To find and remove connected apps, sign in to your bank through its official website or mobile app and open Security, Privacy, Data sharing, Linked apps, or Third-party access. Review every listed connection, check the accounts and permissions it has, and revoke anything you no longer recognize or use. If the connection was made through Plaid, also check Plaid Portal. Removing access stops future sharing, but it does not automatically delete copies of data already held by the app, and it does not necessarily cancel payment authorizations.
Menu names and revocation behavior vary by bank, country, and connection method. The instructions below use United States examples from Chase, Bank of America, and Plaid; use your bank’s official help pages if your screens differ.

Where connected-app access is usually listed
There is no universal banking menu. Start inside the bank’s official website or mobile app, not through a link in an email or an unfamiliar message. Look for one or more of these labels:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Security or Security Center
- Privacy or Data sharing
- Linked apps or Connected apps
- Third-party access or Third-party site access
- External services, authorized applications, or account connections
The bank’s control is the authoritative place when it issued the authorization directly. A connection provider such as Plaid may show additional connections, but its list is not guaranteed to include every authorization your bank supports.

Some lists are account-specific. An entry may cover only a checking account, while another covers savings, a credit card, or an investment account. Do not assume that removing one entry disconnects every account you have at the institution.
Step 1: Sign in through the bank’s official channel
- Type the bank’s known web address yourself or open its official mobile app. Avoid signing in from a search advertisement, a message link, or a third-party app’s embedded browser.
- Open your profile, settings, or security area.
- Search for linked applications, data sharing, or third-party access. If the bank provides a settings search box, try each of those terms.
Use the same bank login you normally use, and do not give your credentials to someone claiming to remove an app for you. Plaid’s OAuth model is designed to let you authorize a third party without handing that third party your bank password, but the authorization still needs to be managed through the correct bank or provider control.
Chase example
Chase documents a Linked apps control in its Security & Privacy Center. On the Chase website, sign in and open Security & privacy. In the Chase Mobile app, the documented route is Profile & Settings, then Settings, then Security Center. Chase says customers can review specific apps or websites and remove access to individual connections.
Chase announced a phased rollout of a Data Security Center on September 25, 2026. The announced controls include connected apps, permissions, access duration, linked accounts, and unlinking. Because the rollout is phased, your account may still show the older Security Center or different labels.
Step 2: Inventory every connection before removing it
Do not revoke access solely because an app name looks unfamiliar. First determine whether it is a service you still use, a parent company name for a familiar service, or an old authorization that should be closed.
| Check | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| App or service name | Exact name and any description shown by the bank | Some entries use a legal or platform name rather than the name on your phone. |
| Linked account | Checking, savings, credit card, investment, or other account | You may want to remove one account while keeping another connection. |
| Permissions | Balances, transactions, identity details, account numbers, or other data categories | Read-only data access is different from permission to initiate a payment. |
| Access duration | Any expiration date or continuing-access wording | A connection that remains active indefinitely deserves a deliberate review. |
| Recognition and use | Whether you opened the account and still need it | Unused connections create unnecessary exposure and confusion during fraud checks. |
Take a screenshot or write down the entries you plan to remove before confirming. That record helps you identify which service to contact if you later need a deletion request or a payment investigation. Record the date, the affected account, the permissions shown, and any confirmation number. If the bank presents separate checkboxes for accounts, note exactly which boxes you selected.
Step 3: Revoke access in the bank’s security or privacy controls
- Open the entry for the app or website you want to disconnect.
- Confirm which bank account and permissions are attached.
- Choose Remove access, Unlink, Revoke, or the equivalent control.
- Approve the confirmation prompt. If the bank asks you to choose individual accounts, select only the accounts you want disconnected.
- Return to the list and verify that the entry is removed or marked inactive.
If you still use the service for another account, avoid a blanket removal when the bank offers account-level choices. Conversely, removing only one account may leave the same app connected to another account. Review the list again after making a change.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that deleting the app from your phone performed these steps. Uninstalling a mobile app removes local software; it is not evidence that the bank or connection provider canceled the authorization.

