To find legitimate freebies in the UK, first work out what the offer actually is: a gift available to many people, a prize only some entrants can win, a loyalty reward, a discount, a free-entry draw, or a trial that may become paid. Then check the promoter, the full terms, every cost and any follow-on commitment before you enter or sign up. A “you’ve won” message is not proof that you entered or won.
This guide draws on official UK consumer, advertising and prize-draw guidance current to 4 October 2026. It explains how to assess offers; it does not verify any particular freebie or reward as currently available.

What kind of offer are you looking at?
“Freebie” is an informal umbrella term, not a promise that there are no conditions. Identify the mechanism before deciding whether the offer is worthwhile: promotional rules can apply to discounts, incentive schemes and long-term loyalty programmes as well as prize promotions.

| Offer type | What you receive | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gift or sample | An item or benefit offered to all eligible people or a substantial group, while supplies last or subject to stated conditions. | Eligibility, stock limits, postage or delivery charges, purchase conditions and any marketing or data sign-up. |
| Prize draw | A chance to win; only selected entrants receive a prize. | Entry route, closing date, selection method, prize allocation, notification and delivery terms. |
| Skill-based competition | A prize awarded through a competition intended to depend on skill, knowledge or judgement. | Whether the task genuinely meets the applicable standard; a simple multiple-choice question does not automatically make a competition a lawful skill competition. |
| Loyalty reward or incentive | A benefit earned through qualifying activity, such as purchases or participation. | Qualifying spend or activity, exclusions, expiry and redemption conditions. |
| Discount | A reduced price, rather than a free item or chance to win. | The price, eligibility, excluded products, minimum spend and duration. |
| Free trial | Temporary access to a service, which may continue as a paid subscription. | Trial length, renewal date, price after the trial and how to cancel. |
The Advertising Standards Authority and Committee of Advertising Practice (ASA/CAP) say the distinction between a gift, available to all or many, and a prize, awarded to a few, must be clear. An offer should not describe a benefit as a chance-based prize if all or a significant proportion of participants receive it in a way that could confuse consumers.

How to check whether a freebie or reward is legitimate
1. Find the promoter and verify the offer independently
Identify the organisation responsible for the promotion. Reach the offer by navigating from the organisation’s own website or verified channel, rather than trusting a link or telephone number supplied only in an unexpected message. Check that the official page describes the same offer, dates and claim process.
Be especially cautious if a message says you have already won but you do not remember entering. Urgent wording such as “final notice” is not evidence of a genuine win. ASA/CAP guidance says marketers must not falsely imply that someone has won or will win, and must not exaggerate the chances of winning.

- Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Mastercard Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted, including online. Your Amazon.com Balance cannot be used to purchase Mastercard gift cards.
2. Read the complete terms before entering
Look for terms that are available before or at entry and can be retained. Significant conditions should be prominent enough to inform your decision. Check:
- Who is eligible, including any age, location or customer restrictions.
- The opening and closing dates, entry limit and any purchase or communication requirement.
- How winners are selected and notified, and when they must respond.
- What the prize or reward consists of, when it will be delivered and whether a cash alternative is offered.
- Any data, marketing sign-up or other commitment stated in the terms.
For a draw, look for an explanation of how the winner is chosen. ASA guidance expects selection through a verifiably random computer process or an independent observer, and says the prize should be awarded as described or as a reasonable equivalent. Keep a copy or screenshot of the advert, terms and confirmation; changing terms after a promotion starts should be avoided.

3. Work out the real cost and what happens next
Check for a claim fee, premium-rate call, delivery charge, required purchase or other payment. CMA guidance identifies as a banned practice falsely creating the impression that someone has won when claiming requires payment or incurs a cost. It also identifies misleadingly describing something as free when the consumer must pay beyond the unavoidable cost of responding or collecting or paying for delivery. That exception does not make a stated delivery charge disappear: understand the amount and conditions before proceeding.
For a trial, find its end date and whether it automatically starts a paid subscription. ASA guidance says advertising must make clear when signing up to a free trial automatically enrols the consumer in a subscription. Check the cancellation method and timing in the terms rather than assuming the trial ends by itself.

4. Compare free and paid entry routes
Some draws offer both a paid route and a free route. Find the free-entry instructions before buying anything, then compare how accessible and convenient each route is. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) voluntary code says the free route should be clearly promoted, no more expensive or less convenient than the paid route, and treated equally in the allocation of prizes. It also recommends making information about the likelihood of winning and prize allocation accessible where possible.
The Gambling Commission explains that free draws and prize competitions can fall outside the statutory definition of a lottery when they meet the relevant conditions; failing to meet those conditions can result in an illegal lottery. A question attached to an entry is not by itself proof that a competition meets the skill-competition test. The DCMS code is voluntary good practice, not a substitute for consumer, advertising or data-protection obligations.

Warning signs to take seriously
- An unsolicited win claim: you are told you won despite having no known entry, or are pressured to respond urgently. Verify through the promoter’s official site, not contact details in the message.
- A fee to claim a supposed prize: a charge, premium-rate call or payment is demanded before you can receive what you are told you won. CMA guidance identifies false winning claims tied to a cost as a banned practice; ASA guidance says consumers must not incur a cost to claim a prize.
- A hidden free-entry route: the free method is hard to find, more burdensome, more expensive or treated differently from paid entry. These conflict with the DCMS code’s good-practice standards for covered draws.
- Missing or inaccessible terms: the rules cannot be found before entry, are broken, or appear to change after the promotion begins.
- Confusing gift and prize language: the promotion suggests everyone will receive something when only a few can win, or presents a broadly available benefit as a chance-based prize.
- A trial with an undisclosed subscription: the offer does not make clear that signup leads into paid membership.
- Headline prize claims without useful context: the advert emphasises a large number of prizes but gives no clear account of selection or allocation. ASA guidance says winning chances must not be exaggerated and recommends relevant odds information.
Where UK guidance applies—and where to get help
The sources do not all have identical reach. The DCMS voluntary prize-draw code describes its coverage in Great Britain and focuses on draws with both paid and free entry routes. The Gambling Commission notes that lottery law includes separate provisions for Northern Ireland. Do not assume that the code is legislation or that the same jurisdictional rules apply throughout the UK.
ASA/CAP materials are advertising guidance, not legal advice. For a promotion that has not delivered what was promised, keep the advert, terms, entry confirmation and correspondence, then use the consumer advice or complaint route appropriate to the issue and where you live. GOV.UK’s consumer-rights information identifies Consumerline for Northern Ireland and also points to MoneyHelper for free, independent money guidance. Not every dispute is handled by the same regulator.
