Product keys and gifts use different redemption procedures, so identify which type of “free game” you have before trying to add it.
How do I find free games on Steam?
Steam’s Free to Play Store category is the authoritative starting point for the current catalog. Steam Support directs users to that category because its contents change as games are added, removed, or have their business model changed. Open Steam Support’s Free to play games on Steam article and use the Store link there, or navigate to the Free to Play section in the Steam Store.

Use the live category instead of an old “complete list”
A static article or video can become inaccurate when a game leaves the category, changes from free to paid, becomes unavailable in a region, or changes its platform support. Treat the live Steam category as the list to check at the time you want to install something. A game that was free in a previous promotion is not automatically a permanent free-to-play title.
Check the individual Store page
Open the game’s Store page before adding it. Confirm the current price or free-to-play designation, supported operating systems, and any requirements or restrictions shown for that title. The category identifies discovery options; the game’s own page is where Steam presents the details that determine whether your computer and account can use it.

- Price status: Make sure the page currently offers free access rather than a paid edition, trial, demo, or a temporary promotion.
- Platform support: Check whether the game supports your operating system and, where relevant, your Steam Deck or other target device.
- Game-specific rules: Read any age, regional, account, online-service, or other restrictions displayed on the page.
- Optional content: Look for information about in-game purchases so you understand what may cost money after installation.
How do I redeem a free game on Steam?
For a genuine Free to Play Store listing, redemption is the normal free download or play flow on that game’s Store page. Steam says these games can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card. The exact control label and the screens that follow can change, so use the current action shown by Steam rather than relying on an old button name.
- Sign in to the intended Steam account. If you use several accounts, verify the account name before proceeding. Ownership and Library access are attached to that account.
- Open the game’s Store page. You can reach it from the live Free to Play category or by searching the Store, then verify that its current access is free to play.
- Start the free download or play action. Select the free action presented on the page and follow Steam’s prompts in the client or browser. If Steam asks you to open the client, allow it and continue there.
- Let Steam add the title to your account. A free-to-play listing does not require a checkout, wallet top-up, or payment card. If a payment screen appears, stop and check that you opened the intended edition and that the title is still free.
- Open the Library entry. After the title has been added, use the Steam Library to install it or launch it, depending on what the client displays.
- Review the game’s own first-run requirements. Some titles require an online connection, a separate game account, age verification, or acceptance of additional terms. Those requirements are separate from Steam charging you for access.
What Steam’s definition of “free” includes
Steam Support defines the category this way: “Free to play games are available to download for free and can be played without a subscription or a credit card.” That describes access to the game itself. A title can still offer optional items, cosmetic content, expansions, or other purchases inside the game. Steam’s FAQ says those purchases are not required to play and progress in free-to-play games.
Do not buy a Steam gift card or add wallet funds merely to claim a free-to-play listing. Spending is optional unless a particular game imposes a separate, clearly stated requirement for a feature or service.
Free-to-play listing, product key, or gift: choose the right route
These are different ways to obtain a game and they do not use the same workflow. Use the path that matches what you actually have.

Steam’s support instructions for keys are in Retail CD Keys, and gift procedures are covered in Steam Gifts. Keeping these routes separate prevents a common mistake: trying to enter a key on a Store page or expecting a gift to appear as a free-to-play claim.
How to activate a Steam product key
A product key is a code supplied for Steam registration by a retailer, publisher, or other legitimate distributor. It is not the same as a game listed as free to play.
- Open and sign in to the Steam desktop client on the account that should own the game.
- Select + Add a Game in the client.
- Choose Activate a Product on Steam….
- Read the on-screen terms and enter the code exactly as supplied.
- Continue through Steam’s prompts. If the code is valid and eligible for that account and region, Steam adds the product to the Library.
- Install the game from the Library after activation completes.
If the key fails
An invalid, mistyped, already-used, region-restricted, or non-Steam code may not register. Check the code against the retailer’s documentation and confirm that it was sold for Steam rather than another launcher. Do not assume that a code for a console, a different PC store, downloadable content, or a promotional item can activate the base game on Steam.
Adding an executable as a “non-Steam game” is not a workaround for an invalid key. Steam states that this option only creates a shortcut; it does not provide Steam ownership or Steam-managed updates. Resolve a genuine key problem with the seller or issuer rather than treating a shortcut as proof of ownership.

