Use a two-stage approach: discover candidate accessions in a cross-genebank portal such as Genesys PGR, then verify each accession in the holding genebank’s own record before interpreting any trait or molecular result. A passport record tells you what the material is and where it came from; characterization, evaluation, marker and sequence datasets answer different questions. Keep the holding institute, accession identifier, persistent identifier and sample lineage attached to every downloaded value, and compare only datasets with compatible crops, sampling designs and methods.

Start by defining the diversity question

“Genetic diversity” can mean several different analytical tasks. Decide which one you need before searching, because a portal filter, a field-trial dataset and a DNA-marker study will not provide interchangeable evidence.

Finding breadth within a collection

You may want to know how many accessions represent a crop, which regions are covered, or whether a collection contains wild relatives, landraces, breeding lines and modern cultivars. Passport records and collection summaries are the starting point. They describe identity and provenance, not genetic variation by themselves.

Comparing named groups

A comparison between two countries, production regions or cultivar groups requires a defined membership list and a comparable sampling scheme. “Variety A” and “variety B” are not sufficient labels if one group contains many accessions and the other contains a few, or if one group includes wild relatives and the other does not.

Looking for a trait source

For a trait such as seed color, flowering time or disease response, combine passport identity with characterization or evaluation observations. A trait recorded in one environment is not automatically a universal property of the accession, and an observation does not prove a genetic cause.

Studying molecular relationships

Marker profiles and sequence data can describe similarity, population structure and variation, but the result depends on the sampled individuals, marker or sequence platform, genomic coverage and analysis. A clustering diagram is not a complete ranking of all crop diversity.

Where to find crop germplasm and diversity data

Resource What it covers Best use Important limitation
Genesys PGR Global discovery layer for genebank accessions. Its January 2026 portal snapshot reported 4.5 million accession records from more than 580 genebanks, plus 900+ trait datasets and subsets and 440+ characterization and evaluation datasets. Start a broad search across institutions; filter by crop or taxon, origin, holding institute, collecting details, biological status, date and climate. Counts describe portal holdings, not sequenced accessions. A record does not guarantee that genomic data or distributable seed exists.
USDA-ARS GRIN-Global / National Plant Germplasm System U.S. National Plant Germplasm System records covering acquisition, conservation, characterization, evaluation, documentation and distribution. Search U.S. accessions directly and check whether material may be requested. The live interface and request procedures change. The interface displayed version 2.3.12 and a notice that U.S. shipping procedures changed effective June 1, 2026.
Holding genebank database The institution that physically conserves an accession and may hold detailed inventory, regeneration, phenotype or genotype information. Confirm identity, stock status, restrictions and the most detailed crop-specific data after a portal discovery. Coverage, field names and access rules differ among institutions.
CGIAR genebank and crop-network resources The CGIAR network overview accessed in 2026 described more than 700,000 accessions of over 3,000 plant species across 11 genebanks. Find crop-specific characterization, evaluation or genotyping work and understand network-scale holdings. A network total is not a count of accessions with a particular marker or sequence dataset.

FAO’s Genebank Standards for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (2014) identifies information-management systems such as GRIN-Global and Genesys as part of the documentation needed to conserve and use germplasm. Use the portal for discovery, then treat the holder’s current record as authoritative for stock and request decisions.

Search step by step

  1. Write the inclusion rule. State the accepted taxon, whether wild relatives are included, the geographic or environmental scope, the biological status of interest, and whether you need passport, phenotype, evaluation, marker or sequence evidence.
  2. Search Genesys broadly. Open the accession or passport search, select the crop or taxon and apply provenance and status filters. Check taxonomic synonyms because records may use different accepted names. Export or record the accession results before narrowing the list further.
  3. Record the holding institution. For every candidate, save the genebank or institute code, accession number, taxon, collecting or breeding origin, biological status and any linked dataset identifier. A crop name alone is not a stable key.
  4. Open the holder’s record. Follow the result to the actual genebank system. For U.S. material, search GRIN-Global directly as well as through a portal. Confirm the current taxonomic name, inventory or stock indication, distribution status and request instructions.
  5. Capture persistent identifiers. Save a DOI or other persistent identifier, the source dataset identifier, accession synonyms and the date you accessed the record. Genesys explains the value of a DOI this way: “A DOI is a permanent link that allows anyone to find the exact same record, regardless of the database they use.”
  6. Locate the evidence dataset. Determine whether the linked file contains passport, standardized characterization, environment-dependent evaluation, molecular-marker or sequence data. Download its metadata and data dictionary before interpreting values.
  7. Build an identity crosswalk. Join tables using holding institute, accession identifier and sample or individual identifiers. Keep a separate mapping for synonyms and duplicate identifiers. Never merge records solely because the crop or variety name matches.

