If an app is installed but not visible as a Start-menu pin, press the Windows key and search for its name first. If search does not find it, check All apps, verify it under Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11), or open the built-in Apps folder with shell:AppsFolder. These routes distinguish a missing shortcut from an app that is not installed or will not run.
What a missing Start item usually means
A Start-menu pin is only one shortcut to an application. Removing a pin does not uninstall the program, and the Start layout is separate from the complete inventory of installed software. Windows provides several discovery surfaces, each answering a different question:

| Route | Best use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Start search | Fastest launch when you know the app name | Results can mix applications with documents and web results, so confirm that the selected result is the app. |
| All apps or the alphabetical list | Browsing when the exact name is uncertain | Windows 11 and Windows 10 use different labels and layouts; Windows 10 can group entries in folders. |
| Installed apps in Settings | Checking whether Windows 11 recognizes the app as installed | This is an inventory and maintenance list, not the same thing as the Start pin list. |
| AppsFolder | Alternative list and launch surface | The built-in folder can also create a desktop shortcut. |
| Repair or Control Panel maintenance | Fixing an app that is listed but will not open | These are troubleshooting tools, not discovery methods, and they are not available for every program. |
Use the routes in that order: search, browse, verify installation, then troubleshoot launching. The menu names below are version-specific and can change with Windows updates. All of these methods are built into Windows; you do not need a launcher utility or paid software.

Find and open the app with Start search
- Press the Windows key, or select Start.
- Type the app’s name. You do not need to open a separate search window.
- Inspect the result and choose the entry identified as an app, rather than a document or web result with a similar name.
- Press Enter or select the result with the mouse.
Microsoft describes Start search as the quick way to find an app or perform an action. Its support guidance is available in Microsoft’s Start-menu navigation instructions. If the app opens, it was installed and usable; only its pin or visible shortcut was missing.

If search returns a similarly named item
Search may show a file, a web suggestion, or another program before the application you want. Type the full product name, include the publisher name if necessary, and read the result type before pressing Enter. Do not assume that a web result or a document proves the app is installed. A product may also appear under a shortened publisher name or a suite name rather than the name printed on its installer, so try both names when you are unsure.
Pin the app after you find it
Once the correct app opens or appears in results, open its context menu and choose the available option to pin it to Start or the taskbar. Pinning changes the shortcut layout; it does not change the installation itself. If the pin later disappears, you can return to search, All apps, or AppsFolder without reinstalling the program.
Browse the complete app list
Windows 11: use All apps
- Open Start.
- Select All apps.
- Scroll through the list or use the alphabetical navigation to jump to the app’s first letter.
- Select the app to launch it.
Windows 11’s Start interface can present installed apps in category, grid, or list views, depending on the current interface. A missing pin therefore does not establish that the app is absent. Microsoft’s overview of Start organization and pinning is in Customize the Windows Start Menu.
If you remember only the publisher or the first letter, browsing is often more reliable than guessing a search phrase. Check folders or grouped entries as well as the top-level list. A program can be present in All apps even when it is not in the pinned area displayed when Start first opens.
Windows 10: use the alphabetical Start list
- Select Start.
- Scroll the app list, which Microsoft describes as alphabetical and inclusive of every app installed on the computer.
- Use the first-letter key tip when it appears to jump to a letter.
- If the program is inside a Start folder, expand that folder and select the program.
The Windows 10 list can look different from Windows 11’s All apps view, so do not expect the same button or layout. If the app is not in this list, continue with the installation check rather than concluding that a shortcut is merely hidden.
Check whether Windows 11 considers the app installed
- Open Start and choose Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search or scroll for the program’s name.
The Microsoft guide to checking installed apps documents this Windows 11 path. Seeing the app here confirms that Windows has an installed-app entry even if no Start pin exists. Not seeing it means you should check the app’s installer, licensing account, or the correct Windows user before treating the issue as a broken Start shortcut.
Windows 10 does not use this exact Settings > Apps > Installed apps label. Use its Start list or the program’s own installer and Control Panel entry instead. Avoid applying Windows 11 menu instructions to Windows 10 verbatim.

