Find candidates in Google Search Console’s Links report and, when you need referring-page, anchor-text, and broken-target detail, a backlink analysis platform’s broken-backlinks report. Then open every candidate URL yourself, verify its current response and redirect chain, and choose one repair: restore the original page, permanently redirect it to a closely relevant replacement, or leave a genuine 404 or 410 when no equivalent exists.
This process matters for people first. A visitor who follows a recommendation from another site should reach the information that recommendation promised. It can also recover useful paths that search engines and referring sites have already discovered, but no report can promise a ranking increase or a fixed amount of recovered link equity.

What a broken backlink is—and what it is not
A backlink is a link on an external website that points into your website. It becomes a broken backlink when the target URL no longer delivers the intended page, commonly because the page was deleted, its address changed, or a redirect is failing. A broken backlink is therefore an inbound-link problem: the defect is at the destination on your site or in the route to it.
Broken backlink versus broken outbound link
A broken outbound link is a link on one of your own pages that points to a missing page elsewhere. You may need to audit both, but they are different jobs. This guide concerns external pages linking to your site and the destination those visitors reach.

Why reports disagree
Google Search Console says its Links report contains links Google has found over time, not a real-time or guaranteed-complete inventory. Specialist backlink databases have their own crawl schedules and coverage. A provider can label a link broken because its last crawl saw a 404, a redirect-chain problem, or an inaccessible response even though the URL now works. Google explains the difference between crawl findings and the current state of a URL in its technical guidance: Google Search technical requirements.
For that reason, treat every report row as a candidate. The URL’s current response, rendered content, and redirect path are the evidence on which you should act.
Where to find candidate broken backlinks
Google Search Console: the free starting point
- Open the verified property for your site in Google Search Console.
- Select Links in the navigation.
- Review the external-link sections for pages on your site that receive links and the sites or text associated with those links.
- Export or record destination URLs that look obsolete, misspelled, or likely to have been deleted.
- Inspect each recorded URL separately before changing anything.
The official Links report documentation describes links Google has found over time and the pages receiving them. It is useful for confirming that Google has discovered a linking relationship, but it is not a complete census of every backlink and it does not replace a current HTTP check.

A specialist broken-backlinks report
For a large site or a campaign involving many referring pages, a dedicated backlink platform can reduce manual work. Ahrefs documents a Broken backlinks report that lists referring pages linking to a site’s 404 destinations and can show the anchor text and surrounding text. Its Best by links workflow also lets you filter destinations by an HTTP 404 and inspect the external pages that point to them: Ahrefs’ opportunity guide.
This is a paid route, whereas Search Console is free. The platform’s crawl date, index and filters determine what appears, so use it to prioritize and investigate rather than to assume that every backlink has been found.

How the discovery choices differ
| Method | What it shows | Broken-target detail | Referring-page context | Access and freshness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console Links report | Links Google has found over time, including pages on your site that receive external links | Requires opening and testing the destination URL separately | Provides Google’s link and page groupings; the report is not a specialist broken-link view | Free; coverage reflects Google’s findings over time |
| Specialist backlink platform | Indexed backlink records and filters for broken destinations | Ahrefs documents a report for referring pages that link to 404 destinations |
Can expose the referring URL, anchor text, and surrounding text | Paid; freshness depends on the provider’s crawl and database |
Neither method guarantees exhaustive coverage, and neither by itself proves that fixing a link will improve rankings. Use both when the site is important enough to justify a second dataset, then verify the live URL.
Verify every candidate before editing redirects
Do not create a redirect from a report label alone. A URL marked broken may have been repaired, may return an error-like page with a success status, or may fail only at one step in a redirect chain.
1. Open the exact destination
Copy the destination exactly as reported, including capitalization, trailing slash, parameters, and any old directory structure. Open it in a private browser window and note what a normal visitor sees. Test the canonical-looking version as well if the site routinely redirects between HTTP and HTTPS or between hostnames, but keep the original URL in your notes.
2. Check the actual HTTP response
Google’s crawling-error guidance distinguishes a genuine not-found response from a soft 404. A soft 404 displays an error-like message but returns an HTTP 200 success status. That can make a tool report look contradictory: the page appears missing to a person while the server says it succeeded. A genuinely unavailable page should return an appropriate not-found status, normally 404 or, when the resource has been intentionally and permanently removed, 410.
3. Follow every redirect
Record each hop from the reported URL to the final page. Confirm that the chain ends at the page a visitor needs, not at another obsolete URL, an error page, or a generic destination. Google’s redirect documentation explains how permanent redirects are interpreted: Redirects and Google Search. A report can call a link a “broken redirect” even when it now works if the provider saw an earlier chain, a temporary failure, or a crawl-access problem; see the documented broken-redirect explanation.

