How to Find and Download Hubble Images from NASA and ESA Archives

For a polished picture you can view or share, start with ESA/Hubble’s image archive and Advanced Image Search. For calibrated observations, FITS files, and other research products, use NASA’s Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST): Hubble Search handles standard HST datasets, while the MAST Portal can find Hubble Legacy Archive (HLA) products by setting Mission to HLA. ESA’s eHST Science Archive is a European mirror of public Hubble data in MAST.

Search by an object name first, then try coordinates or another catalogue designation. Narrow the results by instrument, title, subject, image or release ID, and inspect the product type before downloading. A missing result does not prove that Hubble never observed the target: the observation may be proprietary, or the archive may have returned spectroscopy rather than an image.

Choose the archive that matches your goal

The same Hubble observation can produce a public-facing JPEG, a calibrated FITS image, and several supporting files. The quickest route depends on which one you need.

Build a search strategy before you click Download

Decide what “the image” means for your project. A classroom slide, web article, or social post usually needs a rendered file with a title and credit. Photometry, astrometry, color calibration, or your own image combination requires the underlying science product. Starting with that distinction prevents a common mistake: downloading a beautiful preview and later discovering that it does not contain the pixel values or metadata needed for analysis.

Write down the target name, approximate coordinates, preferred instrument, and desired product type before searching. Object names are not unique across catalogs, and an archive may index a target under a formal designation rather than its popular name. Coordinates provide a useful second route, while an image ID or release ID can take you directly back to a known record.

Keep the final record URL or identifier with the downloaded file. That small step makes it possible to distinguish two releases of the same target, explain why a JPEG and a FITS file look different, and repeat the download after an archive interface changes.

Download a released image from ESA/Hubble

1. Open Advanced Image Search

Use ESA/Hubble’s image archive and open its Advanced Image Search. Enter the commonly used target name, such as a nebula, galaxy, star cluster, or planet. If the name produces no useful result, search with the target’s coordinates or a different catalogue designation.

Names are convenient but not universal. A target can be indexed under a catalogue identifier, an abbreviated name, or coordinates, so changing the query is often more effective than assuming the archive has no observation.

2. Refine the result set

Apply the filters that correspond to your question. The archive exposes fields for instrument, title, subject, image identifier, and release identifier, along with other metadata. If you are looking for a particular camera, restrict the search to it rather than scanning every result.

An ESA/Hubble tutorial highlights ACS, WFC3, and WFPC2 as useful general-purpose cameras. Treat that as practical tutorial guidance, not a rule that one of those instruments is always appropriate: Hubble’s instrument choice depends on the observation and scientific objective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instrument filtering is especially useful when a target has been observed repeatedly. It can separate a wide-field optical view from an ultraviolet or infrared observation and reduce the chance of selecting a visually attractive result that does not match your intended wavelength or field of view.

3. Inspect the record and preview

Select a result to open its record. Check the target, title, instrument, release information, and any notes before saving the file. The preview helps you distinguish a released image from a result that is primarily a spectrum or another non-image product.

Some records provide browser-based adjustments. For a quick result, choose the offered image format and size that fit your use, then save the generated image. A smaller file is easier to share; a larger offered size preserves more detail for slides, posters, or cropping.

Do not confuse a larger download with a new observation. The archive may offer several render sizes derived from the same processed image. Record the selected size and any browser adjustment if the exact appearance matters to your publication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Choose a download format

JPEG and other offered image formats are convenient for ordinary viewing and publication workflows. If you need measurements, linear pixel values, or further scientific processing, do not substitute a JPEG for the data product; use a FITS file from an archive route that provides it.

Find Hubble science data in MAST

MAST Hubble Search for standard HST products

MAST’s Hubble Search is the normal starting point for standard Hubble Space Telescope dataset searches. Search by target, coordinates, or observation identifiers, then inspect the returned product categories. A single observation can have multiple files, so read the product description instead of downloading the first item automatically.

Use the search results to identify the observation and then select the calibrated or otherwise relevant product offered for that dataset. The exact files vary by observation and instrument; the archive record is the authority for what is available.

When several product categories are listed, check whether a file is an observation, a calibrated product, a preview, or an auxiliary file. Downloading every file can create a confusing folder and unnecessary storage use. Select the category that answers your question, and retain the observation identifier so related files can be found later.

MAST Portal for HLA products

MAST’s current guidance distinguishes the Portal from Hubble Search for HLA discovery. In the MAST Portal, set Mission to HLA before searching. This searches HLA datasets directly and is the appropriate route when your goal is an HLA-derived product rather than a standard HST query.

