To find a rideshare launch for a CubeSat or other small satellite, start with NASA’s launch-opportunity information and, when eligible, the CubeSat Launch Initiative (CSLI). Then contact commercial launch providers, qualified brokers, or integrators with the same mission data sheet. Choose only after scoring orbit and deployment accuracy, schedule, payload interfaces, licensing, safety work, integration scope, mission assurance, and the complete cost—including any orbital-transfer stage.
What a small-satellite rideshare is
A rideshare places your spacecraft on a rocket that is primarily flying another mission. The primary customer determines most of the launch vehicle’s orbit, launch window, safety rules, and operating schedule. Your satellite uses capacity that would otherwise remain unused, so transportation is usually cheaper than buying an entire small-launch vehicle.

The trade-off is control. A rideshare may not provide your preferred inclination, altitude, local time of the ascending node, deployment date, deployment order, or separation dispersion. An orbital-transfer vehicle can move a payload from the primary deployment orbit to a different destination, but that service adds cost, interfaces, testing, and another operational dependency.

A dedicated small launcher is the alternative when orbit, timing, or special handling matters more than the lowest launch price. NASA describes dedicated vehicles as offering tailored access and special accommodations, but generally at a substantially higher price and lower flight frequency than rideshare.

Where to look for launch opportunities
Use NASA’s launch information for discovery, not reservation
NASA’s launch portal is useful for awareness and early concept development. Its published opportunities may have the potential to support secondary or rideshare payloads, but NASA explicitly warns that rideshare authorization is not guaranteed. The portal should therefore generate leads rather than serve as a booking confirmation. NASA encourages proposers to contact commercial launch providers directly.
Check CSLI if your organization qualifies
NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative facilitates low-Earth-orbit flight opportunities for eligible U.S. educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and NASA centers. Selection depends on finding a compatible launch opportunity. NASA can provide integration and other launch support as needed, but CSLI does not pay for satellite development.
As of September 2026, NASA reported 228 selected CSLI CubeSat missions, of which 183 had launched. Solicitations, eligibility rules, and submission dates can change, so verify the current CSLI announcement before committing a project schedule.

Commercial schedules, available mass, interfaces, and prices change. Send an identical payload data sheet to launch providers, brokers, and integrators so that responses can be compared on equal terms. Ask each respondent for the current orbit, target date, remaining capacity, interface requirements, integration milestones, and an all-in written quotation.
A repeatable search-and-selection workflow
- Define the mission envelope. Record the required orbit and inclination, acceptable altitude range, deployment dispersion, latest acceptable date, spacecraft mass, dimensions, center of gravity, power and communications constraints, and any operational restrictions.
- Survey government and commercial listings. Check NASA’s launch portal and CSLI information where applicable, then review current provider opportunity lists. Treat every listing as preliminary until the provider confirms a slot and compatibility.
- Issue one standardized payload package. Give every provider or intermediary the same mass properties, drawings, electrical details, battery information, radio-frequency characteristics, hazardous-material declaration, and preliminary operations concept.
- Request the controlling documents. Obtain the provider’s Interface Control Document (ICD), integration schedule, environmental requirements, safety and licensing checklist, insurance and liability terms, and a written all-in quote.
- Hold a technical interchange meeting. Have the spacecraft, launch, safety, licensing, and mission-operations teams resolve open interfaces before signing. Record assumptions and assign an owner and due date for every action.
- Score the candidates with a mission-fit matrix. Weight orbit and deployment accuracy, schedule and cadence, compatibility, regulatory readiness, integration burden, mission assurance, total cost, and fallback options according to your mission’s priorities.
- Keep a technically compatible backup. Agree on a decision date for switching if the primary launch slips, changes orbit, or cannot accept the payload on schedule.
Prepare a payload data sheet providers can evaluate
Incomplete data produces non-comparable quotes and late integration surprises. Your first information package should include:
- Target orbit, inclination, altitude, local-time or lighting requirements, and allowable deployment dispersion.
