The dependable method is to identify the account through the person’s official website or institution, confirm the profile details, and follow the account directly. On X, public posts can be viewed even without an account, and X says non-subscribers continue to see a creator’s regular posts when they follow that creator. Subscription-only posts, protected posts, recommendation limits, and moderation notices are separate access or visibility conditions—not automatic signs that you must pay.
This guide explains how to find the right account, what free following does and does not provide, how X differs from Instagram and Threads, and what to check when a post does not appear.

What free access actually includes
Public posts are different from subscriber-only posts
A public post is intended to be viewable by anyone under the platform’s normal visibility rules. A subscription is an additional product that can provide bonus material, exclusive posts, or subscriber-only replies. Paying for a subscription does not convert every post into a different kind of public record; it unlocks material that the creator has designated for subscribers.
X describes public posts as visible to anyone, whether or not the viewer has an X account. Its subscription guidance says that if you do not purchase a creator’s subscription, you can still see that creator’s regular posts by following them normally. The same guidance distinguishes regular posts from subscriber-only posts and replies, which remain restricted to subscribers.

Free following is not a promise that every post will be shown
Following creates a direct relationship between your account and the figure’s account, but a home timeline is still a filtered stream. X says accounts and Topics you follow help determine what appears in Home, while recommendations use multiple signals. A followed account’s post can therefore be eligible for your feed without appearing in strict chronological order or at the moment it is published.
Other limits can also affect visibility. An account may be protected, a post may be subscriber-only, or a public-interest notice may reduce how widely a post is distributed. None of those conditions should be interpreted as proof that a paid subscription is required to see all of the figure’s public material.
Find the authentic account before you follow
1. Start with an official web presence
Open the figure’s official government, legislative, campaign, or personal website first. Look for its social-media links and use those links to reach the account. An official site or public institution gives you a stronger starting point than a search result, display name, or profile photo alone.

This step matters because political figures often have common names, local and national offices, campaign and personal accounts, and impersonation profiles. A link published by the person’s office or institution connects the social handle to a source that is easier to evaluate independently.
2. Search with the full name and office
If the official site does not list a social link, search the platform using the person’s full name together with the office, district, party role, or institution. Search results can contain fan accounts, old campaign accounts, parody profiles, and similarly named people. Treat the search as a way to create a shortlist, not as authentication.
3. Compare the profile details
Before following, compare the candidate profile with information from the official source:

- Check that the account name and handle match the person or office you intend to follow.
- Read the biography for the stated office, jurisdiction, or institutional role.
- Look for a website link, office link, or other cross-link that leads back to a trusted official source.
- Check whether the profile describes itself as current, campaign-related, personal, or an archived account.
- Examine recent posts for consistent references to the same office and public role, while remembering that appearance and writing style are not proof of identity.
4. Treat badges as clues, not proof
X’s current labels guidance says a blue checkmark may indicate an active paid subscription. It does not, by itself, establish the former standard of being active, notable, and authentic. A grey checkmark indicates a government, multilateral organization, or official account, but a badge still works best as one signal among several.

Confirm the identity through a cross-link from the figure’s official website or a public institution whenever possible. If no trusted source connects the handle to the person, pause before following, sharing, or relying on the account for an announcement.
Account-verification checklist
- Official website or institution found.
- Social link or handle matches the profile you are considering.
- Office, jurisdiction, and biography are consistent.
- Profile links back to a trusted source when available.
- Any badge is treated as supporting evidence rather than a stand-alone authenticity test.
Follow the account and make its posts easier to notice
Follow directly instead of waiting for recommendations
Select the platform’s Follow control on the account you have verified. Directly following is more dependable than hoping a recommendation system will discover the account for you. X says followed accounts and Topics influence the Home timeline, although recommendations also use other signals.
On Instagram and Threads, the policy announcement discussed below says the recommendation change did not alter how content from accounts a person chooses to follow is shown. Following is therefore the key action on those services as well, even though the exact feed behavior and controls can change.
Use notifications only as an optional supplement
If the platform offers post or account notifications, you can enable them for especially important accounts. Notification names, menus, and availability vary by platform and app version, so use the controls currently displayed in your app rather than relying on an old button-by-button guide. Notifications are alerts, not a guarantee that every post will arrive instantly or that every reply and repost will be included.

Use Topics or Lists when the service provides them
X says Topics and Lists can shape what people see in addition to followed accounts. A list containing the verified accounts of a legislature, city council, campaign, or public agency can make monitoring more deliberate than relying on the general Home timeline. Keep the list focused so important posts are not buried under unrelated accounts.

Understand the difference between viewing and following
X states that a public post can be viewed without an account. Viewing a public post is different from following: following requires an account and gives the platform a direct signal that you want the account’s posts in your feed. If you want ongoing updates rather than a one-time look, create an account and follow the verified profile.
How X handles public posts, subscriptions, and visibility limits
Public and protected accounts
X’s default public-post setting makes posts visible to anyone, whether or not they have an X account. A protected account is different: its posts are visible only to approved followers. If a political figure’s account is protected, you must request to follow and wait for approval; public viewing rules do not apply to those posts.
Regular posts versus subscription-only material
X’s help guidance makes the practical distinction clear:
“If someone has a Subscription offering and you don’t purchase the Subscription, you’ll continue to see their regular posts by following them as you normally would.”
That means a subscription prompt does not automatically block the account’s ordinary public updates. Subscriber-only posts and replies remain restricted, and some public posts may limit replies to subscribers without making the entire account private.
When you encounter a locked post, identify which category it belongs to. A subscriber-only post is intentionally limited by the creator. A regular public post that is hard to find may instead be affected by timeline ranking, a public-interest notice, or another visibility setting.

