Then check the automaker’s app and account portal, any optional data-sharing programs, and the owner’s manual for your exact make, model year, and market. There is no universal switch—and removing the phone app may not stop the vehicle from sharing data.
Before changing anything, identify your vehicle’s system
Write down the make, model, model year, market, and infotainment system. Check whether the vehicle is paired with an automaker app or connected-services account, and note any other services you enrolled in. Controls and labels vary by equipment and software version; for example, Ford says available SYNC permissions vary by system, while GM qualifies some controls by model year. Use the owner’s manual and the privacy notice for your vehicle’s market rather than assuming instructions for another model apply.

Where to look in the infotainment system
With the vehicle parked, open its settings and look for headings such as Privacy, Data Sharing, Connected Vehicle, Location Services, Mobile Apps, or App Permissions. These are useful search terms, not guaranteed menu names. If you find separate permissions, read each one: turning off a location control does not necessarily turn off every data flow.

Ford SYNC
Where equipped, Ford SYNC may offer individual permissions such as Vehicle Data, Driving Data, Vehicle Location, Convenience Controls, and Push Notifications. Ford says permissions can be changed individually when the vehicle is not being driven. The exact options depend on the system version and equipment. Ford’s U.S. Privacy Notice, effective July 1, 2026, also describes account-linked services separately from permissions for third-party SYNC apps: Ford U.S. Privacy Notice.

GM and OnStar
Some GM vehicles from model year 2019 onward may provide OnStar location controls under infotainment Privacy Settings. GM says model year 2025 and newer vehicles may also offer consent and a pause control for specified exterior camera and sensor data collection. Availability depends on the vehicle. Disabling OnStar location services may not prevent geolocation collection in certain specified emergency events. Consult the GM U.S. Consumer Privacy Statement and your vehicle’s manual for the applicable controls and exceptions.
Check the automaker app and account portal
Open the automaker app or account website and review its privacy or data-sharing choices and the vehicles linked to your account. These controls can be separate from settings in the car. Check what the choice covers before changing it: it may apply to particular data categories or services rather than all vehicle data.

Toyota Connected Services
Toyota’s U.S. Connected Services Privacy Notice says owners can opt out or request data-transmission deactivation through the Toyota App or the vehicle’s SOS button. The notice says this affects collection of certain location, driving, vehicle-health, and account information. Connected functions such as remote access, navigation assistance, and maintenance alerts may be affected, so check the feature consequences before changing consent. The notice is updated as of July 1, 2026, and covers the continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii, subject to exclusions and qualifications; it may not fully apply to some rental vehicles. Ford account-linked sharing
Ford says removing the vehicle’s VIN from the Ford or Lincoln account or app garage, or performing a master or factory reset, can stop account-associated data sharing. To remove remote access, all accounts associated with the vehicle must remove it. Deleting the phone app alone does not disable vehicle data sharing.

Review optional programs and third-party permissions separately
A single privacy setting may not cover every service connected to the vehicle. Check each relevant enrollment and permission individually:
- Third-party apps: Review permissions for apps connected through the infotainment system, including any vehicle, driving, or location access.
- Automaker account services: Review connected features tied to your account, such as remote access or other app-based services.
- Optional insurance or driving programs: Toyota describes an opt-in usage-based auto insurance program that uses driving data such as acceleration, speed, braking, and steering, as well as location data. Check the program’s own settings and notice if you enrolled.
- Camera and sensor collection: For applicable GM vehicles, review the separate choices for specified exterior camera and sensor data; these are not the same as OnStar location controls.
As Mozilla’s Lauren Hendry Parsons told the Associated Press, “There are permissions in your settings that you can make choices about. Go through on a granular level and look at those settings where you can.”

Choose a control that matches what you want to stop

These choices are not interchangeable. A narrow app or location setting should not be treated as proof that all connected services are disconnected. Toyota describes deactivation as stopping collection of certain information, not every possible vehicle-data flow under every circumstance.
Verify the saved choice and understand the limits
- After changing a setting, reopen the same infotainment menu and confirm the choice remains selected.
- Check the automaker account portal or app for the vehicle’s status and any separate privacy or service settings.
- If the control is missing or unclear, consult the exact owner’s manual or contact the automaker’s support team. Do not modify or disconnect vehicle hardware based on a menu setting you cannot find.
Some controls have stated exceptions. GM says specified emergencies may still result in geolocation collection after OnStar location services are disabled. Toyota’s notice describes an opt-out or deactivation affecting certain categories; it does not establish that all vehicle data is stopped in every circumstance. Check the applicable notice for the scope of your choice.

Before selling, transferring, or buying a used connected car
Remove personal profiles and account links in addition to reviewing privacy settings. Ford recommends a master or factory reset before transferring ownership and after acquiring a pre-owned modem-equipped vehicle; its notice says the reset removes imported personal information and disconnects Ford or Lincoln accounts. Follow the specific manufacturer’s transfer and reset instructions for other makes—Ford’s procedure is not a universal rule. Ford also says drivers should be told about a vehicle’s connectivity and privacy settings.
