How to Find and Download Games Included With PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

To find a PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title, open PlayStation Plus on your PS5 or PS4, choose Game Catalog, select a game available with your membership and console, then choose Download. Extra and Premium include the Game Catalog; Premium also adds the Classics Catalog and streaming benefits. Catalog access is not permanent ownership, so check the game’s current listing before you download it.

The two consoles use different menu paths, and a title appearing in a catalog does not mean it is available to every member or on every console. This guide shows where to look, what to verify on the listing, and what to do if the Download option is missing.

What you need before you start

You need an active PlayStation Plus membership at the right tier and a console that supports the game. Sony includes Game Catalog access with Extra and Premium, but not Essential. Premium includes the Game Catalog as well as the Classics Catalog and additional benefits, including Game Trials and streaming for many catalog games. See Sony’s current plan and game catalog information for the US service.

  • Extra: access to eligible games in the Game Catalog.
  • Premium: access to the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus benefits such as Game Trials and streaming for many catalog games.
  • Essential: does not include Game Catalog access.

The instructions below follow Sony’s US support pages. Catalog availability and service details can differ by region, so use the PlayStation Store or catalog for your country to verify a specific game.

It helps to identify which kind of PlayStation Plus game you are trying to access before you browse. The Game Catalog is the rotating library associated with Extra and Premium. The Classics Catalog is an additional Premium benefit. Monthly Games are a separate monthly offer that members can add to their library while their membership is active. These labels describe different benefits and do not mean the same thing.

If you have Essential and cannot find the Game Catalog, that is a tier limitation rather than a different menu location. If you have Extra, you can look for eligible Game Catalog titles, but Extra does not include the Premium-only Classics Catalog or Premium streaming benefits described here. If you have Premium, the Game Catalog remains available alongside those additional benefits; a specific game still has to be offered for your region, tier, and console.

Where to find the Game Catalog on PS5

  1. From the PS5 Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
  2. Go to the Benefits tab.
  3. Select Game Catalog.
  4. Choose a title and check that its listing shows it is available with your membership and on your console.
  5. Select Download to install it.

For Sony’s current PS5 instructions, see How to access and download PlayStation Plus Game Catalog games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important point in this route is to open the Game Catalog specifically, then use the individual title listing to confirm eligibility. A title’s presence in a browsing area is not a substitute for checking its listing. Confirm the option and platform shown for the game you intend to play, then choose Download when it is offered for your console.

If the title page does not offer a download for your PS5, do not assume the game is broken or that every catalog title has a PS5 version. Check the displayed platform and current regional listing. Sony states that a PS5 game can only be downloaded to a PS5; the presence of a catalog entry does not establish that every game can be installed on both PS4 and PS5.

Where to find the Game Catalog on PS4

  1. Open the PS4 function screen.
  2. Select PlayStation Plus.
  3. Scroll to Game Catalog.
  4. Choose an eligible title, confirm that it is available for your membership and console, and select Download.

The PS4 menu route is different from the PS5 route, so look for the catalog from the function screen rather than the PS5 Benefits tab. Sony’s support instructions cover both consoles.

As on PS5, choose the Game Catalog rather than assuming all PlayStation Plus content is in one place. When you open a title, look at the listing before downloading: eligibility depends on your membership and the version offered for your console. The task is complete once you choose Download for an eligible title. If the game is not offered for PS4, browsing it on a PS4 does not make it a downloadable PS4 game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not try to follow the PS5 steps verbatim on PS4. The PS5 route goes through the Benefits tab; on PS4, Sony directs members to PlayStation Plus on the function screen and then to the Game Catalog. If you have both consoles, use the steps for the console on which you plan to install and play the game.

How to confirm a game is included for you

Before downloading, check the title’s current PlayStation Store or Game Catalog listing. A game’s presence in a catalog does not by itself confirm that it is available to every member, in every region, or on every console. Sony’s US catalog and support pages do not establish worldwide catalog parity; the listing in your local PlayStation Store is the relevant check for your account and region.

  • Check your membership: the Game Catalog requires Extra or Premium. Premium is also the tier associated with the Classics Catalog and streaming benefits.
  • Check the platform: a PS5 game can only be downloaded to a PS5. Do not assume that a game listed in the catalog has a downloadable version for both PS4 and PS5.
  • Check current availability: catalog titles can have end dates and can be removed from the service. Access through a membership is not a purchase or permanent ownership.
  • Check the local listing: catalog availability can vary by region, and the live listing is more useful than an old game list.

