How to Find and Sign Up for Your Utility’s Outage Alerts

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the electric utility that serves your address, then use its official website, account portal, outage map, mobile app, or text-registration instructions. Enrollment is local: one provider may require an account number, another may accept an address-only map signup, and a third may require every text recipient to confirm. Before entering personal information or texting a short code, verify that the page belongs to your utility and check its current terms.

This guide explains how to identify the right provider, choose the most useful alert route, complete enrollment, and handle renters, multiple contacts, recent moves, medical needs, and failed confirmations. The examples reflect utility instructions checked October 13, 2026; screens, short codes, eligibility, and alert coverage can change.

Use this six-step signup checklist

  1. Identify the provider for the address. Check an electricity bill or search the provider’s official site for “outage alerts,” “outage notifications,” or “outage center.” Do not use an unverified third-party registration page.
  2. Open the official alert page. Look for a link to account preferences, an outage map, an app, or text registration. Utilities do not use one universal enrollment method.
  3. Prepare the requested identifier. Depending on the provider, you may need an account number, ZIP code, meter number, service address, or only a phone number or email address.
  4. Select channels and alert categories. Available options can include text, email, automated calls, and app notifications. Categories may include outage detection, estimated restoration, progress updates, restored service, planned work, or public-safety events.
  5. Verify every contact method. Finish the email or phone confirmation and read any text confirmation request. Some providers will not send alerts until each recipient replies.
  6. Review, save, and manage the enrollment. Confirm the service address and contact details, check carrier-message terms, and note the provider’s instructions for changing preferences or opting out.

Find the utility serving your address

The company that bills you is usually the fastest starting point. If you recently moved, own a rental property, or receive electricity through a landlord or building manager, verify the provider for the specific service address rather than relying on a previous resident’s information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check a bill or service document

Look for the electric utility’s legal name, customer-service number, and account or service identifier on a paper or electronic bill. A municipal utility, electric cooperative, investor-owned utility, or regional provider may serve an address even when a different company handles billing or building management.

Use the provider’s own website

On the utility’s official domain, search for “outage alerts,” “outage notifications,” “outage center,” or “outage map.” A legitimate enrollment page should explain the service area, the information required, available channels, and how to stop messages. If a search result asks for unrelated payment information or redirects through an unfamiliar domain, leave it and navigate from the utility’s main site instead.

Confirm the service territory

Neighboring addresses can have different utilities, especially across city, county, provincial, or state boundaries. Enter the exact address into the provider’s outage map or account portal when possible. An alert subscription tied to the wrong address will not reliably report your home’s status.

Choose the right enrollment route

Utilities commonly expose several routes, but each route can cover a different set of alerts. Compare them before signing up rather than assuming that a text subscription and an account subscription are equivalent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Route What it may require Best use Important limitation to check
Account portal Online login and an account or service address Managing several channels and detailed preferences Some programs are restricted to account holders
Outage map Address search, outage selection, phone number, or email Getting updates for a currently displayed outage A subscription may end when that outage is restored and require a new signup for a future event
Text registration Mobile number and sometimes an account number or keyword Fast notifications when you are away from a computer Each recipient may need to confirm; carrier message and data charges can apply
Mobile app App installation and an account or linked address Push notifications plus map and account tools App availability and alert categories differ by provider
Email or automated calls Verified email address or phone number Households that do not want text messages Voice and email may be separate preferences and may not cover every event

When two routes are available, compare whether they follow the same address, whether they cover planned outages as well as unplanned failures, what information each message contains, how easy it is to change contacts, and whether the provider charges or warns about messaging costs.

Prepare the information the utility may request

  • Account number: Con Edison asks for an account number and ZIP code for its text-registration process. National Grid’s Massachusetts text enrollment uses a 10-digit account number.
  • Meter number: CenterPoint may ask for the electric meter number when you link the account in My Account.
  • Service address: An outage-map subscription may use the address instead of an account login.
  • Contact details: Have the mobile number, email address, or both that you want the provider to notify.
  • Access to the device or inbox: You may need to reply to a confirmation text or click an email verification link before alerts begin.

Enter only the information shown on the utility’s official enrollment screen. Never send an account number or meter number to an unknown number found in a social-media post or an unsolicited message.

