The App Store does not guarantee that a game is independent, so finding an indie title is a two-part job: use Apple’s discovery tools to build a shortlist, then verify each game’s developer and listing details. On an iPhone or iPad, open the App Store and browse Games or Today, search by title, genre, category, or developer, and inspect the listing before tapping Get or the displayed price. If your device has Apple’s separate Games app, you can also use its Home, Search, Arcade, and Library sections.
This guide covers the practical workflow, how to tell free and paid downloads apart, what to check before installing, and why a game may not appear in your country or on your device.

What “indie game” means on the App Store
Apple’s storefront organizes games by categories, charts, editorial collections, metadata, and engagement signals. It does not apply a universal App Store badge that certifies a game as independent. “Indie” is therefore a discovery preference rather than a technical filter.

Why availability differs
The App Store is regional. Apple says availability varies by country or region, and an individual game can be removed, restricted, renamed, or released later in one storefront than another. Device and operating-system requirements also differ. Always treat the listing shown on your own iPhone or iPad as the authoritative version for your account.
Where to look for indie games
Browse the App Store’s Games tab
Open the App Store on an iPhone or iPad and select Games. Apple’s Games area includes categories such as action, adventure, racing, and puzzles, along with new releases, charts, and recommendations. Browsing is useful when you know the kind of game you want but not the title.
Open a category, scan the featured rows, and tap a title that looks promising. Because categories affect browse placement and the storefront changes over time, the exact rows and labels you see may differ from another person’s device or country.

Use Today for editorial collections
The Today tab contains editorial stories and collections. These features can group games around a theme, season, creator, or gameplay idea instead of simply listing the most downloaded titles. Editorial selection is a useful route to unfamiliar studios, but it is still a selection rather than a complete index of independent games.
Search by title, genre, category, or developer
Tap Search and enter a game name if you already have one. You can also search for a genre, a category such as “puzzle,” or a developer’s name. Apple says App Store search uses listing metadata and engagement signals. That helps relevant results appear, but it does not promise that every suitable game will be returned or that ranking is an editorial endorsement.

When you do not know a title, combine a broad term with a narrower idea, such as a genre and a mechanic. Then open several listings rather than choosing the first result. Compare the developer names and descriptions to separate games that merely share a keyword.
Check the Indie Games chart when it appears
Apple’s 2024 App Store Risk Assessment Report specifically listed Indie Games among chart categories. If that chart appears in your storefront, it is a direct starting point for independent-game discovery. Chart contents are based on recent App Store downloads and can change, so the chart is neither a complete list nor a judgment of quality.
A game’s absence from the chart does not mean it is not independent. Charts reflect recent activity, while many small releases have limited launch visibility or serve a specialized audience.
Using Apple’s Games app
Some devices offer Apple’s separate Games app. Apple’s support guide published September 23, 2025, says to update to the latest operating-system version before using it. The app’s exact availability and the games shown can vary by device, region, and compatibility.
Home
Home presents new releases, top charts, and personalized suggestions. Use it to scan what is currently being surfaced, then open a listing and verify the developer instead of assuming that a recommendation is an indie title.

Search
Search is the direct route when you know a title or developer. It is also useful for checking whether a game you found elsewhere has an App Store listing in your country.
Arcade
Arcade shows games in Apple’s subscription catalog. Apple describes this catalog as a curated collection of premium games without ads or in-app purchases for the games included in that catalog. An Arcade listing is not the same thing as a standalone free download, and not every indie game belongs to Arcade. Subscription availability and individual game compatibility can vary.
Library
Library contains installed and previously acquired games. It is useful for redownloading a game you obtained before, even if you no longer remember its name. A previously acquired title may show a redownload control rather than Get or a price.
How to evaluate a listing before downloading
Open the game’s product page before committing. The listing contains the evidence you need to decide whether the game suits your device, budget, and expectations.

Read reviews for problems, not just scores
A high score can hide an issue that matters to you. Sort through recent reviews and look for repeated reports about crashes, battery use, touch controls, save synchronization, advertisements, or performance on older devices. Reviews describe other users’ experiences and can become outdated after an update, so compare dates and the current version information on the listing.

