For a dedicated Java server, open the server’s own folder and then open crash-reports. The newest file normally follows a name such as crash-2026-10-14_12.34.56-server.txt. Start reading at ---- Minecraft Crash Report ----, identify the exception and the deepest useful Caused by: section, then use -- System Details -- and logs/latest.log to check versions, Java, memory, and warnings. A crash report can identify the failing code path, but the first mod or library named is not automatically the root cause.

Where Minecraft server crash reports are stored
A crash report is written inside the installation that actually crashed. For a dedicated server, that means the folder containing the server JAR and files such as eula.txt, world, mods, and logs. Open that directory and look for crash-reports.

Fabric’s documentation describes the server location directly: “If you are using a server, they are stored in the crash-reports folder in the server directory.” A client or a local single-player installation uses the game or instance directory instead.
Dedicated Java server
Find the directory from which the server was started. If you launch it with a script, inspect the script’s working directory or the path passed to the launcher. If a host provides a web file manager, open the server’s root directory there and then open crash-reports. The path is not necessarily the same as the Minecraft directory on your personal computer.

Default client and local-installation paths
| Operating system | Default crash-report folder |
|---|---|
| Windows | %appdata%.minecraftcrash-reports |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/crash-reports |
| Linux | ~/.minecraft/crash-reports |
These are the standard Java Edition locations for the default game directory. A third-party launcher can assign each profile its own instance directory, and a hosting panel can expose a separate server directory. If the standard folder is empty, use the launcher’s instance path or the host’s file manager rather than assuming the report was not generated.
Quick ways to open the folder
- Windows: press
Win+R, enter%appdata%.minecraftcrash-reports, and press Enter. For a dedicated server, paste the server directory into File Explorer and opencrash-reports. - macOS: in Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder, enter
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/crash-reports, and press Return. - Linux: open the file manager and use
~/.minecraft/crash-reports. Hidden folders may need to be shown withCtrl+H.
Choose the correct crash file
Crash files normally use a name like crash-yyyy-mm-dd_hh.mm.ss-(client/server).txt. The timestamp is the fastest way to match a file to an outage. The suffix indicates whether the client or server side produced it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Sort the directory by date and select the file created at the time of the failure.
- For a dedicated server outage, prefer the file ending in
-server.txt. - If several crashes occurred close together, compare each timestamp with the server console and
logs/latest.log. - Copy the original to a separate folder before editing, redacting, or uploading it. Keep the untouched copy because formatting and context can matter during diagnosis.
Do not assume the newest report explains an earlier outage. A later restart may have produced another report, while the first failure may have been caused by a different event.
Understand the report’s layout
A crash report is a structured snapshot, not a plain-language diagnosis. Read it from the top, but use each section for a different question.
1. Start at ---- Minecraft Crash Report ----
The opening section gives the crash time, a short error description, and the beginning of the stack trace. This is the most important starting point. The stack trace records the sequence of methods that were executing when Minecraft stopped and can contain a mod ID, package name, loader class, or mixin name.
Read the first paragraphs without trying to interpret every line. First establish what failed, when it failed, and whether the report says anything explicit about a mod, registry, resource, world, or Java class.
2. Identify the exception type and message
The exception name classifies the immediate failure. The message beneath it often supplies the missing class, method, registry entry, resource, or object that triggered the exception.

