The fastest way to improve an Android phone’s battery life is to identify what is using power before disabling anything. Open Settings, find Battery and Battery usage, then investigate the apps and system functions at the top of the list. Restrict only unnecessary background work, and reduce screen, location, hotspot, mobile-data and streaming use when those activities are responsible. Use Battery Saver as a temporary trade-off, not as a cure for every battery problem.
Android menu names and controls vary by manufacturer, model and Android version. If a path below does not match your phone, use Settings search for “battery” or consult your phone maker’s support documentation.

Start with Battery usage instead of guessing
Battery-saving advice is most effective when it follows evidence from your own phone. A bright display, a navigation session, a hotspot connection and one unusually active app can all look like “bad battery life,” but they require different fixes. Checking the usage screen first prevents you from disabling a feature you still need.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery. On some phones you may need to tap Battery and device care, Power or a similar heading first.
- Choose Battery usage or Battery usage since last full charge.
- Review the apps and, if offered, switch between an app view and a system view.
On Pixel phones, the battery page reports use since the last full charge and includes View by apps and View by systems. The displayed percentages are rounded, so the visible amounts may not total exactly 100%. Google describes the report and its navigation in Pixel Phone Help.

Read the list as a diagnosis
- An app near the top: Open its detail page and check foreground time, background activity and whether its work is necessary.
- Screen or display near the top: Brightness, screen-on time, long video sessions, games and navigation are likely contributors.
- Mobile network, hotspot, Bluetooth or location: Look for a connection or sensor that has remained active longer than intended.
- Android system or another system category: Check recent updates, weak-signal conditions, setup activity and hardware symptoms before changing app restrictions.
A high percentage does not automatically mean an app is defective. A video app can legitimately use substantial energy while you watch video, and a mapping app can use power while the screen, GPS and mobile network are active. The useful question is whether the activity was expected and whether its background work must continue when you are not using it.
Restrict an app that is draining power in the background
Background restriction is the most targeted intervention when one app is using power while you are not actively using it. It can also delay notifications, pause syncing, interrupt uploads or stop a feature that depends on continuous background access. Apply it to an outlier, not to every app.
Pixel path
- Go to Settings → Battery → Battery usage.
- Tap the app you want to investigate.
- Open Allow background usage.
- Leave the setting at Optimized unless you have a specific reason to choose a more restrictive option.
- If the app is clearly unnecessary in the background, select the restrictive option shown on your phone, then use the app normally for a while to check whether notifications or syncing are affected.
Google’s Pixel guidance recommends keeping eligible apps set to Optimized in general. The exact choices can differ by Android release and manufacturer. Some apps expose no adjustable battery control at all.
Decide whether restriction is safe
- Usually suitable: an app you open rarely, a game that does not need alerts, or a shopping or social app whose background refresh is unimportant to you.
- Use caution: messaging, calendar, alarm, authentication, accessibility, device-finding, health, work-management and backup apps that must alert or sync reliably.
- Do not force-stop essential services casually: stopping a system component or a service another app depends on can make the phone or an app work incorrectly.
If an app’s battery use is high only while you are using it, restricting background activity will not remove the energy cost of that foreground task. Instead, reduce the screen brightness, shorten the display timeout or limit the activity itself.
Reduce screen power without making the phone hard to use
The display is often a major consumer during video, games, navigation and extended reading. Screen changes are low-risk because they do not stop notifications or background synchronization.

Brightness and timeout
- Open Settings → Display (the label may be Display and touch).
- Lower the brightness slider to the lowest comfortable level.
- Turn on Adaptive brightness or Automatic brightness if you want the phone to adjust to ambient light.
- Set Screen timeout or Screen sleep to a shorter interval that still fits your reading habits.
Long navigation sessions, video playback and graphics-heavy games keep the display and often the processor active. If the battery report shows high screen use, these settings and shorter sessions address the cause more directly than restricting unrelated apps.
Dark theme
Turn on Dark theme under Settings → Display when your phone and frequently used apps support it. Google lists Dark theme among general battery-saving measures, but the benefit depends on the display technology, brightness and how much of the interface is actually dark. Treat it as a modest usage adjustment rather than a guaranteed percentage saving.

Cut connectivity, location and streaming when they are not needed
Wireless radios and location services are useful precisely because they remain ready to work. Disable or shorten them only when the related function is not needed; otherwise you may lose calls, navigation, sharing, payments or app features.
Hotspot and tethering
A hotspot keeps the phone’s cellular connection and Wi-Fi sharing active, and connected devices can keep transferring data. Turn it off from Settings → Network and internet → Hotspot and tethering (wording varies) as soon as other devices no longer need it. Check the quick-settings panel as well, because a hotspot can be enabled there without opening Settings.
Location and GPS
Navigation, fitness tracking, geofencing and location sharing can keep location hardware and related network activity busy. If you do not need location temporarily, turn it off from Settings → Location, or review individual app permissions under Settings → Location → App location permissions. Limiting location can stop navigation, automatic local recommendations, emergency functions or other app features, so change permissions only for apps that do not need continuous access.

