Open Call of Duty’s Social or Friends menu and search for your friend’s full Activision ID, including the # and number suffix when one appears. Accept the request, then use the game’s Party or Manage Party controls to invite the friend or join their party.
The exact labels differ between Call of Duty titles, platforms and playlists. The reliable process is to add the person as an Activision friend first, then handle the party invitation and crossplay settings for the specific game you are both running.

What you need before searching
Friend discovery and party joining can fail even when the ID is correct. Check these conditions first:

- Compatible version: Install the same current game update. A pending update can prevent a party from forming.
- Activision account: Each player needs an Activision account linked to the platform account being used to play.
- Accurate identifier: Ask for the Activision ID exactly as it appears in the game or account page, not just the console, PC or platform display name.
- Online availability: The friend must be signed in and available to receive or accept an invitation.
- Crossplay support: If you are on different platforms, the title and selected playlist must allow cross-platform play.
Activision describes the Activision ID as the unique identifier by which players appear in-game and recognize one another. That is why an Activision search is more dependable than searching only a platform friend list.

Find your friend’s full Activision ID
Ask for the ID exactly as displayed
Have your friend open their account or in-game profile and send the complete Activision ID. A common format is DisplayName#1234567. The suffix distinguishes accounts that use the same visible name.
Do not add a suffix yourself or assume every account has one. Activision’s account guidance notes that some older IDs may not include a number suffix. Copy capitalization, punctuation and every character shown by the game.
Why a platform name may not be enough
Call of Duty can show both Activision friends and friends from the current platform. Two players may have identical platform names, or a platform name may not be searchable by someone using another system. Searching the Activision account uses the cross-platform identifier intended for this purpose.
How to confirm you have the right account
Compare the displayed name, platform indicator and any other profile details with what your friend told you. If several matching names appear, do not send requests to all of them. Ask your friend to confirm the exact spelling and suffix, then select the matching account. This prevents a request from going to an unrelated player who happens to use the same visible name.
Add the friend from the Social or Friends menu
General procedure
- Launch the same Call of Duty title as your friend and sign in.
- Open Social, Friends or the people/party icon shown on the main menu.
- Choose the option for adding, inviting or searching for a friend.
- Enter the complete Activision ID supplied by your friend.
- Select the matching account and send the friend request.
- Wait for the request to be accepted before attempting to join a private party.
Some releases call the search control “Invite Friends,” while others use “Add Friend” or a similar label. Follow the wording displayed in your title rather than assuming that a path from another Call of Duty release is identical.
Modern Warfare’s documented path
Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare support instructions, published October 27, 2019, specify Social > Friends > Invite Friends > Enter Activision Account for adding a cross-platform friend. This is a title-specific path from that release, not a universal menu map for every later game.
Check the request area
To see whether a request is waiting, return to the friend-request area in the Social menu. The same Modern Warfare instructions place received requests at Social > Friends > Invite Friends > Friend Request. Warzone also uses its Social menu for accepting invitations, although the labels and screen arrangement can change between updates.

Friend requests and party invitations are different notifications. A request adds the account to your friends list after acceptance; it does not automatically put either player in the other’s lobby. Complete the acceptance step first, then look for the party command.
Use recently played players when you do not know the ID
If you just played with someone and did not exchange IDs, open the Social menu and look for Recently Played, Recent Players or Recently Met Activision Players. Activision’s Warzone guidance says the Social menu can add players you recently played with; the Modern Warfare guide describes a recently met Activision players list as well.
- Open the Social/Friends screen after the match.
- Choose the recent-player list.
- Identify the correct player using the displayed name, platform and recent match context.
- Select the profile and send an Activision friend request.
Recent-player lists can contain many unfamiliar accounts, so verify the name before sending a request. If the player does not appear, ask for the Activision ID instead; the list is a convenience feature, not a guaranteed history of every match.
Use the friend list and platform list for different jobs
The Activision friends category is the useful list for cross-platform discovery. Your console or PC service may also show a platform-only friends category. Seeing someone in the latter does not necessarily mean the Call of Duty account is connected to your Activision friends list.

