How to Find and Play the Original Indie Game Before Its Sequel

By Freedom251 Team · · 14 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the sequel’s official store page, identify its developer and publisher, then follow the listed franchise or related-game links. Confirm the series order on the developer’s own website before buying anything. Search the original by its exact title on the developer’s site and reputable storefronts, and verify that the product is the base game—not downloadable content, a soundtrack, an expansion, or a bundle.

Whether you should actually play the original first is a separate question. Release chronology tells you which game came out earlier; the developer’s story guidance tells you the recommended play order. Some sequels are designed as standalone entries, while others assume knowledge of the first game.

1. Begin with the sequel’s official listing

The sequel is usually the most reliable starting point because its store page contains the series metadata you need. Open the listing published by the game’s developer or an authorized store, rather than relying on a search-result snippet, a fan wiki, or a video description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the identifying details

Write down the exact sequel title, developer, publisher, platform, and the spelling of any subtitle or punctuation. Indie games often have similarly named editions, ports, remasters, and unrelated games. An exact title gives you a much better chance of locating the correct earlier entry.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
  • Developer: the studio responsible for the game. This is the best lead for an official series page.
  • Publisher: useful for distinguishing the original release from a later port or reissue.
  • Franchise or series name: follow it when the store provides one.
  • Related games: treat these as leads, not proof that a title is a narrative predecessor.

Steam’s store-page tools allow creators to highlight related games and franchises. That makes the sequel page a practical discovery route, but you should still confirm the relationship using the developer’s own website or an official series page.

Check the developer’s own series information

Look for a “Games,” “Projects,” “Series,” or “About” section on the developer’s website. A developer-maintained page can clarify whether a title is a direct sequel, a spin-off, a remake, or simply another game in the same universe. It may also state the recommended narrative order.

If the developer’s site and a store’s related-games panel disagree, do not assume the store panel is correct. Store metadata can be incomplete, especially for older releases and games that changed publishers. Use the developer’s description or announcement as the authority for story relationships.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also note whether the sequel is credited to the same studio as the earlier game. A publisher may have commissioned a port or handed later distribution to another company, so a different publisher does not automatically mean you have found the wrong series. Conversely, a matching publisher alone is weak evidence: publishers handle many unrelated games.

2. Search for the original by its exact title

Once you have a likely title, search that title verbatim on the developer’s website and on established PC storefronts such as Steam, itch.io, and GOG. Include subtitle, capitalization, and punctuation when searching. If the sequel page uses a stylized title, try both the stylized and plain-text versions.

Use more than one storefront

Different stores list different editions and platforms. itch.io describes itself as a service for finding and sharing independent games, so it can be useful for small or experimental releases. GOG’s Preservation Program focuses on preserving original games and making them playable on modern machines. These storefronts are discovery avenues, not guarantees that a particular unnamed game is available there.

Search results can include soundtracks, art books, demos, expansions, bundles, or fan-made projects. Open the individual product page and compare its details with the sequel’s developer and publisher information.

Search the developer’s name separately if an exact-title search produces too many results. A studio may have moved a game to a new publisher, changed its branding, or listed the original under a subtitle. Official announcement posts, press pages, and catalog pages can preserve a link even when a store’s search index is incomplete.

Confirm that the title is really part of the same series

  • The developer or original studio matches the sequel’s official information.
  • The product description explicitly calls the game a predecessor, first entry, prequel, or original installment.
  • The developer’s website, official announcements, or series page connects the two titles.

A matching name alone is not enough. “Original,” “classic,” and “complete” can describe an edition rather than the first game in a series.

Look at screenshots and the description as a final identity check. Similar names can hide entirely different genres or platforms. If the sequel’s official page names a particular character, setting, or subtitle, the original’s official description should fit that continuity rather than merely sharing a keyword.

3. Make sure you are buying the base game

A store page can look correct while offering a product that is not the game you want to play. Read the product type and included-content information before checkout or download.

Listing type What it usually contains Is it the original game?
Base game or application The playable main release Yes, if the title and series relationship are confirmed
Downloadable content (DLC) Additional content that requires another game No, unless the listing explicitly includes the base game
Expansion A substantial add-on, often requiring the base game No
Soundtrack Audio files, not the playable game No
Bundle or collection Several products, sometimes with the original included Only if the included-content list names it
Demo or prologue A limited preview or opening section No

Steam’s documentation distinguishes downloadable content from the base application and uses a special app type for soundtracks. Therefore, do not infer that a listing is playable from its title alone. Check the product type, included items, platform, and region on the specific listing.

Read the ownership and requirements details

Look for wording such as “requires the base game,” “included with,” or “playable standalone.” A soundtrack may appear beside the game in a search result but has no executable game application. A bundle may include the original, but only the itemized contents establish that fact.

Also check whether the offer is a standard edition, deluxe edition, remaster, or port. If you want the historical original, a remaster may alter graphics, controls, content, or compatibility. If your priority is simply experiencing the story, a remaster may be acceptable; make that choice deliberately rather than accidentally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a “complete” label as proof that every earlier game is included. Open the bundle’s contents and confirm the original’s exact title. Likewise, an expansion that is described as a “new chapter” can still require the base application. The requirement line is more reliable than promotional language.

