To play immediately with other people, open Community > Customs Browser and join a session that is already in progress. These are separate paths: File Share finds creations, while Customs Browser finds live games.
Choose the right route first
Your goal determines which menu to use. A community creation is a saved map, mode or Prefab. A Customs Browser listing is a live Custom Game using content that has already been selected by a host.

| What you want to do | Menu path | What happens | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discover a Forge map, mode or Prefab | Community > Community File Share | Search, inspect and bookmark a saved creation. | Finding a file does not place you in a live game. |
| Play with strangers immediately | Community > Customs Browser | Choose an active session and select Join. | Only sessions already in progress with available places are listed. |
| Play a particular creation with friends | Bookmark the file, then create a Custom Game | The fireteam leader selects the saved map and mode during setup. | You need a host and a group; the creation is not automatically matchmaking content. |
The official Halo Support Custom Game Browser overview describes the browser as a list of “currently active Custom Games that players can join immediately without waiting in a lobby.” That distinction explains most failed searches: a lobby that has not started is not a browser result.
What you need before searching
- These instructions apply to Halo Infinite, not automatically to Halo: The Master Chief Collection or another Halo title.
- Halo Infinite multiplayer and Forge are included with the game’s free-to-play multiplayer experience. You do not need a particular physical product to use the discovery and joining workflow described here.
- Stay online and allow the multiplayer menus to finish loading. Community listings, player counts and session availability are live data and can change while you browse.
Forge content is user-created. A file can be visible in File Share even when nobody is currently hosting a game with it, so discovery and joining should be treated as two different actions.

Find a community-made map, mode or Prefab
Open Community File Share
- Start Halo Infinite and open the main menu.
- Select Community.
- Open the Community File Share area. Its tiles are the main discovery surface for Forge creations.
Halo Support’s Forge overview identifies Community File Share as the place to discover popular Forge maps, modes and Prefabs. A map is the playable environment; a mode defines rules and objectives; a Prefab is a reusable Forge-built object or arrangement that can be used in a larger creation.
Use the curated and popularity tiles
The File Share presents several ways to browse:
- Recommended contains selections chosen by Halo Studios.
- Popular Maps and Popular Modes show the most-played items from the previous seven days.
- Popular Prefabs shows the most-bookmarked Prefabs from the previous seven days.
Those time windows describe how the popularity lists are calculated; they do not guarantee that a listed item has an active host or that it will remain available. Popularity is useful for finding proven starting points, while direct search is better when you already know a creator, title or keyword.
Search with Browse All
- From Community File Share, choose Browse All.
- Enter a file name, tag or keyword in the available search field.
- Review the results and open the item that matches the map or mode you want.
Search terms can describe the intended experience rather than the exact title. If you know only part of a file name, try that fragment first; if you know the theme or rules, use a descriptive keyword or tag. Results are still dependent on what is currently shared and searchable.

When you find a map or mode worth keeping, bookmark it from its file entry. Bookmarks give the fireteam leader a reliable way to select the creation later instead of searching again. The official Halo Infinite menus guide places saved items under Community > My Bookmarks. That area can contain bookmarked custom games, Prefabs and replays as well as maps and modes.

- Open the creation’s details from the File Share result.
- Choose the bookmark control.
- Later, return to Community > My Bookmarks to locate the saved file.
Bookmarking does not join a session. It only saves the creation for use in a Custom Game or for convenient reference.
Join a live community session through Customs Browser
Open the browser and read the listing
- From the main menu, select Community.
- Open Customs Browser.
- Review the displayed session cards, including their map and mode names, thumbnails and available player information.
The browser is for Custom Games that are already running. It is not a queue in which you reserve a place for a game that the host plans to start later.
Narrow the list with filters and sorting
Use the browser’s filters to reduce the list to sessions that fit your interests, such as a particular map or mode. Sorting can make a long list easier to scan. After changing a filter, refresh the browser so the displayed results reflect the current query. Refresh again whenever you suspect the list is stale: hosts can start, finish, fill or close sessions while you are looking at the page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The browser displays 12 sessions per page. That is a page limit, not a statement about how many Custom Games exist worldwide. If the session you expect is not on the first page, check additional pages and use narrower filters.

