Amazon’s account-level control is called Your Ads Privacy Choices. Start with Amazon’s Privacy Notice, follow that link, select your country if prompted, and review the available personalized-advertising option. If you use Alexa, change its separate interest-based-ad setting in the Alexa app or on an Echo Show. These choices limit how specified ads are personalized; they do not remove every advertisement from Amazon devices and services.
Start with Your Ads Privacy Choices
Amazon names its account-level advertising control Your Ads Privacy Choices. The company’s Privacy Notice says, “You may adjust your personalized advertising preferences by visiting Your Ads Privacy Choices.” The notice is the reliable starting point because Amazon can present different destinations or labels by country and account status.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Open Amazon’s Amazon.com Privacy Notice.
- Find the section about advertising, personalized advertising, or advertising preferences.
- Select the link labeled Your Ads Privacy Choices.
- Sign in if Amazon requests it, then read the choice shown for your account and submit the preference you want.
- Save or confirm the change if the page provides a confirmation control. Keep the confirmation page or date if you need to document the change.
The exact signed-in flow is not guaranteed to be identical in every country. Amazon Ads maintains a country selector on its Advertising Preferences page. Choose your country before relying on a menu label or destination, and follow the instructions displayed for that region.
What this account setting is for
Amazon describes interest-based advertising as ads for features, products, or services that may interest you. The preference governs whether the specified Amazon advertising experience uses information about your interests to personalize those ads. It is not a general privacy switch for every Amazon activity, and it is not a request to delete your account data.

“Personalized,” “interest-based,” and “suggested” can appear together in Amazon’s explanations, but the important question is the scope named next to the control. A setting for Amazon-delivered ads on Alexa is narrower than the account-level destination, while a third-party skill’s advertising option is narrower still. Read the surrounding description before selecting a switch instead of treating every advertising label as interchangeable.
What Amazon says about advertising information
In the scope described by its Privacy Notice, Amazon says advertising identifiers may be shared with advertising companies to serve or measure Amazon ads. Amazon also says it does not share names or other information that directly identifies customers for that purpose, and does not share specific shopping actions such as purchases, product views, or searches in the described context. Those statements apply to the practices and scope set out in the notice; they should not be generalized to every advertiser, service, or third-party Alexa skill.
An advertising identifier is a technical identifier used in an advertising context; it is not the same thing as publishing your name to an advertiser. Amazon’s wording is limited to the practices described in its notice, so it is more accurate to quote that boundary than to promise that no information is ever shared anywhere. If your concern involves a particular skill or service, inspect that service’s own permissions and privacy explanation as well.

Manage interest-based ads delivered through Alexa
Alexa has a separate preference for receiving interest-based ads delivered by Amazon. Changing the account-level choice does not substitute for reviewing this Alexa setting. Amazon documents two routes in its help page, Manage Ads and Other Suggested Content on Your Echo Devices with a Screen.
Using the Alexa mobile app
- Open the Alexa app and tap More.
- Choose Alexa Privacy.
- Open Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Find the advertising or suggested-content preference and turn off receiving interest-based ads delivered by Amazon, if that is the choice you want.
- Read any confirmation text before leaving the page. If several household profiles or accounts use Alexa, repeat the review for each relevant account.
Amazon may revise app navigation, so a current label can differ slightly from this path. If a menu does not appear, use the Alexa app’s privacy section and the current Amazon help instructions rather than assuming the setting has been removed.
Using an Echo Show
- Say “Open settings”, or swipe down from the top of the Echo Show screen and select Settings.
- Choose Alexa Privacy or, on some models, Privacy and Permissions.
- Select Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Open the advertising preference and disable receiving interest-based ads delivered by Amazon, if available.
- Return to the home screen after the device confirms or records the choice.
Amazon warns that menu items can vary on some Echo devices. Model, software version, country, and account configuration can all affect what you see. The wording above describes Amazon’s documented routes, not a guarantee that every Echo Show displays every label.
If the setting is missing
First confirm that you are signed in to the Amazon account associated with the Alexa app or device. Then check the privacy area rather than a shopping, content, or notification menu. If the app and device show different choices, record which one you changed and use Amazon’s current Echo help page to interpret the difference. Country-specific availability can also explain why an option documented for one region is not displayed in another.

