Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage first. Identify the apps or system functions using the most power, then change only the matching control: restrict background use for a misbehaving app, reduce unnecessary screen use, disable connectivity you are not using, or turn on Battery Saver when you need longer runtime. Menu names differ by Android brand, model, carrier and software version, so search Settings for Battery if the path below does not match your phone.
Start by measuring the drain instead of switching off everything
A battery graph tells you when the charge fell; the usage list helps explain why. Look at both before changing settings. An app at the top is not automatically faulty: a navigation session, video call, game, camera recording, hotspot, streaming, weak mobile signal or a hot phone can legitimately make it use more energy.

- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage, or search Settings for Battery usage.
- Review the recent graph and the list beneath it. Note whether the high-use period matches something you were doing.
- Open the details for the relevant app or system function. Record what is shown before changing a setting so you can tell whether the change helped.
- Change one related setting at a time, use the phone normally, and check the usage screen again. This avoids disabling several features and losing track of the cause.
The percentages may not total exactly 100 percent on Pixel phones because Google says the figures are rounded. Treat the list as a diagnostic ranking, not a laboratory measurement of the amount each setting will save.
Find the battery-usage screen on your Android phone
Most Android phones
The common route is Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Some manufacturers call the page Battery usage by app, App battery usage or simply Battery. If you cannot find it, use the Settings search field and type Battery, then choose the result that shows a graph or app list.

Google Pixel
On a supported Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Tap View by apps to rank applications. Pixel also provides View by systems, which can reveal system functions rather than an individual app. Select an item to see its available background-use controls. Google notes that not every app exposes the same controls.
Samsung Galaxy
On many Galaxy models, open Settings > Battery > View details. The page can show app use as well as screen-on and screen-off time. Samsung warns that the exact path and labels vary with the carrier, software version and model, so use the Settings search field when necessary.
When the list needs context
Compare the usage period with your actions and the signal conditions. A top-ranked app may have been on screen for hours, used GPS during a trip, uploaded photos, handled a video call, or maintained a connection in a place with poor mobile coverage. A high screen-on time points toward display settings; a high background figure points toward synchronization, location checks, notifications or another task happening while the app was not visible.

Restrict background activity for a specific app
Background restrictions are the most targeted software change, but they can delay notifications, mail, messages, health records, security checks, navigation updates or wearable synchronization. Restrict an app because its observed behavior warrants it, not simply because it appears in the list.
Pixel: review “Allow background usage”
- Go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Select the app that is using unusually high power.
- Review Allow background usage, when that control is available.
- Keep Optimized enabled for ordinary apps unless you have a specific reason to select a more restrictive option. Google recommends optimization as the general setting.
If your Pixel places the control elsewhere, try Settings > Apps > App battery usage, select the app, and review its battery setting. A setting shown for one app may not be available for another.

Samsung Galaxy: use Background usage limits
- Open Settings > Battery > Background usage limits.
- Review the list of unused apps to sleep and the current Sleeping apps.
- Add an app to Deep sleeping apps only when you accept that it will not run in the background.
- Remove an app from a sleeping list if its notifications or synchronization become unreliable.
Samsung describes a deep-sleeping app as one that does not run in the background and works only when you open it. That can save background activity, but it is unsuitable for software that must receive events while you are not looking at it.
Choose exceptions deliberately
- Messaging and mail: restrictions can delay incoming alerts.
- Health, safety and security apps: background checks or emergency functions may stop until the app is opened.
- Navigation and travel apps: route or location updates can be interrupted.
- Wearable and smart-home apps: device synchronization may pause.
- One-time or rarely used apps: sleeping them is usually less disruptive than restricting an app you depend on every day.
Use the least restrictive setting that solves the problem
Start with the manufacturer’s optimized setting, then test a narrower restriction. If the app’s battery use falls but a required notification stops arriving, restore the previous setting and look for a different cause, such as a long screen session or poor signal. A battery setting is a trade-off, not a guarantee of extra runtime.
Reduce display power when the screen is the main user
The display can dominate usage when the phone is bright or remains awake between tasks. Make changes that fit how you use the device:
- Shorten Screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when you put the phone down.
- Lower brightness when full brightness is unnecessary.
- Enable Adaptive brightness or Automatic brightness if your phone offers it, allowing the phone to avoid more brightness than the surroundings require.
- Review Always On Display, high-refresh-rate and wake-on-notification options if your model provides them. Turn off a feature only if you do not need its at-a-glance information.
Display changes help most when the battery page shows substantial screen-on time. They will not fix an app that continues doing heavy work while the screen is off.
Use Battery Saver or Power saving for the right situation
Android Battery Saver
Turn on Battery Saver when extending the remaining charge is more important than unrestricted background activity. Google says Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity and may delay some visual effects, features, network connections or apps. Depending on the phone, you can turn it on from Settings > Battery > Battery Saver or from Quick Settings.

Battery Saver is best treated as a temporary operating mode—for example, while you are away from a charger—not as proof that one particular app is defective. Check which notifications or synchronization tasks are delayed before relying on it for time-sensitive work.

