Find old accounts by searching every inbox you have used, checking saved logins and connected apps, and looking for usernames or email addresses you remember. Before closing any account, protect the email address used for password resets, save data you want to keep, update sign-ins on services you still use, and follow the provider’s official deletion process. Account closure may take time and does not necessarily erase every copy of your information.

Why finding old accounts takes more than one search

There is no guaranteed universal directory of every account you have ever created. Old services may not have sent a welcome message, you may have deleted the relevant email, or an account may use an address you no longer remember. Treat the search as an inventory exercise: combine several clues, record what you find, and verify important accounts directly with their providers.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Finding forgotten accounts matters for more than tidiness. An unused account may contain personal files, public posts, purchase history, a saved payment method, or a sign-in route to another service. A central email or identity-provider account can also help you regain access to other accounts. Closing the wrong account—or closing it before updating connected services—can create avoidable access problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the process as two related tasks: discovering accounts and deciding what to do with each one. Finding a login does not mean it should automatically be deleted. Some accounts hold records or purchases you may need; others may provide password recovery or single sign-on for services you still use. Mark uncertain accounts for follow-up rather than treating them as obvious candidates for closure.

How to find accounts you may have forgotten

Search current and old email inboxes

Search every inbox you can still access, including addresses you used at school, work, or with an internet provider if they remain available. Search separately for each address; a single search of your current inbox will not find accounts registered with an older one.

Try terms associated with account creation and use, such as “welcome,” “verify,” “confirm your email,” “receipt,” “subscription,” and “password reset.” Search for payment providers, app stores, or services you remember using as well. A receipt can reveal a paid account even if its original welcome email is gone; a password-reset message can point to an account you have not used in years.

It can help to search across date ranges or use a service name you remember alongside a term such as “receipt” or “verify.” Check archived and spam folders if your mail service retains them. These are search tactics, not a way to produce a complete account list: services may not send receipts, old messages may have been deleted, and the account may use another address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Email is a clue, not a complete record. Some services send few or no messages, messages can be deleted, and an account may be registered to a different address. Do not conclude that an account does not exist just because a search finds nothing.

Review saved logins and devices

Check saved passwords in the browsers and password managers you have used. Look for entries you no longer recognize, duplicate logins, and old email addresses or usernames. A saved login can identify a service even when you cannot recall when you created the account.

Review the apps installed on your phone, tablet, and computer, including apps you have removed if your device’s app history makes them visible. The app itself may be gone while the online account remains active. On a service you still use, look in its account or security settings for connected apps, authorized services, or accounts that can sign in through a third party.

When you find an unfamiliar saved login or connection, note it first. Check whether it belongs to a service you still use or to an identity provider that unlocks other accounts. A password manager can help organize saved logins for future maintenance, but neither it nor a browser’s saved-password list should be treated as a complete directory of every account you have ever opened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search for remembered usernames and addresses

Search the web for usernames, display names, and old email addresses you commonly used. This can surface a public profile or service you did not find in email or saved logins. Results are incomplete: private accounts may not appear, and a search result does not prove that you still control the account.

If a result looks familiar, use the provider’s own sign-in or account-recovery page to establish whether it is yours. Avoid assuming that a public page with a similar name belongs to you, and do not enter sensitive information into an unfamiliar site that claims it can locate or delete accounts for you.

Keep a simple inventory

Record enough information to make a safe decision before you start deleting. A spreadsheet or handwritten list is sufficient; avoid putting passwords or recovery codes in an unprotected document.

  • Service: the website, app, or provider name.
  • Login: the email address or username associated with it, if known.
  • Status: still needed, uncertain, or a candidate for closure.
  • Dependencies: services, files, purchases, subscriptions, or recovery options connected to it.
  • Next action: secure, update, export, cancel, recover, or close.

Add a note about where you found the account and whether you can still sign in. That makes it easier to distinguish a confirmed account from a possible match and to avoid repeating the search. Keep the inventory itself private, particularly if it lists email addresses or account names.

