Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with Find My before buying anything. On your iPhone, open Find My, tap Devices, choose your AirPods 4, and follow the map. If the earbuds are separated, Find My may let you choose the left or right earbud independently. When the missing piece is nearby and online, you can usually play a sound and, on supported combinations of AirPods and iPhone, use Find Nearby. If recovery fails, Apple sells replacement earbuds and charging cases, but you must match the exact AirPods 4 variant and case before ordering.
Do not assume that a map pin is live, that every AirPods 4 model has identical Find My controls, or that any physically similar case will pair. The status shown in Find My, the model name, the side you need and the regional service quote all matter.

What to do first
Find My is the only recovery route that can show where an individual AirPods component was last detected. It may display a current position, a last known position, or no location at all. The result determines whether searching is worthwhile or whether replacement is the practical next step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Keep the iPhone or iPad that was paired with the AirPods nearby and connected to the internet.
- Open the Find My app and tap Devices.
- Select your AirPods 4 from the device list.
- If the earbuds are apart, choose the missing side when Find My offers separate left and right controls.
- Read the status before using any control. A current map position supports an immediate search; an offline status means the controls may be unavailable.
Apple Support’s guide, “Find your lost AirPods with Find My,” dated September 14, 2026, says that if the AirPods still cannot be found, you can buy a replacement. That is the correct sequence: check every recovery option first, then order only the missing component.

Make a quick search record
Before leaving the map, note whether the marker is current or labeled as a last known location, which side is selected, and whether the case is included. A screenshot can help if you later contact support, especially when a replacement order asks you to distinguish a left earbud, right earbud or case. Refresh the listing after checking the obvious places, but do not interpret a stationary marker as proof that the component has not moved.
Use the map, sound and nearby finding
When the map shows a useful location
Use the map marker to decide where to look. If it points to a home, vehicle or workplace, go to that place and refresh Find My as you move closer. For a location that is not nearby, tap Get Directions; this opens the displayed position in Maps so you can plan the trip.
Search methodically around the marker rather than only at its center. Check the route between the last place you used the AirPods and the displayed location, then look in pockets, bags, bedding, sofa gaps, car-seat rails and other places where a small earbud can settle. If the marker covers a public or unfamiliar place, use Get Directions and consider whether returning is practical before spending time on a stale location.
Play a sound when the AirPod or case is close
With the AirPods selected, tap Play Sound when that option appears. Listen for the beeps and check soft surfaces, pockets, bags, car seats and the area under furniture. Sound is useful only while the relevant component is online and able to communicate with Find My. If the missing earbud is inside a closed case, the available controls can differ from those for an exposed earbud.
Pause other audio and move quietly while listening. A sound command may take a moment to reach the component. If you selected the left or right side separately, make sure you are listening for the side that is actually missing; sending a command to the earbud you still have will not locate the lost one.
Use Find Nearby when it appears
Some AirPods and iPhone combinations show Find Nearby. Follow the on-screen direction and distance changes rather than relying only on the map pin, which can cover a wider area. Apple does not promise this control for every AirPods 4 and iPhone combination, so use the options actually shown for your hardware.
Nearby finding is a search aid, not a guarantee that the component is in the exact spot indicated by the first arrow. Walk slowly, check the floor and nearby surfaces, and rescan if the direction changes. If the option disappears, the component may have gone offline or the connection may no longer be available.

Understand “Offline” and “No location found”
Find My may label the AirPods Offline or show No location found. Apple identifies several possible reasons: the item is out of Bluetooth range, its battery needs charging, or it has not connected to the Find My network. In that state, the app may retain a last known location, but Play Sound and Find Nearby cannot work until the component comes online.

Do not treat the last known marker as proof that the AirPod or case is still there. It is a starting point for a physical search, not a live position. Check the location again later; Find My may notify you if the AirPods reconnect. If the marker never updates and no sound option returns, move to the replacement decision rather than repeatedly searching the same map.
Offline status does not by itself prove theft, permanent loss or hardware failure. A depleted battery and distance from the network can produce the same result. Conversely, an old location should not be used as evidence that a replacement is incompatible; compatibility is determined by the model and account status, not by the last map update.
Can you mark a lost AirPods 4 component?
Apple’s current instructions distinguish between AirPods 4 models. The guide specifically lists separate lost marking for AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). It does not list the same per-component option for standard AirPods 4. The same guide also identifies AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case and AirPods Pro 2 and later as supporting separate marking of each earbud and the case.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Therefore, select your exact model in Find My and use only the options displayed there. Do not assume that a standard AirPods 4 has the same lost-marking controls as the ANC version. If a marking option is absent, continue with the map, sound and replacement steps instead of trying to force the feature through another menu.
Finding AirPods without an Apple device
Apple says Find My can also be accessed at iCloud.com/find when you do not have an Apple device available. The web experience can have fewer controls than the Find My app, so a sound or nearby-finding command available on an iPhone may not appear in the browser.
Find My network availability can vary by country or region. A missing feature on the web page or in the app may therefore reflect regional availability rather than a fault with your AirPods. If you later regain access to an iPhone or iPad, check the device in the Find My app as well.
Use the Apple Account associated with the AirPods when signing in. If the AirPods do not appear in the device list, verify the account before concluding that Find My has no record. The web page is useful for checking a map when you are away from your normal device, but the iPhone app is generally the better place to see model-specific controls and complete setup.
Recovery or replacement: choose the route that fits
There is no official recovery-rate or universal replacement-price statistic for AirPods 4. The practical choice depends on whether Find My has a recent, reachable location and whether the local replacement quote is acceptable.

