In Red Dead Redemption 2 story mode, the quickest way to start a table game is to travel to a listed location, approach the occupied table or activity marker, and use the on-screen interaction prompt. The game has four table minigames: poker, blackjack, dominoes, and Five Finger Fillet. Poker, blackjack, and dominoes use luck-heavy rules; Five Finger Fillet is a timed button-sequence contest rather than a card game.
All four story-mode minigames and where to find them
The location list below follows the story-mode locations documented by RDR2.org’s guide, updated January 9, 2023. It does not establish that every table is available at the beginning of a playthrough, nor does it settle temporary availability or chapter-specific access. If a table is not active when you arrive, continue playing the story and check again later rather than assuming the activity has been removed.

| Poker | Van der Linde camp; Valentine; Tumbleweed; Blackwater; Flatneck Station | Approach the poker table and accept the on-screen prompt to sit. | Use two private cards and five community cards to make the best hand; call or match, raise, or fold. |
| Blackjack | Van der Linde camp; Blackwater; Van Horn Trading Post; Rhodes | Approach the blackjack table and use the interaction prompt. | Finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. |
| Dominoes | Van der Linde camp; Blackwater; Saint Denis; Emerald Ranch | Approach the dominoes table and join when prompted. | Match a tile to an exposed end; the first player to empty a hand wins the round. |
| Five Finger Fillet | Van der Linde camp; Valentine; Strawberry; Van Horn Trading Post | Approach the activity and start the prompted contest. | Copy the demonstrated button sequence faster and accurately; win two of three laps. |
“Other gambling minigames” is slightly imprecise: Five Finger Fillet is included among the four table activities, but it is a reflex challenge, not a wager-based card or domino game.
Before sitting down
Confirm that you are in the mode you intend to play
Story mode and Red Dead Online do not share one universal location list. The story guide lists poker at camp, Valentine, Tumbleweed, Blackwater, and Flatneck Station, while Rockstar’s online feature page describes Hold’em tables in Blackwater, Saint Denis, Tumbleweed, Valentine, and Flatneck Station. Treat those as separate references. A location appearing in the online list is not automatically a story-mode table, and a story-mode activity is not automatically available online.

Use the prompt instead of guessing a controller button
RDR2.org’s guide describes approaching an occupied table or marked activity and using the interaction prompt, but it does not provide a verified button map for every PlayStation, Xbox, or PC control scheme. Read the prompt shown on your own screen. This avoids following a button instruction written for a different platform, remapped controls, or a different control preset.
Decide what you are trying to accomplish
There are three different reasons to play. You may simply want to learn a game, you may be working toward the completion checklist, or you may be attempting a Gambler challenge. Those goals change the best way to approach a session. A casual learning round can end as soon as the rules make sense; a completion run requires one game of each type; a Gambler challenge may require a particular kind of win at a particular location.
How to play poker
Where the poker tables are
Story-mode poker is available at the five locations in the table above: Van der Linde camp, Valentine, Tumbleweed, Blackwater, and Flatneck Station. Travel to one of those places, find the poker table, and accept the sit-down prompt. If the activity is not currently present, RDR2.org’s January 9, 2023 location list alone does not prove that it should be available at that point in your story.

The basic Texas Hold’em objective
The story-mode guide describes poker as Texas Hold’em. You receive two private cards, called hole cards, and five community cards are revealed for everyone. Your task is to combine the cards available to you into the best hand. After cards are revealed, the meaningful choices are to call or match the current amount, raise it, or fold and leave the hand.
- Look at your two private cards. They are the only cards that belong exclusively to you.
- Watch the community cards. They are shared, so every remaining player can use them.
- Compare possible hands. Consider how your private cards combine with the shared cards, not just whether one private card looks high.
- Choose an action. Match the current wager when you want to continue without increasing it, raise when you want to increase the pressure, or fold when continuing is not worthwhile.
- Let the hand resolve. The top hand wins once the remaining cards and decisions have been completed.
A beginner’s decision process
Do not treat every hand as a mandatory contest. Start by asking whether your private cards have a useful connection to the community cards. If the shared cards do not improve your possibilities and another player has made the cost of continuing high, folding is a valid action rather than a failure. If the cards give you a strong combination, matching keeps you in the hand; raising is the more aggressive option when you want opponents to pay more to continue.

- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
The game does not require you to memorize a separate control scheme for each decision. Read the available call, raise, and fold prompts and select the action that fits your hand. The important rule distinction is that poker rewards the strongest final combination, while a fold ends your participation before the comparison.
Poker and the Gambler challenges
Poker is one of the luck-influenced activities identified by the Gambler guide. The challenge series includes winning five poker hands. That requirement is different from merely sitting at a table or playing one hand for completion credit. If you are pursuing the challenge, keep the challenge’s exact win condition in view; do not assume that a hand played at any table or a hand abandoned by folding will count as a win.

Where the blackjack tables are
In story mode, blackjack tables are listed at Van der Linde camp, Blackwater, Van Horn Trading Post, and Rhodes. Approach the table and follow the on-screen prompt. As with the other activities, RDR2.org’s January 9, 2023 location list does not establish that every table is unlocked or active at every point in the story.
The target is 21 without busting
Blackjack starts with two cards. You want a total closer to 21 than the dealer’s total, but going over 21 loses the hand. An ace can count as either one or eleven, and face cards count as ten.
- Read your opening total. Add the two starting cards, allowing an ace to take the value that helps without taking the total over 21.
- Choose hit or stay. Hit asks for another card; stay keeps your current total.
- Recalculate after each hit. A new card can make a previously safe total too high, especially when an ace changes from eleven to one or vice versa.
- Stop before the total goes over 21. A higher total is not useful if it busts.
- Compare with the dealer. You need to finish closer to 21 than the dealer, not merely close to 21 in isolation.
Why the ace matters
The ace’s flexible value is the key rule beginners often miss. A hand containing an ace may be counted with that ace as eleven when the total remains safe, or as one when eleven would push the total over 21. Recheck the total after every card instead of treating an ace as permanently worth one value.

Blackjack and the Gambler challenges
The Gambler sequence includes a challenge to win a blackjack hand after doubling down. That is a specific condition, not the same as winning an ordinary hand. The guide also characterizes blackjack challenges as substantially luck-dependent. If your goal is the challenge, follow the requested action and win condition precisely; a routine victory may not satisfy a condition that names a particular move.

Where to find dominoes
Story-mode dominoes are listed at Van der Linde camp, Blackwater, Saint Denis, and Emerald Ranch. Sit at the dominoes table through the interaction prompt, then examine the exposed ends before selecting a tile.
Matching ends and drawing
The core rule is straightforward: place a tile whose number matches an exposed end of the layout. If you cannot make a legal play, draw until you can play. The first player to empty their hand wins the round. The cited guide describes a 60-point match target, so distinguish winning one round from winning the overall match.
- Identify every exposed end. The playable numbers are the numbers showing at the open ends of the chain.
- Check your hand for a match. A tile is useful when one of its numbers matches an exposed end.
- Place a legal tile. Keep the matching number against the exposed end and leave the new number available for the next play.
- Draw when you have no legal move. Continue drawing until you can place a tile, following the table’s prompt.
- Track the round and match. Emptying your hand wins the round; the guide’s 60-point target governs the match described there.
Dominoes and the Gambler challenges
The Gambler guide lists a requirement to win rounds of dominoes without drawing. That condition is stricter than merely winning a round. Because the guide characterizes dominoes challenges as luck-dependent, a failed attempt does not necessarily indicate a rules error. Start another round and keep the no-draw condition in mind from the first tile.
How to play Five Finger Fillet
It is a timed input game, not a card game
Five Finger Fillet is the fourth story-mode table minigame, but it does not use cards or dominoes. The opponent demonstrates a sequence of button prompts. You then reproduce that sequence accurately and faster. The contest is won by taking two of three laps.