Which accounts to handle first

Prioritize accounts by the damage or disruption that losing access could cause, not by how old they are. Start with inboxes used for password recovery and identity-provider accounts used to sign in elsewhere. Then review financial and shopping accounts with payment information, cloud storage, and accounts containing personal or public content.

Keep the primary email account available while cleaning up. The Federal Trade Commission explains that control of an inbox can let someone request password-reset links and use messages to take over other accounts. Its August 2023 consumer guidance calls email “an important part of protecting your personal information online.” Secure the inbox before changing or closing accounts that depend on it.

Do not close the email address that receives recovery messages until you have changed that address on the other accounts you plan to keep and confirmed the changes. If you no longer control an old inbox, prioritize the services that still list it as a recovery method. Use each service’s official process to replace or remove that address where possible.

If you suspect an account has been compromised, review its security and activity information before requesting closure when you can. For a Google Account, Google warns that deleting it removes access to Security Checkup, which may be useful for reviewing account activity. That is one reason to check security concerns before deletion rather than treating closure as a substitute for securing an account.

Prepare an account before closing it

Identify what you could lose

Sign in and check what the account controls or stores. Depending on the service, that might include messages, photos, files, calendars, contacts, game progress, purchases, subscriptions, public content, or access to connected services. Confirm that you are looking at the intended account; similar email addresses or profiles can make it easy to close the wrong one.

Review both the account itself and the services connected to it. A Google Account, for example, can provide access to multiple Google services, while an identity-provider sign-in may be used by separate third-party services. The fact that you can remove one account does not tell you whether another service’s files, purchases, or login method will be affected; check the provider’s explanation for the exact account and product.

Save data and handle billing

Download or export anything you want to keep before submitting a closure request. Check purchases and subscriptions separately. Do not assume that deleting an account cancels every recurring charge unless the provider’s instructions clearly say so; use the relevant billing or subscription process when necessary and retain confirmation of a cancellation.

Google’s guidance describes consequences of deleting a whole Google Account, including loss of email, Drive files, calendars, photos, purchased content, and access to services such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, or Play. Its instructions advise changing the Gmail address used for banking, social media, or apps before deleting the account. The scope is important: deleting one product is not the same as deleting the entire identity account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For any paid service, check whether a subscription is billed directly by the provider or through an app store or another payment service. The account closure instructions may not be the same as the billing cancellation instructions. The safe check is to confirm the subscription’s status through its billing channel and retain the cancellation confirmation before proceeding with account closure.

Update accounts you plan to keep

For every service you intend to retain, replace the old email address or sign-in method before closing the old account. Confirm the new address or method works, and check that recovery details are current. If you use a central identity provider to sign in to third-party services, inspect those connections and arrange another sign-in method where the service allows it. Closing a central login does not necessarily close the third-party accounts that rely on it, but it can make them harder to access.

Google specifically recommends changing the Gmail address used for banking, social media, or apps before deleting the Google Account. More broadly, do not assume that deleting a central sign-in account updates the sign-in on dependent services. Visit the services you will keep, change their login or recovery details, and verify that the new method works while you still have access to the old one.

Choose the right action: delete, close, or remove

Providers use different labels and offer different controls. Read the description of the action, not just the button label. Signing out, removing an account from a device, disabling a profile, deleting one product, and closing an entire online account can have different results.

What you want to do What to check
Delete one service or product Confirm that the action affects only that service and understand what happens to its data and sign-in.
Close the whole account Review the provider’s list of affected services, data, purchases, and recovery options before confirming.
Remove access from a device Check whether this only signs the account out or removes it locally; it does not by itself establish that the online account is deleted.
Close a central identity account Find dependent accounts and update their sign-in or recovery methods first. Do not assume third-party accounts will close with it.

Google’s official help distinguishes deleting a whole Google Account from deleting Gmail alone or removing another Google service. If you delete Gmail only, Google requires another email address to be associated with the account and verification of that address. Choose the scope that matches your goal rather than selecting a broad account closure to remove just one service.