Decide which alerts you actually need

Unplanned outage and restoration messages

Many providers can notify you when an outage is detected, send an estimated restoration time or progress update, and report when service is restored. The timing and wording are provider-specific, and an estimate can change as crews learn more.

Planned-work notifications

Some utilities separate planned maintenance from emergency outage alerts. Turn on repair, maintenance, or planned-outage categories if you need advance notice of scheduled work.

Public-safety or emergency events

Safety shutoffs and other public-safety events may use a separate program. Do not treat an ordinary outage subscription as an emergency-response service. Read the utility’s dedicated safety-alert instructions and any medical-support program information.

Multiple channels

Use at least one channel that you will notice during a power failure. Texts can reach a phone when you are away from home; email is useful for records; voice calls can help people who do not regularly read messages; and an app may combine push notifications with an outage map. More channels are not automatically better if nobody maintains the contact details.

Official signup examples

The following are provider-specific examples, not universal commands. Verify the utility’s current page before using any short code or keyword.

Con Edison

  1. Text REG to 688-243.
  2. Follow the prompts and provide the account number and ZIP code.
  3. After registration, text OUT to report a power problem or STATUS to check its status.
  4. Text STOP to cancel, according to the provider’s instructions.

Con Edison warns that text and data rates may apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

National Grid in Massachusetts

  1. For email or phone alerts, sign in to the account and open the notification or preference settings.
  2. For text alerts, text REG to 64743.
  3. Keep the 10-digit account number available and complete any requested confirmation.

The listed alert types include outage detection, restoration estimates and updates, and restored-service notices. Text and data rates may apply, and STOP is the stated opt-out command.

Southern California Edison

  1. Sign in to My Account.
  2. Open Settings, then Alerts & Notifications.
  3. Enable Emergency Alerts and Repair and Maintenance Alerts as needed.

SCE also describes address-based Public Safety Power Shutoff alerts for some people who do not have an SCE service account, including residential and commercial tenants, caregivers, frequent travelers, and service providers. That option is an example of SCE’s eligibility rules, not a promise that other utilities offer the same arrangement.

PG&E

Account holders can set outage preferences in My Account. PG&E also provides an outage-map route that does not require an online account:

Hydro One

Hydro One lists three enrollment paths:

  • Sign up through myAccount.
  • Text register to 92887, also identified as WATTS.
  • In the mobile app, open Outage Map, then Menu, then Get Outage Alerts.

Depending on the event and available information, alerts can include outage details, updates, the cause or affected area, estimated restoration, and a restoration notice. Hydro One notes that text or data charges may apply.

CenterPoint Power Alert Service

  1. Sign in to My Account and link the electric account.
  2. Provide the meter number if the account-linking screen requests it.
  3. Choose Manage or Sign up for Power Alert Service.
  4. Select text, email, calls, or a combination.
  5. Have every text recipient reply to the confirmation message.

CenterPoint allows up to five text contacts, five email contacts, and five phone contacts per electric account. Its instructions also warn that message and data rates may apply.

Consumers Energy

Consumers Energy says customers can sign in or text REG to 232273 to begin outage-alert enrollment. Its listed updates cover outage awareness, estimated restoration, and restored power. Message and data rates may apply.

Toronto Hydro

  1. Sign in to the self-serve portal.
  2. From Account Summary, select Outage notifications.
  3. Enter a mobile number, an email address, or both.
  4. Save the settings and complete any verification requested.

Toronto Hydro advises customers to keep profile contact details current.

Special situations that change the signup path

You rent or do not hold the account

Search the provider’s pages for “address alerts,” “non-customer alerts,” or “outage-map notifications.” SCE’s address-based PSPS option shows that a tenant or caregiver may sometimes receive safety notifications without owning the service account. Eligibility is local, so ask the utility whether the alert follows the address or requires the account holder’s permission.

You do not have an online account

Try text registration or an outage-map signup. PG&E’s map route accepts an address plus a phone number or email without requiring an online account, but the user must enroll again for a later outage. Other utilities may permit text enrollment while still requiring an account number.

Several people need the alerts

Check the program’s contact limits and confirmation rules before adding family members, a property manager, or a caregiver. CenterPoint’s limit is five text, five email, and five phone contacts per electric account, and every text recipient must confirm independently. A person who never completes that confirmation may not receive messages.