MAST has announced that the older HLA search interface is on a retirement path during calendar year 2026. The data products are not being removed: MAST states that the HLA products remain in MAST while the HLA search interface is retired. If an old bookmark stops working, move the search to the Portal and check MAST’s current instructions.

How Hubble Search and the Portal differ

Hubble Search is designed around standard HST searches and can make HLA-derived products available through product selection for selected HST datasets. It does not directly search for HLA products in the same way as the Portal. If you cannot find an HLA result in Hubble Search, repeat the query in the Portal with Mission set to HLA rather than concluding that the product is unavailable.

Use the eHST Science Archive as an ESA-hosted route

eHST is an ESA-hosted mirror of public Hubble data held in MAST. It is useful when you prefer an ESA interface or need a European route to the same public archive holdings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ESA’s 17 December 2025 eHST update describes an updated image viewer and a download panel. In that panel, filter the files you want and retrieve the selected products rather than downloading every file associated with an observation. The mirror contains public data; a still-proprietary observation will not become public merely because you search through eHST.

Because eHST mirrors public MAST holdings, it is not a separate collection of unreleased observations. If a product is absent in both services, try alternate names or coordinates and check its public-release status before changing archives.

Pick the right file type

JPEG and other rendered images

A rendered image is the practical choice when the goal is to look at the picture, place it in a presentation, or share it online. Rendered products encode display choices such as contrast and color, so they are not a substitute for detector data. Keep the archive record’s credit information with the file.

Rendered files are also the simplest way to compare public releases. However, color in a composite is a presentation convention, not necessarily a direct view of what human eyes would see. Use the title, description, and processing notes on the record when explaining what the colors represent.

FITS for analysis

FITS is a specialized astronomical data format intended for analysis and further processing. It can preserve scientific information that is not represented in a display-oriented JPEG. FITS files may look blank, overly dark, or otherwise unfamiliar in a basic image viewer because their values are not mapped to ordinary screen brightness automatically.

ESA/Hubble points readers toward FITS Liberator, Photoshop, and GIMP as examples of tools that can be used for more advanced processing. These are optional processing choices, not archive requirements. The archive record and the software documentation should determine which settings and workflow are appropriate for a particular file.

Before converting a FITS file to a shareable image, retain the original file and note the software and display stretch used. A conversion can change contrast, crop the field, or combine channels, so preserving the source protects the ability to revisit the result.

Why two downloads can look different

A preview, a browser-adjusted JPEG, and a FITS file can all originate from the same observation while showing different contrast, color mapping, cropping, or combination of exposures. Compare the product metadata and processing notes before treating visual differences as different observations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the routes by workflow, not just by branding

The most useful comparison is practical. ESA/Hubble favors a short browser workflow: identify a public release, inspect a preview, choose a format and size, and save the image. MAST favors product discovery: locate the observation, examine its product families, and select the calibrated or derived file that fits the task. The MAST Portal adds a direct HLA mission search, while eHST offers the same public holdings through an ESA-hosted viewer and filtered download panel.

For one occasional download, the browser is usually sufficient. For many targets or a reproducible project, Astroquery avoids repeating manual searches and lets you preserve query parameters. In either case, the target name, coordinates, instrument, product identifier, and release status are the key details to compare across services.

Search problems and what to try next

Symptom Likely explanation Next action
No result for a familiar object name The archive uses another designation, or the target has no released Hubble image under that name. Search by coordinates and alternate catalogue names; then check the archive’s metadata and release fields.
Results appear to be spectra rather than pictures The observation may be spectroscopic, or the search was not restricted to image products. Inspect the product type and refine the query by instrument or image-related metadata.
An observation has no preview The data may still be in a proprietary period or may not have a public rendered image. Look for a released observation or check again after the release period.
An old HLA bookmark no longer works The legacy HLA search interface is being retired during 2026. Use the MAST Portal with Mission set to HLA; use Hubble Search for standard HST searches.
A downloaded FITS file will not open in a normal viewer FITS is a scientific data format, not an ordinary consumer image format. Open it with astronomy-aware software and apply an appropriate display stretch before judging the data.
The image is too small for the intended use The record offers multiple sizes or the browser saved a preview. Return to the image record and select the larger available size or the archive’s full offered product.

Understand proprietary periods

Some Hubble observations are restricted to the observing team for a proprietary period before becoming public. During that interval, an archive search may show limited metadata, no preview, or no downloadable public product. A no-result search therefore has three possible meanings: the target was not observed, the query used the wrong designation, or the observation is not yet public.

Use Astroquery for repeatable access

MAST lists Astroquery as a Python-oriented way to access archive functions. It is useful when you need to repeat a search, build a reproducible workflow, or retrieve many related products rather than clicking through individual records.