4. Separate release order from recommended play order

“Which game came first?” and “Which game should I play first?” are not identical questions.

Release chronology

Release chronology is the sequence in which the publisher made games available. Use official store dates, developer announcements, or another official release record. Be careful with dates shown on storefronts: Steamworks documentation explains that developers can customize the player-facing date display separately from the exact intended date maintained in release planning. If a date seems disputed, cross-check it against an official announcement or release record.

Regional launches, early-access periods, console ports, and later remasters can produce several dates for one title. Decide which date you are comparing: the first public release, the full 1.0 launch, or the version on your platform. Record the platform alongside the date so a port does not appear to be the original release.

Story order

Story order is the sequence the developer recommends for understanding characters, setting, and plot. A game released later can be set earlier, and a sequel label does not always mean that the first game is mandatory.

The Steam listing for Finding Paradise gives a clear example: “This is To the Moon’s standalone sequel, but can also be played first.” That statement applies to that game, not to sequels generally. Use the developer’s own wording for the series you are investigating.

Standalone sequels versus continuity-heavy sequels

A standalone sequel normally introduces its own conflict, characters, and terminology. You can begin there, although the earlier game may add context or reveal references. A continuity-heavy sequel may assume that you know the original’s ending, mechanics, or world-building. In that case, playing the original first prevents avoidable spoilers and confusion.

Do not use a store’s “similar games” or recommendation algorithm as evidence of narrative order. A cross-store study of indie-game discoverability examines similarities between itch.io and Steam, but similarity or storefront relationships do not establish continuity or sequel order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the developer gives no explicit order, use the least spoiler-prone approach: start with the earliest story entry when it is easy to obtain, or start with the sequel only after checking spoiler warnings and an official synopsis. Avoid fan-made chronological lists that reveal plot points unless you are comfortable with spoilers.

5. Compare your practical options before choosing

After identifying the original, compare the actual listing you can buy or download with the sequel you already found. Availability, compatibility, and edition details vary by game, country, platform, and date.

Decision point What to verify Why it matters
Recommended story order Developer’s series guidance Determines whether the original is essential, optional, or mainly contextual
Release chronology Official release dates and announcements Prevents confusing an earlier-set story with the first published game
Country availability Store listing for your account region Games, editions, and purchase rights can differ by region
Platform Windows, macOS, Linux, console, handheld, or other supported platform shown on the listing A game may be sold in your region but not run on your device
System requirements Operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics, storage, and controller requirements Compatibility cannot be generalized from the sequel
Product type Base game, DLC, expansion, soundtrack, demo, or bundle Prevents paying for content that is not playable on its own
Edition or version Original release, remaster, port, complete edition, or regional build Different versions can change content and technical behavior

No single price, region, operating-system support, or hardware recommendation can be stated without the game’s title and the current listing. Store prices and availability change, so verify them immediately before purchase.

Check whether ownership is tied to a launcher or account, and whether the listing says the game is playable offline. These details affect how you will access an older title, but they are specific to each store and product. Read the current license and installation information rather than assuming the sequel’s terms apply to the original.

6. A reliable step-by-step workflow

  1. Open the sequel’s official listing. Use the developer’s or authorized storefront page, not an unverified upload.
  2. Copy the exact title and identify the developer and publisher. Preserve subtitles and punctuation.
  3. Inspect franchise, series, developer, and related-game links. Record candidate earlier titles.
  4. Open the developer’s website. Find its game catalog or official series page and confirm which candidate is the predecessor.
  5. Search the exact original title. Check the developer’s site, Steam, itch.io, and GOG, then open each specific product page.
  6. Validate the product type. Confirm that the page sells or provides the playable base game, not DLC, an expansion, soundtrack, demo, or a bundle without the original.
  7. Check region and platform details. Confirm that the offer is available in your country and supports your device and operating system.
  8. Read the developer’s play-order guidance. Look for explicit terms such as “standalone,” “play first,” “recommended order,” or a warning about prior-story knowledge.
  9. Compare release dates when chronology matters. Resolve conflicting dates with official announcements or release records.
  10. Choose an edition intentionally. Decide whether you want the original release, a remaster, or a complete edition based on content and compatibility.
  11. Install and launch the correct application. After purchase, verify that the installed item’s name matches the base game and that it appears in your library as a playable application.

Save the official links and the edition you selected. If a listing disappears or changes, those records help you distinguish a delisted product from a similarly named replacement. Recheck the pages on the day you buy because catalog status and pricing can change.

7. What to do when the original is hard to find

The sequel page has no related-game link

Search the developer’s name rather than the sequel’s title. Small studios sometimes maintain a simple project list instead of a formal franchise page. Publisher catalogs and official announcement posts can also identify earlier entries.

Several games have nearly identical names

Match the developer, publisher, release period, screenshots, description, and platform. Do not rely on the title alone. If the developer’s site names a specific subtitle or edition, use that exact wording in store searches.