Installed apps is also useful for separating discovery from maintenance. If the entry is present, record its exact displayed name before searching again; that spelling may differ from the desktop shortcut or marketing name. If it is absent from both Installed apps and the Start surfaces, Windows may not have an installed entry for the account you are using.
Open the built-in Apps folder with shell:AppsFolder
AppsFolder is a separate Windows shell location that lists applications available to the current device. It is useful when Start search or the Start layout is not showing the program.
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
shell:AppsFolderexactly, including the colon. - Press Enter.
- Browse to the app and double-click it, or select it and press Enter.
Microsoft documents this location as an installed-application list in its startup-application guidance and in the Start-menu accessibility instructions. It is a built-in Windows route, not a third-party launcher.
Create a desktop shortcut from AppsFolder
- In AppsFolder, locate the application.
- Right-click it (or open its context menu with the keyboard).
- Choose the option to create a desktop shortcut.
- Confirm the prompt if Windows says that it cannot create the shortcut in this folder and offers to place it on the desktop.
This gives you a direct launch icon while you decide whether to pin the app to Start. If the app is listed but launching it produces an error, move to the repair steps instead of repeatedly recreating shortcuts. Recreating a shortcut cannot repair damaged application files.

Discovery and repair are different problems. If the app is present in search, All apps, Installed apps, or AppsFolder but nothing happens when you launch it, use the maintenance option appropriate to its type.
Repair a Windows 11 app from Settings
- Open Settings from Start.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app and open its More menu (the three-dot button).
- Select Advanced options, if that entry is available.
- Choose Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Try launching the app again from Start search or AppsFolder.
Not every app exposes Advanced options or Repair. If Repair is missing or does not resolve the launch failure, Microsoft recommends trying Reset from the same page when it is offered. Review the app’s own documentation first: Reset can affect app data or settings, and its exact effect varies by application. Microsoft’s current procedure is in Repair apps and programs in Windows.
Repair is the less disruptive first choice because it is attempted before Reset in Microsoft’s sequence. Do not interpret the absence of a Repair button as proof that the app is missing; it usually means that this app does not expose those Windows maintenance controls.

