To find the original source, open the citation attached to the specific claim, read the relevant passage on the linked page, and check that it supports the same wording, scope, date, numbers and caveats. Then verify important claims against an independent source or the underlying study, official document, dataset or original report. AI citations can be incomplete, outdated or wrong, and some answers contain no links at all.
What counts as the original source?
An AI answer may cite a news article, a government page, a research paper, a company announcement or a page that merely repeats someone else’s work. The original source is the closest available record of the fact being claimed: for example, the published study behind a statistic, the official dataset behind a chart, a court filing behind a legal claim, a regulator’s notice behind a safety statement, a standards document behind a technical requirement, or the first-party statement behind an announcement.

A citation is only a route to that evidence. It does not prove that the page supports the summary. A linked article can be related but still omit a qualification, use a different population, report an older number or contradict the AI’s wording. Your task is to test the connection between claim and evidence.
How do I find the original source behind an AI summary?
- Split the summary into individual claims. Rewrite a compound sentence as separate statements. Mark every name, date, number, quotation, causal explanation, prediction and recommendation. Each item may require a different source.
- Open the citation attached to the exact claim. Do not open only the first citation shown for the whole answer. Select the inline citation beside the sentence or clause you are checking. In ChatGPT, selecting a citation opens its source; the Sources control can also show cited sources and related links. The interface is described in OpenAI’s ChatGPT web-search guidance.
- Read past the headline and snippet. Use the page’s find function for a distinctive phrase, name or number, then read the surrounding paragraphs, table, footnote and methodology. Search snippets can remove the context that changes a claim’s meaning.
- Locate the passage that supposedly supports the claim. Copy the relevant sentence or record the section, page number, figure or table. If you cannot find supporting text after reading the page, treat the citation as unverified rather than assuming the AI interpreted it correctly.
- Trace the page backward. Follow its references, methodology links, dataset downloads or quoted documents. Prefer the originating study, official record or original statement over a later article that paraphrases it.
- Check an independent result. Search the key wording, a distinctive number or the named entity. Compare another reputable result and, when feasible, the underlying document. For important information, Google advises checking more than one place, following supporting links and trying other Search results.
How do I check if an AI citation is real?
Confirm that the link resolves to the claimed publisher
Look at the domain, page title, author and organization after the page loads. A plausible-looking title can point to a different site, a removed page or a search result rather than the document itself. Do not rely on a URL displayed in plain text by the AI; open it and verify the page identity.

Check publication and update dates
Record whether the page has a publication date, an update date or both. A current summary may rely on an old policy, superseded statistic or earlier version of a technical document. For high-stakes or precise claims, OpenAI recommends reviewing publication or update dates and using an authoritative source. If the page has no date, note that limitation and look for a dated primary document.
Verify the publisher’s authority for that subject
Authority is contextual. A regulator is usually the strongest source for its own rule; a statistical agency for its own dataset; a court for a filing; a standards body for a specification; and a peer-reviewed paper or research institution for a study. A general-interest article may be useful orientation but is not automatically the best evidence for a medical, legal, financial or engineering detail.
Check that the citation itself exists
Search the cited title, author and date separately if the link is broken. Fabricated papers, quotations, references and citations can occur. OpenAI’s explanation of ChatGPT’s limitations advises visiting links directly and verifying quotes, data and references rather than assuming they are genuine.

Compare the summary and source on six dimensions. A source is strong only when it is direct, authoritative, current and appropriately scoped.

Match the scope, not just the words
Suppose a summary says, “The treatment cuts risk by 30%.” The source might actually report a 30% relative reduction in a selected trial population over a specified period, not a 30-percentage-point reduction for everyone. Check whether the source uses relative or absolute risk, which participants were included, the comparison group, the time frame and whether the result was statistically uncertain.
Keep the source’s qualifiers attached to its numbers
When you record a statistic, keep its publisher, year, population, measure and units in the same note. A number without those qualifiers is easy for an AI system—or a human—to broaden incorrectly. Check that the statistic is attributed to the organization that actually collected or published it.
How should I verify quotations, statistics and technical statements?
Quotations
Find the original transcript, filing, interview, video or press release. Compare the wording character-for-character, including negations and qualifiers. A quotation assembled from several sentences, translated without notice or attributed to the wrong speaker is not verified. If the primary record is unavailable, label the wording as a secondary quotation and avoid presenting it as exact.
Statistics
Open the table or methodology behind the figure. Confirm the year, denominator, sample design, geographic coverage, weighting, units and whether the result is an estimate, a survey response or a one-time count. Check whether a percentage describes respondents, households, users, cases or the entire population.

