Open the Xbox Game Pass catalog and choose its Leaving soon collection. Open the individual game listing, confirm that your console or PC is a supported platform, and install it before catalog access ends. If you want to keep playing after removal, installation alone is not enough: you generally need to purchase the game (or otherwise hold a separate license) through the applicable store.
Departure dates, platform support, store offers and app labels can change. Treat the current game listing as the authority for the title you are trying to save, rather than relying on a general promise about how much notice every game receives.

What “leaving Game Pass” means
Game Pass is a subscription catalog, not a permanent ownership library. While a game is included, your account can launch it under the terms of the subscription and the title’s platform availability. When Microsoft removes that title from the catalog, the subscription entitlement to launch it ends. The files may still occupy storage on your Xbox or Windows PC, but those files do not become a retail license merely because they were downloaded.
There are two separate jobs:
- Save the installation: download the game while it is still included, either directly on a compatible device or through the Xbox mobile app’s remote-install capability.
- Save the right to play: buy the game or an eligible edition on the relevant store if you intend to continue after the catalog removal.
A listing can also be available on one Game Pass platform and absent on another. Always read the platform and edition information on the title’s current store page before starting a large download.

Find the current Leaving soon list
Use the Xbox catalog first
- Open the current Xbox Game Pass games catalog.
- Locate the Leaving soon collection. The catalog currently exposes this category, but its position and surrounding navigation can change as the site is redesigned.
- Select a game to open its full listing. Record the displayed departure information, supported platforms, edition, price and any purchase offer before you install or buy.
The web catalog is useful when you are deciding which titles to play, but it is not a guarantee that every listed game can be installed on every device. Compatibility, edition and regional availability are checked at the title and device level.
Check on Xbox, Windows or a phone
Microsoft’s November 17, 2020 Game Pass community guide described three discovery routes: the Game Pass area on an Xbox console, the Xbox app on Windows 10 and the mobile app. Its wording was: “We’ll give you a couple weeks’ notice before a game leaves the library, so check out the mobile app, the Xbox App on Windows 10, or the Xbox Game Pass section on console to find the ‘leaving soon’ collection of games.” That is historical guidance, not a current universal notice commitment, and the applications have changed since 2020.
Use the current Game Pass presentation in whichever app you have installed. Look for a collection or filter labelled Leaving soon, open the game’s details and check the date shown there. If the app and website appear to disagree, use the most recent individual listing and verify again before buying.
Use Xbox Wire announcements as a second check
Xbox Wire announcements sometimes identify games that are leaving in a particular wave. For example, the September 2025 announcement included a list of titles leaving soon: Xbox Wire’s September 2025 Game Pass announcement. These posts provide useful context, but they are dated announcements. The live catalog entry is the better place to confirm the title’s current status, edition and platform.
Confirm that the game can run on your device
Before you press Install, compare the listing with the device on which you expect to play. A Game Pass entry does not imply universal console, PC or mobile availability.

If a game has several editions, compare the exact edition you plan to install with the edition offered for purchase. Add-ons, deluxe content and separate console or PC versions can have different entitlements. Do not assume that buying one edition automatically grants every other edition unless the store explicitly says so.
Install the game before it leaves
Install from the catalog or your platform app
- Open the game’s current Game Pass listing and select the install control for your supported platform.
- Choose the target device or edition only when the interface presents more than one option. Read the requirements and storage information shown by that version of the app.
- Start the download while the game still appears in Game Pass. Keep the device connected to power and a stable network for a large download.
- After the download completes, launch the game once. This confirms that the installation finished and that your account can currently validate the subscription entitlement.
- Return to the game’s store page and note the purchase option if you may want to continue after removal. The purchase path and price can differ by territory, platform and edition.
Launching the game before removal is a useful check, but it does not convert the subscription copy into an owned copy. The separate purchase decision remains necessary if you want access after the catalog entitlement ends.