4. Compare the rendered content with the referring context
Read the page that contains the backlink. Identify what the anchor promises: a tutorial, product page, study, download, or another specific resource. Then compare that promise with the destination’s current content. A page that returns 200 but no longer answers the referring page’s question may be functionally broken even if it is not technically a 404.

5. Recheck suspicious labels later
If the URL works and the chain is clean, do not change it just to clear a report. Providers update records when they recrawl a referring page or redirect path. A later crawl may remove the warning; reports about lost links and their causes can change as the provider revisits the source: Understanding link-lost reasons.
Prioritize the URLs that deserve repair first
You rarely need to repair hundreds of URLs in arbitrary order. Start with destinations where the referring page is useful to readers and the original subject still belongs on your site.
- Relevance: A referring page that discusses the same question, topic, or resource is more actionable than an unrelated mention.
- Reader demand: Give precedence to links in guides, documentation, news coverage, or community resources that people are likely to follow.
- Link volume: A destination referenced by many external pages may justify earlier work, but counts are triage clues, not proof of ranking value.
- Destination importance: Prioritize pages that represent a core product, evergreen guide, research page, or major navigational path.
- Repair confidence: A clear replacement or recoverable original page is safer to fix than a URL whose subject has disappeared entirely.
Use the anchor and surrounding text to understand the intended destination, not to manufacture a replacement that merely contains a similar keyword. Third-party authority or link scores can help sort a queue, but they do not establish that a particular link will pass a measurable amount of value.
A practical triage queue
- Mark each candidate as verified broken, working, soft 404, redirect-chain issue, or unclear.
- Within the verified-broken group, sort by relevance of the referring page and usefulness to visitors.
- Separate URLs with an obvious successor from URLs whose content may need restoration or a deliberate retirement.
- Handle high-impact, low-risk repairs first, then investigate ambiguous cases with the referring site’s context.
Choose the repair that matches the content
The correct response depends on what the old URL represented, not on the desire to eliminate every error report.