Know what turning off the Alexa preference changes
The Alexa control limits the use of your interests for the Amazon-delivered advertising experience covered by that control. It does not make Alexa or an Echo Show ad-free.
- You may still receive ads that are not based on your interests.
- Ads on an Echo Show cannot be turned off completely according to Amazon’s help guidance.
- On an Echo Show, you can hide a particular ad for 30 days. That is a temporary hide action for that ad, not a permanent advertising opt-out.
- The Alexa preference does not apply to Amazon-delivered ads in other services such as Amazon Music and Fire TV.
Consequently, seeing an ad after changing the preference is not by itself proof that the setting failed. First identify where the ad appeared and whether it was an Amazon-delivered, interest-based ad covered by the setting.
The 30-day hide control is useful when one promotion is especially distracting, but it is a content-level action rather than a change to your account preference. When the period ends, the same or another ad may be eligible to appear under the applicable rules. Do not confuse hiding one ad with disabling interest-based delivery.
Third-party Alexa skills have separate controls
Alexa skills supplied by third parties can have their own advertising identifiers and preference mechanisms. Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs says customers can manage skill permissions and ad preferences in Alexa privacy settings. Review those controls separately if a skill shows advertising or uses an advertising identifier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor technical background, Amazon’s developer documentation, About Alexa Advertising ID (last updated May 29, 2024), explains how the Alexa advertising identifier and preference signaling work for developers. A change to Amazon’s account-level or Alexa-delivered-ad preference should not be treated as a universal instruction to every skill developer. Check the skill’s permissions and the choices presented in Alexa privacy settings.
This separation matters when troubleshooting. If an ad appears only while a particular skill is running, changing the Amazon-delivered Alexa preference may not affect it. Review the skill’s permission entry, advertising choice, and any information the skill provides about its own provider. Removing or disabling a skill is a different action from changing an advertising preference, and neither action should be assumed to alter unrelated Amazon services.
Which setting covers which ads?
| Setting | Where it lives | Coverage | What can remain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your Ads Privacy Choices | Amazon account, reached through the Amazon Privacy Notice | The account-level personalized-advertising choice described by Amazon for your country | Ads outside the covered preference, and advertising experiences governed by separate services or providers |
| Alexa interest-based ads | Alexa app: More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data; or Echo Show privacy settings | Amazon-delivered interest-based ads on Alexa devices and experiences covered by that setting | Non-interest-based ads; Echo Show ads; ads in other Amazon services such as Amazon Music and Fire TV |
| Third-party Alexa skill preferences | Alexa privacy settings, including skill permissions and advertising choices | Controls exposed for an individual third-party skill and its advertising identifier use | Advertising or data practices not controlled by that skill setting |
| Other Amazon services | The service’s own account, app, or device controls | Only the service and advertising experience named by its control | Ads governed by another service, device, country-specific rule, or provider |
The table reflects Amazon’s stated scope. A preference should be read by its exact wording rather than assumed to cover every screen signed in to the same Amazon account.

Use the ad’s location as a diagnostic clue
When an ad remains, write down the surface where it appeared: an Amazon account page, an Echo Show screen, an Alexa response, Amazon Music, Fire TV, or a named skill. That single detail narrows which control to inspect. The same household can see different advertising experiences because each service, device, or skill may apply a different preference.

Amazon Ads’ Advertising Preferences page asks visitors to select a country and lists destinations across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and South America. The presence of a country selector means a link copied from another region is not a dependable shortcut. Select the country in which the relevant Amazon account or service is used, then follow the instructions shown there.
Amazon’s published routes are guidance, not a promise that every country has identical wording or identical controls. Labels can also change when Amazon updates the Alexa app, account pages, or device software. If a screen differs, use the current official help page as the authority and match the setting by its description and scope, not only by its position in a menu.
How to verify that your preference is set
- Record the location. Note whether you changed Your Ads Privacy Choices, the Alexa preference, a skill-specific option, or another service’s setting.
- Record the account and country. A household can have multiple Amazon accounts or profiles, and Amazon presents country-specific preference information.
- Look for confirmation. Reopen the relevant page or device menu and check that the selected state is still shown after leaving and returning.
- Test the correct surface. If you changed an Alexa setting, evaluate an Alexa or Echo Show experience rather than expecting a change in Amazon Music or Fire TV.
- Allow for ordinary ads. A remaining ad may be non-interest-based, outside the setting’s scope, or supplied by a third-party skill.
Keep a brief record if you are managing settings for a family or workplace: the account, country, device or service, date, and exact option changed. This prevents repeating the same change on the wrong profile and gives you a clear reference if the interface later changes.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Your Ads Privacy Choices link is hard to find
Return to the current Amazon Privacy Notice and search within the page for “personalized advertising” or “Your Ads Privacy Choices.” Do not use an old bookmark copied from another country. Amazon’s Advertising Preferences page is the appropriate place to select your country and locate the destination intended for that region.

The Alexa menu names do not match
Amazon explicitly notes that Echo device menu items can vary. In the app, begin at More and look for Alexa Privacy; on an Echo Show, open Settings and look for Alexa Privacy or Privacy and Permissions. Then locate Manage Your Alexa Data. If the labels still differ, consult the current Echo help page linked above and use the privacy category rather than a similarly named advertising or shopping menu.
Ads continue after I opted out
Check the ad’s location and type before changing anything again. Amazon says non-interest-based ads can continue, Echo Show ads cannot be disabled entirely, and the Alexa choice does not cover Amazon Music or Fire TV. A third-party skill can also have separate controls. These are scope limits, not necessarily a failed account update.

