The right NASA archive depends on what you need. Start with the NASA Image and Video Library for searchable public-facing mission media, the Planetary Data System (PDS) for planetary-science products, Earthdata Search for Earth-observation collections, and the NSSDCA Master Catalog for a known spacecraft or legacy record. These services overlap, but none is a complete index of every NASA file.
Identify the mission, spacecraft, instrument, target, or observation date first. Then decide whether you need a shareable image or a research product with labels, calibration information, and provenance. The steps below show how to search, verify, download, and reuse the correct representation.

Choose the NASA archive by your goal
| What you want | Best starting point | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Searchable mission images, video, or audio | NASA Image and Video Library | Keyword discovery, asset pages, metadata, and downloadable media renditions. The web application requires JavaScript. |
| Planetary spacecraft science products | NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) | Mission, target, and discipline-oriented catalogs containing documented imaging and other instrument products. |
| Earth-observation imagery and measurements | NASA Earthdata Search | Collections searchable by subject, time, geography, platform, instrument, and other attributes. Downloads are delivered through discipline-focused DAACs. |
| A known spacecraft’s historical record or specialist holdings | NSSDCA Master Catalog and Image Resources | Permanent-archive records, mission links, and directories to specialized image services and active archives. |
A result in one service does not prove that NASA does not hold the item. Collections can be maintained by different programs, transferred between active and permanent archives, or remain on a mission or investigator site.

1. Start with the narrowest identifier you know
Search using the spacecraft name, mission name, instrument, target, or date rather than a broad phrase such as “NASA space photos.” Try alternate spellings and mission designations. An instrument name can find data when a popular mission nickname does not; a target such as Mars, Titan, or a particular crater can narrow a large mission collection.

2. Use the NASA Image and Video Library for browseable media
Open images.nasa.gov and search the identifier. This library consolidates imagery, video, and audio from more than 60 collections and contained over 140,000 NASA media items according to a NASA STEM page updated May 3, 2023. That figure describes the library at that date, not a verified 2026 inventory.
Open an individual asset instead of saving the thumbnail from a search-results page. The detail view can show the NASA asset identifier, title, description, date, mission or project credit, and available file renditions. Check which rendition is actually offered: a preview may be smaller or compressed, while another link may provide a larger image or a different media format. NASA does not publish one universal resolution or format for every asset.
3. Check the record’s metadata before you download
Confirm that the item is the spacecraft or instrument you intended. Record the acquisition or publication date, mission, instrument, target, credit line, and any stated processing description. If the page supplies a dataset citation or DOI, save it with the file. This information prevents a visually similar but scientifically different image from being misidentified later.

Where can I download NASA mission data?
Planetary spacecraft: use the Planetary Data System
The Planetary Data System is NASA’s long-term archive for digital products returned by planetary missions and for other flight and ground-based acquisitions, including laboratory experiments. Its catalogs and discipline nodes organize products by mission, target, and scientific specialty. Use the current portal and search pages; the homepage has reported a beta redesign, so older screenshots may not match the present interface.

PDS records commonly include product descriptions, labels, documentation, and links to the archived files. A planetary image in PDS is therefore more than a JPEG: it may be a raw detector product, a calibrated image, a derived map, or a collection with associated metadata. Read the product-level description and documentation to learn what processing has occurred and what software or tools are needed. PDS states that archived data and tools are online and free, with reasonable amounts of user support available without charge.
Earth observations: use Earthdata Search
For observations of Earth’s land, ocean, atmosphere, or climate, search NASA Earthdata Search. Refine results by subject, time range, geographic area, platform, instrument, processing level, and collection attributes. A collection record describes the dataset; the actual files are distributed through one of NASA’s discipline-oriented Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs).
An Earthdata Login is required to download Earth science data from DAACs. You can begin discovery and read collection information before signing in, but a download request may redirect you to account authentication. NASA’s current access guidance describes browser, cURL, Wget, and other scripted methods, and recommends the Earthaccess library for larger-scale downloads. Follow the live setup instructions rather than copying credentials into a script or assuming that every NASA portal uses the same account.
Known spacecraft or older holdings: check NSSDCA
The National Space Science Data Center (NSSDCA) Master Catalog is useful when you already know the spacecraft, launch, or mission record you are seeking. NSSDCA is a permanent archive that complements active mission archives. Its image-resource directories also point to specialist services and current archives.

NSSDCA warns that a record may be absent from its catalog because the material is held elsewhere, has not yet been added, is not currently available, or falls outside NSSDCA’s scope. Follow links to a mission, project, or investigator site when the catalog indicates that current data remain there.
How to tell a media image from a science data product
Both may depict the same observation, but they answer different needs.
| Characteristic | Browseable media asset | Scientific data product |
|---|---|---|
| Typical purpose | Viewing, teaching, news, presentations, or general reference | Analysis, measurement, reproducible research, or reprocessing |
| What you receive | An image, video, or audio rendition selected by the archive | Raw, calibrated, or derived files plus labels, metadata, and documentation |
| Where to start | NASA Image and Video Library | PDS for planetary missions; Earthdata Search for Earth observations |
| What to verify | Available rendition, dimensions, date, credit, and processing note | Product level, instrument mode, calibration status, file structure, and citation |
Do not assume that a high-resolution preview is the original instrument output. Conversely, do not use a browse image for quantitative work when the archive provides a calibrated product and the associated documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I get the full-resolution or original image?
- Open the asset or dataset record. Avoid downloading the image embedded in a search-result tile.
- Inspect the rendition or file list. Look for the largest listed dimensions, an original or high-resolution option, or a data-file link. The available choices vary by asset.
- Read the processing description. Determine whether the file is a preview, color composite, cropped presentation image, raw product, calibrated product, or derived visualization.
- Save the identifier and source page. Keep the NASA ID or dataset/product identifier with the downloaded file.
- Download and verify locally. Check the file extension, pixel dimensions, file size, and whether the archive supplied a label or sidecar metadata file. A successful browser download does not by itself establish that you obtained the original instrument product.
The NASA Image and Video Library API supports search and metadata-location workflows for programmatic retrieval. Use its current documentation and the asset’s returned locations rather than hard-coding assumptions about a universal filename, resolution, or rendition inventory.

