Start at Settings > Battery. Check Battery usage before changing anything, keep Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled, then adjust display, connectivity, background-use and charging controls to match your routine. Charging options are under Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization on supported Pixels. Labels and availability vary by Pixel model and Android version.
Open the battery controls first
On your Pixel, open Settings and tap Battery. This page shows your current charge, a battery-level chart and an estimate of remaining time when the phone can make one. It is the starting point for both diagnosis and long-term battery care.

Do not begin by disabling random features. A setting that saves a little power may also remove a feature you rely on, while the biggest drain may be a single app, a bright display or a poor-signal connection. Use the information on the Battery page to decide which change is justified.

Find the app or system function using the most power
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. The screen can present consumption by application or by system function. The percentages are rounded, so they may not add up to exactly 100 percent.
Inspect apps
- Tap View by apps.
- Review the list for an app whose use is out of proportion to how often you used it.
- Tap the app to open its detail page.
- Review Allow background usage, where that control is available, and choose the least permissive option that still supports how you use the app.
Restricting background activity can delay notifications, location updates, uploads or other work. If an app must receive time-sensitive messages, keep the setting that permits that behavior and investigate the app itself instead of applying a blanket restriction.
Inspect system functions
Tap View by systems to look beyond individual apps. This view helps identify drain associated with the display, mobile network, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, hotspot or other phone functions. A high system category is a clue to check the corresponding feature, not proof that the component is defective.
Battery usage is a record of the selected period, not a laboratory measurement of how much runtime one switch will add. Google does not publish a guaranteed number of minutes or percentage points for each individual setting.
Leave Adaptive Battery and app optimization on
Google’s guidance is direct: “For best results keep Adaptive Battery and Battery Optimization on.” Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and helps the phone prioritize power for them. Battery optimization limits unnecessary work from apps when they are not in active use.
These controls may not show an immediate improvement. Google says optimization can take a few weeks to reach its full effect after you set up a phone or perform a factory reset. Give the phone time to learn your usage before judging the result.

When you inspect an individual app from Battery usage, avoid changing optimization simply because the app appears in the list. First consider how much of its use is expected. A navigation app used for an hour, for example, can legitimately consume more power than an app opened briefly. Change background use when the evidence shows the app is doing unwanted work while idle.

The display is often a practical place to save energy because it is active whenever you look at the phone. Make changes one at a time so you can tell which trade-off suits you.
Brightness and automatic brightness
- Swipe down to open Quick Settings and lower the brightness slider, or go to Settings > Display & touch > Brightness level if that label is present.
- Consider Adaptive brightness when you want the phone to adjust brightness to surrounding light rather than staying brighter than necessary.
- Lower brightness most aggressively indoors and at night; outdoor visibility may require a higher level.
Screen timeout
Set a shorter timeout under Settings > Display & touch > Screen timeout (the wording can differ by release). A shorter interval prevents the screen from remaining on after you put the phone down. Choose a value that does not interrupt reading or other tasks.
Dark theme
Try Settings > Display & touch > Dark theme. Google includes Dark theme among the settings to consider for battery life. Its practical effect depends on the display, brightness and the apps you use, so treat it as an option rather than a guaranteed runtime increase.
Always-on Display and Smooth Display
On models that offer them, review Always-on Display and Smooth Display in the display settings. Turning Always-on Display off removes the persistent clock and notification view. Turning Smooth Display off can reduce the high-refresh-rate behavior. Both changes trade visual convenience or smoothness for a lower-power configuration; neither is required for every user.

Connectivity can consume power when the phone is maintaining a radio link, searching for service or sharing its connection. Check these items when Battery usage points to network-related drain or when you know you will not need them.

Hotspot and tethering
Turn off Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering when no other device is connected. A hotspot keeps the phone’s wireless hardware active and can also increase heat. Do not leave it enabled simply because you might use it later.
Adaptive connectivity
On supported phones, review Settings > Network & internet > Adaptive connectivity. Google lists this feature for Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Pixel Fold, but notes that carrier limitations may apply in the United States. If the switch is absent, your model, software or carrier configuration may not support it.
Wi‑Fi and location-related behavior
Google identifies Wi‑Fi auto-activation and prolonged GPS use as settings or activities worth reviewing. Turn off Wi‑Fi scanning or automatic activation only if you understand the convenience you are giving up, because those features can help the phone reconnect at familiar locations. Likewise, location access is often essential to navigation, weather and safety apps; restrict it selectively rather than disabling location for everything.
Accounts and Now Playing
Remove accounts you no longer use under Settings > Passwords & accounts (the account path varies by Android release). An unused account can continue synchronizing. Google also lists Now Playing as a feature to review. On Pixel 4, Motion Sense is another model-specific feature that can be checked. These features are not present on every Pixel, so do not search for a switch that your phone does not offer.
Choose a charging mode for your routine
Charging controls affect how long the battery remains at a high state of charge, not just whether the phone reaches 100 percent. On supported software, open Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization, turn on Use charging optimization, and select a mode.

Use Adaptive Charging when timing is predictable
Choose Adaptive Charging if you want 100% available but do not want the phone sitting at full charge for many hours. Keep your usual charging pattern long enough for the approximately 14-day learning period. A changed wake-up time, a trip or an occasional daytime charge can make the feature less likely to activate.