There is also a choice between closing an account immediately, where the provider allows it, and retaining a recovery period. A grace period can give you a chance to reverse a mistaken closure, but it means the account is not necessarily erased at once. Microsoft’s personal-account process offers a 30- or 60-day reopen window. Read the current terms and select the option deliberately; do not assume the same interval applies elsewhere.

Use the provider’s official closure process

  1. Open the provider’s own account settings or help instructions. Search within the service’s official site for its current close-or-delete guidance. Avoid relying on an old third-party walkthrough for a process that may have changed.
  2. Sign in and verify the account. Confirm the identity, username, and email address of the account you intend to close. Some providers require access to the account before they will accept a closure request.
  3. Review the consequences and checklist. Check for data downloads, purchases, subscriptions, linked services, and recovery options you have not yet handled.
  4. Select the explicit closure action. Read the final screen carefully. Make sure it describes deleting or closing the online account rather than merely signing out, removing a device, or disabling a profile.
  5. Record the confirmation and timing. Save the confirmation email or screen and note any period during which signing in can reopen the account. Follow the provider’s current directions rather than assuming closure is immediate.

After requesting closure, follow the provider’s instructions about whether to avoid signing in. A sign-in during a reopen period may restore or reopen the account, depending on that provider’s process. Keep the confirmation and any cancellation records somewhere you can retrieve them, but do not retain sensitive credentials in an unsecured note.

Google Account: decide whether to delete the whole account

Google’s help page directs users to review linked apps and explains the difference between deleting a Google Account and deleting Gmail or another service. Before a whole-account deletion, use its checklist to assess affected data and access. If you only want to remove Gmail, follow the separate Gmail deletion process and associate and verify another email address as Google requires.

Google also cautions that deletion removes access to Google services and some purchased content. Review linked apps and third-party services that use the account to sign in, then update those you intend to keep. Consider any security review you still need to complete: Google says deletion removes access to Security Checkup.

Microsoft personal account: account access and a reopen window

Microsoft’s personal-account closure process requires signing in, confirming the right account, reviewing a checklist, and choosing a 30- or 60-day reopen window. Microsoft says account data and content are deleted after that selected window passes. If all sign-in verification information was reset, Microsoft says you must wait 60 days before closing the account. These timings describe Microsoft’s stated personal-account process; check its current instructions for the account you are closing.

The sign-in requirement matters if you have lost access: Microsoft’s personal-account guidance does not describe closure as a simple unauthenticated request. Try the official recovery route and check the provider’s current directions rather than relying on a third party promising to bypass verification.

Login.gov: what happens if you cannot authenticate

Login.gov says deleting an account removes the email address, password, and phone number from that Login.gov account and prevents sign-in to partner agencies that require it. Information stored with those partner agencies is not lost just because the Login.gov account is deleted. If you do not have access to authentication methods, Login.gov describes a two-step email process with a 24-hour waiting period. Follow its current official instructions rather than treating this timing as a general rule for other providers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before deleting a Login.gov account, consider whether you still use it to sign in to a partner agency. Deleting the Login.gov credentials can block that sign-in route even though information held by the agency is not deleted. Check the agency’s own access options if you expect to keep using its services.

If you cannot sign in

Try the provider’s official account-recovery process before assuming that an account can be closed without authentication. Recovery may require access to a registered email address or phone number, and account closure rules differ by service. Do not give your password or verification codes to someone claiming they can delete the account for you.

Some services provide an alternate deletion procedure when you no longer have an authentication method. Login.gov is one documented example: its instructions describe an email-based process and a 24-hour interval. That exception should not be generalized to other providers. Microsoft’s personal-account closure instructions, by contrast, require sign-in; if verification information has been reset, the stated waiting period before closure is 60 days.

If you cannot access the recovery email or phone, check the provider’s official help pages for the account-recovery options that apply to that specific situation. Do not repeatedly submit deletion requests through unofficial forms, and do not assume that a request to remove a device or app will close the online account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the account belongs to a workplace or school, an administrator may control it. Contact the organization’s administrator or follow its official account process instead of assuming the personal-account instructions apply. Financial, government, health, or paid services may also have specific closure and record-retention rules, so check the service’s current official terms and instructions.