Only DLC or a soundtrack appears

Open the publisher or developer page linked from the sequel, then search the original title directly. On Steam, inspect the product’s application type and requirements. A soundtrack or DLC page cannot substitute for the base game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original is unavailable in your country

Check the developer’s official site and other authorized storefronts for a legitimate release. Availability is region-specific and can change. Do not assume that a listing visible in search results can be purchased or activated in your account region.

The original does not run on your device

Compare the exact system requirements with your operating system and hardware. A sequel’s compatibility says nothing conclusive about the original. If an official modern port or preserved edition exists, compare its contents with the original before choosing it.

The sequel appears to spoil the original

Look for the developer’s recommended order and spoiler warnings. If the sequel is continuity-heavy, play the original first. If the developer explicitly describes it as standalone, beginning with the sequel is a reasonable option, but you may miss references intended for returning players.

The original was released by a different publisher

That can happen after a studio changes partners or a new company handles distribution. Confirm the connection through the developer’s catalog or an official announcement, then check who currently sells the authorized version. Publisher changes alone neither prove nor disprove that a game is the predecessor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. A quick decision framework

Play the original first when

  • The developer labels it the first entry or recommends chronological play.
  • The sequel assumes knowledge of the original’s characters, mechanics, or ending.
  • You want to avoid spoilers and experience the series as it was introduced.
  • The original is available on your platform in a suitable edition.

Start with the sequel when

  • The developer explicitly calls it standalone or says it can be played first.
  • The original is unavailable, incompatible, or substantially harder to obtain.
  • You prefer the sequel’s modern controls and can accept discovering the earlier game later.

Pause before buying when

  • You cannot confirm the developer or series connection.
  • The listing does not clearly identify the product as the base game.
  • The store date conflicts with official release information.
  • Region, platform, or system requirements are missing.

When both games are available, your choice can be practical rather than absolute. A standalone sequel may be the better entry point for a modern device, while the original may be the better choice for preserving the series’ intended introduction. Make the trade-off explicit instead of treating release numbering as an automatic rule.

9. The final verification checklist

  • Exact title copied from an official source.
  • Developer and publisher match the sequel’s verified information.
  • Developer or official series page confirms the relationship.
  • Listing is the playable base application.
  • It is not only DLC, an expansion, soundtrack, demo, or incomplete bundle.
  • Your country can purchase or activate it.
  • Your operating system and hardware meet the listed requirements.
  • You know whether you are buying the original, a remaster, a port, or a complete edition.
  • Developer guidance answers whether the original should come first.
  • Release dates have been cross-checked when chronology affects your choice.

Availability and prices are changeable facts, not permanent properties of a game. Recheck the exact listing, edition, region, and requirements when you are ready to purchase. This guide was checked on October 13, 2026; a later store update can still change what is offered.

10. Frequently overlooked checks

Do not confuse a sequel’s marketing page with a complete franchise history. A page may highlight only the newest release, omit a delisted predecessor, or show a port as a related product. If the original is absent, use the developer’s complete catalog and dated announcements rather than concluding that it never existed.

Likewise, do not infer availability from a search result’s price or thumbnail. The account region, platform filter, and product type on the opened listing determine what you can actually acquire. A soundtrack can share the game’s artwork and title, and a bundle can display a low combined price while excluding the entry you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Why cross-checking matters

Storefront relationships are optimized for discovery and sales, not for documenting narrative canon. Similarity systems can place games together because they share genre, tags, or audience, even when they have no story connection. Treat every automated recommendation as a lead that still needs confirmation from the developer.

Dates deserve the same care. A storefront’s visible date may be customized for presentation, while the developer’s release planning record or announcement gives a different milestone. When the distinction affects whether a game is truly the first release, compare two official records and note whether you are looking at early access, full release, or a later port.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the first game in an indie series?

Open the sequel’s official listing, copy the exact title and developer, inspect franchise or related-game links, and confirm the predecessor on the developer’s own website or official series page.

Can I play a sequel before the original?

Sometimes. Follow the developer’s guidance. The Steam listing for Finding Paradise, for example, calls it a standalone sequel that can also be played first, but that statement does not apply to every series.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether I am buying the game and not DLC?

Check the product type, requirements, and included-content list. A base application is playable; DLC, expansions, soundtracks, and demos are not substitutes unless the listing explicitly includes the base game.

Which stores should I check?

Search the developer’s site and authorized storefronts such as Steam, itch.io, and GOG. Each store may carry different editions or platforms, so confirm the exact product page and your account region.

Is a remaster the same as the original?

Not necessarily. A remaster or port can change graphics, controls, content, or compatibility. Compare the edition descriptions and choose the version that matches your goal.

Why do release dates differ between listings?

A game may have early-access, full-release, regional, console, or port dates. Steam’s player-facing date can also be customized, so cross-check a disputed date against an official developer announcement or release record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Trace the sequel through its official listing, verify the predecessor on the developer’s site, and buy only a clearly identified base-game application from an authorized storefront. Then compare story guidance, release chronology, region, platform, requirements, and edition. A sequel may be playable first, but only the developer’s own wording can establish that for the series you are investigating.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
