Find a wallpaper from a reputable image library or your phone’s built-in collection, choose a portrait image with enough detail for your screen, and preview its crop before applying it. There is no single pixel size that fits every phone: the right dimensions depend on your model and how its wallpaper controls crop the image.
Where to find phone wallpapers
Start with your phone’s built-in wallpaper collection or an established image library such as Unsplash. Search by both subject and style to get more useful results—for example, “misty mountain portrait wallpaper,” “minimal dark botanical phone background,” or “abstract warm gradient mobile wallpaper.” These are search suggestions, not rankings or measured recommendations.

When possible, open the image’s original page and use the library’s normal download option rather than saving a small search-result preview. Look for a portrait composition, enough detail for the part of the image that will remain visible, and a layout that keeps the main subject clear of the clock, widgets, and app icons.
How to judge whether a wallpaper will look sharp
Check the image against your phone, not a generic size guide
Phone displays and wallpaper crops vary by model. Check your phone’s model or display specifications, then compare the image with the area you expect to use. Desktop and 16:9 dimensions are not reliable universal targets for a phone wallpaper, and there is no one pixel threshold established for all current iPhone and Android models.

Look at detail and composition together
- Resolution: Prefer the full-size download when the source offers one. A small preview may look fine on a search page but lose sharpness when enlarged across a large display.
- Orientation: Portrait-oriented images often need less cropping on a phone, but still check the preview on your device.
- Safe space: Choose a composition where the important subject will not sit behind lock-screen text or home-screen icons.
- Rights: Notice whether the image contains a recognizable person, logo, or artwork, since the photo license may not cover those separate rights.
How to download and set a wallpaper on Google Pixel
Google’s documented workflow is for Pixel phones; menus and available choices can vary by model and software version. Use the phone’s preview before applying the image so you can see the crop in context.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpapers & style, then Change wallpaper.
- Choose a preset category or tap Choose a photo.
- Select the image you want to use.
- If prompted, choose which screen to change, review the preview, and apply the wallpaper. Pixel may offer Home screen, lock screen, or both, depending on the device and software.
These steps come from Google Pixel Help; they should not be treated as universal Android directions. Current exact iPhone instructions are not established here, so use the wallpaper controls documented for your iPhone model and iOS version rather than following Pixel menu names.

Check the license before using a downloaded image
Unsplash says, “Unsplash visuals are made to be used freely.” Its standard license permits free downloading, copying, modifying, distributing, performing, and using images, including commercially, without required permission or attribution. It also prohibits selling images without significant modification and compiling images to replicate a similar or competing service. These are Unsplash’s terms, not a general rule for images from other sites.
Unsplash’s terms explain that a photo license does not automatically clear trademarks, recognizable people, or works of art or authorship visible in the image. Separate permission may be needed depending on how you use or share it—particularly if you republish it, use it commercially, or suggest that someone endorses a product or organization. Unsplash Help Center’s August 8, 2025 guidance says images can be used for most personal, commercial, and editorial projects without asking permission or crediting the contributor or Unsplash, while directing users to the terms for prohibited uses: Can I use Unsplash photos for personal or commercial projects?

Unsplash+ is a separate paid subscription with a separate license. The current license describes an unlimited, perpetual, nonexclusive, worldwide license for downloaded subscription images, including commercial use without required attribution. It says a warranty may cover up to US$10,000 per file if the image is used properly; that cap is conditional, not unlimited protection. Check the full current subscription terms before relying on it. A typical personal wallpaper does not, on the available information, require Unsplash+.