Start by identifying the target, coordinates, mission, and product category you need in the web interface. Then translate those search constraints into your Astroquery workflow and verify that the returned product identifiers match the observation you intended. Keep the identifiers and query parameters with your analysis so another person can reproduce the retrieval.

Automated retrieval does not bypass access rules. Astroquery can return only products that the service makes available to your account and query, so a proprietary observation remains restricted until its public release.

Credits, rights, and responsible reuse

Public availability does not establish one universal reuse license for every Hubble image, generated preview, or derived file. Before republication or commercial use, open the specific image or product record and read its credit and rights information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give credit exactly as the individual archive record requests. Do not replace an archive-specified credit with a generic attribution, and do not assume that a file downloaded from a public interface can be sold or relicensed without checking the record’s terms.

For a composite or browser-adjusted image, preserve both the archive credit and a brief note that the file was processed, if the record or your workflow calls for one. Keeping the original identifier beside the credit helps readers locate the same release even if the archive’s search interface changes.

A notable example: the Hubble Legacy Field

The Hubble Legacy Field demonstrates why archive products can combine observations made over many years. An ESA/Hubble announcement from 2019 described the field as containing roughly 265,000 galaxies assembled from 16 years of observations. Those figures describe that historical field, not the current number of images or galaxies in the entire archive.

Garth Illingworth, whose team assembled the field, said: “Now that we have gone wider than in previous surveys, we are harvesting many more distant galaxies in the largest such dataset ever produced.” The example is useful context when evaluating a large composite product: it is a processed scientific compilation, not a single exposure that can be interpreted in isolation.

A practical download checklist

  1. Decide whether you need a presentation-ready image or research data.
  2. Use ESA/Hubble Advanced Image Search for released imagery; use MAST Hubble Search, the MAST Portal, or eHST for archive data.
  3. Search by the common target name, then try coordinates or another catalogue designation.
  4. Refine by instrument and image, title, subject, or release metadata where available.
  5. Open the record and verify the target, instrument, product type, and release status.
  6. Choose a rendered format for viewing or a FITS product for analysis.
  7. If no preview appears, check for proprietary restrictions and non-image products.
  8. For HLA searches in 2026, use the MAST Portal with Mission set to HLA instead of relying on the legacy interface.
  9. Save the archive record’s credit and rights information with the downloaded file.
  10. For repeatable work, save the query terms, product identifier, file name, and processing notes alongside the download.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I download a Hubble picture for a presentation?

Start with ESA/Hubble’s image archive and Advanced Image Search. Search by the object name or coordinates, open the image record, review the preview and credit, then choose the offered JPEG or other rendered size that fits your presentation.

Can I get Hubble images in FITS format?

Yes, when the observation or derived product offers FITS through MAST, eHST, or another archive product route. FITS is intended for scientific analysis and may require astronomy-aware software and a display stretch before it looks like an ordinary image.

Why does an archive search return no Hubble image?

Try coordinates and alternate catalogue designations. The result may be a spectrum rather than an image, the target may have no released image under that name, or the observation may still be in a proprietary period.

What is the difference between MAST Hubble Search and the MAST Portal?

Hubble Search is designed for standard HST dataset searches and can expose HLA-derived products for selected datasets. The Portal searches HLA products directly when you set Mission to HLA, making it the better route for an HLA-focused query.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is eHST a different set of Hubble observations?

eHST is an ESA-hosted mirror of public Hubble data in MAST. Its updated viewer and download panel provide another way to select and retrieve public files, but it does not make proprietary observations public.

Are Hubble archive images automatically free for commercial reuse?

Do not assume that. Open the specific image or product record and follow its credit and rights information before republication or commercial use. Public download alone does not establish one universal license for every rendered or derived file.

Why does my FITS file look black or blank?

FITS stores scientific values rather than an ordinary screen-ready brightness mapping. Use astronomy-aware software and apply an appropriate stretch; the raw file may contain valid data even when a basic viewer displays little or nothing.

What changed for Hubble Legacy Archive searches in 2026?

MAST is retiring the older HLA search interface during calendar year 2026, while keeping HLA data products in MAST. Use the MAST Portal with Mission set to HLA and check current MAST guidance if an old bookmark fails.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use ESA/Hubble when you want a released, presentation-ready image with a preview. Use MAST Hubble Search for standard HST datasets, the MAST Portal with Mission set to HLA for direct HLA discovery, and eHST for an ESA-hosted mirror of public MAST files. Search by name, then coordinates or alternate designations; verify the product type, release status, and record credit before downloading.

Choose JPEG or another rendered format for viewing and sharing, FITS for analysis, and keep the archive identifier and rights information with every file. If a result is missing, check alternate names, spectroscopy, proprietary restrictions, and the current 2026 HLA interface rather than assuming Hubble never observed the target.