Read an accession record without over-interpreting it

Evidence type What it can tell you What it cannot establish by itself Checks to make
Passport data Accession identity, taxonomy, collecting or breeding origin, dates, identifiers and biological status. Genesys exchanges passport information using the Multi-Crop Passport Descriptors (MCPD) standard. A provenance record does not prove a trait, adaptation or genotype. Taxonomic synonym, institute code, accession number, collection site, date, status and persistent identifier.
Characterization data Observable, generally heritable descriptors recorded under standardized conditions, such as seed color, plant height or days to flowering. These help describe and distinguish material. A descriptor measured in one characterization setting is not a complete estimate of field performance or molecular diversity. Descriptor definition, scoring scale, measurement units, environment, year, replication and missing-value code.
Evaluation data Performance under stated environments or stress treatments, such as yield under drought or disease response at a named site. The result is not automatically a universal property of the accession or evidence of a single genetic mechanism. Location, season, management, stress intensity, controls, replication and statistical model.
Genotypic data SSR, SNP, DArT or other marker profiles, or sequence data that can be used to estimate similarity, variation or population structure. A marker panel or sequence study does not represent unmeasured genomic regions or unsampled individuals. Platform, marker set, genomic coverage, filtering, quality thresholds, ploidy assumptions, missing data and analysis method.
Images and linked records Visual evidence that can help check identity or phenotype. An image cannot replace a descriptor definition, assay method or accession identifier. Image date, growth stage, conditions and the exact accession or sample link.

Preserve accession identity across databases

Identity is the most common failure point when records from different institutions are combined. The same named variety can occur in multiple collections, while one accession can have local names, historical numbers and regenerated samples. Conversely, two records that look similar may represent different accessions or generations.

  • Store the holding institute code and accession number as separate fields.
  • Keep the exact taxon name used by the source, plus a normalized name and a synonym table.
  • Save the persistent identifier or DOI and the source dataset version or release date.
  • Record whether a phenotype or genotype was measured on the original accession, a regenerated lot, a bulk sample or named individual plants.
  • Retain links between accession, sample, plant, DNA extraction and sequencing library identifiers.
  • Document any duplicate or synonym decision instead of silently collapsing rows.

CGIAR documentation highlights incompatible data structures and loss of accession identity as barriers to reuse. A clean crosswalk is therefore part of the scientific result, not clerical housekeeping.

Interpret molecular diversity in its sampling context

Ask who was sampled

Note the number of accessions, number of individuals per accession, geographic origins, biological status and the balance among groups. An analysis of one plant per accession estimates relationships among those sampled plants; it does not measure within-accession variation. A study with several plants per accession can address within-accession variation, but only for the sampled accessions and conditions.

Ask what was measured

SSR, SNP, DArT and sequence datasets differ in mutation properties, marker density, ascertainment and genomic coverage. Record the platform, marker list or reference assembly, sequencing depth where stated, quality filters, missing-data treatment and ploidy assumptions. Two studies using the same crop name can still be methodologically incompatible.

Understand common summaries

  • Allelic richness counts distinct alleles, usually with a correction when sample sizes differ. It is sensitive to sampling breadth and rare alleles.
  • Heterozygosity summarizes genotype diversity within a sample. Expected and observed forms answer different questions and depend on marker and population assumptions.
  • Sequence diversity summarizes nucleotide variation over the sequenced regions; values depend on the region, alignment, filtering and sample set.
  • Genetic distance and clustering describe pairwise or group relationships under a chosen distance and algorithm. Different methods can produce different boundaries.

These are different summaries, not interchangeable units. A larger value for one metric is not a universal ranking of crop diversity, and a portal’s larger accession count is not evidence of greater genomic diversity.

Interpret digital sequence information carefully

CGIAR uses digital sequence information to assess collection diversity and identify materials adapted to different conditions. The conclusion remains tied to the sampled accessions, individuals, sequence method and analysis. It should be reported as evidence about that study design, not as a property of every accession in the species.

Compare accessions or datasets on a like-for-like basis

Comparison question What to align Warning sign
Identity and provenance Same taxon, accession or sample lineage; comparable categories such as landrace, cultivar, breeding line or wild relative. Groups defined only by common names or country labels.
Evidence type Passport with passport, standardized characterization with characterization, evaluation under comparable conditions, or molecular data generated with compatible methods. Using an origin field as if it were a genotype or using a single field-trial value as a genetic ranking.
Coverage Number and representativeness of accessions and individuals, geographic range, missing records and missing data. One group has many more samples or a much broader range than the other.
Method Trait descriptor and conditions, or marker/sequence platform, genomic coverage, processing and statistic. Combining values from different platforms or metrics without calibration.
Use and access Whether a candidate can be requested and whether the dataset’s material corresponds to stock held today. Assuming that a published candidate is automatically available for planting.

