How to Find and Reinstall Games You Already Own on Xbox

On an Xbox console, open My games & apps > Full library > Owned Games. On a Windows PC, open the Microsoft Store, go to My Library (or My library > All owned), find the title, and choose the download control. In both cases, use the Microsoft account that made the purchase and confirm that the game supports the device you want to use. The exact options can differ between Xbox, Windows PCs, and individual game listings.

Choose the right library for your device

Xbox keeps your digital purchases associated with your Microsoft account, but the place where you retrieve them depends on where you want to play. The console library is the quickest route for an Xbox installation or an eligible stream. Windows PC installations are handled through Microsoft Store.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Route Where to look What it lets you do Important limitation
Xbox console My games & apps > Full library > Owned Games Locate titles attached to the signed-in account and, where supported, start streaming an owned game The current Xbox Wire guidance confirms the library path for streaming, but does not document one universal reinstall button sequence for every dashboard version
Windows PC Microsoft Store > My Library or My library > All owned Find Microsoft Store purchases and select the download control to install or reinstall them A title available on one PC, or on Xbox, may not be available on another PC or device

Microsoft’s download instructions cover software purchased directly from Microsoft, including Xbox games, and explain that it can be downloaded, installed, or reinstalled from the Store library. See Microsoft’s Find and install your Microsoft downloads from Microsoft Store guide.

You do not need a physical disc, a special cable, or a separate purchase simply to open the owned library and retrieve a digital title. A storage accessory is relevant only when the device lacks room for the installation. Likewise, do not buy the game again until you have checked the account, edition, and supported device.

Find an owned game on an Xbox console

Open the Owned Games list

  1. Sign in to the Xbox profile that purchased the game, or that is entitled to use it through the relevant account arrangement.
  2. Open My games & apps from the console dashboard.
  3. Choose Full library.
  4. Open Owned Games.

This is the verified location for the account’s owned-game list. Xbox Wire identifies this path when explaining how to start streaming an owned game from an Xbox console: Xbox April Update: Buy Games with the Xbox App on Mobile, Stream Your Own Game on Console, and More.

If you have a long list, use the dashboard’s available sorting or search controls rather than assuming that a recently deleted game has vanished. The important distinction is between removing the local installation and losing the account entitlement: the library is where you verify what the signed-in account can retrieve.

Start a reinstall when the title is listed

Select the game in Owned Games and use the install or download option shown by your current console interface. Xbox dashboard wording and available actions can vary by title, console generation, and whether the game is compatible with that console. The cited Xbox update establishes where to find the title, not a single controller-button sequence that applies to every reinstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the game opens an information page instead of offering installation, read the listing for its supported device and edition. A listing can represent a console game, a Windows version, or both; those are not automatically interchangeable. If the item is shown as unavailable, record the exact message before changing accounts or buying anything.

When you only want to play without downloading

For supported titles, the console’s Owned Games library can also be used to start streaming. Streaming avoids waiting for a full download and does not consume the same local installation space, but it is conditional: the game, account, region, and service must all be eligible at the time you try it. Do not assume that every owned game has a stream option.

Streaming and reinstalling solve different problems. A stream is useful when storage or download time is the obstacle; an installation is the dependable route when you need a local copy or do not want to rely on an active streaming connection. The presence of a stream control does not establish that a Windows version is included with a console purchase.

Reinstall an owned game on a Windows PC

Use Microsoft Store’s library

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account that bought the game.
  2. Open the Store’s Library or My Library area.
  3. Look through the owned items for the game. Microsoft also documents the path My library > All owned; scroll the list if the title is not immediately visible.
  4. Select the download or install icon beside the game and follow the prompts.

Microsoft describes this library workflow for finding software purchased directly from Microsoft, including games. The instructions are available at Find and install your Microsoft downloads from Microsoft Store and Get trusted apps and games from Microsoft Store.

The Store library is account-specific, so a game purchased through a different Microsoft account will not necessarily appear merely because that account is also used on the same Windows computer. Check the account indicator in the Store itself, not only the account used to sign in to Windows.

If you moved to another PC

Open Microsoft Store, choose My library, then All owned, and scroll to the title. Microsoft’s support guidance specifically recommends this route when an app or game needs to be located on another PC. The item may still be absent if that particular game does not support the new PC.