| Example in the report | What it usually tells you | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|
ClassNotFoundException |
Code tried to load a class that was not available. | Check that the required mod, library, and dependency are installed in the correct mods directory and match the Minecraft and loader versions. |
NoSuchMethodError |
Code found a class but not the method signature it expects, commonly indicating an incompatible version. | Compare the versions of the named mod, its dependency, the loader, and Minecraft. |
| Invalid registry or resource message | A block, item, dimension, resource, or registry entry could not be found or was not valid. | Check mod IDs, data packs or resources, world-specific content, and version changes. |
These examples are leads, not automatic verdicts. A compatibility error can be raised inside a shared library even when another mod supplied the incompatible call.
3. Follow the meaningful stack trace
Scan downward until you reach the first useful Caused by: block or a line naming a recognizable mod package, loader component, or mixin. The deepest relevant cause often explains the failure more clearly than the first exception.
Look for:
- Package names that include a mod’s identifier.
- Mixin names or injection targets associated with a mod.
- Loader classes that show where compatibility failed.
- World, chunk, entity, registry, or resource classes that indicate the kind of data involved.
A stack trace describes the failing path. It does not prove that the first library named caused the original problem. Shared APIs, loaders, and mixin frameworks frequently appear because they were executing another mod’s code. Treat the trace as evidence to compare with the installed files and versions.
4. Use -- System Details -- for environment clues
Record the operating system, Java version, Minecraft version, loader version, and allocated memory shown in -- System Details --. These values let you separate an environment problem from a mod or world problem.
- A Java version that does not match the Minecraft or loader requirement can produce startup or class-loading failures.
- A different Minecraft or loader version from the one expected by a mod can produce missing methods, classes, or registries.
- Memory information helps distinguish an allocation problem from a code or data error, although the report alone may not establish the complete cause.
- The operating system and architecture can reveal why a failure occurs on one machine but not another.
Copy these details exactly when requesting support; do not summarize a version as “latest” because the precise number matters.
5. Read contextual sections only when they fit the failure
Some reports include sections such as -- Last Reload --. Give that section priority when the crash happened during a resource reload, such as applying resources or reloading assets. If the server crashed during startup, world loading, ticking, or a player connection, the main header and stack trace normally provide the more relevant path.
Use the crash timing to narrow the cause
Before changing files, decide what the server was doing when it stopped. Timing is one of the most useful ways to reduce a long list of possible causes.

Crash during startup
Startup failures occur before the world is available. Focus on the exception, mod and dependency names, loader version, Minecraft version, and Java version. Missing classes, missing dependencies, incompatible methods, and invalid configuration are more plausible than a damaged chunk when no world has loaded.
Crash while loading a world
If the server reaches world loading and then stops, compare the trace with the world, dimension, registry, and data-related names it contains. Test a backup or a copy of the world before deleting files or removing content. A clean test world can show whether the failure depends on one world’s data.
Crash while ticking
A tick crash happens while the server is processing entities, block updates, scheduled tasks, or other game logic. Look for entity, block, dimension, or mod package names in the deepest cause. Note whether it happens repeatedly at the same point; repeated crashes after every restart often indicate persistent world or chunk data.
Crash when a player joins
A join-triggered failure can involve player data, a dimension or resource sent during login, a client-server mod mismatch, or a mod that runs only when a player enters the world. Compare the report with latest.log at the same timestamp and test with a copy of the server and, where possible, a different player profile.

Crash during shutdown
If the crash appears only while stopping, inspect the final stack-trace cause and the log lines immediately before shutdown. Do not treat a shutdown-only failure as proof that the world is corrupt; the failing path may be a mod’s cleanup task or an environment issue.
Find which mod is involved without guessing
The report may name a mod directly, but attribution requires comparison with the server’s actual files. A name in a stack trace is a strong lead, not a guarantee.
- Write down every mod ID, package name, mixin, loader component, and dependency named in the exception and the deepest useful
Caused by:block. - List the files in the server’s real
modsdirectory. Confirm that you are checking the directory used by this server, not a client instance or an old backup. - Compare each mod’s Minecraft version, loader type, and dependency version with the values in
-- System Details --. - Open
logs/latest.logand inspect warnings immediately before the crash timestamp. A warning about a missing dependency, failed mixin, or invalid resource can provide context that the crash report does not include. - Make a copy of the server and change one variable at a time: update one implicated mod, restore one dependency, or remove one suspect mod from the copy.
- Repeat the same action that caused the failure. If changing one variable makes the failure disappear, record that result, but continue checking compatibility because the change may only expose a second problem.
Never remove several mods at once if you need to know which change mattered. A controlled, one-variable test produces a result you can explain and reverse.

What to do when there is no crash report
A missing file does not mean that no useful evidence exists. Crash reports contain crash information, but they are not the complete runtime log.
Check logs/latest.log
Open the logs folder in the same server directory and inspect latest.log from the most recent run. Search around the time the process stopped. Include warning and error lines immediately before the final fatal message, not just the last line in the file.
Confirm that you opened the log for the same instance that crashed. A launcher can maintain separate logs for separate profiles, and a host can show logs for a different server than the one you restarted.
Look for a JVM fatal-error file
If the Java virtual machine itself failed, Minecraft may not create a normal crash report. Look in the game or server directory for a file named like hs_err_pid#####.log. Preserve it together with latest.log; it can contain the JVM’s native-crash details that a Minecraft report cannot capture.

