Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf arXiv is down or limiting requests, search the paper’s title or DOI in OpenAlex, then check Unpaywall for a legal free-to-read copy and CORE for repository or journal versions. Confirm that the result is the right paper and identify its version before quoting or citing it. These services can help locate copies, but none guarantees that every paper has an accessible full text.
Start with the paper’s strongest identifier
- Search the exact title. Use the full title in OpenAlex. If you have the DOI, search by that; use an author’s name as a cross-check rather than relying on a potentially ambiguous name alone.
- Look for other locations on the OpenAlex work record. A record may connect to a publisher page, an arXiv preprint, or copies in institutional repositories. OpenAlex says it tracks roughly 7,000 repository sources and that about 140 million works—roughly 44%—have at least one repository location. Those are service-wide figures from its repository documentation, not a promise that a particular paper is indexed or downloadable. OpenAlex’s repository documentation explains how locations are associated with works.
- Check the DOI in Unpaywall. Unpaywall’s FAQ and REST API describe how it identifies free-to-read copies and points users to their locations. It is a discovery service, not necessarily the host for the file.
- Search CORE as another route. Try the CORE search service or API for copies collected from repositories, journals, and other providers. Some records have hosted full text, but coverage and availability vary.
- Confirm the DOI and publication details if needed. Crossref is useful for checking DOI and bibliographic metadata. It is not a full-text host, though a record may include links to full text.
Choose a route based on what you need
| Service | Best use | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAlex | Broad scholarly discovery by title or DOI, including records with multiple repository locations. Its API can be tried without an account or key; check its live API documentation for current limits. | A record or open-access location does not guarantee a downloadable full text. |
| Unpaywall | Checking a DOI for a free-to-read copy and finding where it is located. | It points to copies rather than serving as the paper host, and coverage varies by paper. See the FAQ. |
| CORE | Searching across repository and journal content; it offers search and API services, and hosts full text for some records. | Coverage and full-text availability vary. Figures published in a 2023 article are historical, not current service totals. See the CORE article. |
| Crossref | Confirming DOI and publication metadata. | It does not host full text, although a metadata record may include a full-text link. |
Check the copy before you rely on it
A search result is not enough to establish that a PDF is the right or final version. Compare its title, authors, and DOI with the work you intended to find. Then look for a version label: a file may be a submitted manuscript, an accepted manuscript, or the published version. OpenAlex describes repository copies as locations associated with a work, and notes that version labels matter. A repository-hosted file is not automatically the final formatted article, nor does the presence of a PDF by itself establish that it completed peer review.

When citing, use the bibliographic details appropriate to the version you actually consulted, and make the version clear where relevant. Do not assume that being able to open a copy means it is freely reusable; access and reuse permissions are different questions.

- Check your institution’s library for subscription access or request options; availability and procedures depend on the institution.
- Consider contacting the author to ask whether they can share an allowed copy. Whether a copy can be shared depends on its permissions and circumstances.
- If an index reports no result, treat that as a limit of the search or its coverage—not proof that no copy exists.
If arXiv or another service is rate-limiting you
Use the service’s normal interface and follow its published API terms. If automated requests are being limited, slow them down, pause, or switch to another discovery route such as OpenAlex, Unpaywall, or CORE. OpenAlex says basic API use is free to start without a key, a free key increases the daily budget tenfold, and heavier use is pay-as-you-go; consult its live API documentation for current budgets and rate limits. There is no universal waiting period established for arXiv limits, so do not treat a guessed delay—or attempts to bypass controls—as official guidance.

Why a paper may appear in one place but not another
Scholarly literature is distributed across publishers, repositories, journals, and databases that do not always exchange data in the same way. Knoth and colleagues describe this interoperability problem in their 2023 article, “CORE: A Global Aggregation Service for Open Access Papers”. That fragmentation is why it is useful to check more than one index and distinguish a metadata record from an actual accessible file.
The article reports that CORE’s January 2023 collection had 291,151,257 metadata records, of which 32,812,252 had full text. These are dated collection figures, not current totals. They illustrate that even a large aggregation service does not provide full text for every metadata record.