Join immediately or inspect first
- Select Join when the card shows the game you want and you are ready to enter.
- Select View Details when you want to inspect the session before committing. Details help you verify the map, mode and current availability.
A successful join takes you into the active Custom Game. If the session ends during the attempt, the browser may remove it before you connect; refresh and choose another currently listed session.
Arrange your own game with a community creation
Use this route when a specific map or mode matters more than joining whatever is live. You can organize the group yourself, invite friends and select the bookmarked content as fireteam leader.
Prepare the content
- Find the map or mode through Community > Community File Share > Browse All or one of the popularity tiles.
- Bookmark it.
- Confirm it appears under Community > My Bookmarks.
Create the Custom Game
- Form or join a fireteam with the players you want.
- Have the fireteam leader open the Custom Game setup from the multiplayer menus.
- Choose the map and mode selectors. The leader can select saved or bookmarked content, including Forge maps and modes.
- Configure the available game settings and invite anyone who is not already in the fireteam.
- Start the match when the group is ready.
Halo Support’s game modes guide documents Custom Games as a place to select maps and modes, while the Custom Game Browser overview confirms that Forge maps and modes are supported. Custom Games can combine maps and modes outside the combinations used by standard matchmaking playlists, which is why a community creation may offer rules or pairings you will not see in matchmaking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKnow what Custom Games do not provide
Custom Games do not award Match XP or advance Challenge progression. They are for playing the selected rules and content with a group, not for earning the progression associated with matchmaking. Set that expectation before organizing a session so players are joining for the custom experience itself.

Why a specific Customs Browser session is missing
The host has not started the game
A waiting lobby is not listed as an immediately joinable browser session. The host must start the Custom Game before it can appear. If a friend says they are “in customs” but you cannot find them, ask whether the match is actually in progress rather than waiting for more players.
The session is full
Full sessions are omitted from the joinable list. A listing can disappear between refreshes because another player filled the last place. Refresh after a short wait and look for another session, or ask the host to invite you if a place opens.
Your filters or page are hiding it
Remove overly specific filters, check the other pages, and refresh. A session may use a different map or mode name than the term you entered, or it may have changed state since the browser first loaded.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A friend’s Join option is missing or disabled
Halo Support notes that a missing or disabled Join option for a friend can mean that the friend’s fireteam is full. In that case, the player already in the group must make room or invite you after capacity changes; repeatedly refreshing your own browser will not bypass a full fireteam.

You were removed from the match
If you are booted from a session, you cannot rejoin that specific session on your own. Someone still in the session must invite you again. If the match has ended, its players remain in the same fireteam, and the leader can start another Custom Game with that group.

| Limit or display rule | Value | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions shown per Customs Browser page | 12 | Check additional pages and refresh when searching for a particular listing. |
| Players in one Custom Game session | Up to 24 | A session at capacity will not be joinable until a place becomes available. |
| Observers in one session | Up to 4 | Observer places are separate from the player total, but the session still has finite capacity. |
These are product limits described by Halo Support, not estimates of current player population. The number of visible sessions and open places changes continuously.
File Share versus Customs Browser: the practical difference
| Question | Community File Share | Customs Browser |
|---|---|---|
| What is being listed? | Saved community creations: maps, modes and Prefabs. | Active Custom Game sessions. |
| Can you search a creator’s file by name, tag or keyword? | Yes, through Browse All. | Use the browser’s live filters and sorting for sessions. |
| Does selecting an item put you into a match? | No. You must bookmark it or use it when creating a Custom Game. | Yes, selecting Join attempts to enter the live session. |
| Does it require a host? | No, discovery and bookmarking do not. | Yes. The session must already be hosted and in progress. |
| Best use case | Find a particular creation for later or organize your own game. | Play immediately with a session that is already running. |
Use File Share first when you have a specific title or creator in mind. Use Customs Browser first when your priority is playing now and you are willing to choose from the sessions currently available.
A reliable workflow for finding a particular mode
- Write down the exact or partial name you remember, plus any useful tag or theme.
- Search Community > Community File Share > Browse All.
- Open likely results and check whether each is a map, mode or Prefab; do not assume a similarly named Prefab is the playable mode itself.
- Bookmark the correct file and verify it under Community > My Bookmarks.
- If you want to play immediately, separately open Community > Customs Browser and look for a live session using that content.
- If no matching session appears, remove restrictive filters, refresh, check other pages and consider that the host may not have started the game or may already be full.
- If no one is hosting it, create a Custom Game, select the bookmarked content and invite your group.
This sequence prevents the most common mistake: treating a saved community file as though it were a joinable lobby. The file can remain bookmarked for your own future game even when the browser has no active session using it.
What to expect after a browser match ends
When a browser match finishes, players remain together in the same fireteam. The fireteam leader can start another Custom Game with that group, allowing the party to continue without rebuilding it from scratch. The next game can use the same creation or a different bookmarked map and mode.
If you leave the fireteam, lose connection or are removed, that continuity may not apply to you. A player who was booted from a session needs a fresh invitation from someone still inside if they want to return to that specific game.