When methods cannot be aligned, present the results side by side with their qualifications rather than calculating a single rank. Explain which conclusion is supported—for example, “these sampled accessions formed two clusters under this SNP analysis”—and which is not, such as “this region contains the most diverse material worldwide.”

Separate finding a record from obtaining planting material

A database hit is not a shipping confirmation. Stock may be exhausted, under regeneration, restricted to research, or unavailable in a particular season. Distribution can also involve treaty obligations, national access-and-benefit-sharing rules, import permits and phytosanitary certificates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the holder’s live accession record for inventory and distribution status.
  2. Read the institution’s request terms, material-transfer agreement and permitted-use conditions.
  3. Ask the holder whether the lot used in a published study is still available and whether a regenerated lot may differ in generation or sample composition.
  4. Confirm destination-country import rules, quarantine requirements and required phytosanitary documentation before ordering.
  5. Keep the request number, lot or regeneration information and shipping date with your project records.

Current terms must be confirmed with the holding institution. General descriptions of availability constraints do not replace the holder’s current legal, treaty or phytosanitary instructions.

Illustrative workflow for a drought-adaptation project

Suppose you need bean accessions for a drought study. First define whether “bean” means a particular taxon and whether wild relatives or breeding lines are eligible. Search Genesys by taxon, origin and biological status, then retain the institute code and accession number for every candidate. Open each holder’s record and remove accessions with no current request path.

Next, locate evaluation files and read the trial metadata. A drought score from one location and season can identify candidates for follow-up, but it does not establish stable adaptation. If a SNP dataset is linked, verify that its accession list and sample lineage match the evaluation material. Compare groups only after checking sample counts, geographic balance, marker coverage and missing-data filters. Report the final candidates with their passport identifiers, evaluation conditions, molecular method and availability status so another researcher can retrieve the same records.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Mistake Why it fails Fix
Treating the largest portal as the most genetically diverse. Accession totals measure catalog breadth, not diversity measured with a common method. Compare the relevant accessions, sampling and molecular or trait evidence.
Assuming every accession has sequence data. Genesys’ millions of records include passport and other data types; its dataset counts do not mean every accession is genotyped. Open the accession and dataset metadata and verify exact coverage.
Joining files on crop or variety name. Names are ambiguous and synonyms are common. Join on institute, accession and sample identifiers, retaining a documented synonym map.
Calling a field result a genetic effect. Environment, management and season influence evaluation values. Report the test conditions and seek replicated or multi-environment evidence.
Comparing unlike diversity metrics. Allelic richness, heterozygosity, sequence diversity and clustering summarize different properties. Keep metrics separate and explain the sampling and method behind each.
Assuming a published accession can be ordered. Inventory, legal status and phytosanitary rules change. Check the holder’s current record and request process.
Dropping generation or sample information. Regeneration, bulking and individual sampling can change what a dataset represents. Record lot, generation, individual and extraction identifiers whenever available.

Use a reproducible reporting checklist

  • State the crop taxon, synonyms considered and inclusion or exclusion of wild relatives and breeding material.
  • Name the portal and holding institutions searched, with access dates. Genesys counts should be labeled as the January 2026 snapshot; GRIN-Global procedures should be checked against the live interface.
  • List every accession with institute code, accession number, persistent identifier or DOI and source dataset identifier.
  • Describe passport, characterization, evaluation, marker and sequence evidence separately.
  • For traits, report descriptor, units or scoring scale, location, season, management, stress treatment, replication and missing values.
  • For molecular data, report sampled accessions and individuals, platform, marker or sequence coverage, quality filtering, missing-data handling, ploidy assumptions and statistic or clustering method.
  • State whether conclusions concern within-accession variation, relationships among accessions or a broader population claim.
  • Document stock status, request date, legal or treaty terms and phytosanitary requirements if material is needed.
  • Archive the downloaded files, metadata, crosswalk and analysis code or settings with version information.

What a defensible conclusion looks like

A strong conclusion connects the claim to its evidence and scope: identify the exact accessions and provenance, name the data type and method, describe the sampled individuals and environment, then state the limited inference those data support. For example, a study may show that a specified set of accessions differed in flowering time under a named trial and formed clusters under a stated SNP analysis. It does not, without broader sampling and compatible evidence, establish a universal ranking of all varieties or prove that the observed trait difference is caused by one gene.

This discipline makes genebank data useful for breeding, conservation and policy. Discovery portals reveal what may exist; accession records preserve identity; trait and molecular datasets provide evidence whose meaning depends on method and sampling; and the holding institution determines whether material can actually be obtained.