You moved recently

Review the enrolled address immediately after transferring service. CenterPoint says alerts stop for the old address when electric service is disconnected and directs customers to link the account at the new address. Do not assume a phone number remains attached to the correct location after a move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Someone relies on electricity for medical equipment

Ordinary outage alerts are not a guaranteed emergency service and should not be the only safety plan. Read the utility’s medical or public-safety program instructions, ask about priority or medical-baseline registration where available, and follow local emergency guidance. PG&E separately directs customers who rely on electricity for medical needs to its Medical Baseline information in connection with Public Safety Power Shutoff planning.

Finish verification and test the setup

  1. Confirm the destination. Check that the saved address, account, meter, phone number, and email all match the location you want monitored.
  2. Complete every confirmation. Reply to confirmation texts and verify email links. CenterPoint specifically requires each text recipient to reply before receiving alerts.
  3. Review categories. Make sure the switches for outage detection, restoration updates, planned work, or safety alerts reflect your needs.
  4. Save a management path. Record where to change contacts or stop messages. Common text commands are provider-specific; for example, Con Edison and National Grid list STOP, but that does not make it universal.
  5. Check your phone’s settings. Allow notifications, avoid blocking the utility’s number, and ensure that battery-saver or spam filters do not suppress important messages.
  6. Recheck after a move or contact change. Update the profile whenever your address, mobile number, email, or household notification needs changes.

Troubleshoot alerts that do not arrive

The signup page rejects your account

Re-enter the identifier exactly as printed on the bill, including leading zeroes if shown. Confirm that you selected the electric account rather than a gas, water, or former service account. If the provider asks for a meter number, use the number from the linked electric meter, not a landlord’s internal property label.

A confirmation text never arrives

Check that the phone number includes the correct country and area code, that short-code messages are not blocked, and that your carrier permits the service. Return to the utility’s official preference page rather than replying to an unfamiliar message. For programs that require an individual reply, each additional recipient must complete the step separately.

You receive updates for the wrong outage

Open the profile or map subscription and verify the service address. This can happen after a move, when a household has multiple properties, or when an address-based map signup was made for a neighboring outage marker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You received one outage update but nothing later

Check whether the route was a one-event map subscription. PG&E, for example, requires a new map signup for future outages after the current event is restored. Also check whether restoration updates are a separate preference from the initial outage notification.

Messages arrive too late or stop during an event

Outage communications depend on the provider’s detection systems, network connectivity, and the condition of local telecommunications infrastructure. Check the utility’s outage map directly, keep more than one contact channel enabled when practical, and do not rely on an alert as proof that service is safe to approach or that power has been fully de-energized.

Fees, privacy, and safe account management

Several utilities warn that carrier message or data rates may apply to text alerts. Review your mobile plan and the provider’s terms before enrolling multiple numbers. If you no longer want messages, use the utility’s documented preference screen or opt-out instruction rather than blocking every number; blocking can also prevent important restoration or safety notices.

Use a unique password for the utility account, enable multifactor authentication when offered, and sign in by typing the official web address or using the provider’s verified app. An outage-alert signup should not require unrelated purchases, cryptocurrency payments, remote-control software, or a password for your email account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose between two available routes

If your utility offers both a portal and a map, or both text and an app, score each option against the same questions:

  • Does it follow the exact service address?
  • Can a renter, caregiver, or other non-account holder use it?
  • Does it cover one current outage or future events as well?
  • Does it include planned work and safety events, or only unplanned outages?
  • Will it provide an estimated restoration time, progress updates, and a restored notice?
  • Can you add household members and remove old contacts easily?
  • Does it require confirmation, an account identifier, or an app installation?
  • Are carrier message or data charges possible?

Choose the route that matches both your eligibility and the way you actually monitor communications. A map subscription that expires after one event is useful for immediate awareness but is not a replacement for a standing account preference.

What outage alerts can—and cannot—tell you

An alert can indicate that the utility detected a problem, provide an estimate, report an update, or announce restoration. It may also identify a cause or affected area when that information is available. The provider controls the timing, wording, and scope of each message, so an estimate is not a guarantee and silence is not proof that a circuit is operating normally.

For immediate danger such as a downed line, fire, medical emergency, or unsafe structure, follow emergency services and utility safety instructions instead of waiting for an alert. Keep a separate household outage plan for transportation, medication, refrigeration, communications, and backup power; enrollment only establishes a notification channel.