If a profile appears in one category but not the other, send or accept the Activision request and refresh Social before trying to invite the player.
Invite a friend to your party or join theirs
Adding a friend and joining a party are separate actions
A person can be on your Activision friends list without being in your current lobby. After the request is accepted, select the friend’s profile in Social and choose the available party invitation or join command. If your friend is leading the party, they can invite you from their own party screen.
Modern Warfare’s documented party sequence
In the Modern Warfare support procedure, the party leader opens Social > Party > Manage Party > Invite Players, selects friends and sends invitations. Party Settings controls who can enter or receive invitations. Newer titles may expose the same functions under different names, such as Manage Party, Invite to Party or a three-dot profile menu.

- Confirm the friend request has been accepted.
- Open Social and select the friend’s profile.
- Choose Invite to Party if you are the leader, or choose Join Party when the friend’s lobby allows it.
- If the option is unavailable, check the friend’s online state and your party privacy setting.
- Once both players are in the lobby, select the desired multiplayer mode and start matchmaking.
Party privacy can block a valid friend
A privacy setting that permits friends only, invites only or no joining can prevent entry even after the request is accepted. Ask the party leader to open the current title’s Party Settings and choose an option that permits the intended invitation. Exact privacy choices vary by release, so use the labels shown on that game’s screen.
Who should send the invitation?
Either player can usually initiate the invitation when both accounts are online, but the party leader controls the lobby’s privacy and playlist. If you cannot join, have the leader send a fresh invitation after confirming that the party is open to friends or invitees. If the leader changes, repeat the check on the new leader’s Party Settings.
Joining a friend on another platform
Check the four compatibility conditions

Compare both players against all four checks rather than changing one setting at random. A successful friend search proves only that the account was found; it does not prove that the selected mode supports crossplay or that the lobby is joinable.
Black Ops 6 and Warzone crossplay controls
Activision’s April 3, 2025 guidance for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Warzone documents console controls under Options > Settings > Account & Network. The available controls can differ between unranked and ranked playlists.
- Steam and Battle.net: Activision says these PC versions do not expose an in-game crossplay-disable setting.
- Xbox consoles: Console privacy controls take priority over the in-game setting.
- Microsoft Store and Xbox PC app: Manage the relevant crossplay permission through the Xbox PC app.
- Crossplay disabled: In the documented Black Ops 6 settings, disabling crossplay can restrict matchmaking to the current platform, which may prevent a friend on another platform from joining the same session.
These controls are specific to the documented Black Ops 6/Warzone setup. Do not assume that a setting or menu location from that article applies unchanged to another Call of Duty release.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

Refresh the Social list safely
If a newly accepted friend is not visible, close and reopen the Social menu, return to the main lobby, or restart the game. These actions refresh the account and presence list without changing account links. Avoid unlinking accounts merely to make a friend search work.
When a playlist is the issue
Try a compatible unranked playlist if the game indicates that ranked or another specialized mode has different crossplay rules. This is a test of playlist compatibility, not a permanent requirement; return to the mode you want after confirming that both accounts can share a lobby.

Do not relink accounts casually
Activision’s Warzone support guidance warns that linking a PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net or Steam account to a different Activision account does not transfer progress. If the wrong Activision account is connected, record which account owns the progress and contact official support before unlinking anything. Rebinding accounts as a quick troubleshooting step can leave progression attached to the original account.
Account linking is separate from adding a friend. A failed search or party invite normally calls for checking the ID, request status, title, playlist and privacy controls—not changing the account that contains your progression.

Activision’s current interface can change with updates, and the cited support pages do not establish one universal menu flow for every Call of Duty release. When a label differs, stay in the Social/Friends area and look for the equivalent friend-search, request, Party or Manage Party control.
Cost and equipment
No separate purchase is required to find a friend, send an Activision request or invite someone to a party. A console or PC and the game you intend to play are, of course, needed to use multiplayer, but a headset, controller upgrade or printed guide is not a requirement for this account and menu process.
