How to Find and Listen to a Game’s Soundtrack Outside the Game

To listen to a game soundtrack away from the game, search the exact title with “official soundtrack” or “original soundtrack”, then confirm the album through the publisher, developer, composer, or another rights holder. From there, choose the format that fits: streaming, a purchased download, a Steam soundtrack product, Nintendo Music, or (for selected titles) a physical record. Availability, track selection, audio quality, offline access, country support, and reuse rights all vary by game.

How do I listen to a game’s soundtrack outside the game?

Start with the game’s exact name rather than a character, level, or composer alone. Add “official soundtrack,” “original soundtrack,” or “OST” to the search. Open the game’s official site, publisher or developer news page, composer page, or the page for the album itself. Those sources are the best way to distinguish a licensed release from a fan playlist, cover, remix, radio upload, or an incorrectly titled album.

Once you find a candidate release, check four details before pressing play or paying:

  • The album title and credited artist match the game you mean.
  • The release is an original soundtrack, selected-track compilation, arrangement album, or something else clearly identified.
  • The service or store is available in your country and supports your account.
  • The edition contains the tracks and audio format you actually want.

No universal soundtrack service has every game. A title may appear on one streaming platform but not another, be sold as a download without a streaming version, or be available only through a publisher’s service or a physical release.

Where can I find the official game soundtrack?

Use the rights holder’s announcement as your starting point

Official announcements often provide the most reliable route to the correct album and then point to the services carrying it. For example, Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe’s 2019 announcement linked selected soundtracks from Tekken, Dark Souls, Little Nightmares, Man of Medan, and Tales of Vesperia to streaming and download services. That announcement demonstrates the method, but it is dated: platform catalogs and regional rights can change, so verify the destination today.

A developer announcement for the Logic World Original Soundtrack, dated February 5, 2022, linked Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, SoundCloud, and YouTube. It described Bandcamp as offering a high-quality, DRM-free download. This is an example of one developer’s release strategy, not evidence that every game is on all of those services.

Search the exact album inside the service you already use

After finding an official announcement, search the album name—not only the game name—inside your preferred service. Compare the artist, cover art, publisher or label information, and track list with the official page. Several similarly named albums may exist, especially when a game has an original score, an “official soundtrack” volume, a live concert recording, and remix or arrangement albums.

Bandai Namco’s 2019 list included Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Napster, and Tidal for streaming, plus iTunes Store, Google Play, and Amazon Music among download options. Treat those as examples of the services used for the selected releases at that time. They do not establish current availability for another title or another country.

Check the composer or studio page when the publisher page is hard to find

Composers sometimes maintain a discography that identifies the correct album and release name. Use that information to cross-check a store listing, but still confirm that the page represents an authorized release. A composer’s page can also reveal whether you are looking at the full score, a shortened commercial album, or a separate arrangement.

How to tell whether a soundtrack release is complete and official

“Soundtrack” does not always mean every piece of music heard in the game. A commercial album may contain selected themes, while a game’s internal music files include loops, variations, ambient layers, menu cues, licensed songs, and regional versions. Read the track list and edition notes before assuming it is complete.

Check the release type

  • Original soundtrack (OST): Usually the original score or a selected portion of it.
  • Selected tracks or highlights: A shorter album that may omit substantial in-game music.
  • Arrangement, remix, or orchestral album: New performances or reworked versions rather than the exact game recordings.
  • Deluxe, expanded, or volume releases: May add music from downloadable content, expansions, or later chapters.
  • Licensed-song compilation: Music licensed for the game, which can have different distribution rights from the original score.

Compare the metadata

Match the game title, composer or performers, publisher, release year, and track names. Be cautious when a service shows an album uploaded by an unverified account, has no label information, or combines unrelated games under one artist. A familiar cover image alone is not proof of authenticity.

Streaming and purchased downloads: what changes?

