How to Find and Organize Your Google Photos Recap Videos

On Android, open Google Photos, tap Photos, and check the featured Memories carousel. The 2025 Recap appears at the front when it is first available. After you watch it, Google moves it to the back of that carousel during December and pins it in Collections; after New Year’s, look at the top of the December section in your Photos grid. Recap is currently not available on desktop.

Where to find your Google Photos Recap during December

Google’s current help instructions describe the 2025 Recap and Android navigation. The exact placement is seasonal, so a future year may use different labels or a different carousel position.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Open the Recap for the first time

  1. Open the latest version of the Google Photos app on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Sign in to the Google Account that contains the year’s backed-up photos.
  3. Tap Photos in the app.
  4. At the top, look through the featured Memories carousel. When the 2025 Recap is available and has not yet been opened, Google places it at the front of that carousel.
  5. Tap the Recap memory to play it.

If notifications are enabled for Google Photos, the app may notify you when the Recap is ready. A notification is not required, however; availability is controlled by Google’s eligibility checks and the account’s photo history. If you dismissed the alert, you have not dismissed the Recap itself.

Return to it later in December

After you have viewed the video, it may no longer be the first card. During December, Google says a viewed Recap stays at the back of the featured Memories carousel and is also pinned in Collections. Check both locations if you dismissed the original notification or cannot see it at the front.

Use the date to choose where to look rather than repeatedly refreshing one screen. The front of the carousel is the first-time location; the back of the carousel and Collections are the return locations during December.

How to find the Recap after the new year

Once the year has ended, the Recap moves out of its seasonal placement. In Google Photos:

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Scroll to the month of December in the photo grid.
  3. Look at the top of that month for the pinned Recap.
  4. Tap it to play the video.

Google’s instructions also describe manually saving the Recap to the photo grid. Saving it gives you a more predictable route back to the video if the seasonal Memories carousel changes. The wording and placement are specific to the 2025 Recap, so treat later-year instructions as subject to change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are searching in January or later, do not assume that the old December carousel card has vanished because it is no longer visible there. Start in the December portion of the grid, then look for the copy you saved. The annual video and other creations made from it may not share exactly the same search label.

Know which location applies to the date

  • First available in December: check the front of the featured Memories carousel.
  • After you watch it, still in December: check the back of the carousel and the pinned item in Collections.
  • After New Year’s: open Photos and inspect the top of the December section in the grid.
  • After saving: use the saved copy in the photo grid as your dependable route, even if the seasonal card is harder to spot.

This timeline explains why two people can follow the same menu path and see different results: one may be opening the Recap for the first time, while the other is returning to a video that has already been viewed.

Why your Recap may be missing

A missing card does not necessarily mean the video was deleted. Google lists several conditions for a full Recap. Check them in this order:

Confirm that the account has enough photos across the year

Recap is built from a year of activity rather than a single album. An account with very few photos, long gaps, or most images stored outside Google Photos may not qualify for a full video. Make sure you are checking the account that actually contains the year’s library; switching to another signed-in account can make a qualifying history appear to be missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn on Face Groups and select your face

Google lists Face Groups as a prerequisite and requires you to select your own face. In Google Photos settings, find the Face Groups controls, enable the feature if necessary, and identify your face. Face recognition can take time to process a large library, so an immediately changed setting may not produce an immediate Recap.

Update the Google Photos app

Install the current version available for your device. Year-specific Memories features can depend on a recent app build, and older builds may show different navigation or omit the Recap card. Recheck the Photos tab after updating instead of relying on an old screenshot or a menu path from another year.

Check backup for that year’s content

Google says backup must be enabled for the photos used by that year’s Recap. Confirm that the relevant images have finished uploading to the same Google Account you are viewing in the app. Photos that exist only on a phone or in another account cannot reliably contribute to this Recap. A backup setting changed today may also require processing time before the library meets the eligibility check.

Understand the Gemini note

Google describes Gemini features in Photos as an enhanced experience in the United States. It is not presented as a universal prerequisite for receiving the Recap. Do not treat the US-only enhancement wording as a requirement for every account or country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow for changing eligibility and labels

The current documentation is written for the 2025 Recap. Google can change eligibility, timing, card names, and navigation for a later year. If all listed conditions are met but no Recap appears, check the latest Google Photos Help instructions for that year rather than relying on an old screenshot or menu path.

