You can get more Playdate games in three ways: buy them in Panic’s curated Catalog, upload a developer’s .pdx file through your Playdate account, or transfer a game over USB. Catalog purchases install automatically; wireless sideloading is the simplest option for most independent downloads; USB is useful when you are developing, testing, or deliberately using Data Disk mode.
Use the method that matches where you obtained the game. The instructions below also explain how to recover missing Season One titles, verify a download, and keep a large library organized on current Playdate software.

Choose the right installation path
Playdate games are distributed either through Catalog or as downloadable game files. Catalog is the official store. Independent developers may sell or share compatible games on their own websites and on digital-goods marketplaces such as itch.io, Gumroad, and Shopify. Those external listings are not automatically reviewed or distributed by Panic, so confirm that the product includes a Playdate build before paying or downloading.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Method | Where the game comes from | What you need | How it reaches the handheld | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Catalog | Catalog on the handheld or at play.date/catalog | A Playdate account with a payment card for purchases | Automatic account-linked download, normally within 12 hours or less | The least manual, curated buying experience |
| Wireless sideload | A developer website or a marketplace download | A Playdate registered to your account and a .pdx file or zipped .pdx |
Upload through your account, then refresh Game Library on the device | Independent games and free releases |
| USB with Simulator | Your own project or a compatible .pdx |
A computer, USB connection, Playdate Simulator, and an unlocked handheld | Simulator command uploads the game directly | Developers and testers |
| USB Data Disk | A compatible game archive or folder | A computer and the included USB cable or another compatible cable | Copy an unzipped .pdx into the mounted Games folder |
Manual offline transfer when you understand the file-system risks |
Do not treat these paths as interchangeable. A Catalog purchase is already tied to your account and has an automatic delivery workflow. A sideloaded title requires you to obtain the correct file and refresh the library. Data Disk mode exposes device storage, which Panic warns can damage device software if handled incorrectly.

Buy and install a game from Catalog
Catalog is available in the Playdate’s Catalog app and on the web at play.date/catalog. Panic describes it as a curated store, so it is the most straightforward place to browse games that have been prepared for Playdate distribution.
Before you buy
- Sign in with the Playdate account associated with your handheld.
- Add a payment card to that account. Panic requires a card on file before a Catalog purchase can be completed.
- Make sure the device is registered to the same account and has a working internet connection for delivery.
Purchase on the handheld or web
- Open the Catalog app on Playdate, or visit play.date/catalog in a browser.
- Choose a game and complete checkout with the card attached to your Playdate account.
- Leave the handheld connected to the internet so it can check for the new purchase.
- Open System → Game Library → Downloads to see pending transfers.
- If you want to start every pending transfer immediately, choose Download All. Stay on the downloads screen while the transfer runs.
- When the download finishes, return to Game Library and launch the game.
Panic says Catalog purchases usually install within 12 hours or less. That is an expected time frame, not a guarantee. If the title is not visible after that period, open the Downloads screen and use Download All; confirm that the handheld is online and signed in to the account that made the purchase.
What happens after a Catalog purchase
The purchase is associated with your Playdate account rather than only with the original download session. That account-based workflow is useful if you reset the handheld or sign in on a replacement device: eligible purchases can be downloaded again after you log in. Keep your account credentials available, and do not create a second account simply because a game has not appeared yet.

How to sideload a game wirelessly
Wireless sideloading is the practical choice for a game bought directly from a developer or downloaded from an independent marketplace. Panic’s process uses the Playdate website, so you do not need a cable or a separate desktop utility.
Check the download first
Look for a file ending in .pdx or a ZIP archive that contains a .pdx. A Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS executable that does not include a Playdate build will not install merely because it came from a game seller. Read the developer’s installation notes and confirm the supported Playdate version or controls when those details are provided.
Upload from your Playdate account
- Sign in at play.date with the account registered to your handheld.
- Open your account page and choose Sideload.
- Select the game’s
.pdxfile, or select the ZIP containing the.pdxwhen the developer supplied a zipped build. - Wait for the upload to complete and for the title to appear in your account’s sideloaded games list.
- On Playdate, open Game Library. On earlier system versions, the equivalent location is Settings → Games.
- Refresh the list if the title is not shown immediately, then select the game to download it.
The game is associated with your Playdate account. Panic says you can download it again after a reset or on a new Playdate logged in to that account. This is different from keeping a copy only on one computer: retain the original download and the developer’s receipt or account details in case you need to upload it again.