Which NASA archive has images from a particular spacecraft?
Use this decision sequence when you know the spacecraft but not the archive:
- Search the Image and Video Library for public-facing photos, mission scenes, animations, and released video or audio.
- Search PDS if the spacecraft visited another world, an asteroid, a comet, or the outer solar system and you need instrument products or scientific context.
- Search Earthdata if the platform observed Earth or if the desired record is an Earth-science collection rather than a planetary mission product.
- Search NSSDCA for a permanent catalog record, older mission, or links to specialized image holdings.
- Follow the mission-specific link when an archive says that current files remain on a project, mission, or investigator site.
Heliophysics and astrophysics missions can appear in several of these ecosystems. Choose by the product’s domain and intended use, not only by the spacecraft’s name. A general image may be in the media library while the underlying detector data are in a mission archive or a discipline collection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do I need an account to download NASA data?
Anonymous discovery
You can browse public descriptions and begin searches without assuming that every NASA service requires an account. The media library and many catalog pages expose metadata before authentication.
Earth science downloads
Earthdata Login is required for downloading Earth science data from DAACs. Create or use the account when the collection’s download control requests it, then follow NASA’s current authentication instructions. A login requirement for an Earthdata collection does not mean that the Image and Video Library or PDS uses the same workflow.
Best Value
Planetary and permanent archives
PDS describes its archived data and tools as online and free, with reasonable user support at no charge. Access details can still differ by node or product, so read the specific collection record. NSSDCA delivery likewise varies by collection and by whether the record points to an active external archive.
How to download a complete mission dataset safely
- Define the scientific question. Write down the target, time period, instrument, observation mode, and desired processing level.
- Locate the collection. Use PDS, Earthdata Search, or the relevant mission catalog instead of downloading isolated images first.
- Read the collection documentation. Note coordinate systems, units, calibration status, quality flags, naming conventions, and required tools.
- Test one product. Download a representative file and confirm that your software can open its format and metadata.
- Choose a download method. Use the browser for a few files. For Earthdata collections or other login-enabled services, follow NASA’s current cURL, Wget, API, or Earthaccess guidance for scripted retrieval.
- Preserve the directory structure. Keep labels, ancillary files, checksums, documentation, and readme files with the data unless you have a documented reason to reorganize them.
- Log provenance. Save the collection title, version or release information when supplied, access date, product identifiers, source URL, and citation or DOI.
Can I reuse NASA spacecraft images?
NASA says its content is generally not subject to U.S. copyright, but that is not a blanket license for every file or every use. The agency’s insignia, logotype, and identifiers are protected, and imagery must not be used to imply NASA endorsement. Material credited to an individual, contractor, news organization, commercial provider, or another institution may have separate terms.
Check the item-level credit
Use the credit printed on the asset page, not a generic “NASA” label when a project, investigator, laboratory, or instrument team is named. Preserve that credit in captions and metadata.
Follow NSSDCA’s image guidance
NSSDCA’s Photo Gallery FAQ says gallery items are generally public domain unless otherwise noted, asks users to credit NASA and NSSDCA, and asks for project or person credit when the page supplies it. That FAQ is dated April 7, 2016, so check the current item-level note and current NASA media policy before publication or commercial distribution.
Cite scientific datasets
For research products, cite the collection actually used and include access information. Earthdata encourages dataset citation for reproducibility. A non-NASA dataset hosted through the Earthdata system can remain subject to the sponsoring organization’s license, so read that collection’s terms.
What to save with every downloaded file
- NASA asset, product, or dataset identifier.
- Mission, spacecraft, instrument, target, and observation date.
- Original record URL and download date.
- File rendition, dimensions, format, and processing level when stated.
- Credit line, copyright or license note, and endorsement restrictions.
- Dataset citation, DOI, collection version, and documentation links when supplied.
- Labels, calibration files, ancillary data, and checksums included by the archive.
Why a NASA search can return no result
- Wrong archive: A media search may not index a calibrated planetary product, and an Earthdata collection may not appear in the media library.
- Different identifier: Try the formal mission name, spacecraft serial designation, instrument, target, or alternate spelling.
- Mission-specific storage: NSSDCA may link to a project or investigator archive that holds newer files.
- Archive scope: NSSDCA explicitly notes that some material is absent because it is not yet available there, is elsewhere, has not been added, or is outside its remit.
- Migration or interface changes: NASA Earth science sites are undergoing migration through the end of 2026, so collection paths and page locations can move.
- Access state: A collection can be discoverable while its download requires Earthdata Login or a separate delivery service.
When a result is missing, record the terms you tried, then move to the next applicable archive rather than concluding that the spacecraft produced no such image or data.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-publication and research checklist
- Have you identified the mission, spacecraft, instrument, target, or date?
- Did you choose media, planetary science data, Earth-observation data, or a legacy record as your goal?
- Did you open the record and verify the exact asset or product rather than saving a thumbnail?
- Did you distinguish a preview or presentation image from raw, calibrated, or derived data?
- Did you check whether Earthdata Login is required for the selected download?
- Did you save the identifier, source page, credit, citation, and license note?
- Did you avoid implying NASA endorsement or reusing third-party material without permission?
- If the first archive had no result, did you check the other relevant NASA route or mission-specific link?
