On current Samsung guidance, start at Settings → Security and privacy. From there, use Permission manager to review app access, Privacy dashboard to check recent permission activity, and More privacy settings for Samsung-specific options. Menu names and availability can differ by Galaxy model, One UI version, region, and software update.
Open Samsung’s privacy settings
On a Galaxy phone, open Settings → Security and privacy. Samsung lists Permission manager there for managing access to categories such as Calendar, Camera, Location, and Microphone. For Samsung-specific controls, open Settings → Security and privacy → More privacy settings; options listed by Samsung include its privacy website and sending diagnostic data. Samsung also documents Google-related privacy controls. Samsung’s privacy settings instructions note that not every feature is available on every device.

If a path or label does not appear, use the search field in Settings and try terms such as “privacy,” “permission manager,” “camera access,” or “microphone access.” Search results and menu labels can vary by device and software version.

The Android Privacy dashboard shows which apps accessed data covered by permissions, which permissions they used, and when the access occurred. Open Settings and tap Security and privacy or Privacy, then Privacy dashboard. On some phones, you may need to tap Privacy again. Choose a permission category to see apps, then tap an app to update its permission. Google’s instructions for managing permissions from the Privacy dashboard say the history covers the last seven days on Android 13 and the last 24 hours on Android 12.

The dashboard is a view of permission activity, not a complete record of every way an app or service may collect or process information.
Change an app’s permissions
You can adjust access from the app’s details or by starting with a permission category. Choose the route that fits what you are trying to manage.

Change permissions for one app
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Tap the app you want to review.
- Tap Permissions.
- Choose a permission and select an available access option.
Change access by permission category
- Open Settings → Security and privacy → Permission manager.
- Choose a category, such as Camera, Location, or Microphone.
- Tap an app and change its access using the options shown.
Depending on the permission and Android version, options may include Allow all the time (for location), Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow. Samsung describes comparable choices such as Allow and Don’t Allow; available choices depend on the service and app. Restricting access can affect features that rely on it, such as navigation, photo capture, or voice input. Google’s app permissions guide explains permission choices and how to manage them.

For apps you rarely use, check the unused-app setting on the app’s details page. Where available, turn on Pause app activity if unused to limit activity and permissions while the app is not being used.

Control camera and microphone access
There are two different controls to consider: permission for a particular app, and device-wide camera or microphone access. Change an app’s access in Permission manager or on its Settings → Apps → [app] → Permissions page. To turn access off for the device, Android documents Settings → Security and privacy → Privacy controls, where you can switch off Camera access or Microphone access. You can also use the corresponding Quick Settings tiles; if a tile is missing, edit Quick Settings to add it. A device-wide switch can block even apps whose individual permissions are allowed. Google’s camera and microphone access instructions describe these controls.
On Android 12 and later, a green indicator appears in the top-right area when an app uses the camera or microphone. Tap it to see which app or service is using the sensor; tapping again can take you to permission management. The indicator and navigation details may vary across devices. Google’s Android guidance covers the indicator and access controls.

Understand the three location controls
Location settings operate at more than one level. A device-wide switch, an app’s permission, and Location Accuracy each do a different job.

It does not necessarily govern every location-related record or estimate; account services or IP-based estimates may be separate.
- Per-app location permission: In Permission manager or the app’s Permissions page, choose whether a particular app can access location. On Android 12 and later, an app may offer approximate instead of precise location. Google’s location-permission guidance explains location access options.
- Location Accuracy: Android can use sources such as wireless signals and device sensors to improve location estimates. Turning Location Accuracy off may reduce accuracy and affect some services. Google’s Location Accuracy help page explains how the setting works.
Choose approximate location when an app does not need an exact position; choose precise access only when its function calls for it. The precise controls and wording available depend on the app and Android version.

Choose settings by scope and impact
