Mozilla says tabs playing audio or video are marked there and have their own pause button, so you can stop the sound without reopening the page.
Samsung Internet provides a notification-drawer and lock-screen mini-controller for web audio, but Samsung’s documentation does not establish an equivalent list that identifies the exact noisy tab. Chrome’s documented media-tab instructions apply to computers, not Android, so do not follow desktop Chrome steps as though they were Android navigation.

Use Android’s notification panel first
The notification shade is the quickest control when you only need to stop audio or video. It can work even after you have switched away from the browser, provided the browser still has an active media session and Android is showing its media controls.
- Leave the audio or video playing and swipe down from the top of the screen. On some phones, swipe down twice to expand the full Quick Settings and notification view.
- Find the media-player notification. It normally shows the browser name, a title or site-provided description, and controls such as play/pause, previous, and next.
- Tap the pause button. You do not need to return to the web page.
- If several media sessions are available, tap the player or its app name to select the browser session you want to control, then pause it.
This route is a playback control, not a guaranteed tab finder. The card may identify Firefox, Samsung Internet, or another browser without naming the individual tab. If you need to know which page is responsible, Firefox’s Open Tabs view is the documented tab-level solution.

When no media card appears
- Check that media is still actively playing. A notification can disappear after the site pauses, the page is closed, or Android has dismissed an inactive session.
- Look for a collapsed notification or an “active apps” area and expand it.
- Verify that the browser is allowed to post notifications. Android’s notification permission affects whether browser media controls are visible.
- Try opening the browser while the sound is audible, then pull down the shade again. Some sites create a media session only after playback starts.
- If the browser has stopped its player as soon as you left it, investigate battery restrictions and Data Saver; those settings can change background behavior.
Headphones, earbuds, and external speakers do not identify a tab by themselves. Their play/pause buttons usually operate the same Android media session shown in the notification panel.
Firefox for Android: identify the exact tab
Firefox has the clearest documented method for locating a background tab. Mozilla Support states that the Open Tabs section on the Firefox for Android home screen shows whether tabs are playing audio or video and includes a pause button that stops playback without opening the page.
Pause a noisy tab from Open Tabs
- Open Firefox for Android.
- Go to Firefox’s home screen and open the Open Tabs section. If a web page is currently displayed, use Firefox’s tab switcher or return to the browser home screen until the open-tab list is visible.
- Scan the tab cards or rows for the indicator that the tab is playing audio or video.
- Press that tab’s Pause button. Playback should stop while the tab remains open, and you do not have to load the page again.
This is useful when several tabs are open and you do not want to activate each one, particularly when one page has an advertisement, livestream, or hidden video that started in the background. The control is attached to the tab shown in Open Tabs, so it answers both questions—“which tab is playing?” and “how do I stop it?”—in one place.

Use Firefox’s notification controls as a second route
While Firefox media is actively playing, pull down Android’s notification panel and use Firefox’s media controls. This is faster if you already know Firefox is the source or if you are holding the phone while another app is in the foreground. It pauses the current Firefox media session but may not tell you which of several Firefox tabs created it; use Open Tabs when identification matters.

Stop automatic starts with Firefox’s Autoplay setting
- Open Firefox and tap the menu button.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Privacy & security.
- Tap Site settings, then Autoplay.
- Choose the blocking behavior you want and review any site-specific exceptions.
Autoplay is a prevention setting. It governs whether a site may start media automatically; changing it is not the same as pausing a tab that is already playing. A site-specific exception can override the general Autoplay choice, so inspect exceptions if one page continues to start sound.
Why Firefox may stop when you switch apps
Background playback is partly controlled by the website. A site can pause its own player when Firefox is minimized, and not every player is designed to continue outside the foreground. If a page stops as soon as you leave Firefox, test another website before assuming the browser is malfunctioning.
Android’s battery controls and Data Saver can also limit background activity. Check the browser’s battery setting in Android system settings and temporarily test with Data Saver disabled if you need to determine whether the operating system is interrupting playback. Menu names vary by Android release and phone maker, so look for the browser’s app battery or background-use controls rather than relying on one universal label.
Private tabs, notifications, and protected media
- Mozilla notes that Firefox pauses media in private tabs when the app is minimized. A private tab may therefore behave differently from a normal tab.
- Notification controls depend on both active playback and Android notification permission. No card may be shown when either condition is missing.
- Digital-rights-managed (DRM) services can require a compatible device, account, subscription, and region. A control that works for an ordinary web video may not behave the same way for protected media.
Samsung Internet: control playback from notifications or the lock screen
Samsung’s web-development documentation says users can keep listening to audio streamed from sites after switching to other tabs or applications. It describes a mini-controller in the notification drawer and on the lock screen.

