How to Find and Fix JavaScript Memory Leaks

Use repeatable workloads and heap-snapshot comparisons to find what keeps JavaScript objects alive, fix the retaining path, and confirm the objects stop accumulating.

To find a JavaScript memory leak, reproduce the workload, compare heap snapshots taken before and after repeated cycles, then follow the growing objects’ retainer paths to the references keeping them alive. Fix that ownership or cleanup problem and repeat the same profile to verify the objects stop accumulating. A rising memory graph is a reason to investigate, not proof of a leak: high memory use and frequent garbage collection can have different causes.

What counts as a JavaScript memory leak?

JavaScript garbage collection is based on reachability. An object can be collected when it is no longer reachable from roots such as global objects; it cannot be collected while a reachable reference still points to it, even if the application no longer needs it. Common owners include global variables, unbounded caches, event listeners, callbacks, and closures.

Cycles alone are not evidence of a leak. Modern JavaScript engines use mark-and-sweep collection, which can reclaim unreachable cycles. The useful question is not whether objects refer to one another, but whether an unnecessary reference keeps them reachable. MDN’s memory-management overview explains reachability and garbage collection.

Distinguish a leak from other memory symptoms

Record what the user or service experiences, then measure the same workload repeatedly. A page may retain more objects across comparable cycles, use more memory than it needs without steadily growing, or pause because garbage collection is frequent. These are different symptoms and call for different evidence. Chrome notes that progressively worsening performance can be a leak symptom, but there is no universal acceptable-memory threshold: device and browser capabilities differ. See Chrome’s memory-problem guidance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Retained-object growth: the same action repeated leaves additional objects alive. Compare snapshots and inspect retainers.
  • High memory footprint: process or page memory is high, but that alone does not establish that objects are accumulating. Chrome’s Task Manager can help distinguish OS memory footprint from JavaScript heap memory.
  • Frequent collection: allocation and reclamation may be causing pauses even if objects are not continuously retained. Use allocation profiling and observe the workload rather than labeling every spike a leak.

A heap snapshot shows reachable JavaScript objects at a point in time; it does not represent every part of process memory or every property implemented by native code. Shallow size is the memory held by an object itself. Retained size estimates what could become free if removing that object made its dependents unreachable, so the retainer chain—not just the largest-looking object—is important.

Make the suspected leak reproducible

  1. Write down the exact action or workload: for example, open and close a view, navigate between pages, process a batch, or handle the same class of request.
  2. Record the runtime and relevant conditions, including whether memory remains high after the operation ends.
  3. Repeat the action and its reverse in a stable environment. Chrome recommends comparing an operation with its reverse, such as opening and closing a document.
  4. Compare object retention across equivalent cycles. A single high reading, or ordinary allocation activity, is not enough to establish a leak.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Heap snapshot: shows reachable JavaScript objects and related DOM nodes at a point in time. Summary groups by constructor or source; Comparison highlights differences between snapshots; Containment helps inspect object structure and closures.
  • Allocation instrumentation on timeline: records allocations over time and can isolate objects allocated during an interval that remain alive at its end.
  • Allocation sampling: attributes approximate allocation volume to JavaScript execution stacks with lower profiling overhead.
  • Detached elements: focuses on detached DOM elements still retained by JavaScript references.

Compare equivalent lifecycle cycles

  1. Wait until the page reaches a stable state and capture a baseline heap snapshot.
  2. Perform the suspected operation and its reverse—for example, open and close the relevant view—and repeat that cycle several times.
  3. Capture another snapshot and switch to Comparison.
  4. Inspect constructor groups or object types whose retained count or size increases across cycles.
  5. Select a suspicious object and follow its retainer chain to the reference and owner keeping it reachable. Check detached DOM nodes when the feature creates or removes elements.

A detached node is a clue, not automatically the cause. Follow the reference to the component or lifecycle that owns it. Chrome’s heap snapshots show objects reachable from the global object; a retainer path helps explain why an object remains reachable. See Chrome’s heap snapshot documentation.

Find leaks in a Node.js process

Node.js supports heap snapshots through the Inspector, runtime flags, and V8 APIs. The Node.js guide documents these routes and their minimum versions: --heapsnapshot-signal works in Node.js v12.0.0 or later, and v8.writeHeapSnapshot() is available in v11.13.0 or later. Confirm support and exact invocation for the Node.js version you deploy; the guide also covers --inspect and the Inspector protocol. See Node.js: Using Heap Snapshot.

Compare snapshots after warm-up

  1. Start the service and let bootstrap work finish so expected startup allocations do not dominate the comparison.
  2. Run the suspect function or workload repeatedly, then capture a snapshot.
  3. Continue the same workload, avoiding unrelated activity where possible, then capture another snapshot.
  4. Load the older snapshot first in Chrome DevTools, load the newer snapshot, choose Comparison, and inspect positive object deltas and their retaining references.

Protect availability: snapshot creation stops work on the main thread, may take more than a minute, and builds the snapshot in memory. Node.js warns that this can double heap use and crash the application. Capture snapshots only on an instance where a crash will not compromise service availability. If you expose a snapshot trigger, restrict access so an unauthorized caller cannot invoke it.

Fix the reference that owns the leak

Use the retainer path to identify the source-level owner, then change the lifetime or ownership that makes the object stay reachable. Verify each suspected cause in the profile rather than assuming that a particular coding pattern is always a leak.

  • DOM nodes and listeners: release references to removed nodes when a view or component is torn down, and unbind listeners that are no longer needed.
  • Timers, subscriptions, and callbacks: clear or unregister long-lived work when its feature lifecycle ends, if the retaining path shows it is keeping unused data alive.
  • Caches and collections: bound a cache or delete entries when their data is no longer useful. A globally reachable, unbounded collection can retain objects indefinitely.
  • Closures: reduce what a long-lived callback captures if its retained context contains data it no longer needs. A closure can retain local variables accessible to nested functions.
  • Object-keyed metadata: consider a WeakMap when metadata should not keep its object key alive solely because of the association. Weak collections are non-iterable and have key constraints; they do not replace explicit cleanup when entries must be enumerable or a resource must be released deterministically.

Verify the repair and avoid false fixes

Repeat the original user interaction or workload under comparable conditions. Capture and compare profiles again, confirm that the suspected object group no longer accumulates, and check that the feature still behaves correctly. A temporary memory drop is not enough to prove the underlying reference was released.

Raising a heap limit can postpone an out-of-memory failure, but it does not show that retained objects have been released. Likewise, a snapshot’s JavaScript heap is not the whole process footprint. Use process-level memory measurements to understand total resource use, and heap snapshots to investigate JavaScript object reachability.

Troubleshooting common profiling problems

  • Memory rises, but the comparison shows no growing retained objects: distinguish heap from OS/process footprint and consider memory bloat or frequent collection instead of assuming a leak. Repeat a controlled workload.
  • A detached DOM node appears: follow its retainer chain to the JavaScript reference and owning lifecycle; detachment by itself does not identify the root cause.
  • The largest shallow-size object looks harmless: inspect retained size and retainers. A smaller owner can keep a much larger object graph alive.
  • Snapshots differ substantially between runs: warm up the page or service, repeat equivalent actions, and reduce unrelated activity between captures.
  • Node.js slows or crashes during capture: snapshot generation pauses the main thread and consumes substantial additional memory. Reproduce on a crash-tolerant instance rather than casually triggering it on a production process.
  • The graph remains high after a workload ends: check whether the same objects are still reachable in a snapshot; a high reading alone does not identify which owner is retaining them.

For capturing a page as a clean screenshot, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a JavaScript memory profiler. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Example using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