| What you find | Recommended response | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The original page still belongs on the site and its former URL is appropriate | Restore the content at the original URL | Visitors and referring pages keep the destination they intended |
| The page moved, or a closely relevant replacement clearly supersedes it | Use a permanent redirect from the old URL to that replacement | The old address has a direct, understandable successor |
| The content is gone and no comparable destination exists | Return a genuine 404 or 410 |
A truthful not-found response is better than sending visitors somewhere unrelated |
| The URL reaches the right content through several unnecessary hops | Shorten the path so the old URL reaches the final relevant page directly | Fewer hops are clearer for users and easier to crawl |
Restore the original URL when the subject still belongs there
Use restoration when a page was deleted accidentally, a migration omitted it, or the same guide, reference, or resource is still part of the site. Rebuilding the page at its established address preserves the expectation set by the external link. After publishing, open the old URL and verify that the page renders normally and returns a successful response.
Redirect only to a genuinely relevant replacement
If the content moved to a new address, configure a permanent redirect from the old URL to the closest equivalent. The replacement should answer the same underlying request, not merely share a word in the title. For example, an old article about configuring a particular protocol may redirect to its updated version, while a discontinued announcement with no successor should not be redirected to a general news index.
Test the old address, the final address, and the complete path after implementation. Avoid redirecting the old URL to another redirect when a direct mapping is possible.
Leave a real 404 or 410 when there is no equivalent
A truthful not-found response is the appropriate outcome when the site has permanently removed a page and no current resource can satisfy the referring link. Do not create a thin substitute solely to avoid a 404. If the referring site remains valuable, you can ask its owner to update or remove the link, but that outreach is separate from inventing an unrelated destination.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the homepage is usually the wrong target
Sending every dead URL to the homepage makes an error disappear in a report while giving visitors no explanation and no equivalent information. It can also create a soft-404-like experience when the homepage does not match the old page’s purpose. Google’s troubleshooting guidance and Ahrefs’ broken-backlink workflow both support choosing a relevant replacement rather than a blanket homepage redirect: broken-backlink guidance.
Best Value
Implement and validate each fix
Keep a simple change log with the old URL, referring page, observed status, chosen action, date, and final destination. That record prevents repeated investigation when multiple tools report the same URL.
- Apply one repair: restore the page, add the permanent redirect, or deliberately return
404/410. - Open the old URL: confirm that it now produces the intended status or reaches the relevant replacement.
- Inspect the final page: verify that its content fulfills the anchor and surrounding text on the referring page.
- Check the chain: remove avoidable intermediate redirects and ensure no hop ends in an error, loop, or unrelated page.
- Revisit the report: allow the referring page and destination to be crawled again, then check whether the provider’s classification changes.
- Record the outcome: note unresolved cases rather than repeatedly changing URLs based on fluctuating labels.
Google’s URL-testing and crawling-error material emphasizes checking what the URL actually returns, while provider reports can change after recrawling. A changed report is evidence that the database was updated, not a guarantee that rankings or traffic will increase.
Troubleshoot common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The tool says 404, but the page opens | The provider has an older crawl, saw a temporary failure, or followed a different URL variant | Test the exact reported URL and its redirect chain; keep the page unchanged if the current path is correct |
| The page shows “not found” but returns 200 | Soft 404 | Correct the server response so a missing resource returns an appropriate not-found status, or restore/redirect the page if it should exist |
| The old URL redirects through several addresses | Legacy migrations or stacked redirect rules | Map the old URL directly to the final relevant destination and retest every hop |
| Many dead URLs now land on the homepage | A blanket redirect rule was used | Replace it with page-specific relevant redirects; return 404/410 where no equivalent exists |
| A backlink is marked as lost after a change | The referring page, destination, or redirect path changed, or the provider has not recrawled consistently | Check the source page and current destination before restoring or changing anything; use the provider’s explanation of link-loss reasons |
| A high link count points to an irrelevant page | Quantity was mistaken for usefulness | Prioritize relevance and visitor intent over a third-party score or raw count |
Maintain a healthy backlink destination map
Broken-backlink work is easier when URL changes are deliberate. Before deleting or renaming a page, identify important external references and decide whether the page will be restored, redirected to a true successor, or retired with a clear not-found response. Keep redirects pointing to the final destination rather than adding another layer during each redesign.
Review the Links report and any specialist report on a recurring schedule appropriate to your publishing rate. Because both datasets reflect crawls over time, compare the report date and crawl context with the live URL before opening a development ticket. When a provider offers a reason for a lost or broken link, treat that reason as a lead to verify, not as a substitute for checking the page yourself.
Quick Recap
A concise decision checklist
- Is the link external and does it point into your site?
- Does the exact destination currently return the expected status and content?
- If it fails, is the original content still appropriate at that URL?
- If not, is there one closely relevant replacement?
- Would a 404 or 410 be more honest than any available redirect?
- Does the chosen fix avoid a homepage redirect, loop, or unnecessary chain?
- Have you tested the old URL, final URL, rendered content, and report after recrawl?