Mobile data, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Google’s general Android guidance identifies mobile-network use, Bluetooth and other connectivity as controls users can limit. In many situations Wi-Fi uses less battery than mobile data, particularly when cellular reception is weak, but the result depends on the network, radio conditions and what the phone is doing. Use Wi-Fi when it is available and reliable, and switch off Bluetooth when no connected accessory needs it.
Do not disable connectivity while you are relying on a call, a navigation route, a wearable, wireless audio, contactless payment or a file transfer. The immediate convenience cost can be greater than the battery benefit.
Streaming and moving calls
Video and music streaming combine screen, processor, network and often speaker use. Download media for offline playback when practical, lower brightness, and avoid streaming over a hotspot when a stable Wi-Fi connection is available. Calls while moving between coverage areas can require more network work; poor reception can also increase drain. These are usage choices, not reasons to block a specific app’s background activity.
Use Battery Saver as a temporary trade-off
Battery Saver is useful when you need the phone to last until you can charge it. It may limit or turn off background activity, change visual behavior, reduce some performance, and delay network connections or app work. The mode, schedule and individual controls depend on the phone.
Turn it on
- Open Settings → Battery → Battery Saver, or open the Quick Settings panel and tap Battery Saver.
- Review any options for automatic activation, scheduling or an extreme-saving mode.
- Enable it when you need extra runtime, and disable it when you need normal background delivery and performance.
Battery Saver is broad: it can affect many apps at once. That makes it appropriate for a low-battery emergency or a long day away from a charger, but less appropriate as the first response to one misbehaving app. Google lists the possible effects and trade-offs in its Android battery guidance.

Keep adaptive optimization enabled
Android’s adaptive battery and app-optimization systems learn which apps you use and when. On Pixel, Google recommends leaving Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled while diagnosing drain. Optimization is not instant: after a new setup or factory reset, Google says it may take a few weeks to reach its full effect. A Pixel can also use somewhat more battery for a few days after a software update while background work settles.
That timing is Pixel-specific guidance, not a promise for every Android phone. Avoid repeatedly changing optimization settings during the learning period; otherwise you make it harder to tell whether a change helped.
Where to check optimization
On many phones, app optimization is under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Battery optimization, or inside an app’s battery page. Pixel devices expose the relevant control from the app’s entry in Battery usage. If your phone uses different labels, search Settings for battery optimization or adaptive battery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the least disruptive fix
The right intervention depends on what the battery report identifies and what the affected function must do.
| Option | Best when | What it changes | Main cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Targeted app restriction | One app has unnecessary background use | Limits that app’s background work | Delayed notifications, syncing or uploads for that app |
| Screen adjustment | Display or long foreground sessions dominate use | Lowers brightness, shortens screen-on time or changes theme | Less viewing comfort; no fix for a radio or background process |
| Connectivity or location reduction | Hotspot, GPS, mobile data, Bluetooth or streaming is not needed | Turns off or shortens the relevant radio, sensor or activity | Loss of navigation, sharing, calls, accessories or app features |
| Battery Saver | You need extra runtime immediately | Applies broad background and visual/network limits | Delayed work, changed behavior and possible performance or convenience loss |
| Adaptive optimization | You want normal long-term management | Lets Android learn usage and optimize eligible apps | Benefits are gradual; controls are device-specific |
There is no universal percentage of battery saved by any one setting. The result depends on the phone, signal, display, apps, temperature and your usage pattern.

Work through persistent drain methodically
Restart and update
- Restart the phone.
- Open Settings → System → Software update (or the manufacturer’s equivalent) and install available Android updates.
- Open the Play Store, go to your account menu and choose Manage apps and device → Updates available; install app updates.
- Use the phone normally for a full charge cycle and inspect Battery usage again.
Google’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting and checking Android and app updates before escalating. An update can fix a runaway process, but it can also cause a short period of extra background activity while the phone reindexes or optimizes.
Check for a pattern instead of a single spike
Compare the battery page after ordinary use, after a night of standby and after the activity that seems suspicious. A single long navigation trip or software update can dominate one report without indicating a continuing fault. Note whether the phone is hot while idle, loses charge quickly with the screen off, or drains mainly during a particular app or connection.
Escalate when settings do not explain the loss
If drain continues after updates and reasonable settings changes, contact your carrier or phone manufacturer. Have the model, Android version, recent update date, battery-usage screenshots and a description of when the drain occurs ready. Manufacturer menus and diagnostics are model-specific, so their support team can identify controls that are not present in the standard Android path.

Factory reset is a last resort
A factory reset removes installed apps and their associated data. It can resolve software corruption, but it also erases local photos, messages, files, accounts and settings that are not backed up. Do not use it as routine battery advice.
- Back up photos, messages, contacts, authenticator data, files and app-specific data.
- Confirm that you know the Google account credentials and any device-protection requirements.
- Record the battery behavior and recent troubleshooting steps.
- Follow the manufacturer’s official reset instructions only after restart, updates and support guidance have not resolved the issue.
If the phone still loses power rapidly after a clean setup, the cause may be hardware, battery aging or a device-specific fault. Settings changes cannot repair a failing battery; use the manufacturer or an authorized service channel rather than buying an unrelated accessory as a diagnostic.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Disabling every app’s background activity: this can break notifications, backups, alarms and synchronization while offering little benefit for apps that were not draining power.
- Force-stopping system processes: essential services may restart, malfunction or cause new problems.
- Turning off location or mobile data permanently: this can disable functions you depend on and does not address a display-heavy workload.
- Expecting an instant result after setup or an update: Pixel optimization may take a few weeks after setup or reset, and a few days of extra drain after an update can be normal.
- Trusting a rounded percentage as laboratory precision: battery reports summarize your recent use; Pixel values may not add to exactly 100% because they are rounded.
- Resetting before backing up: a factory reset is destructive and should come after less disruptive troubleshooting.
A practical five-minute battery check
- Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage.
- Identify the highest app or system category and decide whether its activity was expected.
- If one app is an unnecessary background outlier, open its battery page and review Allow background usage; keep essential apps optimized.
- If screen use is high, lower brightness, enable adaptive brightness and shorten the timeout.
- If hotspot, location, Bluetooth, mobile data or streaming is active without a current need, stop that activity.
- Use Battery Saver only when the broad trade-offs are acceptable.
- Restart, update Android and update apps if the pattern persists, then contact the carrier or manufacturer for model-specific help.