Pause or resume Samsung Internet audio
- Start the web audio in Samsung Internet.
- Switch to another tab or app.
- Open the notification drawer and locate Samsung Internet’s mini-controller.
- Tap pause to stop the audio, or play to resume it.
- If the phone is locked, use the same mini-controller on the lock screen when it is displayed.
This documented feature is a system-level playback control. The cited Samsung material does not document an all-open-tabs list that names the source tab and provides a separate pause button for each tab. If Samsung Internet’s controller tells you only that Samsung Internet is playing, you may need to return to the browser and inspect tabs individually, stopping or closing candidates until the sound is identified. Do not assume that a control in the notification drawer proves which tab produced the audio.
Do not confuse video tools with a tab finder
Samsung’s browser overview also describes popup video and a floating Video Assistant controller. Those features are intended for viewing or managing video, not for listing every tab that is making noise. The overview contains references to older browser versions, so exact labels and placement can differ on the version installed on your phone. Treat the notification or lock-screen mini-controller as the documented general control and verify any additional button against your current build.
Chrome on Android: what is and is not documented
The Chrome Help procedure often found in searches describes a media-control chip, returning to a tab, and picture-in-picture on a computer. Its steps explicitly say “On your computer.” They should not be presented as Chrome-for-Android instructions.
For Chrome on an Android phone or tablet, the reliable general action supported by the operating system is to pull down the notification panel while media is active and use any Chrome media card that appears. If the card is absent, check active playback and notification permission, then open Chrome and inspect tabs manually. The exact current Android procedure for displaying a named list of media-playing Chrome tabs is not established by the cited Chrome Help material, so menu paths can change with Chrome and Android releases.

Do not claim that Chrome’s desktop media chip is available in the Android tab switcher unless the installed version visibly provides it. A desktop article can be accurate for Windows, macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS and still be the wrong guide for an Android device.

Troubleshoot a sound that keeps returning
The pause button works, but audio starts again
First confirm whether you paused the media session or merely muted the phone. If the site automatically starts another clip, close the offending tab or use Firefox’s Autoplay setting. In Firefox, inspect site-specific exceptions because an exception can permit a page to bypass the general rule. A page may also contain multiple players; stopping one does not necessarily stop another.
The browser pauses as soon as it is minimized
That can be intentional site behavior. Test a different website to separate a site-specific pause from an Android or browser restriction. Then review the browser’s battery/background-use setting and Data Saver. Firefox private tabs are expected to pause media when Firefox is minimized.

The notification panel shows the browser but no useful title
Use the browser’s own tab view when available. Firefox’s Open Tabs indicators are designed for this exact identification problem. Samsung’s mini-controller may remain at the browser level, so return to Samsung Internet and check tabs manually. For Chrome, the cited desktop documentation does not supply an Android tab-list procedure.
There is no notification control at all
- Restart playback briefly and pull down the shade again.
- Check Android notification permission for the browser.
- Confirm that the browser has not been force-stopped or restricted from background use.
- Try an ordinary, non-DRM web audio or video page. Protected services may impose separate device, account, subscription, or regional requirements.
The sound is coming from a private or forgotten tab
In Firefox, open the tab switcher and look for the media indicator in Open Tabs. Remember that private Firefox tabs pause media when the app is minimized, so a disappearance after switching apps may be expected rather than evidence that the tab closed. In browsers without a documented tab-level indicator, inspect open tabs one at a time while keeping the notification panel available for a quick pause.
A practical decision path
- Need silence immediately? Pull down Android’s notification panel and tap pause on the browser media card.
- Need to know which Firefox tab is responsible? Open Firefox’s home screen, enter Open Tabs, find the audio/video indicator, and tap that tab’s Pause button.
- Using Samsung Internet? Use the notification-drawer or lock-screen mini-controller, then return to the browser if you need to identify the exact tab.
- Using Chrome? Use the Android notification panel when available. Do not use Chrome desktop media-chip directions as Android instructions.
- Want to prevent repeats? In Firefox, review Settings > Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay and check site exceptions. For any browser, also investigate battery restrictions, Data Saver, notification permission, private browsing rules, and the site’s own background-playback behavior.
What the controls can and cannot guarantee
Browser audio is governed by several layers: the web page’s player, the browser’s media session, Android’s notification and background policies, and sometimes DRM requirements. A pause button can stop the current session without identifying every possible source. A browser-level notification can control playback without naming a tab. Conversely, a tab-level indicator can identify the page but may still be affected by the site’s decision to stop when backgrounded.
For the most dependable tab identification documented for Android, Firefox’s Open Tabs view is the strongest choice. For a fast stop from any app, Android’s notification panel is the common first move. Samsung Internet’s notification and lock-screen controls are useful for continuing or stopping audio, while Chrome’s frequently cited media-tab instructions must be kept in their desktop context unless current Android help explicitly confirms an equivalent.