Moving computers does not change the library path, but it can expose a device-availability difference. Treat the new PC as a compatibility check first: compare the exact product listing and supported device information before concluding that the purchase record is wrong.

Check the Windows device requirement before downloading

Being listed in an account library does not guarantee that a game can be installed on every Windows computer. Microsoft warns that an app available on one PC may not be available on another PC or on Xbox. Open the exact game listing and check the supported device and edition before treating a missing download button as a purchase problem. The platform warning is documented in I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This check also prevents a common mistake: seeing a console title in a cross-device history or account view and assuming that the Windows download is included. Only the listing’s device information and the account’s current entitlement answer that question.

Make sure you are using the purchasing account

The owned list is account-based. If a game you remember buying is missing, the first check is the Microsoft account currently signed in—not the console or PC itself.

  • Compare the signed-in email address with the account used for the original purchase.
  • On Windows, check the account shown in Microsoft Store rather than relying only on the Windows sign-in account.
  • On Xbox, switch to the profile that holds the purchase and reopen Full library > Owned Games.
  • If several Microsoft accounts are used in the household, repeat the check for each account rather than buying the title again.

Microsoft’s support material directs people who cannot find an app or game to the Store library, which makes account verification the sensible first diagnostic step: Trouble pushing an app or game to a device.

Keep the account check separate from the device check. A title can be correctly attached to the account yet unavailable on the particular Xbox or PC. Conversely, a compatible device can still show an empty list when the Store or console is signed into the wrong account.

Understand ownership, subscriptions, and editions

A purchase is not the same as a temporary entitlement

A broad game list can contain items obtained in different ways. A game bought outright is tied to the purchasing account, while a game accessed through a subscription or promotional entitlement may depend on that entitlement remaining active. The available sources do not establish a universal rule for every subscription catalog, so check the title’s current listing and the account’s purchase or subscription status before assuming that every library item is permanently owned.

When a title appears with a subscription-related message instead of a download control, do not treat that message as evidence that the original purchase disappeared. Verify which account obtained access and whether the current listing identifies a purchase, subscription, or other entitlement.

Do not assume console and PC rights are identical

Some titles have separate console and Windows versions, and some listings support more than one device. The presence of a game in your Xbox library does not by itself prove that a Windows installation is included. Conversely, a Microsoft Store PC listing may not represent an Xbox-installable version. Use the exact listing’s supported-device information to determine which edition you can install.

Watch for edition differences

Standard, deluxe, and bundled editions can appear as separate products or as one listing with different included content. If the game appears but the expected add-ons do not, confirm that you are selecting the edition associated with the original purchase. Reinstalling the base game does not necessarily reinstall separately listed add-ons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the product name carefully before selecting a download. Similar names can identify a different platform, a bundle, or a separate edition, and installing the wrong listing will not change the entitlement attached to the account.

Download or stream: which route fits the problem?

Need Prefer a download when… Consider streaming when…
Fastest start You can wait for the installation and have sufficient local storage The title is eligible and you want to begin without a full download
Offline play You need the installed game to work without a streaming connection Streaming is unsuitable because it depends on ongoing service and network availability
Storage space You have enough free space for the game and updates You want to avoid using local installation space and the game offers an eligible stream
Platform flexibility The exact edition supports your Xbox or Windows device The service explicitly marks the title as streamable for your account and device

Streaming is an alternative, not proof of ownership across every platform. Xbox’s April 2025 update documents streaming an owned game from the console’s Owned Games section; availability remains title- and service-dependent.

Cloud-playable games on a Windows PC

Xbox announced a cloud-playable filter and access to cloud-playable console games in the Xbox PC app in July 2025. That announcement was made for Xbox Insiders, so it should not be treated as a guarantee that the same filter or rollout is available to every PC user today. If the feature is present in your app, use the game’s own “cloud playable” indication and the account’s current eligibility rather than assuming that all owned console games can be streamed on Windows. The announcement is here: Now Available for Xbox Insiders: Your Cross-Device Play History and Easier Access to Your Cloud-Playable Console Games on PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This PC cloud feature is distinct from finding a Microsoft Store download. A cloud-playable label can offer a way to start a supported console game without installing its Windows files, but it does not convert an incompatible listing into a native PC installation.