| Route | Best indication | What you can do | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recover with Find My | A current map position, online status, or a sound/nearby control | Navigate to the marker, play a sound, or follow Find Nearby | Offline components may show only a stale last location and cannot play sound |
| Buy a replacement | The component remains missing, offline, damaged, or is not worth another search | Order one earbud or a compatible charging case through Apple’s regional support process | Price, stock and service fees vary by country, provider and inspection; no universal figure is established |
Replacing one missing side is usually less disruptive than replacing a complete set, but the replacement must belong to the same generation and model family. A case that fits physically can still be incompatible electronically, so confirm the model before paying.
A practical decision checklist
- Keep searching: Find My shows a recent or clearly reachable location, or Play Sound or Find Nearby responds.
- Search once more later: the item is offline but has a useful last known location and may reconnect when charged or back in range.
- Request a quote: the item remains missing, the map never updates, or the component is damaged.
- Order now: you need working earbuds and the regional price, delivery terms and compatibility are acceptable.
These routes are not mutually exclusive. You can order a replacement and still check Find My if the original later comes online, but do not delay an urgent replacement indefinitely for an item with no recent location.
How to order a replacement AirPods 4 earbud or case
Use Apple’s regional support flow
Apple’s AirPods Support hub states: “If you can’t find your missing AirPod or the charging case using Find My, you can purchase a replacement.” Open the support route for your country or region and select the missing item: left earbud, right earbud or charging case. The available order path and quote are regional.
Apple’s UK repair information explains that estimates can depend on inspection and that authorised service providers may set their own fees. Treat that as a service-policy example, not a worldwide price. Before confirming an order, check the amount shown for your location, whether tax or shipping is included, and whether the seller is Apple or an authorised provider.
Check whether the route is a mail-in service, an in-person inspection or a direct replacement order. Keep the quote, order confirmation and any inspection terms. If a provider cannot identify the exact AirPods 4 variant from the information supplied, ask for clarification before paying rather than accepting a generic “AirPods” part.
Confirm the exact variant
AirPods 4 are sold in more than one configuration, including a standard model and a model with ANC. Charging-case features differ between configurations. Read the model information shown in your iPhone’s Bluetooth or Find My details, compare it with the label on the remaining case or earbud, and select the matching replacement description.
- Verify whether your original set is standard AirPods 4 or AirPods 4 with ANC.
- Specify left or right earbud; an earbud is not interchangeable by side.
- If the case is missing, verify the case type intended for your AirPods 4 model.
- Check the current local quote and delivery or service terms at checkout.
- If buying a previously owned component, confirm that its former owner can remove it from their Apple Account.
The available sources do not establish a universal price or a particular marketplace listing. Inventory, seller authenticity and fees can change, so do not rely on an old screenshot or a listing that omits the model variant.

Questions to answer before checkout
- Am I replacing the left earbud, right earbud or charging case?
- Is the original set standard AirPods 4 or AirPods 4 with ANC?
- Does the replacement description name the same generation and case family?
- Is the quoted amount final, or can inspection, shipping or provider fees be added?
- For a used part, will the previous owner remove it from their Apple Account?
Writing down these answers prevents the most common ordering error: buying a part that looks right in a photograph but belongs to a different model or remains linked to somebody else.