Technical claims
Look for the specification, version number, test conditions and definition of the term. “Supports” may mean experimental, partial or backward-compatible support rather than full compliance. A benchmark can depend on hardware, software version, workload and configuration; do not generalize it beyond those conditions.
Images and visual evidence
An image can be authentic while its caption is false, or an altered image can be paired with a genuine event. Google describes About this image for available image history, other uses and context, and Fact Check Explorer for existing fact checks in its overview of image-verification tools: Google’s image and source-checking guidance. These tools provide context; they do not independently prove every claim made about an image. The same article cites a 2023 Poynter Institute MediaWise study in which 70% of respondents said they were not totally or very confident in judging whether online images were authentic and reliable. That statistic concerns confidence about image authenticity, not the accuracy of AI summaries.
What should I do when an AI answer has no sources?
Some answers simply provide no links. Gemini’s documentation says a response may have no source links; when there is no Sources button, Gemini did not provide links for that response. See Google’s explanation of sources in Gemini Apps.

- Copy the exact claim, including distinctive wording, names and numbers.
- Search that wording in quotation marks, then search a shorter combination of the key terms.
- Add terms such as the organization, year, dataset, law, study or event named in the answer.
- Open several results and identify the earliest or most authoritative document.
- Trace references from secondary coverage to the primary material.
- If no credible primary source can be found, state that the claim remains unverified. Do not imply that the AI supplied evidence or invent a citation to fill the gap.
A missing citation is not evidence that the claim is false; it means you have not yet established its provenance. The burden is higher when the claim could affect health, safety, money, legal rights, reputation or publication.

Interface labels, controls and availability vary by account, country and product version. If a control is missing, use the claim text to search independently rather than assuming the answer cannot be checked.
A practical worksheet for checking one summary
For consequential work, make a small evidence record instead of relying on memory:
- Claim: write one factual statement in your own words.
- Exact AI wording: preserve the original sentence and any citation marker.
- Source URL and title: copy the address exactly and note the publisher, author and date.
- Supporting passage: quote or describe the precise paragraph, table, figure or page.
- Scope: record population, location, period, version, units and conditions.
- Limitations: note uncertainty, exclusions, conflicts, missing methodology or an undated page.
- Independent check: record a second source and explain whether it corroborates, narrows or contradicts the claim.
- Status: mark the claim as supported, partly supported, contradicted or unverified.
This prevents a common error: reading a source, remembering its general subject and later attributing a stronger statement to it than it actually makes.

Common failure modes and how to recover
The link is dead or redirects
Search the exact title in quotation marks, then look for an archived or updated version on the same publisher’s domain. If you can find only a repost, distinguish that secondary copy from the unavailable original and avoid claiming that you inspected the primary record.
The source is relevant but does not say the same thing
Downgrade the claim to what the source actually establishes, or mark it unsupported. Do not stretch a correlation into causation, a possibility into a fact or an example into a general rule.
Several pages repeat identical wording
Repetition is not independent corroboration. Follow each page’s references until you reach the originating document, then check whether the copies all depend on one earlier error.
The sources disagree
Compare dates, definitions, populations, methods and versions before choosing a side. Explain the disagreement and its cause when possible. If the conflict cannot be resolved, report the uncertainty instead of averaging the claims or selecting the most confident wording.

Precision is not authentication. Verify that the paper, author, journal, report number and quoted passage exist. OpenAI notes that fabricated citations, studies, references and quotes can occur; direct inspection is the remedy.
Using AI-assisted research responsibly in published work
If you are preparing an article, report or classroom assignment, treat every AI-generated factual sentence as a draft that requires human review. Google Search Central says AI-generated content may contain inaccuracies and recommends manual fact-checking and review for accuracy and trustworthiness before publication: Google’s publisher guidance. This is publishing guidance, not a universal legal rule, so follow the standards that apply to your field and jurisdiction.
Keep a record of the primary documents you actually read. Attribute claims to those documents, not to the AI tool that surfaced them. Preserve dates and versions for volatile information, disclose material uncertainty, and remove unsupported details rather than filling gaps with plausible-sounding prose.
The short decision rule
- If the citation opens, the passage directly supports the exact claim, the scope and date match, and an independent check agrees, you can treat the claim as well-supported.
- If the page is relevant but narrower, older or differently defined, rewrite the claim to match the evidence and retain the qualification.
- If the link is fabricated, missing, inaccessible or unsupported by the cited passage, mark the claim unverified and continue searching for the original material.
The reliable habit is simple: open, read, compare and record. An AI summary can save time locating possible evidence, but only the underlying source—and your check that it really says what the summary claims—can support a factual conclusion.