How to accept a Steam gift
A gift is sent to you by another Steam user or purchaser. It is not a free-to-play listing and does not use product-key activation.
- Sign in to the Steam account that received the gift notification.
- Open the notification and review the game being offered.
- Select Accept Gift.
- Confirm the prompts. The game is then added to your Library, where you can install it.
Steam says a delivered gift has 30 days for acceptance. If it is not accepted within that period, Steam cancels the gift and refunds the purchaser. If you do not recognize the notification, do not accept it until you have verified the sender and the account receiving it.
What account restrictions apply to free games?
Free access to a game and access to every Steam community feature are separate issues. Steam designates an account with neither a purchased game nor a funded Steam Wallet as a Limited User. Steam says some community features are limited on these accounts to help address abuse such as spam and phishing.

That status does not mean you must pay to download or play a free-to-play game. It means certain Steam-wide social or community functions may be unavailable until the account meets Steam’s requirements. A particular game can also impose its own account, age, region, or online-service restrictions. Check the game’s Store page and in-game notices when a feature is unavailable; do not confuse a community limitation with a charge for the game itself.

Install and launch the game from your Library
Once Steam has added the title to the correct account, the Library is the reliable place to manage it. Select the game’s Library entry and use the install or launch option currently presented by the client. Steam may need to download files, allocate disk space, install prerequisites, or update the game before it starts.
- Choose an installation drive with enough free storage for the game and its updates.
- Allow downloads and updates to finish if the launch control is unavailable.
- Keep the Steam client signed in to the account that owns the title.
- For online games, verify that the required network connection and any separate account login are available.
A game can be installed on a computer without being owned by the account currently signed in. Installation files alone do not establish a Steam license.
Why is my Steam game missing from my Library?
Work through the checks below before assuming that Steam removed the game.

Sign out if necessary and sign back in to the account used for the free-to-play claim, key activation, or gift acceptance. A title added to one account will not appear as owned on another. This is the most important check when a family member or shared computer is involved.
2. Clear Library filters
Open the Library and remove filters for installed status, collections, categories, operating system, or other views that could hide the title. Search for the game by name after returning to an unrestricted Library view.
3. Check Hidden Games
Use Steam’s View menu and open Hidden Games. A hidden title is still associated with the account but is omitted from the normal Library view until you restore its visibility.
4. Investigate Family Sharing access
Steam’s missing-library guidance notes that a Pre-Load Complete message can mean the files are installed on the computer while the signed-in account does not own the game or no longer has Family Sharing access. Switch to the owning account or restore the authorized sharing arrangement; reinstalling the files will not create ownership.
5. Check the transaction status when money was involved
For a paid purchase, confirm completion in Steam purchase history. A pending transaction may not appear as owned until it finishes. This check applies to purchases and does not change the no-payment process for a normal free-to-play listing.
6. Recheck the original route
If you intended to use a key, verify that activation completed rather than merely entering a code. If you expected a gift, confirm that you selected Accept Gift and that the 30-day acceptance period has not expired. If you expected a free-to-play title, return to its current Store page and verify that the listing still offers free access.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using an outdated list: Game availability and Store categories change, so check the live Free to Play category and the individual page.
- Entering the wrong kind of code: Product keys belong in the client’s activation flow; a free-to-play listing does not require a code.
- Confusing a shortcut with ownership: A non-Steam shortcut launches a local program but does not grant Steam updates or a license.
- Paying unnecessarily: A credit card, subscription, and wallet balance are not required for free-to-play access.
- Ignoring optional purchases: “Free” covers downloading and playing; review the title’s disclosures before buying in-game content.
- Checking only the installed files: A preloaded game can be present on disk while the current account lacks ownership or sharing permission.
- Accepting an unrecognized gift: Verify the notification and recipient account before accepting.
A quick decision checklist
- Do you want a game currently listed as Free to Play? Open the live Steam category, inspect the Store page, and use its free download or play action.
- Do you have a Steam-issued retail or digital code? Activate it through + Add a Game and Activate a Product on Steam….
- Did someone send you a Steam gift? Open the notification and choose Accept Gift within 30 days.
- Did you only add a local executable? You have a shortcut, not Steam ownership.
- Can’t find the title afterward? Check the signed-in account, clear filters, open View > Hidden Games, and then investigate sharing or transaction status.
The Bottom Line
The safest route is simple: discover the title in Steam’s live Free to Play category, verify its own Store page, and use the free download or play flow. Treat keys, gifts, and non-Steam shortcuts as separate processes, and check the account and Library visibility settings when a claimed game does not appear.