These checks answer different questions. Your membership tier answers whether you have access to that benefit. The platform answers whether the title can be downloaded to the console you are using. The current listing answers whether the title remains available and whether it is offered in your region. Passing one check does not settle the others: for example, having Premium does not make a PS5 game downloadable to a PS4, and seeing a game in a catalog description does not guarantee it is still available now.

Catalog availability can change. Sony says some Game Catalog or Classics Catalog games have an end date and are removed from the service. Membership access therefore should not be treated as a purchase or a promise of permanent ownership. If you are deciding whether to start a game, or return to one you played before, check its current listing rather than relying on an old list, an earlier download, or a past announcement.

Sony describes the catalog as containing hundreds of games, but that is not a dated count. For what is available now, use the live US catalog or the PlayStation Store listing for your region. Sony also posts service updates on its What’s New on PS Plus page. A general catalog description can help you understand the benefit, but the live listing is the place to confirm an individual game.

For a quick check, read the title listing with four questions in mind: Is this the game benefit you meant to access? Does your active membership tier include it? Is it currently offered in your region? Does the listing provide a version and play option supported by your console or device? If any answer is unclear, verify it in the local Store or catalog before treating the game as included.

Game Catalog downloads are different from Monthly Games

PlayStation Plus offers both monthly games and catalog games, but they are different benefits. Monthly Games are offered monthly and can be added to your library while your membership is active. Game Catalog titles are part of a rotating library available to Extra and Premium members; adding or downloading one does not turn it into a permanently owned game.

Use the Game Catalog route above when you want to browse the Extra or Premium library. If you are looking for a Monthly Game, follow the monthly-games listing and its instructions instead. Sony explains both types of access on its PlayStation Plus game access and monthly games page.

This distinction matters if you are trying to find a game you remember seeing previously. A Monthly Game is a monthly offer that can be added to your library while the membership is active. A Game Catalog title belongs to a changing selection, so its availability can end when it leaves the service. Downloading a catalog title is not the same as buying it, and it does not make the title permanent. If you cannot find the game, check whether you are looking in the right benefit area and whether the current listing still offers it.

In practical terms, ask whether you want to browse the rotating Extra/Premium library or access a Monthly Game offer. For the former, follow the console-specific Game Catalog steps in this guide. For the latter, use Sony’s monthly-games instructions. That avoids treating the Monthly Games list as if it were the full Game Catalog, or assuming that a title downloaded from the Game Catalog has been claimed as a Monthly Game.

Where downloaded games appear

After downloading, look in your console’s Game Library if you need to find the title again. Sony states: “Your PlayStation Plus games can also be found in your Game Library.” The wording is from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US Game Catalog support page.

The Game Library is useful when you have already downloaded a PlayStation Plus game and want to locate it again. It is not a guarantee that every game associated with your membership remains playable indefinitely. A Game Catalog title remains subject to its current service availability, so check the listing if a title you previously accessed is no longer available in the way you expect.

Download or stream: which route should you use?

Downloading installs a game on a compatible console. Streaming lets an eligible Premium member play a supported game without downloading it, but only when the title listing offers streaming. Not every game has both options.

Access route Membership and availability Device and connection
Download Requires the right active membership and a title currently available to you. The game listing must offer a version for your console. Install on a compatible PS4 or PS5. A PS5 game can only be downloaded to PS5.
Stream Premium members can stream many Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games; streaming availability depends on the title listing. Sony’s US support page states a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for streaming. It states that 1080p streaming requires a game that supports 1080p and a connection of at least 15 Mbps.

The streaming figures are requirements stated on Sony’s US support page, not a guarantee of the experience on every network or in every region. Check your local PlayStation support information for current requirements. Sony’s US page on PlayStation Plus games and streaming describes the streaming benefit.

Choose download when you want to install a title on a compatible console and the listing offers that option. Choose streaming only if you have Premium, the particular game supports streaming, and you want to play without downloading it. Premium does not mean that every catalog title is streamable. Likewise, a streaming option does not establish that the title can be downloaded to the console you are using; check each option separately on the game listing.

Sony’s US support page gives 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for streaming. For 1080p streaming, the game must support 1080p and the connection must be at least 15 Mbps. Those are stated thresholds, not a guarantee of the same performance for every connection, game, or region. If the listing offers streaming but you are unsure whether the service or your connection supports the experience you want, check current local PlayStation support information.