Streaming is convenient when you already pay for a supported service, but the album can disappear, change by country, or become unavailable if licensing changes. A purchased download gives you a local copy under the store’s terms and may be preferable when you want dependable offline playback. Store policies differ on file formats, redownloads, and device transfers.

When comparing a streaming listing with a download, check:

  • Whether the release is the same album and not a shortened or remastered edition.
  • Lossless, high-resolution, or standard compressed formats.
  • Whether downloads are DRM-free or tied to a store application.
  • Whether the purchase includes only the music or also bonus files such as artwork.
  • Whether offline listening is temporary (a subscription cache) or a permanent local file.

The official Logic World announcement illustrates the distinction: it identified Bandcamp as a high-quality, DRM-free download while also listing several streaming services. That arrangement is not a guarantee that other games offer the same rights or formats.

Using Steam for a game soundtrack

What Steam supports

Steamworks supports two broad soundtrack arrangements: a soundtrack associated with a Steam game and an independent soundtrack product for a game that is not sold on Steam. Steamworks describes soundtrack products as containing MP3 files, with an optional higher-quality or lossless version. The product can therefore be useful when you want files you can play locally rather than a subscription stream.

Steam release type What it means Important check
Soundtrack associated with a Steam game Music is offered alongside the game, commonly as downloadable content or a music app. Check whether the package is a current music app or legacy DLC.
Standalone soundtrack product A separate soundtrack listing that can exist even when the game itself is not on Steam. Confirm the product is for the exact game and includes the desired audio quality.

Install a purchased soundtrack

Steam Support says a purchased soundtrack is added to your library but still needs to be installed. Newer soundtracks are delivered as music apps. Some older releases remain DLC and may require the parent game to be installed before the files are accessible.

  1. Open the Steam client and sign in to the account that bought the soundtrack.
  2. Open Library and search for the soundtrack title or the associated game.
  3. Select the soundtrack entry and choose Install. If it appears as downloadable content, open the parent game’s properties and check its DLC section.
  4. After installation, open Steam’s music player or the soundtrack’s local installation folder, depending on how that release is delivered.
  5. If the product offers higher-quality files, select the applicable option in Steam’s music settings before downloading or playing them.

Legacy behavior is the main source of confusion: an older soundtrack can be present in your account but not appear as a separate music app. If you own the game, install it first, then check its downloadable content and local files.

Nintendo Music for Nintendo soundtracks

Nintendo describes Nintendo Music as an exclusive service for Nintendo Switch Online members. Compatible smartphone and tablet users can stream tracks and download them for offline listening. Nintendo also says computer users can browse and listen in a web browser.

The service requires a Nintendo Account and an eligible Nintendo Switch Online membership. Compatible devices and internet access are required for the app, and Nintendo states that the service is not available in all countries. Check your local Nintendo account and membership page before relying on it for a trip or other offline use.

On the Nintendo page accessed October 13, 2026, Nintendo described the catalog as over 250 hours across more than 130 titles. Those are Nintendo’s figures on that page at the stated access date, not a launch statistic and not a promise that every Nintendo game is represented.

Offline listening in Nintendo Music

  1. Install the Nintendo Music app on a compatible smartphone or tablet.
  2. Sign in with the Nintendo Account attached to your Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  3. Find the game or album and select the download or offline option offered by the app.
  4. Test playback in airplane mode before traveling; an offline download is useful only if it has completed and remains available under the service’s rules.

Nintendo Music is a membership service, not a general-purpose file purchase. If you cancel eligibility or lose access to the account, your listening access may change.

Physical soundtrack editions and vinyl

A physical edition is worth considering when you collect game memorabilia, want a permanent object, or prefer listening without a streaming account. It is also the option most likely to have limited stock, regional shipping restrictions, and changing prices.

Nintendo’s US store lists The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Deluxe X8LP Boxset. Bandai Namco’s official European store lists vinyl editions for selected titles including Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Code Vein, and Little Nightmares. These examples prove that publisher-backed records exist for some games, not that a record is available for every soundtrack.