I want my information deleted, not merely less-personalized ads
An advertising preference controls the personalization described by that preference. It is not a deletion request and does not necessarily erase browsing, purchase, voice, device, or account records. Use the privacy and data-management choices Amazon provides for the separate action you need.
Several people share one Echo device
Check which Amazon account or profile is active when you change the setting. A device can be shared while people use different accounts, and a preference changed for one account should not be assumed to change another person’s account.
I changed the account setting but not Alexa
That is expected when the controls are separate. Reopen Alexa Privacy in the app or on the Echo Show and review Manage Your Alexa Data. Conversely, changing the Alexa preference does not replace the account-level Your Ads Privacy Choices review.
I cannot find a control for Amazon Music or Fire TV
The Alexa preference does not apply to Amazon-delivered ads in those services. Look for the service’s own privacy or advertising controls and read the scope displayed there. Do not infer that a setting is broken simply because another Amazon product continues to show advertising.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to assume
- Do not assume opting out removes every ad; Amazon expressly says non-interest-based ads may remain.
- Do not assume an Echo Show can be made completely ad-free; Amazon says its ads cannot be turned off, although an individual ad can be hidden for 30 days.
- Do not assume one account choice covers Alexa, Amazon Music, Fire TV, every app, every device, and every skill.
- Do not assume a third-party skill follows Amazon’s own account-level preference; skill permissions and advertising controls are separate.
- Do not assume an advertising opt-out deletes personal data or shopping, voice, device, or account records.
- Do not assume instructions from another country or an older app version will match your screen.
A practical review checklist
- Open the current Amazon Privacy Notice and select Your Ads Privacy Choices.
- Select your country on Amazon’s advertising-preference destination when prompted.
- Set the account-level personalized-advertising choice and note the confirmation.
- In Alexa, open More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data and review the interest-based-ad preference.
- On an Echo Show, use Settings > Alexa Privacy or Privacy and Permissions > Manage Your Alexa Data if you prefer the device route.
- Review permissions and advertising choices for third-party skills.
- Identify the service where any remaining ad appears before troubleshooting.
- Do not expect these settings to remove all ads or to cover Amazon Music, Fire TV, every app, every device, or every advertising provider.
Bottom line on Amazon’s ad controls
Use Your Ads Privacy Choices for the main Amazon account preference, then review Alexa separately if you use Echo devices. Treat each setting as a scoped choice: it can change whether covered ads are personalized, but it does not function as a universal ad blocker. Country-specific pages, changing interface labels, Echo Show limitations, other Amazon services, and third-party Alexa skills all require their own checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off personalized ads on Amazon?
Open Amazon’s Privacy Notice, choose Your Ads Privacy Choices, select your country if prompted, and submit the account-level preference shown for your region. This changes the covered personalization choice; it does not remove every Amazon advertisement.
Recommended Free Tools
Does turning off personalized ads remove ads from an Echo Show?
No. Amazon says Echo Show ads cannot be turned off completely. You may still see non-interest-based ads, and you can hide a specific ad for 30 days.
Best Value
Does the Alexa ad setting cover Amazon Music and Fire TV?
No. Amazon says the Alexa preference for Amazon-delivered interest-based ads does not apply to Amazon-delivered ads in services such as Amazon Music and Fire TV.
Why am I still seeing an ad after changing the preference?
The ad may be non-interest-based, shown on a service outside the setting’s scope, displayed on an Echo Show, or supplied by a third-party Alexa skill with separate controls. Check where the ad appeared and reopen the relevant preference.
Are Alexa skill advertising settings separate?
Yes. Amazon says customers can manage skill permissions and ad preferences in Alexa privacy settings. A third-party skill may also use its own advertising identifier and preference mechanism.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will Amazon’s advertising opt-out delete my account data?
No. An advertising preference concerns personalization for the covered advertising experience. It is not a deletion request and does not necessarily erase browsing, purchase, voice, device, or account records.
Why does my Amazon menu look different?
Amazon documents country-specific preference destinations, and Alexa menu items can vary by device. App updates, device software, account configuration, and region can change labels. Use the current official help page and match the setting by its description.
Can I change the setting for everyone who shares my Echo?
Check the active Amazon account or profile first. A shared device can be used by people with different accounts, and changing one account’s preference should not be assumed to change another person’s choice.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with Amazon’s Your Ads Privacy Choices, then review Alexa’s separate interest-based-ad setting. Confirm the country, account, device, and service involved, and remember that non-interest-based ads, Echo Show ads, other Amazon services, and third-party skills can remain outside the choice you changed.