What to do when the game is missing

It is absent from the library

  1. Sign out of the Store or Xbox profile and sign back in with the purchasing account.
  2. On Xbox, return to My games & apps > Full library > Owned Games.
  3. On Windows, open Microsoft Store My library > All owned and scroll the complete list.
  4. Search for the exact title and check whether a different edition or platform listing is being shown.
  5. Review the title’s current Store page for supported devices and the account’s purchase or subscription status.

Microsoft’s “I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store” guidance emphasizes that availability can differ between devices. A missing item on one PC or Xbox therefore does not, by itself, prove that the purchase record has disappeared.

The game is listed but there is no install option

  • Read the listing’s device-compatibility information; the title may not support the device you are using.
  • Check whether the listing represents a subscription entitlement rather than an outright purchase.
  • Confirm that you are viewing the same edition that was purchased.
  • If the title is eligible for streaming but not local installation on that device, use the stream option where the interface offers it.

Capture the wording of any unavailable, incompatible, or subscription message. The message helps distinguish a platform limitation from an account problem and gives support a precise starting point.

The download will not start because of storage

Free enough space for the base game and any required updates, then retry the install from the same library entry. Storage accessories are not required to find an owned game; they are relevant only if the console or PC cannot accommodate the installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game appears on one device but not another

Treat this as a compatibility question first. Microsoft explicitly notes that an app available on one PC may not be available on another PC or Xbox. Verify the exact game listing, supported device, and edition before troubleshooting the account further.

A quick decision checklist

  • Xbox console: My games & apps > Full library > Owned Games.
  • Windows PC: Microsoft Store > My Library, then My library > All owned if needed.
  • Account: use the Microsoft account that made the purchase or currently holds the entitlement.
  • Platform: confirm the title supports the Xbox or Windows device you are using.
  • Edition: distinguish the purchased edition from other versions and add-on listings.
  • Alternative: use streaming only when the title and service mark it as eligible.
  • Storage: free local space only when you choose a download and the device requires it.
  • Cost: finding and reinstalling an owned digital game uses the platform’s existing library; no separate product is required for that workflow.

When to contact Microsoft support

Contact support after you have confirmed the purchasing account, checked the complete owned list, and verified device compatibility. Include the exact game title and edition, the device where it is missing, and whether the Store shows a purchase, subscription entitlement, download control, or compatibility message. Those details distinguish an account-access problem from a platform-availability problem and reduce the chance of purchasing the same game again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are my owned games on Xbox?

On the console, open My games & apps, choose Full library, and open Owned Games. That is the verified library path for locating titles attached to the signed-in account.

How do I reinstall an Xbox game I deleted?

Sign in with the account that purchased it, open My games & apps > Full library > Owned Games, select the title, and use the install or download option shown by your current dashboard. The exact button wording can vary by title and console version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a game I bought missing from Xbox or Microsoft Store?

First verify the Microsoft account used for the purchase. Then check the complete Owned Games or My library > All owned list, search for another edition, and review the title’s supported-device and current entitlement information.

Can I install every Xbox purchase on Windows?

No. Console and Windows versions can be separate, and Microsoft warns that availability can differ between PCs and Xbox. Check the exact listing for supported devices instead of assuming cross-platform installation.

Can I play an owned Xbox game without reinstalling it?

Supported titles may offer streaming from the console’s Owned Games library. Streaming is conditional on the game, account, region, and service, so it is not available for every owned title.

What does My library > All owned do on another PC?

It shows the Microsoft Store items associated with the signed-in account so you can locate a game moved to another computer. The game still must support that particular PC before a download control appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a subscription game permanently owned?

Not necessarily. A subscription or promotional entitlement can depend on its current status. Check the title listing and the account’s purchase or subscription information before treating it as an outright purchase.

Do I need a storage accessory or another paid product to reinstall?

No extra product is required to find an owned digital game. Consider additional storage only if the device lacks enough free space for the local installation.

The Bottom Line

Use My games & apps > Full library > Owned Games on Xbox, or Microsoft Store My Library > All owned on Windows. If the title is missing, verify the purchasing account, edition, entitlement, and supported device before buying it again; stream only when the game and service mark that option as eligible.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