The most useful comparison is not simply “download versus stream” in the abstract. First check whether the game offers your preferred route. Then confirm you have the required membership for that route, and use the relevant console or device. For downloading, the console must support the game’s offered version. For streaming, Premium eligibility, title support, and the stated connection requirements all matter. A title may offer one route and not the other.

If you cannot find or download a game

  • The catalog option is missing: check whether the account has an active Extra or Premium membership. Essential does not include the Game Catalog.
  • The game appears, but download is unavailable: check the listing’s platform and your console. In particular, PS5 games require a PS5 for download.
  • You expected the game to be included: check its current Store or catalog listing for your region and membership. Titles can leave the catalog, and availability is not permanent ownership.
  • You are looking for a game you previously added: check the Game Library. A Game Catalog title remains subject to current service availability.
  • You want to play without installing: check whether the listing offers streaming and whether your membership is Premium. Sony’s stated broadband thresholds on its US page are 5 Mbps minimum for streaming and at least 15 Mbps for 1080p when the game supports 1080p.

For Sony’s official menu paths and service details, refer to its Game Catalog support page and the PlayStation Store listing for the specific title.

Work through the checks in order rather than assuming a missing button has one cause. Start with the benefit: make sure you are browsing the Game Catalog, not Monthly Games. Next check that the membership is Extra or Premium. Then inspect the individual title’s current listing for region, platform, and the available action. If it is a PS5 game and you are trying to download it on PS4, the platform mismatch explains why it is not a PS4 download. If the title used to be in the catalog, check whether it has an end date or has left the service. If the game offers streaming rather than download for your situation, verify Premium eligibility and the listing’s streaming option.

If your goal is simply to relocate a title already downloaded, open the Game Library. If your goal is to find what is available today, use the live catalog or Store listing for your region. These are different tasks: the Game Library helps find PlayStation Plus games already associated with the console, while the live catalog is the appropriate place to check current service availability.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Game Catalog on PS5?

From Games home, open PlayStation Plus, go to the Benefits tab, and select Game Catalog. Choose an eligible game, verify that its listing supports your membership and console, then select Download if it is offered.

How do I download a PS Plus Extra game?

On PS5, open PlayStation Plus from Games home, select Benefits, then Game Catalog. On PS4, open PlayStation Plus from the function screen and scroll to Game Catalog. On either console, choose a currently eligible title and select Download.

Can I download Game Catalog games with Essential?

No. Sony lists Game Catalog access as a benefit of Extra and Premium, not Essential. Check that the account has the correct active membership tier before looking for the catalog.

Can I download a PS5 Game Catalog game on PS4?

No. Sony states that PS5 games can only be downloaded to PS5. Check the title listing for the console version offered rather than assuming one catalog entry means the game is downloadable on both consoles.

Does downloading a catalog game mean I own it?

No. Game Catalog access is a membership benefit, not a purchase or permanent ownership. Sony says some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games have an end date and are removed from the service, so check the current listing if you plan to play later.

What is the difference between Monthly Games and the Game Catalog?

Monthly Games are offered monthly and can be added to your library while your membership is active. The Game Catalog is a rotating library for Extra and Premium. Use the monthly-games listing for a Monthly Game and the Game Catalog menu for a catalog title.

Can I stream instead of download?

Premium members can stream many Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games, but the title listing must offer streaming. Sony’s US support page states a 5 Mbps minimum for streaming; 1080p requires a game that supports it and a connection of at least 15 Mbps. Check local PlayStation requirements as they can differ.

Where can I find a game after downloading it?

Look in the Game Library. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US support page says PlayStation Plus games can also be found there. Remember that a Game Catalog title remains subject to current service availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a game I saw in the catalog no longer available?

Catalog entries can change, and Sony says some Game Catalog or Classics Catalog games have an end date and are removed. Check the current PlayStation Store or local catalog listing rather than relying on an older list or announcement.

Do the PS Plus catalogs have the same games in every country?

The US catalog pages do not establish worldwide catalog parity. Availability can differ by region, so check the current PlayStation Store or catalog for your country and the specific game listing for your membership and console.

The Bottom Line

Open PlayStation Plus and choose Game Catalog—through Benefits on PS5 or from the function screen on PS4. Confirm that your active membership, region, and console match the game’s current listing, then choose Download. Extra and Premium include Game Catalog access; Premium also offers streaming for many titles, but catalog access is not permanent ownership and availability can change.