What to verify before buying a record

  • The exact game, edition, and number of discs.
  • Whether the set contains the complete soundtrack, selected tracks, or a special arrangement.
  • Current stock, preorder status, and shipping region.
  • The seller’s identity and whether the item is an official pressing.
  • Any differences between a deluxe box set and a standard release.

Inventory can change quickly. A store page that once listed a record does not establish that it is still in stock, and a marketplace listing may not be the same edition as the publisher’s release.

Compare your options before choosing

Option Best for Offline access Format or access model Main limitation
Official streaming listing Quick listening on devices you already use Depends on the service and subscription Stream; some services offer temporary offline caching Country catalogs and licensing can change
Purchased digital download Keeping local files or avoiding a subscription Usually yes after download Store-specific files; may be DRM-free or app-managed File quality, redownload rules, and DRM vary
Steam soundtrack Players who already use Steam or want a game-linked purchase Yes after installation MP3, with optional higher-quality or lossless files where offered Older DLC releases may require the parent game
Nintendo Music Nintendo Switch Online members using supported devices App downloads are supported Membership service; smartphone/tablet app and computer browser listening Country, account, membership, device, and catalog limits apply
Official physical edition Collectors and listeners who want a record Yes, once you own the item Vinyl or another physical album format Only selected games receive editions; stock and shipping vary

Use these comparison questions in order: Is it an official release for the exact game? Is it available in your country? Do you want streaming or ownership? Do you need offline playback? Is the album complete enough for your purpose? Does the physical edition exist and remain in stock? Finally, are you listening privately or planning to use the music publicly?

Troubleshooting when you cannot find the soundtrack

The game title returns only playlists or uploads

Add “official soundtrack” and search the publisher, developer, or composer’s name. Open the album details and compare its track list with an official announcement. Do not assume a playlist is authorized because it uses the game’s artwork.

The album appears on one service but not another

That is normal for title-specific licensing. Check the official release page for alternate services, then verify your country’s catalog. If no current official listing exists, the album may have been removed, region-limited, or never released commercially.

You bought a Steam soundtrack but cannot play it

Look in Steam Library rather than only the game’s store page. Install the music app if one exists. For a legacy DLC release, install the associated game and inspect its DLC and local files. Confirm that you are signed in to the purchasing account.

The Nintendo Music download is unavailable

Check Nintendo Switch Online membership, Nintendo Account sign-in, country availability, device compatibility, and internet access. Offline downloads are handled in the app; a computer browser is described for listening, not as a replacement for the app’s mobile download feature.

You found a physical listing but cannot order it

Check the publisher’s regional store, edition status, stock, and shipping countries. A sold-out item may have no authorized replacement, and a marketplace listing can differ in pressing, completeness, or authenticity.

Listening is not the same as permission to reuse the music

A subscription, download, Steam purchase, Nintendo Music membership, or vinyl record gives you a way to listen under that service’s terms. It does not automatically grant permission to place the music in a livestream, video, podcast, game project, or other public work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official distribution sources establish access and playback, not a blanket reuse license. If you plan to publish or monetize a recording, check the particular game publisher’s current creator policy and the rules of the platform where you will post it. Rights can differ for the original score, licensed songs, recordings, and a specific territory. Treat this as a separate permissions question rather than an extension of your listening purchase.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Write the exact game title and search it with “official soundtrack” or “original soundtrack.”
  2. Confirm the album through the publisher, developer, composer, or official release announcement.
  3. Identify whether it is a full OST, selected tracks, an arrangement, or a licensed-song compilation.
  4. Check your country, account, and service requirements.
  5. Choose streaming, a download, Steam, Nintendo Music, or a physical edition based on offline and ownership needs.
  6. For Steam, install the soundtrack and investigate legacy DLC if no music app appears.
  7. For Nintendo Music, verify membership and download tracks in the compatible mobile app.
  8. For vinyl, confirm edition, track selection, stock, seller, and shipping region.
  9. If the music will appear in anything public, obtain separate reuse permission.