Samsung may label the equivalent feature Power saving. Its options can limit background network use and synchronization. Selectable controls may also reduce CPU speed, lower brightness or disable Always On Display. Open the feature’s details before enabling it so you know which compromises your model will make.
Adaptive Battery and optimization
Pixel phones include Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization. Google advises keeping those features enabled on Pixel in normal use. Adaptive Battery learns usage patterns rather than applying the same restriction to every app, so it is a better default than manually deep-sleeping essential services.
Turn off connectivity and location only when you do not need them
Wireless radios and hotspot
In Settings > Network & internet or the corresponding Samsung menu, turn off Bluetooth, hotspot or another radio when it is not needed. Airplane mode is appropriate when you do not need mobile network access at all. Wi-Fi can be preferable to mobile data where practical, especially for large downloads or streaming, but the useful choice depends on the signal and your task.
Do not disable a connection that a required service depends on. Turning off Bluetooth can disconnect a watch or car system; disabling mobile data can stop communication when you leave Wi-Fi; and Airplane mode prevents ordinary cellular calls and messages.

Location
Review Settings > Location and the location permission for apps that do not need continuous access. Turning Location off can save activity from location-dependent apps, but maps, ride services, geofencing, weather automation and some safety features will not work correctly without it. A better compromise may be changing an app from continuous access to use only while the app is open, if your Android version offers that permission.
Why 5G is not a universal culprit
Samsung describes a particular network scenario in which a Galaxy phone maintains 5G together with 3G or LTE connectivity for service. In those conditions, using 3G/LTE alone can use less battery than maintaining the additional 5G connection. This is a Samsung-described behavior, not a universal ranking of battery causes: coverage, carrier configuration, modem software and local network conditions matter. Change the preferred network type only if your phone and carrier expose that option and you are willing to trade speed or coverage for potentially lower radio activity.

The official guidance does not establish a controlled percentage saving for any row. Your result depends on the model, software, signal, temperature, screen use and the work the phone is doing.
Change one thing at a time and verify the result
- Capture a baseline: note the battery percentage, the usage period, screen-on time and the leading app or system category.
- Pick the narrowest matching change: for example, shorten the screen timeout for display-heavy use or restrict one nonessential app with high background use.
- Use the phone normally: test the same type of activity that produced the drain. A navigation day cannot be fairly compared with an idle day.
- Check function as well as battery: confirm that required notifications, calls, synchronization, location and wearable connections still work.
- Keep or undo the change: if the battery list improves without an unacceptable loss of function, keep it. Otherwise restore the prior setting and test a different cause.
Avoid turning off brightness automation, Location, Bluetooth, mobile data, background activity and notifications all at once. That approach may hide the cause and create several new problems.

Allow time for software changes and updates to settle
After a Pixel update, setup or reset
Google says Pixel battery use can be somewhat higher for a few days after a software update while the phone downloads and optimizes software. After initial setup or a factory reset, Adaptive Battery may take a few weeks to learn your patterns. These timing notes are Pixel-specific; do not assume every Android phone behaves identically.
Restart and update before deeper intervention
For unexplained drain, restart the phone and install available Android and app updates. An update can correct a runaway process or improve compatibility, while a restart clears a temporary process that may not appear as a clear setting problem. Recheck Battery usage after the phone has returned to ordinary use.
What to do when the phone remains hot or drains quickly
Heat is both a clue and a risk. Google states: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Keep the phone out of direct sun, avoid leaving it in a hot vehicle, and stop intensive charging or processing if the device becomes unusually hot. Google also warns that heat can damage the battery.
- Check whether the heat began during charging, gaming, navigation, video recording, hotspot use or a weak-signal period.
- Look at Battery usage for an app or system function that remained active during the hot period.
- Restart, update Android and update the affected apps.
- Repeat the observation when the phone is cool and on a normal network connection.
- If the problem continues, contact the phone manufacturer or an appropriately qualified repair or battery-diagnostic service.
Do not make a factory reset an early battery-saving step. It removes personal data and settings. Consider it only after backing up important data, confirming that less destructive troubleshooting has failed, and deciding that the loss of local data and setup time is acceptable. Follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions for your exact model.
Know when a restriction is the wrong fix
- The top app is the one you intentionally used most: reduce the activity or screen time rather than treating normal use as a fault.
- Only notifications are late after a change: undo the background restriction for that app.
- Battery drain began immediately after an update: allow the Pixel-specific settling period when applicable, then update apps and monitor; persistent problems warrant manufacturer support.
- The phone is hot while idle: stop using it in the heat, inspect recent activity and seek support if the temperature or drain remains abnormal.
- A menu is missing: search Settings for Battery, check the manufacturer’s support documentation, and account for your model, Android release and carrier. A control shown on Pixel or Galaxy may not exist on another phone.
A practical maintenance routine
Once the immediate problem is resolved, check Battery usage occasionally rather than changing every setting preemptively. Keep Adaptive Battery or the normal optimized mode enabled where your phone provides it, review sleeping-app lists after major updates, and remove a restriction when an app becomes important for notifications or synchronization. This preserves the phone’s normal behavior while giving you a way to investigate a new spike.
The goal is not the lowest possible activity number. It is a phone that lasts through the workday while still delivering the calls, alerts, location services, connections and background updates you actually need.