Check the process and host panel output
A hosting panel or service manager may display the final exit message separately from the downloadable files. Save that output before restarting repeatedly. A restart can overwrite the most useful console context or make it harder to match timestamps.
Consider a non-crash stop
If the process was killed, the machine lost power, the container reached a resource limit, or an administrator stopped it, Minecraft may not have had time to write a report. In that case, use latest.log, the host’s event history, and the operating system or service-manager log when available.
A safe diagnosis workflow
- Stop the server. Do not keep restarting a server that may be writing to the same world or replacing logs.
- Make a working copy. Copy the crash report,
latest.log, the relevant configuration, and the world backup before editing anything. - Record the timing. Mark whether the failure happened at startup, world loading, ticking, player join, resource reload, or shutdown.
- Read the header and exception. Capture the exact exception type and message.
- Trace the deepest useful cause. Note mod IDs, packages, mixins, loader classes, and world or registry names.
- Record the environment. Copy Minecraft, loader, Java, operating-system, and memory details.
- Compare installed files. Check the actual
modsdirectory and dependency versions against the report. - Correlate the log. Inspect
latest.logat the same timestamp for preceding warnings. - Test one change on the copy. Update, restore, or remove one implicated component and reproduce the same action.
- Protect the world. If the report points to world or chunk data, test a backup or copy before making destructive changes.
Compare competing explanations
When several causes look plausible, rank them using the same evidence instead of choosing the most recognizable name in the trace.
Best Value
| Question | Evidence that supports the explanation | Useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Is it a startup or runtime problem? | The crash occurs before the world opens, or only after a player, tick, or world event. | Compare a restart with the exact in-game action that normally precedes the crash. |
| Does the exception indicate compatibility? | ClassNotFoundException, NoSuchMethodError, or a version-sensitive registry/resource message. |
Compare Minecraft, loader, Java, mod, and dependency versions. |
| Is a mod or mixin on the failing path? | A mod ID, package, mixin, or loader hook appears in the deepest meaningful cause. | Change only that component on a server copy. |
| Is the world or chunk involved? | The crash occurs while loading or ticking a particular world area and the trace names world, chunk, entity, or block data. | Test a backup or clean copy before deleting or repairing data. |
| Does it reproduce everywhere? | The same failure occurs on a clean test world or every player connection. | Compare a clean world with the affected world to separate environment and data causes. |
This comparison prevents a common mistake: blaming a shared library simply because it appears near the top of the stack. Reproduction and one-variable testing provide stronger evidence than name recognition.

Prepare a useful support request
Helpers need the original context, not a screenshot of one line. Provide the full crash report in a code-preserving paste and include the surrounding log lines that match the same timestamp.
- Minecraft version.
- Loader: vanilla, Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge.
- Java version.
- Server type and how it is launched or hosted.
- The complete mod list, including dependency versions where relevant.
- The relevant
latest.logexcerpt, especially warnings immediately before the crash. - What the server was doing when it stopped and whether the problem reproduces on a clean copy or only in one world or chunk.
- Any controlled changes already tested and the exact result of each change.
Remove account names, personal file paths, IP addresses, access tokens, and other secrets when they are not needed for diagnosis. Do not remove stack-trace lines, mod IDs, version numbers, or timestamps that explain the failure. Keep a private untouched copy in case the redacted version omits something important.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Looking in the client folder for a server crash
A dedicated server writes to its own server directory. Find the folder containing that server’s logs, world, and mods instead of relying on the default client path.
Opening an old report
Match the filename timestamp to the outage and confirm it against latest.log. Several close reports can describe different attempts or different causes.
Reading only the first named mod
Follow the deepest useful Caused by: block and compare the named component with installed versions. The first package in a stack trace may be a loader, API, or shared library rather than the original incompatibility.
Changing many files at once
Work on a copy and change one variable. Otherwise you cannot tell which update, removal, or configuration change affected the result.
Editing the only copy of the report or world
Preserve the original report and make a backup before world repairs, mod removal, or redaction. Destructive changes can erase evidence and make recovery harder.
Quick Recap
Key facts to keep at hand
- A dedicated server report is normally in the server directory’s
crash-reportsfolder. - The client and local-installation equivalents are under the game or launcher instance directory.
- The first reading point is
---- Minecraft Crash Report ----, followed by the exception, deepest useful cause, and stack trace. -- System Details --supplies Java, operating-system, Minecraft, loader, and memory context.- If no report exists, inspect
logs/latest.logand search forhs_err_pid#####.logafter a JVM failure. - A mod name in a trace is a lead to verify, not proof by itself; controlled testing on a copy is the reliable way to attribute a failure.