Bank of America example
Bank of America’s Plaid information-sharing terms direct customers to sign in to online banking or the mobile app and choose Third Party Site Access from Security Center to review or revoke access. The terms warn that a revocation handled with Plaid may take time before data sharing fully stops. That path and timing are specific to the described Bank of America flow; do not treat them as a universal rule for other banks.
Step 4: Disconnect a Plaid connection in Plaid Portal
Plaid Portal can list and disconnect many connections made through Plaid. It is a useful second check when the bank’s own list does not explain an app’s connection.
- Sign in to Plaid Portal using the identity details associated with your Plaid connections.
- Open Overview to see supported connections.
- Select the app or service you want to stop sharing with.
- Open Manage connections.
- Choose Disconnect app.
- Select the financial institution, then confirm the disconnection.
Plaid’s Consumer Help Center says Portal supports most connections, but certain newer product experiences may require a privacy request or another support route. If the app is absent, or the disconnect option is unavailable, continue with the bank’s security or data-sharing controls and the app’s own connected-account settings.

A bank may have a direct authorization that does not appear in Portal, and a Portal entry may identify the connector without showing every permission available at the bank. Use the details from both lists to determine whether you removed the intended connection.
When a Plaid connection uses bank-authorized OAuth
Plaid’s OAuth guidance describes OAuth as a way for you to grant a third party data access without giving that third party your bank credentials directly. The authorization still belongs to the institution or flow that issued it. Plaid specifically says that a user who wants to revoke or limit Plaid access to a Chase account must use the Chase Security Center. In that situation, changing a password is not established as a universal replacement for revoking the authorization.
What to do when the connection does not appear
A missing entry does not prove that no access exists. Work through these locations in order:
- Recheck the bank’s Security, Privacy, Data sharing, and Third-party access pages on both the website and mobile app. Some banks expose different controls on each platform.
- Open the app or service itself and look for Connected accounts, Bank connections, Financial institutions, or Manage data. Remove the institution there if the app provides that control.
- Check the connection provider’s portal, such as Plaid Portal, if you recognize the provider from the sign-in or consent screen.
- Contact the bank through the phone number or secure-message function shown on its official site. Ask which authorization currently permits the named app to access the specific account.
- Contact the app’s support team if you need confirmation that its connector has been disabled or its stored copy deleted.
The correct revocation point depends on the bank and authorization flow. A connector may be managed by the bank, by a data-access provider, or by the app’s own account system. Keep the app name, institution, account type, and date of the original connection available when you contact support; those details help distinguish similarly named services.
Disconnecting access is not the same as deleting stored data
Disconnecting controls future access. It does not automatically erase information the app already downloaded. Plaid’s help guidance states that disconnecting an app stops future data sharing only.

If you want the app to delete its existing copy, contact the app directly and make a clear deletion request. Identify the account or connection, ask what personal financial data it retains, and request deletion of data no longer required for a legal, security, or service obligation. Keep the confirmation and note any retention explanation the company gives you. A disconnection confirmation alone is not proof that historical balances or transactions were deleted.
Plaid provides a separate process for requests about data held by Plaid. Deleting data from Plaid is distinct from deleting copies held by a third-party app. Plaid may retain some information when permitted or required by law, so a request does not guarantee that every record disappears immediately. If you used more than one app, submit a separate request to each organization holding a copy.
Payment permissions require a separate check
Data access and payment authorization are different controls. An app may be able to read account information, initiate a debit, or do both. Plaid says that deleting an account from Plaid Portal does not remove payment authorization.
- Review the app or merchant’s billing, payment, autopay, or bank-account settings.
- Cancel any payment permission or recurring debit there, following the merchant’s stated cancellation process.
- Check the bank’s payment or transfer controls for a separate authorization, if available.
- If an unauthorized debit appears, contact the bank using the number on its official website or your card and follow its fraud-reporting process.
Do not wait for a data-connection deletion request to resolve a payment dispute. Treat an unfamiliar debit as a transaction issue and report it promptly through the bank’s official channel. Removing a data connection also does not establish that a pending or previously authorized debit was canceled; verify payment status separately.
Verify that removal worked
After revoking a connection, perform a short verification instead of relying only on a success message:
- Refresh the bank’s linked-app or third-party-access list and confirm the entry is gone or inactive.
- Check Plaid Portal if the connection used Plaid and confirm that the app no longer appears as connected.
- Open the app’s connected-account page and remove any remaining institution entry.
- Review recent transactions, scheduled payments, and account alerts for activity you do not recognize.
- Keep the date, time, app name, affected account, and confirmation message in your records.
Some banks or providers may take time to propagate a revocation. If the connection remains visible after the period stated by the bank or provider, contact support and provide the record you kept. Bank of America’s terms specifically caution that a Plaid-related revocation may take time; no single waiting period applies to every institution.
Common problems and the safest response
You deleted the app but it still has access
Reinstalling or deleting phone software does not revoke a bank authorization. Use the bank, provider, and app controls described above.