Blue and grey checkmarks
A blue checkmark can be associated with a paid plan and is not a reliable stand-alone authenticity test. X describes a grey checkmark as identifying a government, multilateral organization, or official account. Cross-checking the handle through an official website or institution remains the safer way to establish identity.
Public-interest notices
X says a public-interest notice can keep a post available to view and discuss while reducing its ability to be liked, reposted, or shared and preventing algorithmic recommendation. The platform presents this as a balance between public-interest value and potential harm.
As a result, a post can be publicly readable but absent from recommendations, harder to circulate, or missing the usual engagement controls. If you can open the post directly but do not see it in Home, that difference may reflect the notice rather than a subscription barrier.

Non-followed political accounts were treated differently in recommendations
In an announcement published February 9, 2024 and updated April 1, 2024, Meta said Instagram and Threads would not proactively recommend political content from accounts a person does not follow in recommendation surfaces. The announcement also said the change did not alter how content from accounts people choose to follow is shown.
This distinction is important for discovering political figures. If you do not already follow an account, a recommendation surface may be less likely to introduce its political posts. Finding the account through an official website or a deliberate search, then following it, avoids depending on that recommendation path.
Do not treat the 2024 announcement as a timeless setting guide
The announcement describes the policy and controls at that time. Instagram and Threads can change labels, menus, recommendation surfaces, and user controls, and the announcement itself is not a current 2026 guarantee. Check the settings and notices shown in your present app before giving or following any detailed control instructions.
The cited announcement does not establish that every Instagram or Threads post can be viewed without an account, nor does it define a universal subscription system equivalent to X’s creator subscriptions. Use the platform’s current account and post visibility indicators when evaluating a specific profile.
Why a post may not appear, and what to check
The account is protected
On X, protected posts are limited to approved followers. Confirm that you followed the correct account and that the account owner approved the request. Until approval, you should not expect protected posts to be publicly visible.
The post is subscriber-only
A creator subscription can include exclusive posts and replies. If the post is explicitly marked for subscribers, following the account for free will not unlock it. Look for the account’s regular public posts instead; X says those remain available to non-subscribers who follow.

A post carrying a public-interest notice may remain viewable while losing recommendation and engagement capabilities. Open the post directly from the profile or a saved link if it is not appearing in Home. The absence of a recommendation does not by itself indicate that the post is paid.
The timeline is ranked rather than complete and chronological
Following influences what appears in Home, but X also uses multiple recommendation signals. A post can be eligible for your feed without appearing at the top or immediately after publication. Check the account’s profile directly when timing matters, and use a focused list or available notification control as a supplement.
The account identity is uncertain
If a search result looks plausible but cannot be connected to an official website or institution, do not assume it is authentic. Recheck the handle, biography, office, and cross-links before treating a post as an official statement.
A reliable, no-cost routine for following political figures
- Make a source list. Record the official government, legislative, campaign, or personal websites for the figures and offices you need to monitor.
- Open each site’s social links. Use the links supplied by the office or institution to identify the corresponding account handles.
- Verify the profile. Compare the handle, biography, office, jurisdiction, and cross-links. Treat badges as additional context, not conclusive proof.
- Follow the account. This gives the platform a direct signal that you want posts from that account rather than relying on recommendations.
- Add optional alerts or organization tools. Where the platform offers them, use notifications, Topics, or Lists to reduce the chance that important updates are buried.
- Check the profile when an update is time-sensitive. A home timeline is not a guaranteed chronological transcript, so open the account directly for the latest public post.
- Classify anything missing. Determine whether it is protected, subscriber-only, subject to a public-interest notice, or simply absent from recommendations before concluding that payment is required.
- Recheck identity periodically. Offices change, campaigns end, and people maintain separate official and personal accounts. Confirm that the account still represents the role you intend to follow.

The evidence is strongest for X’s public-post and subscription rules. The Instagram and Threads policy point is date-specific, so use the current in-app controls and visibility labels when applying it.
Questions to keep in mind before you pay
- Is the account’s ordinary feed public? On X, regular public posts remain viewable to non-subscribers who follow; a subscription is for additional restricted material.
- Is the account protected? Protected X posts require approval, regardless of whether you pay for a subscription.
- Is a recommendation missing because of distribution rules? A public-interest notice can suppress recommendations while retaining public access, and timeline ranking can delay or hide a post from Home.
- Have you verified the handle? A blue checkmark alone does not establish authenticity; use official-site or institutional cross-links.
- Are you relying on a dated policy? Meta’s Instagram and Threads announcement is from 2024. Confirm present settings before assuming that recommendation behavior is unchanged.
Bottom line for following public political posts
Find the account through an official website or institution, verify its handle and role, and follow it directly. On X, that is enough to keep receiving the figure’s regular posts without buying early access; subscriber-only material remains separate. Use notifications, Topics, or Lists only as optional aids, and investigate protected status, subscription labels, public-interest notices, and timeline ranking before assuming a missing post is paywalled.
