Where to look for free open-world RPGs on PC
Use the store’s own catalog to find candidates, then verify each candidate on its product page. Store categories and promotional pages are discovery tools, not a complete or definitive catalog of games that meet all three criteria—free, open-world, and RPG.

Store catalogs and promotions change. On October 4, 2026, Epic’s official free-games page displayed Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, and Once Human. Treat these as examples visible on that date—not as a complete list, a guarantee of availability in every region, or a definitive ruling on how each reader should classify the game. Check the live listing, tags, description, and requirements before deciding.

Free-to-play
A free-to-play game can be downloaded and played without an upfront purchase, but it may offer optional paid content. Steam’s explanation of its free-to-play category says no subscription or credit card is required to download and play; check the specific game’s listing for its purchase options and terms. Temporary giveaway
A giveaway is a promotion, not necessarily a free-to-play release. Epic’s free-games page presents both free-to-play titles and free-game promotions, so read the offer’s dates and conditions. Demo or other limited access
Do not assume a free download includes the full game. Read the product page for terms such as demo, trial, or limited-time access, and check whether the price shown is for the full game or an add-on. If the store page is unclear, do not rely on a third-party mirror to fill in the details.

A safe way to find and install a candidate
- Search in a known store. Look inside Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG rather than beginning with a search result promising a “free full download.” Use category or tag filters as a starting point, not proof that the result fits your criteria.
- Open the game’s own listing. Confirm its current price and whether it is free-to-play, a promotion, a demo, or another limited offer. Check the listed publisher, PC support, system requirements, and regional availability.
- Install from an official route. Use the store’s client or a download route that the game’s publisher identifies on its official site. Check the domain carefully: an advertisement, forum post, social message, or download mirror does not establish that a site is authorized.
- Keep security protections on. Keep your operating system and antivirus protection updated. Stop if an installer tells you to disable protection, requests unexpected permissions, or comes from a cracked-game site. - Pause at an unfamiliar-file warning. Verify the download source and publisher before deciding what to do. Microsoft explains that a SmartScreen reputation warning is not, by itself, a verdict that a file is malware; it is a reason to take care. A missing warning is not proof that a download is safe. If an Epic-installed game has damaged files
For a game installed through Epic Games Launcher, Epic Support’s repair route is Library → game menu → Manage → Verify.