The connection returns after removal
The app may be reauthorizing automatically, or another account connection may still be active. Remove the institution from the app itself, then check the bank and provider lists again. Contact support if a new authorization appears without your action.
You cannot find a disconnect button in Plaid Portal
The connection may use a newer product experience or require a privacy or support request. Use the bank’s own security controls, then contact Plaid or the app through their official support routes.
You changed your bank password and assumed access ended
Password changes can be a sensible security measure after suspected compromise, but the cited guidance does not establish them as a universal way to revoke third-party authorizations. Confirm the authorization status directly in the bank or provider controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou removed access and a needed app stopped working
Revocation can interrupt budgeting, payment, or account-monitoring features that depend on the connection. Reconnect only through the app and bank screens you recognize, and review the accounts and permissions before approving a new authorization.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How often to review connected apps
Review the list whenever you close a financial app, stop using a budgeting or payment service, change banks, or see a new transaction alert. During a periodic account-security check, focus on connections you do not recognize, links to accounts you no longer use, broad permissions, and access that has no stated end date. Remove only the connection you intend to close so that necessary services continue working.
A useful review separates three questions: Do I recognize and still use this service? Which accounts and information can it access? Can it initiate payments as well as read data? The answers determine whether you should leave the connection, revoke it, request deletion, cancel payment authority, or take all of those actions.
What varies by bank, country, and connection method
The examples above are principally United States consumer flows. Banks in other countries may use different privacy rights, consent screens, retention rules, and menu names. Even within one bank, web and mobile labels can differ, and a newly introduced security center may be rolled out gradually. Use the institution’s current official help documentation when a screen, permission description, or waiting period does not match these examples.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does deleting a banking app from my phone disconnect it from my bank?
No. Uninstalling the phone app removes local software but is not evidence that the bank or connection provider canceled authorization. Revoke access in the bank, provider, or app settings.
Can I remove only one account from a connected app?
Often, yes, if the bank or provider presents account-level choices. Open the connection details and select only the account you intend to disconnect; verify that other needed accounts remain linked.
Will disconnecting Plaid delete my transaction history from the app?
No. Plaid says disconnecting stops future data sharing only. Ask the app directly to delete copies it already holds, and use Plaid’s separate process for data held by Plaid.
Does removing an account in Plaid Portal cancel an automatic payment?
No. Plaid distinguishes data access from payment authorization. Review the merchant’s billing settings and any bank payment controls, and contact the bank promptly about an unauthorized debit.
What if my bank does not list the app?
Check both the bank website and mobile app, the app’s connected-account settings, and a connector portal such as Plaid Portal. If it still is not listed, contact the bank through its official support channel and ask which authorization permits access.
How long does revocation take?
Timing varies. Bank of America’s terms warn that a Plaid-related revocation may take time before sharing fully stops, and other institutions may differ. Keep your confirmation and contact support if the connection remains active beyond the stated period.
Is changing my bank password enough to revoke an app?
Not necessarily. The documented guidance does not establish password changes as a universal replacement for revoking third-party authorization. Confirm the status in the bank or provider’s security controls.

Find connected services in your bank’s official Security, Privacy, Data sharing, or Third-party access settings. Review each account and permission, revoke unwanted access at the bank or connection provider, and check Plaid Portal when applicable. Then separately request deletion of stored data and cancel any payment authorization. Verify the lists and transactions afterward, because menu names and processing times vary.
