Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can explore simulated Roman Space Telescope data now through NASA’s Roman Research Nexus, or download public technical and instrument reference files from NASA’s Roman Technical Information page. Actual Roman science observations are a separate matter: NASA describes access through the Nexus and the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) as the route once science operations and data releases make them available. Check the live archive rather than assuming its planned Roman search and download tools already contain observations.
Choose the right place to look
| Route | Use it for | Current status | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roman Research Nexus | Exploring simulations, learning Roman data formats, and using notebooks and preinstalled software; NASA also intends it as a Roman data access route after science operations begin. | Available for prelaunch exploration with simulated datasets. This is not evidence that live Roman observations are available. | A myST account is required. NASA’s 12 January 2026 announcement says, “All you need is a myST account to login and get started.” |
| Roman Technical Information | Technical and reference downloads for the Observatory, Wide Field Instrument (WFI), and Coronagraph. | NASA describes the repository as public and unrestricted. These are technical materials, not science observations. | No account requirement is stated on NASA’s page. |
| MAST Roman archive | Planned search and retrieval of Roman science datasets and catalog sources. | NASA’s processing plan describes intended query and visualization features; the availability of live Roman observation controls and holdings should be checked in the archive. | Check MAST for current access and availability. |
| Project Infrastructure Teams (PIT) guide and Wide Field Science Teams (WFS) guide | Context on community-produced catalogs, processed images, analysis tools, and other team products. | Guides describe planned and evolving work; they do not establish that each product can already be downloaded. | Check the release date and version of each product. |
Explore Roman before science observations are available
- Open the Roman Research Nexus.
- Sign in with a myST account.
- Start with the simulated datasets, notebook tutorials, preinstalled software, and materials for becoming familiar with Roman data formats.
NASA’s 12 January 2026 announcement describes the Nexus as an environment for prelaunch exploration. It says Roman data will be accessible there after science operations begin; simulations are useful for learning the workflow, but are not observations of Roman’s science mission.

Download technical and instrument reference files
- Open NASA’s Roman Technical Information page.
- Choose the relevant Observatory, WFI, or Coronagraph material and follow its download link.
These public, unrestricted files are for technical reference. They should not be mistaken for the future science archive’s images, spectra, or catalog observations.
Find Roman science observations through MAST when released
NASA identifies MAST as the archive route for Roman science data. Its processing plan describes query forms for datasets and catalog sources, plus interactive visualization for imaging and spectroscopy. The plan also says holdings will be split between cloud and on-premises storage, with the storage location intended to be transparent to users.
#1 Best Overall
Those are planned archive capabilities, not confirmation that every Roman query or download control is live. Open MAST and check the current Roman collection and its actual holdings before trying to retrieve observations. NASA also intends the Nexus to provide data access after science operations begin.
Narrow a science-data search by survey and product
NASA describes three Roman Core Community Surveys: the High-Latitude Wide-Area Survey, High-Latitude Time-Domain Survey, and Galactic Bulge Time-Domain Survey. They cover different observing contexts. When the archive supports the relevant filters, narrow a search by survey, instrument, target or sky position, time coverage, and product level.

- NASA's Roman Space Telescope is designed to settle essential questions in the areas of dark energy, exoplanets, and infrared astrophysics. NGRST has a field of view 100 x Hubble infrared (more sky, more quickly), so expanding our view of the universe.
- Perfect gift or present for all astronomers, science buffs, fans of NASA, space telescopes, the stars, space and the universe in general. For fans of space exploration, and the discerning cosmologist, astronaut, rocket scientist, physicist. Kids too!

Use the PIT guide to understand planned team products
The PIT guide, last updated 18 February 2026, covers five teams: High Latitude Imaging Survey, Supernova Cosmology, Roman Galactic Exoplanet Survey, Galaxy Redshift Survey, and Roman Alerts Promptly from Image Differencing. Its described work includes co-added images, galaxy and transient catalogs, measurements, software, and alerts. Treat release schedules as plans: early and intermediate products may appear in multiple versions or with different algorithms and calibrations.
Use the WFS guide as a map, not an availability list
The WFS guide, last updated 2 March 2026, is an incomplete snapshot of 12 teams’ described work. Topics include joint Rubin/Roman pixel-level analysis, crowded-field photometry, deep-learning catalogs and classification, exoplanets, nearby galaxies, variability, transients, and stellar classification. The guide provides product context, but does not establish that every described item is already downloadable.
Choose between downloading and cloud-based analysis
NASA estimates Roman will produce 20 PB of data over its primary five-year mission. NASA’s 12 January 2026 announcement also compares one month of Roman data with roughly twice the volume Hubble produced over 30 years. These are mission estimates and a comparison, not measurements of a delivered Roman archive.
For prelaunch work, the Nexus offers a cloud-based setting with preinstalled software, notebook tutorials, simulated datasets, team workspaces, and collaboration. Whether to work there or download selected products will depend on what is available and the job at hand; the cited official materials do not specify personal disk requirements or a recommended local storage setup.

Check release status and versions before using a product
- Confirm that the item is an observation or catalog release, rather than a simulation, technical file, or planned team product.
- Check the product’s release date, version, processing notes, and any stated calibration or algorithm variant.
- For archive data, verify that the Roman collection actually exposes the desired holdings and retrieval controls.
- For team-produced files, consult the current PIT or WFS documentation and verify the individual product’s availability rather than inferring it from a guide’s description.
NASA reported that 118 Cycle 1 General Investigator programs were selected from 374 proposals. Program selection is not itself evidence that observations or resulting products are already available to download.
