Open Steam’s official Next Fest event page, filter its game sections to your interests, and hover over a game tile to select Install Demo. For the October 2026 edition, demos should be installed and started by October 26, 2026, the final day of the October 19–26 event window.
Steam Next Fest is a recurring Valve event for upcoming games with playable demos. It runs three times a year—in February, June and October—and the event page can contain more demos than any one player can reasonably try. The workflow below helps you discover suitable titles, check each game’s details, install a manageable queue and avoid losing access when the event closes.

What Steam Next Fest is and when the October 2026 event ends
Steam Next Fest is a weeklong Steam event focused on promoting upcoming games through playable demos. Valve schedules three editions each year: February, June and October. Each edition has its own event window, so a demo shown during one Fest is not automatically part of the next one.
The October 2026 edition runs from October 19 through October 26, 2026. Treat October 26 as your practical cutoff: install and start any priority demos before that date, rather than waiting until the event page is about to close. A download that has not begun by the cutoff may not be available from the event hub afterward, and a developer can later remove its demo.

The date matters because the event page is a temporary discovery surface. The individual game store page is the place to check whether a demo remains available once the Fest has ended.
Open the official Next Fest page first
Begin on Steam’s official Next Fest page while the October edition is active. The event hub is designed for browsing, so you can move between sections without searching for every game by name. Keep the page open while you make a short list of titles to inspect.
- Open the current Next Fest event page. Confirm that the page identifies the October 19–26, 2026 edition. If the page shows a different edition or an event that has already closed, the October cutoff has passed.
- Scan the main categories. Choose genres or categories that match what you actually want to play. Steam places games into sections using the categories selected for each game and its store tags.
- Use more than one section. During the first days of an edition, some event locations are randomized. A game that does not appear near the top of one section may still be surfaced in another category, a named list or a recommendation area.
- Sign in for more useful recommendations. Later in the event, logged-in users receive more recommendations based on their Steam behavior. Those recommendations can narrow a very large catalog, but they should supplement—not replace—category and tag browsing.
Find promising demos without browsing the entire catalog
Start with categories and genres
Use broad categories to establish your first pass: for example, look for the genres you routinely play instead of opening every title in the Fest. Categories are useful for discovery, but they are not a guarantee that a game will match your preferred style. Open the store page for the details that matter to you before committing to a download.

Steam tags provide a more specific signal than a broad genre heading. A game can belong to several sections, and its tags may reveal the perspective, pacing, multiplayer emphasis or other design traits you are looking for. Treat tags as a sorting aid rather than a promise about the final release.
Check named lists and recommendations
Named lists can expose games that a genre-only pass misses. Browse these lists after your initial category scan, then review personalized recommendations if you are logged in. Early-event placement is partly randomized, so a single scroll through one list is not a complete survey of the Fest.

Make a shortlist before downloading
Write down or otherwise mark the titles that deserve a closer look. A shortlist prevents a common failure mode: starting several large downloads and running out of time to play the demos you actually care about. Give each candidate a priority level before you click an install control.
Inspect a game tile and its store page
When you see a game you want to try, hover over its tile on the Next Fest page. The October 2026 preview describes a direct Install Demo control appearing on hover. Select that control for a quick installation path, or open the game’s store page when you need more information before downloading.
What the store page can answer
- What the demo contains: Read the description to understand the portion of the upcoming game being presented.
- Whether the game fits your interests: Compare the description with the categories and tags that brought you to the tile.
- How it looks and plays: Screenshots and other media can help you decide whether a title deserves download time.
- Input and platform details: Check the listed controller or input information and the operating-system support for your setup. These details are game-specific, not universal Next Fest requirements.
- Release information: Review the release information if you are deciding whether to follow the full game after playing its demo.
Do not infer that every demo supports the same operating systems, controllers or play styles. Steam Next Fest supplies the event framework; each developer supplies the game and its store-page information.
Install demos in a priority queue
After you have inspected a few candidates, install a small first batch rather than clicking every available demo. Your objective is to finish meaningful play sessions before October 26, not merely to accumulate downloads.

- Genre and tags: Does the game’s category and tagging align with the experience you want?
- Time available: Can you download and play it before the event cutoff?
- Store-page requirements: Does the page list the operating system, controller or input method you intend to use?
- Follow-up value: If the demo is promising, is the full game worth adding to your wishlist?
Use the answers to create a short, ordered queue. Put the demos you most want to evaluate first, especially if their store pages indicate a large download or if you have limited play time.

Install the first batch
- Return to the game tile on the Next Fest page.
- Hover over the tile and select Install Demo.
- Allow Steam to begin the download, then verify that the demo appears in your Steam library or download queue.
- Repeat for the next highest-priority title only after you have confirmed that the first installation is progressing.
- Launch a demo after installation and note whether it suits your hardware, input preference and available session time before adding more downloads.
This staged approach leaves room to stop downloading games that do not fit your preferences. It also gives you a realistic chance to play the titles you selected before the event closes.
Use wishlists for games you cannot play immediately
Some titles will look worthwhile even when you do not have time to install them during the Fest. Add the full game to your Steam wishlist from its store page. Valve’s event preview describes wishlist use for release notifications, so the wishlist becomes a follow-up mechanism rather than a substitute for the demo.
Wishlist the full game when you want to track its release, even if you decide not to install the demo. Keep your wishlist decisions separate from your demo queue: a game can be worth following without being a priority for this week, and a demo can be useful for evaluation even when you are uncertain about buying the finished game.
A practical schedule for October 19–26, 2026
During the first days
Use the broadest discovery methods early: categories, genres, tags and named lists. Because some locations are randomized at the start, browse several sections rather than assuming the first page represents the entire event. Build a shortlist and inspect store pages before starting downloads.

In the middle of the event
Work through your priority queue in order. Launch installed demos instead of continuing to collect them indefinitely. If a game is not a fit, stop spending download and play time on it and move to the next candidate. Add promising full games to your wishlist so you can receive release notifications.
On October 26
Make a last-call pass through your shortlist. Install and start the demos you still intend to play before the October 26 event cutoff. Give priority to titles you have not yet installed; do not assume that an uninstalled event demo will remain available afterward.

Post-Fest availability is decided by each developer. Valve encourages developers to leave demos available beyond the conclusion of the Fest because players are disappointed when demos disappear immediately, but that encouragement is not a guarantee that every demo will stay live.
After October 26, visit the individual game’s store page rather than relying on the closed event hub. If the demo is still offered there, you can use that page to install it. If the demo is no longer offered, the event cutoff or the developer’s availability decision may be the reason; Steam does not provide one universal retention rule for all Next Fest titles.

The event page has no Install Demo control
Check whether you are still within the October 19–26, 2026 window. The event control is described as appearing when you hover over a game tile, so move the pointer directly over the tile rather than looking only at a static list. If the event has closed, open the game’s individual store page to see whether the developer left the demo available.
The title appears in a list but not in your preferred category
Browse additional categories, tags and named lists. Early-event placement is partly randomized, and a title can be surfaced in a different section from the one you first expected. Personalized recommendations become more behavior-based later for logged-in users, so check those as another discovery route.
You are unsure whether the demo will run on your setup
Open the store page and read the game-specific operating-system, controller and input information before downloading. Next Fest itself does not impose one hardware or control requirement across every demo.
You installed a demo but may not have time to play it
Stop adding downloads and return to your priority order. Play the highest-value title first, then decide whether the next demo deserves the remaining time. For games you cannot reach before the cutoff, wishlist the full release and check the store page after the Fest for continued demo availability.