Xbox Wire’s February 2026 Game Pass announcement describes remote installation through the Xbox mobile app. The app can send an install request to a compatible console or other supported device, allowing the download to begin while you are away from the hardware.
Because Microsoft’s announcement does not document one permanent sequence of button labels for every current phone-app version, do not rely on a memorized path. Instead:
- Sign in to the Xbox mobile app with the account that has the Game Pass subscription.
- Open the current Game Pass catalog or search for the exact title.
- Open the title page and use the app’s install or remote-install control when it is offered.
- Select the compatible destination device shown by the app, then submit the request.
- Check the console or PC for download progress. If no destination is offered, review device compatibility, account sign-in and the device’s remote features rather than assuming that the game is unavailable.
The official capability is documented in Xbox Wire’s February 2026 announcement. App layouts and supported destinations can change, so follow the labels displayed in your installed version.

What remote installation does not do
- It does not bypass platform compatibility or edition restrictions.
- It does not reserve the game in the catalog indefinitely.
- It does not grant a permanent purchase license.
- It does not guarantee that a device will finish downloading before the departure date if the request is delayed, paused or blocked.
Verify the download and fix common installation failures
The game is not visible after a remote request
On Xbox One, Microsoft Support says to check My games & apps > Ready to install when a pushed game does not appear. The exact library layout can differ on newer consoles, but the principle is the same: inspect the device’s owned-and-available or ready-to-install area, then search the title directly in the store if necessary.
If it still does not appear, check these conditions:
- The console or PC is linked to the same Microsoft account used to send the request.
- The target device is online and has enough free storage.
- The title supports that device and the selected edition.
- The subscription is active and the game is still shown as included when you attempt the installation.
- The request did not select a different console, PC or edition.

The download starts but will not finish
- Pause other downloads and confirm that the device has more free space than the installer requires.
- Check the network connection and resume the download from the device’s queue.
- Restart the console or PC if the queue is stuck, then check the queue again before submitting multiple remote requests.
- Re-open the current listing. If the title has already left the catalog, a new subscription installation may no longer be authorized.
Do not delete a partially downloaded game merely to retry it until you have checked its current catalog status. A failed retry after removal can leave you needing to purchase the title before it can be installed again.
The game installs but will not launch
First verify that you are signed in to the account holding the Game Pass access, that the subscription is active and that the title has not reached its removal point. Then check the listing for the supported platform and edition. An installed file can remain on storage even when the account can no longer validate the subscription right to launch it.

Decide whether to buy the game
If you want to play after the game leaves, open its current store listing and compare the offer with your plans. The Game Pass catalog displays “save up to 20% with your member discount” on its page accessed October 13, 2026. That is a displayed maximum, not a guaranteed reduction for every title, region, edition or date. Confirm the actual price and discount at checkout.

Check the individual store page immediately before purchasing. A game can leave the subscription catalog while remaining purchasable, but availability, price and edition rights are controlled by the store for your region and platform. Keep your receipt or order record if you are managing several departing titles.
Understand timing and notice
The 2020 Xbox guide’s “couple weeks’ notice” statement describes the practice Xbox communicated at that time. It should not be treated as a fixed current guarantee for every title. Catalog waves, licensing arrangements and regional schedules can change, and an app may display a date differently from an older announcement.

- Plan to finish or purchase before the earliest date shown, allowing time for a large download, updates and any account or payment problem.
Do not wait for the final hours. A remote request can be delayed by a sleeping or offline device, insufficient storage, a compatibility check or a catalog change. Installing early gives you time to test the launch and resolve those problems while the subscription entitlement is still visible.
Special cases that cause confusion
Installed versus owned
This is the most important distinction: installation places game data on a device; ownership supplies a separate license. After removal, the title may remain listed in your library or remain installed, yet launch access can still be blocked until you buy an eligible edition or regain access through another valid entitlement.
Different editions and add-ons
A Game Pass listing may identify a standard, deluxe or platform-specific edition. Downloading one edition does not prove that another edition’s bonuses or add-ons are licensed. Open the store page for the exact edition, and check whether previously purchased add-ons require the base game to be owned on that platform.
Multiple consoles or a console and PC
Remote installation can show more than one destination, but the destination list is not a promise that the game runs everywhere. Verify each device separately. A console installation and a Windows installation can be different builds with different requirements and store rights.

Regional differences
Catalog contents, departure timing, prices and discounts can vary by market. The catalog page’s displayed maximum discount was recorded in the United States English version on October 13, 2026; it should not be generalized to another territory. Use the store account and region in which you will actually play.