- Latest acceptable launch date, earliest acceptable date, and tolerance for schedule movement.
- Launch mass, dimensions, center of gravity, moments of inertia, and the requested separation-system standard.
- Structural load limits, vibration and acoustic limits, thermal constraints, venting characteristics, and battery state at shipment and launch.
- Radio transmitters, frequencies, antenna deployment, electromagnetic-compatibility information, and post-separation operating plan.
- Hazardous materials, pressurized systems, propulsion, stored energy, and any deployment mechanism.
- Spacecraft power, communications, command, and tracking constraints during launch processing and after separation.
- Current status of radio-frequency, remote-sensing, and laser-use licensing, plus an orbital-debris assessment and preliminary end-of-life plan.
Update the sheet at each design review. A quote based on an early mass or envelope estimate may be invalid after a redesign.

Evaluate orbit and schedule before price
Orbit and deployment accuracy
Ask for the planned insertion altitude, inclination, eccentricity, local-time-of-node conditions where relevant, deployment order, and expected separation dispersion. Confirm whether those values are guaranteed, targeted, or dependent on the primary mission. If your payload needs a different orbit, request an orbital-transfer-vehicle option and include its extra mass, power, communications, operations, testing, and price in the comparison.
Launch date and cadence
Obtain a target launch date, the provider’s historical or planned cadence, and the latest date on which your mission remains useful. A frequent rideshare series may offer more replacement opportunities after a delay, while a dedicated vehicle may provide a date tailored to your mission but fewer near-term alternatives. Ask how a primary-mission delay affects your payload and whether your hardware can remain in storage without repeating tests.
Deployment order and operational effects
Deployment order can affect lighting, communications, collision-avoidance planning, and early commissioning. Request the sequence and any constraints on when your spacecraft may transmit or deploy appendages. Do not assume that a rideshare customer can choose the order independently of the primary mission and other secondary payloads.
Check payload compatibility against the ICD
The ICD is the controlling technical reference. Compare your design to it line by line and obtain written acceptance for deviations. At minimum, verify:
- Mechanical fit: external envelope, mounting pattern, separation-system standard, center of gravity, and access for inspection and handling.
- Structural and environmental limits: static loads, vibration, acoustic exposure, shock, thermal ranges, cleanliness, and electromagnetic compatibility.
- Energy and fluids: battery state, inhibit and safing provisions, stored energy, pressure vessels, propulsion, vent paths, and hazardous materials.
- Radio and operations: transmitter restrictions before and after separation, antenna or solar-array deployment timing, frequency coordination, and commands required for safe mode.
- Processing logistics: shipping configuration, lifting points, fueling or battery procedures, access windows, documentation, and test witnessing.
NASA notes that rideshare “do no harm” requirements commonly restrict transmitters, post-separation deployments, and hazardous materials. The exact restrictions vary with the launch provider, integrator, and primary mission, so a design accepted for one flight may not be accepted for another.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Prepare the regulatory and safety package early. Providers commonly request:
- Radio-frequency authorization and frequency-coordination status.
- Remote-sensing or laser-use licensing status, when those payload functions apply.
- Orbital-debris information, disposal assumptions, and a spacecraft-specific debris assessment.
- Materials lists, battery and stored-energy data, pressure and venting information, and hazardous-material declarations.
- Spacecraft-specific drawings, finite-element or mass-properties models, deployment logic, and failure-response procedures.
Treat licensing lead time as a hard gate in the master schedule. A launch slot does not remove the obligation to obtain authorization, and a missing license can prevent integration even when the spacecraft is mechanically ready.
Compare the full cost, not an advertised kilogram rate
Build an all-in cost model for every candidate. Include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Launch-slot or base rideshare charge.
- Integration engineering, reviews, testing, and technical-interchange meetings.
- Dispenser or separation hardware, adapters, and any orbital-transfer vehicle.