- Watch the demonstration. Do not press ahead while learning the order; the sequence is the information you need to copy.
- Read each prompt as it appears. Accuracy matters as much as speed.
- Repeat the sequence. Match the demonstrated order rather than improvising a rhythm.
- Build a lead over the laps. Two successful laps out of three win the contest.
The Gambler guide treats Five Finger Fillet differently from poker, blackjack, and dominoes: it rewards learning the timed input sequence rather than relying mainly on favorable cards or tiles. If you lose, focus on recognizing the prompt order and reducing hesitation on the next attempt.
Story completion versus the Gambler challenge series
What counts for 100% completion
GTABase states that playing all four table games once is required for 100% completion and for the Hobby Horse achievement. A win is not required for this checklist item. Therefore, a player working only on completion needs to start poker, blackjack, dominoes, and Five Finger Fillet once; the task is not equivalent to winning a poker hand, reaching the 60-point dominoes target, or completing every Gambler rank.
What the ten Gambler challenges require
The Gambler guide describes ten sequential challenges with game-specific conditions. Examples include winning five poker hands, winning blackjack after doubling down, winning rounds of dominoes without drawing, and defeating opponents at named locations. These conditions add actions, locations, or win requirements that the four-game completion checklist does not have.
- For completion: play each of the four games once, regardless of whether you win.
- For Gambler ranks: read the current rank’s exact condition before sitting down, because the required game, action, location, and result can differ.
- For a clean first attempt: treat luck-heavy results as repeatable attempts, while treating Five Finger Fillet as a sequence-learning exercise.
Red Dead Online: what changes
Online Hold’em locations
Rockstar’s online feature page describes Hold’em tables, including public and private games, at Blackwater, Saint Denis, Tumbleweed, Valentine, and Flatneck Station. This is an online-mode detail and should not be merged with the story-mode table list.
Do not assume every story activity is online
Rockstar’s online feature page establishes poker Hold’em locations. It does not provide the story-mode rule guide for all four activities or establish an online location list for blackjack, dominoes, or Five Finger Fillet. Use the activity and prompt shown in your current mode rather than expecting the story-mode four-game checklist to carry over unchanged.

Public versus private tables
Rockstar’s description explicitly distinguishes public and private Hold’em games. Choose the table type that matches whether you want an open game or a restricted session, then follow the online table’s on-screen instructions.
Which game should you start with?
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Understanding a shared-card card game | Poker | You combine two private cards with five community cards and choose call, raise, or fold. |
| A simple numerical target | Blackjack | The objective is to approach 21 without going over, with clear ace and face-card values. |
| A tile-placement system | Dominoes | You match numbers to exposed ends and draw when no legal move is available. |
| Practice rather than luck | Five Finger Fillet | You copy a demonstrated sequence and can improve through timing and accuracy. |
| Fastest route to the four-game completion check | Whichever listed activity is available first | GTABase requires playing each game once, not winning each one. |
Poker, blackjack, and dominoes can all turn on the cards or tiles you receive, so losing a single attempt does not prove that you misunderstood the rules. Five Finger Fillet gives you more direct control: careful observation and faster, cleaner inputs are the central skills.
Troubleshooting when a minigame will not start
The table is not where you expected
Check that you are using the story-mode or online list appropriate to your current mode. Poker’s story locations and online Hold’em locations overlap only partly, and the complete four-game story list should not be treated as an online map.
No interaction prompt appears
Move close to the occupied table or activity marker and look for the on-screen interaction prompt. Because exact controls vary by platform and can be remapped, use the button or key shown in your interface rather than a generic controller instruction.
The activity is listed but unavailable
RDR2.org’s location guide does not settle every chapter unlock, temporary table availability, or edition-specific difference. Continue the story, revisit the location, and check another listed location for the same game. Do not conclude from one empty table that the minigame has been removed.
You are playing for a challenge but it did not count
Compare what you did with the precise condition for the current Gambler rank. A normal win may not satisfy a requirement that specifies doubling down, avoiding draws, winning a certain number of hands, or beating opponents at named locations. Completion credit and Gambler credit are separate goals.
You keep losing
For poker, reconsider whether continuing or raising is worthwhile when the community cards do not improve your hand. For blackjack, recalculate totals after each hit and remember that an ace can be one or eleven. For dominoes, inspect every exposed end before drawing. For Five Finger Fillet, spend a round learning the demonstrated sequence before trying to optimize speed.

- Choose a story-mode location. Use the table above to select a nearby place for the game you want to learn.
- Approach the activity. Stand at the occupied table or marked Five Finger Fillet activity and use the prompt shown on screen.
- Play one complete attempt. Follow the game’s objective rather than trying to satisfy a Gambler condition immediately.
- Record your goal. If you are completing the checklist, mark that game as played. If you are pursuing Gambler ranks, note the exact condition before the next attempt.
- Move to the next activity. Play all four once for the completion requirement, or stay with the relevant game when a challenge requires repeated wins.
That approach prevents the most common confusion: treating “I sat at the table,” “I won a round,” “I won a match,” and “I completed a Gambler condition” as if they were the same achievement.
