low-resolution view highlights hot outflows with velocity vectors and temperature, a high-resolution rendering shows disk surface density and spiral structure, and a time series follows disk formation. In the live demo, pink points represent dark matter when zoomed out.

- Milky Way wall art décor – Create a large Milky Way Galaxy piece of art with this LEGO building kit for adults
- LEGO 3D-effect wall décor – A Milky Way Galaxy artwork created from 3,091 layered LEGO bricks and pieces to produce a 3D effect with depth and texture
- Packed with features – Wall art includes some of the Milky Way’s most famous stars, clusters and other spectacles, including Trappist-1, The Pleiades, The Crab Nebula and The Pillars of Creation
- Space gift idea – LEGO art set for adults who love astronomy and immersing themselves in creative activity
- A social building experience – This home décor gift idea is made with 5 different panels, each with its own building instructions booklet so a group of friends can create together
When exploring a viewer, check what quantity the display encodes before interpreting its colors, points, or vectors. Temperature, velocity, density, and particle type answer different questions; a vivid feature is not meaningful without its legend or controls.
Find FIRE outputs and associated surveys
The FIRE Milky Way data page says raw present-day (z=0) snapshots are available for m12f, m12i, and m12m, including dark matter, gas, and star particles. It also points to associated synthetic Gaia DR2-like surveys through Ananke. These outputs are a route for readers who want data rather than only a rendered animation.

How do Illustris and FlatHUB differ?
| Resource | Best suited to | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| Illustris | Exploring a broad cosmological galaxy-formation project | Scientific background, results and references, movies and images, public data access, and interactive exploration tools. The collaboration describes Illustris as a large cosmological simulation completed in late 2013. |
| FlatHUB | Browsing, filtering, comparing, and downloading data | A platform listing collections including FIRE, Gaia DR2/DR3, Illustris, and IllustrisTNG, as well as Milky Way and cosmological galaxy-formation collections. It supports preview plots and subset downloads. |
| FIRE Latte | Focusing on Milky Way-like galaxy analogues | High-resolution FIRE-2 simulations, including m12i and m12f, presented as tools for studying galaxy formation in a cosmological context. |
Illustris provides a wider cosmological perspective, while Latte is more directly centered on Milky Way-mass analogues. FlatHUB is different from both: it is a catalog and data-exploration platform for comparing simulations with curated observational or experimental collections, rather than a single narrative animation.
What do colors and time labels mean?
There is no universal color code for galaxy-formation simulations. Use the legend and controls for the specific video or viewer. In Vintergatan, for example, blue means gas and red means dark matter; those meanings should not be carried over to Firefly or another project without checking its own key.

- Redshift (z): a label used to locate a stage in the universe’s history. Read it alongside the animation’s own timeline.
- Gigayears (Gyr): billions of years. In Vintergatan, the time labels help establish where the animation begins and ends.
- Particle properties: a display may encode a property such as temperature, velocity, or surface density, rather than simply identifying a type of object. Check the visualization’s legend before drawing conclusions.
How are Gaia maps different from formation simulations?
Gaia-based visuals describe the Milky Way using observational data, not a simulated formation history. ESA’s Gaia overview describes artist impressions based on Gaia data and explains that the mission maps the galaxy from within, using information star by star. It also notes Gaia data’s impact on understanding the central bar and spiral arms. Firefly includes an example visualizing real stellar positions and velocities from Gaia; that is distinct from viewing simulated particles evolve through time.
