Inspect nearby trim and siding too, and leave openings intended for drainage or ventilation unobstructed.
Where to look for insect entry points
Inspect each closed window and exterior door from both indoors and outdoors. Insects can enter through a small defect in the frame, screen, threshold, or a nearby building joint, then appear to be coming from the opening itself.

- Check the seams where the frame meets trim and where trim meets siding, especially corners and joints.
- At doors, inspect the latch edge, the meeting edges of double doors, and the bottom edge.
- At windows, check the meeting rails and the edges where the sash closes against the frame.
- Look for cracked, missing, or peeling caulk; compressed, brittle, or separated weatherstripping; torn or loose screen material; and daylight around a closed door.
- Extend the inspection to nearby siding transitions, fascia, vents, utility openings, and the edges of window air conditioners.
These adjacent openings can be the actual route even when insects are noticed near a window or door. Before filling any opening, determine whether it is meant to provide drainage or ventilation.

How to check for gaps
Use a flashlight
Darken the room and ask someone outside to shine a flashlight around the closed window or door. Light visible indoors points to a gap worth examining. Check the entire perimeter, not just the spot where you saw an insect.

Check for moving air
Move a strip of tissue paper near a suspect seam and watch for movement, particularly on a windy day. A flashlight or tissue check can reveal an opening or air leakage, but neither identifies the insect species nor proves that every leak is an insect route.
Choose the repair for the kind of opening
| Opening or defect | Suitable repair | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Crack in a stationary frame-to-wall seam | Caulk labeled for the materials and exposure | Remove failed caulk and follow the product directions for surface preparation. Apply to a clean, dry surface in a continuous bead that fills the gap. |
| Edge where a window or door moves against its frame | Suitable weatherstripping | It should contact the closed unit without preventing normal opening and closing. Do not bridge a moving joint with caulk. |
| Gap beneath an exterior door | Compatible door sweep or threshold adjustment or replacement | Look for wear, misalignment, or daylight at the bottom when the door is closed. |
| Torn, loose, or missing screen material | Screen repair or replacement | Secure loose edges and restore missing or damaged mesh; ordinary mesh does not exclude every insect. |
| Large or unusual opening | Material suitable for the substrate and exposure, if the opening is not functional | Identify the opening’s purpose first. Preserve intended ventilation and drainage paths. |
For cracks around windows and doors, Kentucky Extension names silicone or acrylic latex caulk; UC IPM also lists silicone, silicone-latex caulk, or foam sealant for insect openings. The right product depends on the materials and exposure, so follow its label rather than choosing by category alone.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Screen repairs have limits
Repair or replace a screen that is torn, loose, or missing, but do not assume ordinary window screen mesh is a perfect barrier. NC State Extension says adult brown marmorated stink bugs can pass through holes as small as 3 by 7 millimeters. That measurement is specific to this pest and should not be treated as a threshold for all insects.

When to seal: account for the pest and region
Sealing is useful as part of a general exclusion plan, but timing guidance can be pest-specific. NC State Extension’s brown marmorated stink bug FAQ advises against sealing in fall, winter, or early spring because bugs may already be sheltering inside; it recommends allowing them to leave in spring and sealing before their return in late August. This is regional guidance for that species, not a universal schedule. For other insects or climates, follow locally relevant extension advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If insects keep appearing
Sealing likely access points can reduce entry, but it cannot guarantee a pest-free home or address insects brought inside by other means. If many insects remain after you repair obvious openings, identify the insect and seek locally relevant extension guidance rather than assuming every sighting traces back to a window or door gap.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- [Newly upgraded mesh adhesive]: The upgraded mesh adhesive ensures the longest adhesion, is easy to operate, and is highly prone to peeling and sticking. Moreover, the presence of grid lines can ensure that the adhesive is firmly attached to the strip without leaving any traces
- [Flexible variability]: It is soft and larger, larger than the common foam strips on the market. Random cutting has more flexible usability, no longer worrying about gaps that are too large to fill, waterproof and thermal insulation, ensuring comfort for families
- [100% EVA material]: Compared with silicone and EPDM materials on the market, silicone has higher density, better toughness, longer lifespan, and relatively strong temperature resistance. Raw materials are more expensive, ensuring quality while also being more aesthetically pleasing
- [Multiple application scenarios]: Doors/windows/ventilation openings/air conditioners/refrigerators/refrigerators/cars/RVs/table corners/sofa legs/trays/machine tools/garages, there are only places you can't think of, there are no places it can't use
- [Multi purpose]: sealing/anti-collision/shaking/anti friction/anti-collision/protecting table corners/floor mats/insulation/sound insulation/light blocking, super strong adhesion suitable for various places, replacing old sealing strips is also a good choice