What deletion does—and does not—guarantee

A closure request is not a promise that every copy of your information disappears immediately. In its September 11, 2024 staff report, A Look Behind the Screens: Examining the Data Practices of Social Media and Video Streaming Services, the Federal Trade Commission found that only a few of the companies it examined automatically deleted inactive accounts. The report describes soft-deletion periods and exceptions for reasons including legal, security, tax, or accounting needs. The FTC summarized the examined companies’ practices this way: “Generally speaking, most Companies did not proactively delete inactive or abandoned accounts.”

Those findings apply to the social media and video-streaming companies covered by that report, not every provider or every kind of account. Other users may also have copied or shared content outside the service, beyond your control. Check the provider’s own explanation of what closure removes, what may be retained, and how long its process takes; do not treat a deletion confirmation as proof that all copies have vanished.

Inactive is not necessarily the same as deleted. The FTC report found that only a few examined companies automatically deleted inactive or abandoned accounts; some used soft-deletion periods, and some retained information for stated legal, security, tax, or accounting reasons. Do not rely on inactivity alone to close an account. If you want to remove it, use the provider’s explicit closure process and read its explanation of timing and retention.

A practical final check

  • Have you searched all inboxes you used and checked saved logins, devices, connected apps, and remembered usernames?
  • Have you kept the email account used for recovery secure and available while updating accounts you will keep?
  • Have you checked the account’s data, billing, purchases, linked services, and recovery methods, and saved what you need?
  • Are you using the provider’s official process for the correct account and the intended scope of deletion?
  • Have you saved the confirmation and noted any recovery window or additional wait?

For a final pass, revisit the inventory after completing account changes. Mark which accounts were closed, which are still active, and which remain unresolved because recovery or verification is needed. This prevents an unanswered account from being mistaken for a deleted one and gives you a clear list of the remaining official steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find all the online accounts I have created?

There is no guaranteed universal directory. Search every current and old inbox for welcome, verification, receipt, subscription, and password-reset messages; review saved logins in browsers and password managers; check app history and connected-app settings; and search remembered usernames and email addresses on the web. Treat each method as a clue, since records may be missing or an account may use another address.

Should I delete my old email account first?

Usually, keep the email account used for password resets available while you update accounts you plan to keep. Change the email or sign-in method on those services and confirm the new method works before closing the inbox. The FTC notes that access to an email inbox can be used to request password-reset links for other accounts.

Does deleting a Google Account delete Gmail only?

No. Google distinguishes deleting an entire Google Account from deleting Gmail alone or removing another Google service. Whole-account deletion can remove access to Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Play, and some purchased content. For Gmail-only deletion, Google requires another email address to be associated with the account and verified.

How long does it take to delete a Microsoft account?

Microsoft’s personal-account closure process offers a 30- or 60-day reopen window and says data and content are deleted after the selected window passes. If all sign-in verification information was reset, Microsoft says you must wait 60 days before closing the account. Check Microsoft’s current instructions for the account involved.

Can I delete an account if I cannot sign in?

It depends on the provider. Try the official recovery process first. Microsoft’s personal-account closure requires sign-in, while Login.gov describes a two-step email deletion process with a 24-hour waiting period when authentication methods are unavailable. Do not assume another service offers the same exception.

Does closing an account erase all my personal information?

Not necessarily, and not always immediately. The FTC’s September 2024 report on examined social media and video-streaming companies describes soft-deletion periods and some legal, security, tax, or accounting retention exceptions. Content copied or shared outside a service may also remain. Check the provider’s current explanation of deletion and retention.

The Bottom Line

Find accounts with several clues, then close them one at a time through each provider’s official process. Keep recovery email secure until dependent sign-ins are updated, save data and handle billing first, and treat closure confirmation as the start of a process—not proof that every copy of your information vanished.