- Transport, storage, cleanroom handling, fueling, and repeat testing after a delay.
- Insurance, liability requirements, regulatory work, and mission-assurance activities.
- Operations support, special communications, and any post-separation service.
NASA’s 2025 small-spacecraft technology chapter reports SpaceX Transporter rides starting at $350,000 for approximately 50 kilograms. That figure is an attributed benchmark from the cited chapter, not a guaranteed current quote or an all-in mission price. Request current terms directly from the provider and identify exactly what is included.
Score mission assurance separately from price. A lower quote may carry more schedule, interface, or failure risk; a higher quote may include deeper analysis, hardware, or support. Ask what flight heritage, acceptance testing, anomaly handling, and customer reporting are included rather than inferring assurance from the vehicle’s name.
Rideshare versus dedicated small launch
| Decision axis | Rideshare | Dedicated small launcher |
|---|---|---|
| Orbit control | Usually follows the primary mission; an orbital-transfer stage may add flexibility. | More control over insertion orbit, inclination, and deployment profile. |
| Schedule control | Subject to the primary mission and shared manifest. | Can be tailored to the customer’s target date, subject to vehicle availability. |
| Launch cadence | Can be high on recurring services, but individual dates depend on the primary mission. | NASA characterizes dedicated options as less frequent overall. |
| Transportation cost | Lower by sharing excess capacity; advertised figures may exclude integration and transfer costs. | Substantially higher because one customer carries most vehicle and mission costs. |
| Integration burden | Strict ICD, “do no harm” rules, shared safety analysis, and coordination with other payloads. | More tailored accommodations, but the customer still supplies complete technical and regulatory data. |
| Deployment accuracy | Determined largely by the primary mission unless a transfer vehicle is used. | Can be selected to meet a specific orbit and dispersion requirement. |
| Licensing and safety | Provider and integrator impose mission-specific restrictions; spacecraft licensing remains the owner’s responsibility. | Still requires the owner’s licenses and safety data, with a different vehicle-specific rule set. |
| Fallback options | Potentially more recurring flights, but a changed primary mission can affect all secondaries. | Fewer flights may make a missed window harder to replace. |
SpaceX Transporter is a recurring commercial rideshare benchmark in NASA’s cited material. Rocket Lab’s Electron and other dedicated small launch vehicles are examples of the dedicated category. Obtain current quotes and technical terms rather than treating either example as a universal solution.

Decide whether you need a broker or an integrator
NASA defines a launch broker as an individual or organization that matches a spacecraft with a launch opportunity, usually as a rideshare spacecraft. A broker is useful when your main problem is finding and procuring a suitable slot.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
An integrator goes further by coordinating a multi-mission manifest, running compatibility analyses, and sometimes supplying the CubeSat dispenser or separation system. Choose an integrator when your team needs interface engineering, physical integration, safety analysis, hardware, or manifest coordination.
Ask either intermediary to disclose its scope, authority, subcontractors, assumptions, and fees. Confirm who is contractually responsible for the launch slot, ICD compliance, safety submissions, shipment, dispenser hardware, and communication with the launch provider.
Government procurement pathways
VADR for NASA and NASA-sponsored missions
NASA’s Venture-Class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare (VADR) contract is intended for lower-cost, risk-tolerant science and technology missions. NASA uses firm-fixed-price task orders. The program reported 13 initial providers plus three additions through a 2024 on-ramp, with listed providers including Rocket Lab, SpaceX, Firefly, Momentus, and Northrop Grumman. The contract has a maximum total value of $300 million across its five-year ordering period.
VADR is primarily a NASA procurement route, not a public storefront through which any satellite team can directly reserve a flight. NASA or a NASA-sponsored organization must use the applicable procurement process.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →CSLI for eligible U.S. organizations
CSLI can provide a government flight path for eligible U.S. educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and NASA centers. Selection is contingent on a compatible launch opportunity, and NASA supplies integration or other launch support as needed. It does not finance the spacecraft’s development, so budget separately for design, manufacturing, testing, licensing, operations, and schedule reserves.