Repair a traditional desktop program through Control Panel
Many desktop programs do not provide the Windows 11 Advanced options page. For those programs:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Search Start for Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Find the program in the installed-program list.
- Right-click it and choose Repair or Change, if either option is offered.
- Follow the program’s maintenance wizard, then launch it again.
The available command depends on the program’s installer. A missing Repair or Change option is not proof that the program is uninstalled; it means that this installer does not expose that maintenance path. If the program is listed but its wizard offers only removal, consult the program maker’s installer instructions rather than repeatedly creating Start shortcuts.
If the missing app is Microsoft Store
The Microsoft Store has a specific set of visibility causes:
- It may only be unpinned. Search Start for Microsoft Store. If it appears, open it and pin it again from its context menu.
- The account may not be signed in. Check that Windows is using the Microsoft account associated with the Store installation.
- A work administrator may have disabled it. On a managed company or school device, ask the administrator whether Store access is restricted.
These checks come from Microsoft’s Can’t find Microsoft Store app guidance. Do not install a replacement Store utility merely because its pin is absent; first establish whether the Store is hidden, account-dependent, or policy-disabled. On a managed device, policy restrictions require the administrator’s action rather than a new shortcut.
Windows 10: an important support limitation
Windows 10 PCs continue to run, but Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2025. After that date Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The Start-list and Control Panel steps above can still help you find an installed program, but they do not restore security support.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft’s Start-menu documentation includes the lifecycle notice in Customize the Windows Start Menu, and its repair guidance repeats the limitation in Repair apps and programs in Windows. If a Windows 10 device is used for sensitive work, treat the end-of-support status as a separate upgrade or replacement decision rather than as a Start-menu defect.
A decision path for the common symptoms
| What you observe | Next action | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The app appears in search and opens | Use its context menu to pin it, or create a desktop shortcut through AppsFolder. | The installation is healthy; only the shortcut or pin was missing. |
| Search fails, but All apps lists it | Select it from All apps, then check AppsFolder if you want another shortcut. | Start search indexing or result display may be the issue, not the installation. |
| Start does not show it, but AppsFolder lists it | Launch it from AppsFolder and create a desktop shortcut. | Windows exposes the app through the shell even though Start is not presenting it normally. |
| Windows 11 Installed apps lists it, but launching fails | Try Advanced options > Repair, then Reset only if necessary and available. | The app is registered as installed; troubleshoot its files or data rather than reinstalling blindly. |
| Control Panel lists a desktop program, but it will not open | Right-click it in Programs and Features and use Repair or Change when offered. | The program’s installer provides its own maintenance route. |
| No discovery surface lists the app | Check the original installer, the account used to install it, and whether you are checking the correct Windows user. | Do not assume a missing pin; Windows may not have an installed entry for that app. |
| Only Microsoft Store is missing | Search for it, check the Microsoft account, and ask a work-device administrator about policy restrictions. | The Store may be unpinned, account-dependent, or intentionally disabled. |
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Confusing a pin with installation: an empty pinned area does not prove that the program was removed.
- Launching the wrong search result: documents and web results can share an app’s name.
- Using Windows 11 labels on Windows 10: Windows 10 has an alphabetical Start list and does not use the exact Installed apps path.
- Resetting too early: try Repair first where available and check what Reset may do to that app’s data.
- Assuming every installer has Repair: Control Panel commands depend on the desktop program’s installer.
- Ignoring account or policy scope: another Windows user may have a different installation view, and a work administrator can disable Store access.
- Buying a launcher: Start, Settings, File Explorer, and Control Panel already provide the needed discovery and maintenance routes.
How to prevent the problem from slowing you down again
- After confirming an app launches, pin it to Start or the taskbar from its Start-search context menu.
- For less frequently used programs, create a desktop shortcut from AppsFolder instead of filling the Start pinned area.
- Record the app’s exact name as shown in Installed apps or Programs and Features; searching a shortened nickname can return unrelated files or web results.
- On shared or managed computers, check which Windows account is signed in before assuming that another user’s installation should appear for you.
- When an app stops launching, try the least destructive repair option first and review what Reset does for that specific app before selecting it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an app disappear from Start when I unpin it?
No. Unpinning removes the shortcut from the pinned area; it does not uninstall the application. Use Start search, All apps, Installed apps, or AppsFolder to find it again.

What is the quickest way to open an app that is missing from Start?
Press the Windows key, type the app name, confirm the result is an application, and press Enter. Search is usually faster than browsing when you know the name.
Why can I see an app in AppsFolder but not in Start search?
AppsFolder and Start search are separate shell surfaces. Launch it from AppsFolder and create a desktop shortcut; the app can be installed even when Start is not presenting it in search.
Is Settings > Apps > Installed apps available on Windows 10?
That exact label is a Windows 11 path. On Windows 10, use the alphabetical Start list, the program’s installer, or Control Panel’s Programs and Features list.
Should I choose Repair or Reset first?
Choose Repair first when it is available. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, Reset may be offered, but check the app’s documentation because Reset can affect data or settings.
What if the app is listed but still will not launch?
For a Windows 11 app, try Settings > Apps > Installed apps > More > Advanced options > Repair. For a desktop program, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and choose Repair or Change when offered.
Why can’t I find Microsoft Store?
It may simply be unpinned. Search for Microsoft Store, check that the associated Microsoft account is signed in, and ask a work or school administrator whether Store access has been disabled.
Do I need third-party software or a paid launcher?
No. Windows includes Start search, All apps, Installed apps, AppsFolder, and Control Panel for finding, launching, and repairing installed programs.
Does Windows 10 still receive security fixes for this problem?
Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. PCs continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
The Bottom Line
A missing Start pin is usually a visibility issue, not proof of an uninstall. Try Start search, then All apps or the Windows 11 Installed apps list, and use shell:AppsFolder when Start is unhelpful. If the app is listed but will not open, use Repair before Reset or the desktop program’s Control Panel maintenance option. No paid launcher is required.