Quick recovery checklist

  • Use the correct Google Account.
  • Open the mobile app, not a desktop browser.
  • Tap Photos and inspect the entire featured Memories carousel.
  • During December, check the carousel’s back and Collections.
  • After New Year’s, inspect the top of the December section in the grid.
  • Make sure Face Groups is enabled and your face is selected.
  • Update Google Photos.
  • Verify that the year’s photos are backed up.
  • Give newly changed Face Groups or backup settings time to process.

Work through the list without deleting images or changing accounts as a test. Those actions can remove useful evidence about which photos were backed up and which account originally generated the memory.

Edit the Recap inside Google Photos

Google Photos provides a quick personalization route before you regenerate the finished video. This is useful when the automatic selection includes a person or image you do not want to appear.

Hide unwanted people or photos

  1. Open the Recap from the Memories carousel, Collections, or the December grid, depending on the time of year.
  2. Use the Recap’s editing or customization controls to hide particular people or individual photos.
  3. Review the remaining selection.
  4. Regenerate the video to create the updated version.

Hiding items for the Recap is a way to customize this video; it is not the same as deleting the original photos from your library. Keep the distinction in mind before confirming any broader library action. If you are editing for a particular audience, review the entire sequence after regeneration rather than assuming that removing one image changed nothing else.

Use CapCut only when you want more editing control

Google documents an optional handoff to CapCut, an independent app operated by ByteDance. This is not required to find or save a Recap, and Google’s documentation does not establish a broader partnership.

What the optional workflow does

  1. In Google Photos, choose the photos you want to use.
  2. Remove images you do not want to send onward, or add the images you do want included.
  3. Choose a Google Photos Recap template in CapCut when that option is presented.
  4. Select music from CapCut’s library and make the additional edits there.

Review the selection carefully before sending photos to another app. The more creative controls are useful for timing, music, and a different sequence, but they also move the editing step outside Google Photos and subject it to CapCut’s own account, privacy, and export behavior. CapCut is an optional route for additional control, not a fix for an unavailable Recap or a prerequisite for sharing one.

Save and share your Recap

Save it for dependable access

Use Google Photos’ save option from the Recap memory. A saved copy can be surfaced in the photo grid, which is especially helpful when the December carousel is no longer prominent. Save the video before changing accounts, clearing local app data, or assuming a notification will remain available. Saving does not change the seasonal eligibility rules, but it gives you a stable item to locate later.

Choose what to share

Google says the share menu can offer several formats:

  • A short clip instead of the entire year.
  • A collage or other smaller creation.
  • The full Recap video.

Select the format that matches the audience. A full Recap may include more people, locations, or private moments than a short clip. Check the preview and recipients before sending. If a recipient only needs one moment, a short clip limits what leaves your library; if the point is a complete annual record, choose the full video and confirm that it is the version you saved.

Find other saved creations related to the Recap

Not every item associated with a Recap is necessarily indexed under the same label. Google’s general Android Memories guidance provides a separate search route for creations you saved from featured Memories.

Search for saved creations

  1. Open Google Photos and go to the Photos view.
  2. Use search and type Creations.
  3. Alternatively, search for a specific creation type, such as Highlight videos.
  4. Open the result and save or share it as needed.

This search can locate saved creations, but it does not guarantee that every element of a Recap—such as each automatically generated component—will appear under that term. Use the Recap’s own card, the December grid, or Collections when you need the annual video itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the distinction clear: a seasonal memory is the presentation Google creates for the year, a saved video is a copy you deliberately placed in the photo grid, and a related creation may be a clip, collage, or highlight video. Searching for Creations is useful for the last category, not a replacement for the annual Recap route.

Platform limits: Android, iPhone, and desktop

Android

The Recap procedure currently documented by Google is for the Android Google Photos app. The locations above—Photos, the featured Memories carousel, Collections, and the December grid—are the relevant Android paths for the 2025 Recap.

iPhone and iPad

Google provides platform-specific Memories navigation for iOS, and labels can differ from Android. If your iPhone or iPad does not show the same controls, follow the current in-app Google Photos instructions for iOS rather than applying Android steps literally. The availability rules for a particular year can also differ from general Memories behavior. Do not infer that a general Memories feature on iOS guarantees access to the annual Recap.