Contract questions to settle before signing
Request plain-language answers and place the answers in the contract or its technical annex:
Best Value
- What happens if the primary mission slips, changes orbit, or is canceled?
- Can the provider rebook the spacecraft on a later flight, and under what price and priority?
- When is a refund available, and which costs are non-refundable?
- What milestones trigger customer-caused delay charges or removal from the manifest?
- How are force-majeure events, launch failures, and government restrictions handled?
- What liability, insurance, indemnification, export-control, and confidentiality obligations apply?
- Who owns integration data, analysis models, test results, and anomaly reports?
- Which orbit, deployment accuracy, date, and environmental limits are contractual commitments rather than targets?
Maintain a second opportunity that is technically compatible, not merely another launch date. A backup that uses a different separation standard, envelope, frequency plan, or licensing regime may not be usable without redesign.
A practical scoring matrix
Use a weighted spreadsheet so that a low price cannot hide an impossible orbit or an unmanageable schedule. Score each candidate from 0 (unacceptable) to 5 (fully meets the requirement), then multiply by the mission-specific weight.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Category | Questions to score | Suggested evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Orbit and deployment | Does insertion meet altitude, inclination, lighting, order, and dispersion needs? | Provider orbit target, dispersion statement, transfer-vehicle specification. |
| Schedule and cadence | Can the launch meet the latest useful date, and is there a credible replacement? | Manifest status, target date, cadence, rebooking terms. |
| Payload compatibility | Does the spacecraft meet every ICD, environmental, radio, and hazardous-material rule? | ICD compliance matrix and written deviation approvals. |
| Licensing and safety | Can all authorizations and safety data be complete before integration? | Licensing plan, debris assessment, materials and venting package. |
| Integration scope | Who supplies hardware, analysis, testing, shipment, and manifest coordination? | Statement of work, schedule, responsibility matrix. |
| Mission assurance | What testing, flight heritage, anomaly process, and customer reporting are included? | Assurance plan and contract deliverables. |
| Total cost | What is the complete price after integration, transfer, insurance, transport, and repeats? | Itemized, written, date-stamped quotation. |
| Contract resilience | Are delay, refund, reflight, liability, export-control, and data-rights terms acceptable? | Executed contract and technical annex. |
Common failure modes and recovery actions
The advertised orbit is unusable
Recalculate the mission with the actual insertion orbit and dispersion. If the science or communications plan cannot tolerate it, price an orbital-transfer stage or move to a dedicated launcher before the spacecraft is frozen.
The satellite misses an integration milestone
Ask immediately whether the provider can hold the hardware, move it to a later mission, or accept a reduced test scope. Do not ship an uncertified spacecraft in the hope that paperwork can follow; obtain a written schedule change and cost impact.
Licensing is late
Identify the missing authorization, its responsible organization, and the latest submission date that preserves the launch slot. If that date has passed, use the contractual rebooking and refund provisions rather than assuming the provider will absorb the delay.
A primary mission change invalidates the rideshare
Compare the revised orbit, date, and environment against the signed requirements. If they no longer meet the mission, activate the preselected backup and document the decision against the agreed switching date.
The quote omits “small” costs
Return the quote with every exclusion highlighted. Add integration labor, dispenser hardware, shipping, storage, insurance, regulatory work, transfer operations, and repeat testing before comparing it with a dedicated launch price.
Final decision rule
Select a rideshare when its actual orbit and date satisfy the mission, the spacecraft can meet the ICD and “do no harm” rules without redesign, licensing can clear before integration, and the all-in cost remains materially below a dedicated alternative. Select a dedicated launcher when orbit or schedule control is mission-critical, a transfer stage would erase the rideshare savings, or shared-manifest constraints create unacceptable technical or program risk. In either case, make the choice from written requirements, an itemized quote, and a fallback contract—not from a headline price per kilogram.
