  • perfmon /res opens Resource View.
  • perfmon /rel opens Reliability Monitor.
  • perfmon /report runs the System Diagnostics Data Collector Set and displays its report.

These options are documented in Microsoft’s command reference.

What Performance Monitor is for

Performance Monitor, often called PerfMon, is a Windows graphical tool for viewing and collecting performance-counter data. Counters expose measurements such as processor, memory, and disk activity. The snap-in also provides Data Collector Sets for recording selected counters and Reports for reviewing collected data. See Microsoft’s overview of performance counters.

Use it when you want to watch counter values or capture data over time, particularly if an issue is intermittent and hard to catch live. Microsoft cautions that performance counters are intended for administrative and diagnostic collection—not high-frequency collection more often than once per second or application profiling. See Microsoft’s performance-counter guidance.

When to use another built-in monitoring tool

Tool Best suited to
Performance Monitor Live performance-counter graphs, saved counter collections, and reports.
Resource Monitor Resource-oriented inspection.
Task Manager A quick overview of system activity.
Reliability Monitor Reliability history; open it with perfmon /rel.

These are related but distinct tools; a quick overview or reliability timeline does not replace a recorded counter collection. Microsoft’s command documentation covers the launch modes, while its troubleshooting guidance describes longer-running collections for transient issues in supported Windows Server environments. Those advanced procedures are Server-scoped and are not Windows 11 instructions.