Desktop web

Google Photos Help states: “Currently, Google Photos Recap isn’t available on desktop.” Do not expect to locate the annual Recap at photos.google.com. The web version can provide access to general featured Memories and ordinary photo management, but that does not establish desktop access to the annual Recap. If you need the annual video, use the supported mobile app path and save it there.

Keep a simple organization system for future Recaps

Once you have found and saved the video, a small routine prevents the same search next year:

  1. Save the finished Recap to the photo grid.
  2. Leave the original year’s photos backed up in the account that generated it.
  3. Use a recognizable album or other in-app organization method if you want all annual videos together.
  4. Search Creations or Highlight videos for related saved items, while using the December grid for the annual Recap itself.
  5. When sharing, export or send the version you actually intend to keep, such as the full video or a shorter clip.

This approach separates three things that are easy to confuse: the seasonal Recap card, the saved video in your photo grid, and other creations generated from Memories. It also gives you a fallback when a later year changes the featured-carousel position.

What to check before contacting support

  • The app is current and you are signed into the intended account.
  • The account contains enough backed-up photos spread through the relevant year.
  • Face Groups is enabled and your face is selected.
  • You checked the correct seasonal location for the date: carousel and Collections in December, then the December grid after New Year’s.
  • You are looking in the mobile app, because desktop Recap access is not currently supported.
  • You have distinguished a missing annual Recap from a saved creation that may be found through a Creations search.

If those checks pass and the current year’s documentation still indicates that you should be eligible, use Google Photos’ current help and support channels. Avoid deleting photos or changing accounts as a troubleshooting shortcut; either action can make it harder to determine whether the original eligibility conditions were met.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my Google Photos Recap?

On Android, open Google Photos, tap Photos, and check the featured Memories carousel. For the 2025 Recap, Google places a newly available Recap at the front. After you watch it during December, check the back of the carousel and Collections. After New Year’s, look at the top of the December section in the Photos grid.

How do I find my Recap after the new year?

Open Photos and scroll to December in the photo grid. Google says the Recap is pinned at the top of that month after the new year begins. If you previously used the save option, the saved video should also be available through the photo grid.

Can I save or share my Google Photos Recap?

Yes. Google describes saving the Recap and sharing a short clip, collage, or the full video. Save it to make the photo-grid route easier to use later, then inspect the preview and recipient list before sharing because the full video may contain more personal moments than a short clip.

Why did my Recap disappear from the front of Memories?

Viewing it changes its seasonal position. During December, Google says a viewed Recap moves to the back of the featured Memories carousel and is pinned in Collections. After New Year’s, the relevant location is the December section of the grid, not necessarily the front carousel card.

Do I need Gemini features to receive a Recap?

No universal Gemini requirement is stated. Google describes Gemini features as an enhanced experience in the United States. The listed prerequisites are enough photos across the year, Face Groups enabled with your face selected, the latest Photos app, and backup enabled for that year’s content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Google Photos Recap available on a computer?

Not currently. Google Photos Help explicitly says that Google Photos Recap is not available on desktop. General featured Memories may be visible on the web, but that does not provide access to the annual Recap.

Can I edit the people or photos in the video?

Google Photos lets you hide particular people or photos and then regenerate the Recap. This customizes the video without deleting the original images from your library. For additional sequencing and music controls, Google documents an optional CapCut workflow.

Where are my other saved Memory creations?

In the Android Photos view, search for Creations or for a type such as Highlight videos. That route can find saved creations, but it does not promise that every automatically generated part of an annual Recap will be indexed there. Use the Recap card or December grid for the annual video itself.

What if I changed Face Groups or backup today?

Give Google Photos time to process the updated face grouping or newly backed-up photos. Then reopen the current Photos view and check the seasonal location that matches the date. If the Recap still does not appear, review the current year’s Google Photos Help instructions because eligibility and labels can change.

The Bottom Line

Find the 2025 Recap in the Android Photos app’s Memories carousel, then use the back of the carousel or Collections during December and the December grid after New Year’s. Keep Face Groups, backup, the current app, and the correct Google Account in order; save the video for easier access, and use sharing, Google Photos editing, or optional CapCut tools according to how much control you need.