Check the privacy and age sections
The privacy label is the developer’s disclosure of data practices, not an independent guarantee that the app is risk-free. Read it alongside the age rating and content descriptors. A game can be technically compatible yet unsuitable for a child, a shared family device, or a workplace phone.
How to download an indie game
- Connect to the internet. App Store use requires an internet connection. Wi-Fi is preferable for a large file, but a permitted cellular connection may also work.
- Open the correct store. Launch the App Store on your iPhone or iPad, or open the Games app if it is available on your device.
- Find the title. Browse Games, open an editorial collection in Today, use Search, or select a result from a chart.
- Open the product page. Verify the developer, compatibility, file size, language, age rating, privacy information, and reviews before downloading.
- Confirm the price model. A free game shows Get. A paid game shows its displayed price. A game in Arcade requires the applicable subscription and still needs to be compatible with your device and region.
- Tap Get or the displayed price. Do not assume that a game is free because it appears in a chart or recommendation.
- Authenticate if prompted. Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode, according to the settings on your device.
- Wait for installation. The app icon will show download progress. Keep enough storage available and avoid interrupting the connection for a large download.
- Open the game. After installation, tap Open on the listing or launch the icon from the Home Screen or Library. The game may request additional downloads or account permissions inside the app; review those prompts separately.
Redownload a game you already acquired
If you previously obtained the game, the store may show a redownload control instead of Get or a price. In the Games app, check Library. You still need to be signed in with the Apple Account associated with the acquisition, and the title must remain available for your region and device.
Free, paid, and subscription games: how to tell the difference

Apple’s documented distinction is simple: Get indicates a free download, while a displayed price indicates a paid download. Neither label by itself tells you whether the game contains optional purchases after installation. Check the product page and the game’s own purchase disclosures.

The title is missing from search
- Try the exact title, then the developer name or a broader category.
- Check spelling and search from the App Store rather than a web result that may point to another country.
- Look in Games, Today, or the Indie Games chart if that chart is available.
- Consider that the game may have been removed, renamed, released only in selected regions, or not yet published for your storefront.
The listing says it is incompatible
Read the required operating-system version and supported device models. Updating to the latest operating system can help when the hardware supports it, but an older device may still be excluded. Apple’s Games app guide also notes that game compatibility varies; the listing for your device is the relevant check.

The download button is unavailable
- Confirm that you are signed in to an Apple Account and that your internet connection is working.
- Check available storage against the listed file size, allowing extra room for installation and updates.
- Review country or region availability and payment requirements for a paid title.
- If you previously owned the game, use the same Apple Account and look in your purchase history or Games app Library.
The game is in Arcade but you cannot play it
Arcade is a subscription catalog, not a promise that every game is available everywhere. Confirm that your subscription is active, the title is offered in your country, and your device meets the game’s requirements. Apple can change catalog membership, so an older recommendation may no longer match the current Arcade tab.
How Apple’s discovery systems affect what you see
Apple says categories influence browse placement, while search uses listing metadata and engagement signals. Those mechanisms explain why a well-described game can appear for a genre query and why a popular release may rise in charts. They do not mean that search results include every relevant indie game, that a high position represents editorial approval, or that a lower-ranked title is inferior.
Use discovery surfaces to generate candidates, then make the decision from each listing. This approach also helps when a game is new, niche, or unavailable in a chart dominated by recent downloads.
Features that affect play after download
Game Center
A listing may identify Game Center support for achievements, leaderboards, or related social features. Its presence is optional and does not determine whether you can download the game.

Some games include online multiplayer, challenges, or community tools. Check the description and reviews for connection requirements, account creation, and whether the social features are central to the experience.
Controllers
Compatible-controller support can improve play or navigation on supported games, but a controller is not needed to locate or download an App Store title. Confirm compatibility on the listing or in Apple’s Games app information before buying hardware.
A repeatable shortlist method
- Start broad: browse a Games category, Today collection, search phrase, or Indie Games chart.
- Collect several candidates: do not treat the first result as the complete set of options.
- Verify independence: inspect the developer and studio catalog rather than relying on an assumed label.
- Filter for fit: remove titles that fail your device, operating-system, language, age, storage, privacy, or feature requirements.
- Compare price models: distinguish Get, a one-time price, and Arcade membership.
- Read current reviews: look for recurring issues relevant to your hardware and play style.
- Download from the listing: authenticate, install, and retain the listing if you need to check updates or redownload later.
What Apple has added for game discovery
Apple announced the Games app in June 2025 and reported more than 200 Apple Arcade games at that time. That figure is dated and should not be treated as a current catalog count. The announcement also quoted indie developer Zach Gage, cofounder of Puzzmo, describing how the app could integrate Puzzmo’s social community features into players’ daily routines. Apple quoted Doghowl Games cofounder Glib Platonov saying that new challenges and a social layer represented a major change for developers and players.
These statements illustrate why the Games app can be useful for discovery and social features, but they do not certify every game in the app as independent or establish that a particular title is available in every storefront.
The practical answer
To find indie games, browse the App Store’s Games and Today sections, search by genre or developer, and check the Indie Games chart when it appears. Then open each listing and verify the developer, compatibility, file size, languages, age rating, privacy information, reviews, and price model. Tap Get for a free listing or the displayed price for a paid one, authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode, and use the Games app’s Library for redownloads. Because Apple’s storefront, charts, catalogs, prices, and regional availability change, the listing visible on your own device is the final authority.