Set up a replacement AirPods 4 component
Apple provides model-specific replacement instructions for AirPods 4 of all models and for a replacement charging case. The key preparation step is a 20-minute charge with both earbuds in the case.
- Put both AirPods in the charging case. If you replaced the case, place the original earbud and the replacement earbud in that case.
- Connect the case to power.
- Close the lid and leave the case charging for 20 minutes.
- Open the lid and check the status light. Apple’s instructions require the light to flash white before pairing can continue.
- If the light is not flashing white, double-tap the front of the case at the stages specified in Apple’s current setup instructions until the light flashes amber and then white. Follow the timing and lid position shown for your model rather than improvising a different reset sequence.
- When the light flashes white, close the lid while it is still flashing.
- Open the lid again near the iPhone or other compatible device and follow the remaining on-screen pairing steps.
The 20-minute charge is not optional troubleshooting trivia: it gives the replacement and the existing component time to initialise together. Starting the pairing sequence immediately after inserting a replacement can leave the case in an incomplete state.
Keep the original and replacement parts together during this process. Do not add an unidentified recovered earbud to the case while setup is underway, because a different generation or account association can trigger a mismatch and make the status harder to diagnose. Follow the current Apple sequence for your model if the light behaves differently from the steps above.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix an “AirPods Mismatch” alert
An AirPods Mismatch alert means Find My or the pairing process detects that the pieces do not belong together. Apple identifies three common causes: the earbuds are different generations, a component belongs to another person, or a part remains associated with another Apple Account.
Different generations or variants
Check the model information for both earbuds and the case. A replacement intended for another generation, or for a different AirPods 4 configuration, may not complete setup even if it fits in the case. Stop and confirm the order details before attempting repeated resets.
A previously owned component
Ask the previous owner to remove the earbud or case from their Apple Account before you try to pair it. Without that removal, the component can remain linked to the other account and continue producing the mismatch warning.
The correct parts still will not pair
Put both earbuds in the case, connect it to power and repeat Apple’s 20-minute charging and white-light setup sequence. If the alert remains, use Apple Support or an authorised provider with the model details and the replacement receipt; do not assume that another reset will make incompatible hardware work.
What happens to the missing component after replacement?
A replacement does not make the missing earbud or case reappear in Find My. If the original component later comes online, it may still appear as a separate or outdated entry until it is removed or reconfigured. Keep the replacement and original parts clearly separated while you test the new setup, and avoid mixing an unknown recovered component into the case until its model and account status are confirmed.

If Find My sends a later notification that the lost part is online, revisit the map and use the same sound or nearby controls. Recovery remains possible after ordering a replacement, but the replacement process should not be delayed while waiting for an offline item with no recent location.
Common mistakes that waste time or money
- Buying before checking the side: left and right earbuds are separate replacement choices.
- Assuming all AirPods 4 cases are identical: standard and ANC configurations can have different case requirements.
- Treating an old pin as a live tracker: an offline item may show only its last known location.
- Expecting every control everywhere: Find Nearby, sound and lost marking depend on the model, connection, device and region.
- Skipping the 20-minute charge: replacement setup requires the specified charging and light sequence.
- Ignoring account ownership: a used component linked to another Apple Account can produce an AirPods Mismatch alert.
- Trusting an unspecified marketplace listing: inventory, authenticity and compatibility are not established by a product photo alone.
Prevent another single-earbud loss
- Leave Find My enabled for the AirPods while they are paired to your Apple Account.
- When storing the earbuds, close the case so both sides remain together and can charge.
- After travel, check Find My before leaving a car, hotel room or meeting space.
- Record the model information for the earbuds and case; it makes a future replacement order more accurate.
- Keep receipts and the replacement model description in case an account or mismatch issue requires support.
These habits do not change what Find My can locate, but they reduce the time spent identifying the correct component and make Apple’s replacement setup less error-prone.
When replacement is the sensible endpoint
Choose replacement when Find My shows only an old location, the item remains offline after reasonable checks, the component is damaged, or the local service quote is acceptable compared with the time required for another search. Choose continued recovery when the map is recent and reachable or when Play Sound or Find Nearby responds. In either case, use the exact model and regional Apple support instructions; AirPods 4 compatibility and service terms are not universal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace only one lost AirPods 4 earbud?
Yes. Apple’s support route allows a replacement left or right earbud when the missing component cannot be found. Select the correct side and match the exact AirPods 4 variant before ordering.
Can I replace the AirPods 4 charging case by itself?
Yes. Apple says a replacement charging case can be purchased. Confirm that it is intended for your standard AirPods 4 or AirPods 4 with ANC configuration.
Why does Find My show only the last location?
The component may be offline, out of Bluetooth range, or in need of charging. Find My can retain the last known location, but Play Sound and Find Nearby cannot work until it comes online.
Do standard AirPods 4 support separate lost marking?
Apple’s current guide specifically lists separate lost marking for AirPods 4 with ANC, not standard AirPods 4. Use only the options displayed for your exact model.

What causes an AirPods Mismatch alert?
Common causes include different generations, a component belonging to another person, or a part still associated with another Apple Account. The prior owner must remove a used component from their account.
Can I use Find My without an iPhone?
Apple says you can use Find My at iCloud.com/find, although the web experience may offer fewer controls. Find My network availability can also vary by country or region.
The Bottom Line
Check Find My first: select the missing side, use the map, Play Sound or Find Nearby when available, and treat Offline or No location found as a limit rather than a live result. If recovery fails, order the exact left, right or case replacement through your regional Apple support route, verify the standard-versus-ANC variant and local quote, then complete the 20-minute charging and pairing sequence.