Use the 80% limit when battery longevity is the priority
Choose Limit to 80% if your normal day leaves enough reserve. The lower ceiling reduces the time spent fully charged, but it also gives you less runtime between charges. Disable the limit temporarily when you have a long travel day, extended navigation or another situation where the additional capacity matters.
Google says the phone completes a full charge every tenth cycle even while the 80% limit is enabled so it can keep its capacity readings accurate. When that cycle reaches 100% on the display, leave the phone connected for at least 30 minutes.
Understand automatic charging protection
Pixel 3 and later phones can invoke automatic battery protection during certain prolonged-charging or high-temperature conditions. In that situation, charging may be limited to roughly 70–80% until the condition ends. This is protective behavior, not a fault that requires replacing the battery. Once the phone is cooler or the prolonged condition has passed, normal charging can resume.
Stretch a low charge in an emergency
When you need the phone to last until you can plug it in, open Settings > Battery and turn on Battery Saver. If your model offers it, Extreme Battery Saver applies stronger restrictions. The exact behavior varies by device and software; some features and background activity are limited.
Use these modes as temporary measures rather than your everyday configuration. Google identifies long navigation sessions, video playback, graphics-heavy games, hotspot use, prolonged GPS, streaming and camera use as demanding activities. Ending one of those activities may save more power than changing several minor switches.
Protect the battery from heat
Heat affects both immediate runtime and long-term battery condition. Google says a hot battery can drain faster even while the phone is idle, and excessive heat can damage it.

- Charge in a cool environment; Google gives approximately 25°C / 78°F as a recommended ambient charging temperature.
- Keep the phone out of direct sun and away from external heat sources while charging or using demanding apps.
- Avoid exposing the phone for six or more hours to ambient temperatures at or above 35°C / 95°F.
- If the phone becomes unusually hot, stop demanding activity, move it to a cooler place and let it return toward normal temperature before continuing to charge or use it heavily.
A compatible USB‑C charger is useful if you need a replacement or spare, but buying a charger does not extend battery life or solve drain caused by an app. Google lists its 45W USB‑C Power Charger as a compatible option and advises checking the charging specifications for your particular Pixel model.
Know what battery aging numbers mean
Google describes batteries as consumable components: “All batteries are consumable components and aren’t meant to last indefinitely.” Its design guidance gives the following expectations when the phone is charged as recommended:

A cycle is not necessarily one plug-in session; it represents use equivalent to the battery’s full capacity over time. Do not interpret the thresholds as a guarantee that every battery will show exactly 80% at the stated point.
Troubleshoot sudden or unusually short battery life
After an Android update
Google says somewhat higher drain can be normal for a few days after a software update while the phone downloads and optimizes software. Keep the phone connected when convenient and give the process several days to settle. If the unusual drain continues, use Google’s support troubleshooting for your Pixel model rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
After installing an app
A downloaded app can cause unusually short battery life. Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps and compare the app’s foreground and background behavior with your actual use. Update the app, adjust its background permission or remove it if the evidence points to that app and you do not need it.
When the phone reports fast drain
Battery diagnostics for a “Battery draining too quickly” problem are available on Pixel 6 and later. Some troubleshooting steps require Android 14 or later. Follow the diagnostics and the version-appropriate instructions shown for your phone.
Do not force-stop Google Play services
Google says Google Play services cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled. If it appears in a battery list, treat that entry as information about system activity and investigate the surrounding conditions instead of attempting to remove the service.

Use a setting plan that matches the day
For normal daily use
- Check Battery usage when drain seems different from usual.
- Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled.
- Use Adaptive brightness and a timeout that fits your reading habits.
- Turn off hotspot or tethering as soon as sharing ends.
- Choose Adaptive Charging if your schedule is regular and you want a full charge.
For a day when you need maximum runtime
- Lower brightness and shorten the screen timeout.
- Turn off Always-on Display or Smooth Display if your model provides those controls.
- Stop navigation, streaming, camera use or graphics-heavy games when they are no longer needed.
- Disable hotspot and other radios you are not using.
- Turn on Battery Saver, or Extreme Battery Saver where available, when the remaining charge becomes critical.
For long-term battery care
- Use Limit to 80% on a Pixel 6a or later if an 80% charge normally covers your day.
- Keep the phone cool while charging and avoid prolonged high ambient temperatures.
- Do not leave unnecessary background activity running simply to avoid checking an app’s settings.
- Allow the phone to complete its periodic full charge when the 80% mode requests it, and leave it connected for at least 30 minutes after 100% appears during that cycle.
Why a setting may be missing
Pixel features differ by model, Android version, carrier and region. The 80% charging limit begins with Pixel 6a and later; Adaptive connectivity is listed for Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Pixel Fold, with possible US carrier limitations. Always-on Display, Smooth Display, Motion Sense and Extreme Battery Saver are also model- or software-dependent.
If you cannot find a named control, confirm your Android version, search within Settings and check the Battery page for the options your phone supports. Do not infer that a missing switch indicates a battery problem.