When a sideload does not appear
- Wrong account: Verify that the browser session and the handheld use the same Playdate account.
- Library has not refreshed: Open Game Library and refresh manually. On older software, check Settings → Games.
- Wrong file type: Re-read the developer’s instructions. The upload must be a Playdate-compatible
.pdxor an archive containing one. - Incomplete upload: Return to the Sideload page and upload the file again on a stable connection.
- Duplicate entry: Check Game Library before uploading another copy. Repeated uploads can make it harder to tell which listing is current, especially when a developer has supplied several builds.
Where to find games outside Catalog
Panic’s developer-distribution guidance allows creators to sell or share Playdate games through their own sites and through marketplaces including itch.io, Gumroad, and Shopify. These sources are how many experimental, free, early-access, and small-studio releases reach players without appearing in Catalog.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteEvaluate a listing before downloading
- Confirm that the product specifically supports Playdate, not only a desktop or mobile platform.
- Look for a direct
.pdxdownload or a ZIP that contains one. - Read the developer’s install instructions, version notes, and refund terms before purchase.
- Prefer the developer’s official page when a marketplace listing links to it for release notes or support.
- Keep the downloaded archive unchanged until you have successfully installed the game; it is your backup if you reset the device.
Panic also accepts submissions from developers who want a finished game considered for Catalog. Catalog’s curated status does not mean every Playdate game must appear there, and an external game is not automatically vetted merely because it runs on Playdate. Treat the seller’s compatibility information as the deciding evidence.
Install over USB with Playdate Simulator
The Simulator workflow is primarily intended for developers, but it can also be useful when you are testing a build supplied as a .pdx. It requires a computer with Playdate Simulator installed and a connected, unlocked handheld.
- Connect the Playdate to the computer by USB.
- Unlock the handheld.
- Open Playdate Simulator.
- Open the game’s
.pdxfile in the Simulator. - Choose Device → Upload Game to Device.
- Wait for the upload to finish, then open the game from Game Library on the handheld.
This route is different from wireless sideloading: the Simulator sends the build over the cable and is designed around development and testing. If the menu command is unavailable, check that the device is unlocked, connected, and recognized by the Simulator before trying another cable or USB port.
Install over USB with Data Disk mode
Data Disk mode mounts Playdate storage on your computer so you can copy files manually. Panic documents it as a deployment method but warns that direct file-system access can break device software. Use it only when you understand the steps, and do not rename, delete, or alter system files.
- Connect the handheld to the computer.
- On Playdate, choose Settings → System → Reboot to Data Disk.
- Wait for the
PLAYDATEvolume to appear on the computer. - Open the volume and locate its
Gamesfolder. - Copy the unzipped game
.pdxintoGames. Do not copy an archive when the folder requires the uncompressed.pdx. - Eject the
PLAYDATEvolume from the computer. - Exit Data Disk mode or reboot the handheld normally, then open Game Library and launch the title.
If the game is missing, check that the .pdx is directly inside Games rather than nested in an extra folder. Confirm that the copy completed before ejecting the volume. If the handheld behaves unexpectedly after file operations, stop altering the storage and follow Panic’s official recovery instructions rather than deleting more files.

Season One is separate from new games
Season One was an introductory delivery program, not a permanent limit on the Playdate library. Panic’s Getting Started guide says the first two Season One games download after setup, followed by two new games each Monday, Pacific Time, for twelve weeks: 24 games total.
If Season One games are missing
Do not sideload replacements first. Panic says missing Season One titles can be downloaded manually through Game Library, or through Settings → Games on older system versions. This recovery path is separate from finding new releases in Catalog or installing independent games.
If you finished Season One
Use Catalog for new curated releases, or obtain a compatible .pdx from a developer and use wireless sideloading. The Season One schedule does not need to continue for you to receive other games; it was a twelve-week delivery of 24 introductory titles.
Organize a large library on Playdate OS 3.0
Playdate OS 3.0 introduced Folders and a new Game Library for downloading, organizing, and managing both Catalog purchases and sideloaded games. Panic says the system supports storing hundreds of games. Its OS 3.0 documentation also states, Over 1,300 at last count.
That figure is the page’s count when published, not a live total for 2026.
A practical organization scheme
- Create folders by genre, such as puzzle, arcade, adventure, and utilities.
- Use a separate folder for unfinished games so the titles you are actively playing remain easy to find.
- Keep prototypes or preview builds apart from finished releases; this reduces confusion when a developer publishes an update.
- Use Game Library’s download controls to install only what you need on a newly reset device instead of downloading everything at once.
Folders organize what is already on the device; they do not change where a game was purchased or which account owns it. A Catalog title remains an account-linked purchase, while a sideloaded game remains associated with the account used to upload it.

“I bought a game, but it has not installed.”

“The Sideload upload succeeded, but I cannot find the game.”
Refresh Game Library. On older system software, use Settings → Games. If it is still absent, confirm the account, then check that the upload was a .pdx or a ZIP containing a .pdx, not a desktop build or an archive with another level of nesting.
“The game launches on my computer but not on Playdate.”
A computer version is not a Playdate version. Obtain the developer’s Playdate-compatible build and follow its installation notes. If you used Data Disk mode, verify that the unzipped .pdx is directly in the device’s Games folder.
“I reset my Playdate and lost my sideloaded titles.”
Sign in to the same Playdate account and use the account’s sideloaded-game list to download the titles again. For games obtained outside the account workflow, locate the original developer download and upload it again.
“I want to use USB, but I am not a developer.”
Use wireless sideloading unless you have a specific reason to use a cable. The account upload avoids direct file-system access. If you choose Data Disk mode, follow the exact reboot, copy, eject, and exit sequence and avoid touching any files outside Games.
Which method should you use?
| Your situation | Recommended route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want a commercially released, curated game | Catalog | Purchase and automatic account-linked delivery |
| You downloaded a free or independently sold game | Wireless sideload | No cable; upload the supplied .pdx through your registered account |
| You are testing your own project | Playdate Simulator USB upload | Fast developer workflow with Device → Upload Game to Device |
| You need a manual offline transfer and understand storage access | Data Disk mode | Copy an unzipped .pdx into Games, with greater risk if system files are changed |
| You are looking for a missing introductory title | Game Library or Settings → Games | Season One recovery is separate from new-game distribution |
For most owners, the decision is simple: use Catalog when the game is sold there, and use wireless sideloading for a developer download. Reserve USB for development or for a deliberate Data Disk transfer. Season One’s 24-game schedule is a starting library, not the boundary of what the handheld can play.
